That's about 100% correct... I ignored unattended twice before finally
trying it out, and even after I tried it I had the feeling it was a dead
project. Wasn't until I joined the mailing list that I found out it's more
active.

[Unattended] Isolinux.cfg boot suggestion

2003-07-05 Thread Scott Card
I am setting up Unattended at my site (100 workstations in 3 states)
and am noticing that it might be better to define in isolinux.cfg:

Label local
localboot 128
# instead of: localboot 0

To keep the install going (boot to local HDD) if the boot media is left
in the drive (floppy or CD) instead of choking. Yes, it is better to
just remove the boot media after the process is kicked off, but we're
busy people right :).

Cheers,
Scott

[Unattended] Network too fast for DOS?

2003-07-05 Thread Scott Card
Here is a surprising issue...
I recently upgraded the NIC in our server that is hosting the
unattended OS files to a Gig ether nic (Intel PRO/1000 XT). Since then,
all unattended OS installs have failed during the text mode copying of
files. It doesn't matter which os, what the target hardware is, or
which network driver is used (pcnet and el90x primarily tested here).
The Symptom is: During the copying of files for the os install, the
copying stops in random places and the (OS) install eventually times out
with an error something like "can not copy file XXX...". When I drop
back to a command prompt to check the state of the network connection,
it has basically terminated. When I try to access the Z: mapping, dos
throws "extended error 58".
I am in the process of trying BUFFERS= and FILES= settings in
config.sys to no avail. Also, I looked into possibly doing SPEED=10 in
protocol.ini but such thing doesn't seem to be supported in the PCNet
driver. It looks like I am very close to being forced to do all my OS
installs from CD :( or building up an old slower linux box to test and
host the files.
Does anybody have any ideas? Doesn't it sound like the dos nic driver
is getting data too fast?

Cheers,
Scott

RE: [Unattended] Network too fast for DOS?

2003-07-05 Thread Scott Card
I like your thinking. I love the Linux boot idea. I've
been messing with this dos issue most of the day and am going to have to
do a hack to copy stuff from CD tomorrow so I can get back on track.
I'll send you my changes if they are any good. The plan is: Create a
non-bootable cd with the files from "z:\winxpsp1", add an entry in
"z:\site\unattend.txt" like:

doit_cmd="d:\winxpsp1\i386\winnt /s:d:\winxpsp1\i386
/u:c:\netinst\unattend.txt"

...to run the setup from the CD. The only real work is integrating CD
drivers with the boot disks. Any interest in integrating CD drivers
once I get it worked out? I imagine that I have an example of doing
this from a previous life. Does anyone have info about adding CD
drivers to the boot disk quickly at hand?

The project that you referenced looks interesting. I'm not sure if I'm
on board with using wget to move everything across the network. Maybe
there is a super striped down samba client (smbmount) implementation
that would allow connecting to a windows resource for file transfer.

Thanks for verifying that I'm not crazy,
Scott

I would guess the gigabit box is overwhelming the PC and triggering a
bug in the MSCLIENT TCP/IP stack.

At least one other person got Unattended working from CD-ROM, but I am
not sure if he is on the mailing list. If you find yourself making
changes which are still compatible with the network-based install, I
would be glad to add them to the stock distribution.

Now to change the subject :-).

There is a more radical option which I have been seriously considering
for a while. We could ditch the DOS boot disk and use Linux instead.

Pros:

Linux has a real network stack, so problems like yours could be
  avoided.

Linux can partition the hard drive without needing to reboot.

Under Linux, we *might* be able to create and populate a native NTFS
partition, avoiding the FAT -> NTFS conversion step. I am told this
step leaves the disk badly fragmented, especially the OS files.

  Linux is just cool.

Cons:

Since Linux is a protected mode OS, we have no universal drivers for
the NIC or the disk controller. So we would need a good way to add
  network, SCSI, and RAID drivers.

Using Linux is arguably more complex, and scarier for Windows types.

