Quite often I use a service at http://statcounter.com/

It not only counts, but shows you the pages they were on, what order they
traveled through, how long on each page, referral, and some other bits of
information. Helpful for fine tuning entry/landing pages to larger sites. Free
up to five hundred records (I think) but that simply means it keeps the most
recent 500. For a price you can add more records and other features.

Good luck in that - getting lots of people to see your product is not easy.

At least when VersionTracker and MacUpdate were around you had a couple of
central places where users would look for apps. You could also play the Mac web
sites and blogs to get awareness and exposure every time you released a new
version.

I have a hard time believing that lots of people are drooling at their chances
of building a competitor store to go against the AppStore.

With VersionTracker gone, folded into download.com, download.com is abysmal as
far as I am concerned, there isn't much left.

Apple is stepping in at the right time - for them.

What concerns me most (in addition to not getting customer information!), is
the consumer of apps/software will probably be expecting iPhone/iPad prices.

When I read a comment that "$1.99 is way too much" for something some guy
worked really hard at, I shake my head.

This sort of expectation might be carried over - after all, to the consumer
it's just like the iTunes store - to the "App Store". You have to sell an
awful lot of $1.99 apps to make rent money every month.

If this ends up like iPhone/iPad apps then prices drop to 99¢ for that app you
spent months building. Then Uncle Steve takes his 30% - You get about 70¢ when
you sell one. A few days go by and your app is buried under ten thousand other
apps.

This does not sound like it's worth the effort.

Thanks for the reply Richard.

Yes, tried running from the desktop. I use the Ken Ray chart for folder naming
by means of special numbers and that works well on my Win 7.

My Win 7 is the Ultimate version and he has the Home version, I hope that is
not an issue.

I have tried setting permissions. I also set the permissions of the installer
prior to running the installer.

Tried a simple "Hello World" one button app to rule out any issues that might
be from my code. That does not run either.

I am hoping that if the netbook runs Windows then it should run a simple rev
app.

I don't seem to be able to find any information about currency formatting in

I'm adding up numbers to get a sum for currency use.

So, am I right to assume that when doing something with currency like Sweden

point) when I display the number (post calculations)?

Same goes for the opposite case if a thousands marker for example - switch it

Rev CGI and saving time of event in users time

2010-06-23 Thread jim sims
I'm using a Rev CGI on my server. I am not using iRev, but the older Rev CGI.

When a user clicks, asking for a file, I want to save the time of that event
using the users time. In other words, not the server's location time but what
the user would see wherever they are.

Am I correct in thinking that the way to do this is to have a preference saved
for the user telling me what his time is relative to UTC and then calculate
using the time that would be indicated by the server (using a script on the
server via the Rev CGI stack)?

Might have been me.

My client wanted me to take steps to keep people from saving small video files
that were used by the app, make it very difficult for users to play them
outside the app.

I placed all the videos into user properties - then to view the video, a temp
file was made and that file used the data from the user property to make the
video - after playing the video I would delete the file.

I noticed that on rare occasions the file would appear in the trash on a
reboot, inside a folder (perhaps the folder was named "saved" or "rescued"
items?).

So, I changed my script so that before I deleted the file I would write over
the file with a simple single phrase, thus destroying the video and changing it
to a simple text file.

I just Googled VLC and scripting, there is a limited amount of scripting you

The following is a combo of applescript and shell I found on Google.

The dictionary does state:

The RTFText property is a representation of the styled text of the field in RTF
format.

Setting the RTFText of a field (or a chunk of a field) sets both the text
contents and the font, size, style, and color attributes corresponding to the
information in the RTFString. Any other formatting controls in the RTFstring
are ignored.

To export and re-import field information without losing any style information,
use the htmlText property instead.

I know that you do a lot of server work, so I'll base my answer on that.

I have a CGI Rev app and I store web page html and other bits of text/html as
user properties. When my CGI app receives data, I splice what I want into these
templates and place new bits into the web page for display.

For example, one is a signup info page, that sends names-email add-telephone
etc and then that data gets added into a protected web page.

Yikes! This is one of those "Be careful what you ask for" situations I think.
Haven't soldered a pot since I made shortwave radios and listened to Voice of
the Andes and Radio Moscow!

I guess the simple answer, for me at least, is "Listen to the sound and adjust
by ear" - don't trust numbers. YMMV

As for playing audio, I'm going to explore afplay, and some other options.

OS X 10.5 includes a command line audio player (in /usr/bin) called afplay.
This is very useful if you want to play a sound file from the command line,
shell script, Automator action, etc. The /usr/bin directory is in your path by
default, so you can just type afplay file.mp3 to play that file.

afplay makes use of Core Audio, so I think it can play any audio file that
QuickTime supports (including mp3, aiff, wav, etc.).

There's a very simple man page for afplay, which then tells you that help is
available with afplay -h. There are a few interesting options, including the
ability to play a defined (in time) segment of a file, and to play a file to a
defined audio output device.

Thanks for the quick answers!

sims

The following is for the List Archives, just in case someone else is exploring
the issue some day.

The List Archive is your friend ---
http://www.geofex.com/article_folders/potsecrets/potscret.htm

The human ear does not respond linearly to loudness. It responds to the
logarithm of loudness. That means that for a sound to seem twice as loud, it
has to be almost ten times the actual change in air pressure. For us to have a
control pot that seems to make a linear change in loudness per unit of
rotation, the control must compensate for the human ear's oddity and supply
ever-increasing amounts of signal per unit rotation. This compensating
resistance taper is accurately called a "left hand logarithmic taper" but for
historical reasons has been called an audio or log pot. In these pots, the
wiper traverses resistance very slowly at first, then faster as the rotation
increases. The actual curve looks exponential if you plot resistance or voltage
division ratios per unit of rotation.

If you used an audio/log taper pot for the control of the power supply we
mentioned, the output voltage would increase very slowly at first, creeping up
to maybe 10% of the final output at 50% of the pot rotation. It would then
blast the other 90% in the last half of the rotation - very hard to control.
Likewise, if we used a linear pot for volume control, the volume would come up
dramatically in the first half of pot rotation, and then do very little change
in the last half.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potentiometer

Potentiometers are widely used as user controls, and may control a very wide
variety of equipment functions. The widespread use of potentiometers in
consumer electronics has declined in the 1990s, with digital controls now more
common. However they remain in many applications, such as volume controls and
as position sensors.

Linear potentiometers ("faders")
One of the most common uses for modern low-power potentiometers is as audio
control devices. Both linear pots (also known as "faders") and rotary
potentiometers (commonly called knobs) are regularly used to adjust loudness,
frequency attenuation and other characteristics of audio signals.
The 'log pot' is used as the volume control in audio amplifiers, where it is
also called an "audio taper pot", because the amplituderesponse of the human
ear is also logarithmic. It ensures that, on a volume control marked 0 to 10,
for example, a setting of 5 sounds half as loud as a setting of 10. There is
also an anti-log pot or reverse audio taper which is simply the reverse of a
log pot. It is almost always used in a ganged configuration with a log pot, for
instance, in an audio balance control.

Perhaps a sound engineering or physics expert might provide me with some
insight into my perception of how players, playing sound, work - what the
dynamics of sound are.

When I listen to one player playing a sound at 100% and then listen to two
players playing that same sound but having the playLoudness of both set to 70%,
to my untrained ears that it seems to have the same volume as the one player
set to 100%.

IOW - it seems (to my old compromised ears), that two players playing the same
sound/signal at 70% seem as loud as one player set to 100%.

I cannot discern any difference until I get the two players into the 50% range.

It's as if there is some sort of threshold, where the change in volume becomes
obvious if two players are involved. When I play one player and change the
playLoudness I can near slighter changes in playLoudness percentage.

I'm having a difficult time explaining this...

Is there some known effect that matches up with what I'm trying to explain?

Is there some non-linear multiplier effect? Some formula for this?

I'm assuming that I am planning on setting up code for an application with this
question.

Number one is not something one would want to have in an app, depending upon

I would get the dgData array and dgIndexes and then loop through the records of
the array.

Note that Trevor has a really great web based help system for the datagrids

Perhaps there is a way to do this transparently directly from the
program without saving a copy to the disk but I can't think of it.
Opening a document that comes via email or web download appears to
do this but in actuality they download and store a copy of the

While this might not be a complete solution, maybe it helps: When you
open a document open it as a temp file so at least the file is not
easily grabbed. When your app closes, or maybe even when a viewer in
your app closes or goes to a new item, have it also write over that
temp file with gibberish, or simply have the temp file deleted.