For an idea of what I am thinking, see what these folks have done:

  https://penguin.ucs.ed.ac.uk/dstwiki/index.php/BootOptions

I think they are using imaging, though. I am envisioning running
winnt.exe under dosemu, or maybe just copying the files directly to the
hard drive and booting from there...

Thoughts?

Does it print out the IP address and MAC address? If so, the problem is
probably with the fdisk command itself (as opposed to writing the temp
file).

What happens if you run "fdisk /info /tech" by hand after the error?

I think I have seen something similar, where fdisk considers the CD-ROM
to be drive 1 (which is its default). So try "fdisk /info /tech 2" and
see what that does.

I do not have any good solution for this, other than to use a floppy or
PXE boot instead. Hm. I suppose install.pl could "hunt" for the right
drive by running fdisk repeatedly ("fdisk /info 1", "fdisk /info 2", and
so on) until it did not get an error. But this is arguably a bug in
FreeDOS fdisk; it should probably skip CD-ROM drives automatically.

I have been using a specific username (and password) for installs from the beginning.
Description below:
  - patched dosbin\install.pl to use a username and password and copy the attached
"mapdrive.pl" to c:\netinst to do the same upon each reboot.
-- CLIP install.pl--
if (defined $top) {
push @postinst_lines, ("net use z: $ENV{'INSTALL'} installpwd /USER:install
/persistent:no",
   'call z:\\scripts\\perl.bat',
   'PATH=z:\\bin;%PATH%',
   'copy z:\\site\\mapdrive.pl c:\\netinst',
   # Last step is always a reboot
-- END CLIP --

  - patched todo.pl to run my "mapdrive.pl" instead of just kicking off the next items
in the todo list upon reboot. This allows the use of a username and password and more
importantly to do some checking for a successful drive mapping before proceeding.
Without this recovery logic, I was having timing issues with the drive not being fully
mapped before attempting to continue on with application installs.
-- CLIP todo.pl--
# We have more work to do, so arrange to run
# ourselves after reboot.
# Doucet hack for drive mapping authentication on reboot
# referenced file created in install.pl
#run_at_logon ("$0 --go");
  run_at_logon ("c:\\netinst\\mapdrive.pl");
-- END CLIP --

I do not know. It does not seem to have any negative effect, but I agree it would be
nice to avoid.

There is no way to do this at present. Right now, the system uses "net use ...
/persistent:yes" to make sure the z: drive gets mapped after each reboot.

What username do you want to use? You might be able to do what you want with
autolog.pl plus some extra registry hacking...

> Can I add "jobs" to the todo list after the "first" installation of XP
> and the applications is done? Where and how

Yes. Run "Z:\bin\todo.pl ...", or just edit c:\netinst\todo.txt by hand. Then run
"z:\bin\todo.pl --go" to fire it off.

> Can I use the reboot function and the installation script will

Try to follow the sample scripts, which use todo.pl to add tasks to the to-do list.
One possible task is ".reboot", which does a reboot and then runs "todo.pl --go" again
after rebooting. This is the only mechanism we have for rebooting in the middle of a
sequence of operations.

> And finally is perl only needed in the OS to run the todo list? Do you

Most of the utility scripts in z:\bin use Perl. I always leave Perl installed because
I prefer it to VB for system administration tasks.

[Unattended] RE: Network too fast for DOS?

I believe that I have solved this issue at the Gig ether card. There
is a setting on the Intel PRO/1000 XT (win2k server) called "Offload
Transmit TCP Checksum" that, when set to "Off", seems to resolve the
issue with communicating with the dos nic driver. I've only been
through three successful tests so far but I think this was the deal. I
have also yet to evaluate the overall impact of this setting on the
performance of the Gig nic.
If I have time, I might go ahead and implement the whole copy from CD
idea anyway as a good backup.

While it is fresh on my mind...

Does anybody know the precise syntax of .ini files? I mean files which
look like this:

  [Section1]
  key1 = value1 ; comment1
  key2 = value2

  [Section2]
  key3 ; no value
  key4 = "some value"
  ...