I did that for an app that played videos that were compressed and
saved as custom properties - then reopened as temp files and played.

button - ID number - image object - filename - folder of pngs and jpgs

2009-12-22 Thread jim sims
I've inherited some stacks that use the following method to display
icon images for lots of buttons on OS X.

A separate card in the stack contains hundreds of image objects, each
of these have a filename set to a unique image which resides in a
folder. For example, one such filename is ./Images/PageTitles/
classification.png

These image objects are then referenced by lots of buttons which set
their icons to the ID number of the image object on the above
mentioned 'image card'.

So, the icon ID of a button is set to an image objects ID number but
that image object gets its image from a file in a folder that sits
next to the standalone. Phew.

As there are tons of these referenced objects using ID numbers, I am
hesitant to change the system the person has put into place.

The above system works alright in the IDE if the folder of images is
placed correctly.

My problem is when I make a standalone. The first time the standalone
is run, none of the images (as explained above) appear in the buttons.

However, the second time I open the standalone it all seems to work
fine, all images appear as desired.

If you are still reading this, I am in awe of your patience. ;-)

What can I do to ensure that all these images work the first time the
app is opened?

OT OS X HD Partitioning, multiple OSs

2009-12-04 Thread jim sims

I'm thinking of using VMware Fusion to add at least one version of
Windows or maybe more. This will hopefully be my travel machine that I

need in it.

I usually don't have tons of music, movies, and stuff on my machine so
I think the 160 GB should do.

What have other people done with their machines?

What OS(s) have you loaded - XP, Vista,Windows 7?

If Linux, what flavor might be the best/most common to develop for?

How did you partition it? What sizes for each?

What would you do differently if they did it over again (likely the
most informative question/answer!)?

It isn't too hard to make your own:

1. Download the MetaCard Setup stack from RevOnline. Open it in Rev.
Make sure all the Dictionary options are checked. Run the setup.

2. In Rev, open the MC Dictionary stack you just installed. Click
the Home button and import all the Rev dictionary entries. The "?"
button tells you how.

3. Edit the MC Dictionary stack script and add this handler:

-- JLG: export as HTML file
on exportDict
ask file "Name the HTML export file:"
if it = "" then exit exportDict
 put it into tFileName
 put "" into tP
 set cursor to watch
repeat with x = 2 to the number of cds
put the htmltext of fld "word" of cd x & tP & tP after tData
put the htmltext of fld "type" of cd x & tP & tP after tData
put the htmltext of fld "summary" of cd x & tP & tP after tData
put the htmltext of fld "main" of cd x & tP & tP after tData
put the htmltext of fld "see also" of cd x & tP & tP after tData
put tP & "" & tP after tData
 end repeat
 put tData into url ("file:"&tFileName)
end exportDict

4. Type "exportDict" into the message box. It only takes a second to
create the HTML file.

5. Open the new HTML file in a browser or in Word or anywhere else
you can display it. Print. In the OS X print dialog, choose to
create a PDF file. On Windows, you'll need a PDF print driver to do
that.

It isn't gorgeous but it's all there. You could edit the HTML (or
the export script) before printing to make it prettier.

Re: Software Assurance Explained

Thanks for the detailed email Bill.

Maybe you'll be addressing the web site issues that others have talked
about in another email, but I'll send this anyway.

I also found the RunRev website a bit more complicated than it might
need to be, but I also find tying my shoes a bit complex.

There's a great book named "Don't Make me Think" in which the author
suggests having a few people sit down and use your software or web
site. You sit there and watch/listen as they attempt to find things.
Quite a revealing experience. Then you streamline things a bit, fix 'em.

Clear, direct, few steps (one is ideal) routes to plunking down a
credit card means more revenue. That is a good thing, especially for
us who also use Rev to make a living.

Maybe you already do such testing with the web site... maybe not.

On Nov 17, 2009, at 6:46 PM, William Marriott wrote:

RunRev does have a unique policy of updates and upgrades compared
to, say, Adobe. Instead of paying on a per-version basis, one gets
essentially annual subscriptions to new versions, after the three-
month window you get with new purchases expires.