(Case in point: unattend.txt)

A formal grammar would be ideal. I know, keep dreaming.

Meanwhile, I would like to find out:

  - Which characters are legal in section names, keys, and values?

  - When and where are quotation marks required?

  - Can you embed a quotation mark inside a key or value? How?

  - Can you embed a close-bracket inside a section name? What about a
semicolon?

  - Can individual key=value settings span multiple lines? How?

I believe Windows has an API for manipulating .ini files. It should be
straightforward to experiment by manually editing a file and then
calling the API on it. I may do this when I find the time, but it would
be great if someone already knows the answers or could do the
experiments for me :-).

I've only been using 2.3b, haven't tried 2.4 yet, but I got this error
message on an old dell Optiplex. Turns out that it didn't like how
install.pl set the "use LBA" option. If I ran the partition commands
manually, it worked, but when install.pl ran it, it returned that same
error. I also added an fdisk.ini from the fdisk website,
http://www.23cc.com/free-fdisk/, and if I commented out the part where
it actually set the option in install.pl, it worked.

Scott,

I was really taking thing a step further on than the approach that you
outlined in you earlier post, because a couple of the applications that
we use need a live domain account all of my machines are built with an
extra local admin account that is a domain user account (reading that
myself it may be a bit unclear - what I mean is that I have a domain
account, with minimal rights, that is made a member of each machines
local administrator group at build time)

This account - that I have called setmeup for want of a better name -
has the Z: drive set as its home drive. After the initial build I
switch the to this account to auto logon until I have finished adding
applications (I have butchered the script that sets the auto logon
account and removes it so that I can avoid passing parameters.

The other advantage of this is that I am able to script the installation
of program installation -after- the initial builds, I have a small VB
exe file that sets up the todo list from a central database, it is run
as a logoff script for the machine from group policy. It is also set to
check if an install is already in progress, & wait until any previous
installs have completed before running.

So - in summary - my build process goes like this

1) Standard unattended install (still version 1 in fact) installs
windows, IE6, Hot fixes
2) Move machine into the correct OU (scripted, happens automatically
based on machine name)
3) Next Reboot (usually the final one of the build picks this up) the
shutdown script sets up the applications specific to the OU - Sets
autologon to me special 'setmeup' account - builds the todo list and
sets todo.pl to run on start-up
4) Machine restarts with 'setmeup' account, installs applications that
are out standing in the usual manner then clears the auto logon &
reboots - job done

I appreciate that my writing style is less than perfect (now - be nice)
so if anything needs a bit more clarification then ask & I will try

Regards

Kevin

Let me tell you a story.

Today I found myself tasked with installing Windows XP on a shiny new
piece of hardware: A Dell Precision 450 with an Ultra320 SCSI card and a
fast SCSI drive.

The only problem is that this SCSI card is new, so XP lacks built-in
support for it. And Windows has trouble installing itself on a hard
drive which it cannot see.

Microsoft has a mechanism for dealing with this, of course. It is
called "TXTSETUP.OEM". You can learn more than you want to know at
,
but the theory is simple. Your SCSI hardware vendor (in my case,
Dell) gives you a "driver disk" with a txtsetup.oem file at the top.
Shortly after you start an installation, Windows Setup says "Press F6 if
you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver". Then you press
F6, insert your driver disk, and everything works fine.

...If you are installing from CD-ROM, that is. If instead you are
installing from DOS as part of (say) a network install, things are a tad
trickier.

Installing Windows from DOS goes roughly as follows. You run the DOS
program winnt.exe. It creates something on your C: drive very much like
a Windows installation CD and then reboots. Then everything proceeds
much as if you had booted from the Windows CD, right down to the "Press
F6 if you need to install..." prompt.

As a quick and dirty hack, I launched a network installation, waited for
winnt.exe to populate the C: drive, waited for the "Press F6..." prompt
after the reboot, pressed F6, and fed in the Dell driver disk. Oops, no
good. Setup complained about being unable to find various .sys, .inf
and .cat files.

Well, no matter. Who wants to sit around every time you install
Windows, anyway? And "Unattended" is practically my middle name. Surely
I can automate it.

Heck, Microsoft makes it plain as day in a KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=288344

Note step 5 in particular, which suggests that different installation
methods require slightly different txtsetup.oem files.

Let me share with you the relevant lines from the original txtsetup.oem
on the driver disk. (For clarity, I am omitting the non-relevant lines
of the file, which is to say most of them.)

[Disks]
d3 = "LSI Logic Ultra320 1020/1030 Driver", \symmpi.tag, \WinXP

[scsi]
SYMMPI_XP32 = "LSI Logic Ultra320 1020/1030 Driver (XP
32-bit)",symmpi

[Files.scsi.SYMMPI_XP32]
driver = d3,symmpi.sys,SYMMPI
inf= d3,symmpi.inf
catalog = d3,mpixp32.cat

Here is what this means.

First, the [Disks] section declares a disk named "d3", with a
human-readable description of "LSI Logic Ultra320 1020/1030 Driver", a
tag file of "\symmpi.tag", and a directory of "\WinXP". That is, this
disk can be recognized by the existence of the file \symmpi.tag, and the
driver files it includes all reside within the \WinXP directory.

Second, the [scsi] section declares a driver ID of "SYMMPI_XP32", which
is the identifier the rest of the file uses to name the driver. It has a
description of "LSI Logic Ultra320 1020/1030 Driver (XP 32-bit)". It
also has magic registry key of "symmpi", but that is not relevant here.

Finally, the [Files.scsi.SYMMPI_XP32] section defines the files which
comprise the SYMMPI_XP32 driver. This section says that the driver
proper is on disk d3 in the file symmpi.sys, the inf file is on d3 in
symmpi.inf, and the catalog file is on d3 in mpixp32.cat. (The extra
SYMMPI at the end of the "driver" line is another registry-related key.
It is also not relevant here.)

Right. So, following the KB article's instructions, I edited the d3
line of txtsetup.oem like so:

d3 = "LSI Logic Ultra320 1020/1030 Driver", \symmpi.tag, .

That is, I replaced \WinXP with a dot.

Then I copied all of the driver files, plus txtsetup.oem itself, to
Z:\winxpoem\I386\$oem$\TEXTMODE. I edited z:\site\unattend.txt to add
these lines:

[MassStorageDrivers]
"LSI Logic Ultra320 1020/1030 Driver (XP 32-bit)" = "OEM"

[OEMBootFiles]
TXTSETUP.OEM
SYMMPI.TAG
MPIXP32.CAT
SYMMPI.INF
SYMMPI.SYS

The [MassStorageDrivers] section says that I want to add a mass storage
driver during text mode setup. It says to look for the key "LSI Logic
Ultra320 1020/1030 Driver (XP 32-bit)" in the [scsi] section of
txtsetup.oem and to load that driver.

The [OEMBootFiles] section tells winnt.exe to copy TXTSETUP.OEM,
SYMMPI.TAG, MPIXP32.CAT, SYMMPI.INF, and SYMMPI.SYS from $OEM$\TEXTMODE
to the C: drive before rebooting.

This is what the KB article said to do, so I did it. And it worked
great.

Just kidding! Actually,

I am with you on the 2.7 upgrade. I am thinking that I will probably wait until
some progress is made in getting away from the dos boot images in favor of Linux boot
images. Or, if somebody gets around to integrating drive mapping authentication...
Then I'll be back into development for the project with both feet. Anyway, to answer
your question, to get around temporary failures, I just try a number of times before
giving up. See the attached file. I also log the fact that the drive mapping
succeeded or failed.

Hi Scott!

I just want to ask you something short.

I haven't updated to version to 2.7 yet, because that will generate a lot of extra
work for me and why change something that is working fine for me;)

The only minor problem I have from the old release is that the mapdrive.pl sometimes
times out when connecting to the Z:\ share and then won't kick-off the z:\bin\todo.pl
-go command, and then installations is stopping. (or could this has happened at the
same time I updated the W2K server with SP4??

What I would need is either a small timeout between the net use command and the --go..
Can you send me a short line of code for this?

It seams like the NIC will take some extra seconds sometimes to connect to the
distribution server and especially in a lager corporation the network speed isn't
always the best.

Or maybe a small wait command before the net use and then a small wait command until
the kick off.

Can you help, or will the procedures be easier in the new release?

Otherwise the mapdrive has helped me a lot, do you have any other interesting scripts??

Currently sitting in the lab with the summer outside and no aircon inside..

Hi Folks,

Just got the nerve to start silent XP installs :). Find that I am
getting
a bunch of "Copy Error" "Setup cannot copy the file .dll.

The file did exists on the share's I386\.dll but not where XP
copies files to on the C: drive.

Not knowing the logic of how Windows decides what to copy from the copy
medium to the local drive, I am wondering if there is an INF file or
some
area that I should be updating to include these files so that they will
be
copied properly?

Also, tried setting up a DELL cd distribution point, but it doesn't seem

to work like a normal XP install CD... Any pointers on how to get it to
actually be useable? It has the $OEM$ at the root of the CD.

Thanks,

Hey, I like the sound of your current project (win2k server stuff). I

I have been having these Setup copy errors for quite some time,
primarily at other sites with crappy networks. I'm encouraged to hear
the possibility that msclient might be a contributor. I'm getting ready
to deploy a new switch at a site where I highly suspect the existing hub

subside after that.

Sounds like another issue which a Linux-based install would fix...

I really am going to do the Linux thing as soon as I can find the time.
I just have no idea when that will be :-(.

(Currently, I am finishing up building an automated install for Win2k

whole lot of no fun.)

Hello, new poster and listener to this list. I'm having a similar DHCP
problems with IBM xseries servers.

We have a cluster of IBM xseries 330 servers, managed with xcat (now IBM
supported) via one main linux node. The management node, as we call it,
is running Linux 7.3 and is the TFTP/DHCP server (works fine on the back
end network (two nics) to do PXE installs of Linux). We are now
attempting to use the same setup to build some servers as Windows 2000
(business request, not personal choice). The x330 family uses Intel Pro
100 NICs, using the E100B.dos driver.

The network boot gets stuck when tcptsr.exe is called to get an address.
Things just hang at this point. I read somewhere on microsoft that
tcptsr.exe would hang without options dhcp-rebinding-time and
dhcp-renewal-time, which both have now been added to dhcpd.conf with a
value of 300 (seconds). still no go.

Anyone have a similar type setup, or run into similar issues with
tcptsr.exe? Is there anything I should specifically include in the
dhcpd.conf file for the address to be returned? I really feel the issue
is on the server end...

Thanks,
Ed

Pat,
Are you guys working on integrating some kind of one-off runtime
"additional applications to install" selection set to choose from, into
the next version? (Or maybe such a thing already exists and I just
haven't been paying enough attention.) I have (a hack) in install.pl
that puts up a menu of about 20 or so "other" applications that are not
a part of any other set that I might want to select (zero or more) to
install. This is how I select the one of about six or seven different
versions of MS Office that we have around here to install on the
machine.
It sounds like you guys are working on being able to authenticate to
the share for drive mapping, mapping failure recovery, etc. These are
things that I have hacks for and are keeping me from synchronizing with
the project. With a menu implementation such as described above (maybe
configured from an ini file or something to define the items in the
menu) I think I would be able to rejoin the project and move forward
with contributions.

We have happily come to rely on our "Unattended" framework. My Sys

Very cool. I read along with much interest. I believe this is the implementation
that I was looking for in order to select one-off packages from a list during install.
I think it needs one more little tweak. How about an optional token on the second
line after ::OPTIONAL for some kind of proper title or description ::DESCRIPTION="MS
Office XP SP1 OLP" to be displayed at install time in the list, instead of, or in
addition to the script name "officexp.bat".

Thanks, Jose!

I decided to implement something based on Shad's approach. Here is
what I did.

  1) Redefine [_meta]/top to be a semicolon-separated list of scripts
instead of a single script. (Note that this retains
backwards-compatibility for the case where there is only one
script.) These scripts will all run after Windows is installed.

  2) Allow the user to pick one "master" script. The list of master
scripts is generated dynamically by scanning Z:\scripts and
finding all .bat files with ":: MASTER" at the start of the first
line. If no qualifying master scripts are found, I fall back to
the current hard coded list, again for backwards-compatibility.

  3) Allow the user to pick zero or more "optional" scripts. The list
of optional scripts is generated dynamically in the same way,
except that the magic token is instead ":: OPTIONAL".

The only catch is that this code runs under DOS, which means the .bat
file names are limited to 8.3. So, I renamed developer.bat to
develop.bat (and made it a "master" script), and I renamed
symantec-antivirus.bat to symav.bat (and made it an optional script).
I also made office2k.bat and officexp.bat into optional scripts.

I am planning to make another release tomorrow. I am hoping to get
two more things done for it... First, integrate Eugene Kotlyarov's
changes (or something like them) to support non-English hotfixes.
Second, allow the install share to be mapped using a different letter
than Z:.

[Unattended] Csv product key examples

2003-10-06 Thread Scott Card
How about some examples of how people are using csv.pl to lookup product
keys? From where and how is it being implemented (site\config.pl)? Any
ideas for functionality to run a command (or set of commands) at the
very end, just before turning autologon off?

Working on synching with v3.1

Thanks,
Scott

[Unattended] Functionality patch & mapznrun.bat mod

2003-10-24 Thread Scott Card
I have found it necessary to add a line in (3.1) install.pl in
create_postinst_bat to run a batch file (dolast.bat) of tasks as the
last operation (before disabling autologon). Either a suggestion of a
better way to accomplish this, or integration into the source would be
helpful. See clip below:

 # Next-to-last step is to disable automatic logon
 'todo.pl "' . $u->{'_meta'}->{'autolog'} . '"',
 ## Doucet: ending tasks
 'todo.pl "%Z%\\site\\dolast.bat"',
 # First step is to perform top-level install of master and

Also, I have made a modification to mapznrun to add some much needed
sleep time and logging between retries:
:try_again
@set COUNT=x%COUNT%
@perl -e sleep(3)
@if not %COUNT% ==  goto mapit
...
:mapit
@echo %time% %date%  Attempting to map Z: drive >>
c:\netinst\logs\mapdrive.log
...

Sounds good. I'm working on 3.2 integration now and found the sleep.
Thanks. I think the "do last" thing is the one last part for me to be

Well, you could add an OPTIONAL script to z:\scripts. If you name it
"zzz.bat", it should sort last and therefore run last :-).

But I like the idea of a site-configurable "do last" script. I will
probably make it a [_meta] parameter instead of hard-coding the script
name, though.

Already added in 3.2. :-)

[Unattended] 3.2 completion bug?

2003-10-29 Thread Scott Card
When 3.2 completes the whole install sequence, it is not removing the
registry run key in HKCU to run mapznrun.bat. It is however setting
autologin=0. This manifests itself as the following sequence after
install is complete:

- Following the final reboot, the machine is left at a login prompt (as
it should).
- If you manually login as local administrator, a command prompt is
shown as it is trying to map the Z: drive, but tempcred.bat has already
been removed, so it is prompting for authentication to map the drive.
- If you don't allow it to map the drive, the same sequence is presented
upon the next login (as local administrator).
- If you input proper username and password for the drive mapping to
succeed, then todo.pl --go is run and the only thing it does is remove
the registry key for next time since there is nothing in the todo list.

Any help is appreciated.
Scott

There are rumors that some OEM versions of XP are "BIOS locked" to a
particular vendor's hardware. I have been skeptical of these rumors,
but perhaps that is the problem.

Can you clarify a bit?

Are you saying that the same installation media and serial number work
on one machine but not on VMware? (This would favor the "BIOS locked"
theory.)

Or are you saying you have two different installation media and the
serial numbers are not compatible between them? (This would be more
what I would expect, and it can be dealt with.)

Take a look at the i386\setupp.ini on one of your CDs. In theory, the
"Pid" string uniquely identifies the kind of product keys which that
media needs.

That should work fine. You just might have to pick the precise media
and product key based on the machine you are installing. I have code to
use a spreadsheet for this... I prompt for our corporate "asset tag" of
the system, and use it as an index into the spreadsheet. Shad has code
which uses the MAC address similarly. I am working on turning these
into real examples, but we can surely share the code with you in advance
of that.

> If this doesn't work I am thinking of just upgrading our company to
> some sort of site license for Windows XP Pro. Any suggestions as to
> what flavor of license I should go for?

To go this route, you want an "Open License". You need to buy five or
more copies of XP to qualify. An Open License is a volume license; the
machines you install will require no activation.

Now, is it strictly legal to buy 5 open licenses and then use the volume
key and media to install your 100 machines, given that those machines
already shipped with an OEM version of XP? I don't see why not... But
if it bothers you, you can do as I mention above and select both the
media and the product key based on the particular machine you are
installing.

Disk/Partition imaging tools to run alongside Unattended
  Can anyone
recommend a good open source/freeware tool for imaging disks and partitions -
and ideally something that fits into the unattended philosophy. Note this is
for a disaster recovery scenario, not multiple installs (Repeat the mantra -
  Imaging Bad. Unattended Good)

  Currently I'm
using a modification of the Unattended PXE boot to map to a
network share containing a copy of the dos version of Norton
Ghost, and make an image of the partition to a compressed file.
Being a cheap skate however, I'd like to save the 50 quid and do it will free
  tools.

  One feature of
Ghost that I can't seem to find in other products is that if you image a 10Gb
partition containing only 2Gb of data, you can end up with a compressed file
of around 1Gb, rather than a bit-for-bit copy of the whole
  10Gb.

  Anyone got any
  ideas?

[Unattended] RE: 4.1a failure notes

2004-05-12 Thread Scott Card
So, I've been tinkering with 4.2rc2 today. The linuxboot hack for the
hard drive on hdc works fine. I'm now able to fully run linuxboot on
these dell inspiron 5150 laptops. The dos boot disk (4.2rc2) still has
major (failure) issues on these laptops (seems due to memory mgt). I
have confirmed (as have others) that changes in 4.2rc2 have no effect on
the DOSemu linuxboot issues in vmware workstation 4.5. However, note
that the linuxboot DOES work in vmware workstation 4.0.1 and vmware GSX
2.5.1! I suspect it will similarly not work with GSX 3 (I don't have my
GSX 3 environment running quite yet. bummer).

Yeah. Looks like they connected the primary hard drive to the secondary
IDE controller. Not that there's anything wrong with that...

This is easy to hack around and harder to fix "right", since hdc is
usually a CD-ROM drive. Still, I have uploaded a 4.2-rc2 which should
work for you to <http://unattended.sourceforge.net/testing/>. Please
try its Linux boot disk and let me know how it goes. (Don't forget to
refresh Z:\install\linuxaux.)

Please try this instead:

This is the only difference I can see between what you have and our

Annoying to do cleanly since the script is machine-generating. But I
can at least add "if errorlevel 1 exit 1".

Try upgrading your version of memdisk to the one we ship. You need to
use 2.0.10-pre1 or later, which supports WinImage (pkzip) style
compressed disk images.

This is my isolinux.cfg:

Perhaps anybody can help me...

Many Thanks!