The reasoning behind this is to even out our revenue over the year,
to put more of a focus on giving attention to what is truly needed
by users (as opposed to coming out with versions "synthetically" on
our own financial timetable), to make it easier for customers to get
the latest versions right away (instead of having to make multiple
purchase decisions frequently), to ensure products built with Rev
are always of the highest available quality (so our customer's
customers are happy), and to eliminate destructive debates over what
should constitute a free "update" versus what warrants a for-fee
"upgrade."

I think it's actually a pretty amazing value for the money. If you
bought Rev 2.9 on Sept 1, 2008 and a software assurance pack on Dec
1, 2008, you would have received Rev 3.0, 3.5, *and* 4.0 as part of
that. Three major new versions for "a single low payment!" Sorry to
sound like a TV pitchman, but isn't that truly remarkable?

Under traditional software upgrade models we could probably have
charged four or five times as much for you to keep current over that
time period. Compare us with, say, FileMaker Inc., which is earning
a reputation for gouging customers with ho-hum upgrades priced quite
close to the new-copy retail. Compare us with the percentage of
retail you pay to upgrade your Adobe software.

We call it software assurance because you are assured that your
software will always be up-to-date. That's something we think
professional developers value. With the addition of the new
automatic updates functionality for all editions, that is becoming
even more of a reality.

For revEnterprise users, it also means access to pre-release builds
and admission to our exclusive "Improve" list (a forum that perhaps
needs to be renamed at some point, as we are now better at acting
upon input for improvement from all corners).

[The term "software assurance" isn't as non-standard as you would
think, by the way. Microsoft calls their similar program exactly
that.]

Although new purchasers are entitled to three months of updates and
upgrades free (so you can be sure you'll get bug fixes, etc.), they
also have a full year of eligibility for the "Early" assurance pack
price. After that, the cost for an assurance pack essentially doubles.

The exception we made for select customers with the offer below is a
very short-term incentive to encourage people who mostly have been
stuck in the 2.9 or even 2.6.1 era to try out the new, much-more-
usable and much-more-capable Rev 4.0. (It's time to come back to the
fold!)

Quite honestly, the behavior we want to encourage is for customers
to purchase Rev, then make the annual assurance plan purchase more
or less automatic. I suppose a downside is that there are some
people who are always going to "kick the tires" before they spend
any more than they have to, but having an assurance plan not only
works out best for you in the long run, but is the best way to
support RunRev's continuing efforts to deliver great software.

p.s.: Think about it: $99/year and you could have gotten three

command enableScrollbarIfNeeded pFldName

2009-11-05 Thread jim sims
In the dictionary user notes for formattedheight, the word "command"
is used where "function" might be used.

Can someone please explain the significance of that to me? Is it
different from a function?

---
I use the formattedHeight property in a handy routine to turn on/off
scrollbars as needed. Just call it every time you change the content
of a field.

command enableScrollbarIfNeeded pFldName
if the formattedHeight of fld pFldName > the height of fld
pFldName then

set the vScrollbar of fld pFldName to true
   else
set the vScrollbar of fld pFldName to false
   end if
end enableScrollbarIfNeeded

TIA,

Re: Anyone know of a hue sort stack?

2009-11-04 Thread Jim Sims

Dr. Campbell,

As you state, the programming involved is not terribly complex.
Perhaps I'd make use of "grab", "mousedown", checking position of
objects. The scoring math should be easy to apply unless there is
something not readily evident in the online example.

I'm sure I could easily produce this for you for a minimal fee.

I've worked on neurological testing applications before. I was the
sole developer for an upper body orthopedic analysis application,
featuring 15 video guided, standard medical tests (Apley's,
Finkelstein's, Phalen's, etc.). The application used the results of
the tests to assign preventative and rehabilitation exercises out of a
set of 100 various video guided exercises.

A very short reference on my experience is at: http://ezpzapps.com/sims/

I'm currently developing an application for a film director in the UK
but am seeking additional work. Diverse portfolios and interests are
good to have.

I'm interested in long term business relationships with people who
present interesting ideas that need to be developed and price my work
accordingly.

Please get in touch if you would like to discuss this or other projects.

Regards,

sims

On my USA keyboard both Shift keys are the same size, unlike the UK

I place my 17" Mac up off my desk for better ergonomics (not beding my

I rescued that UK keyboard from a cruel beating and excessive verbal

There has been a difference in UK and USA keyboards for years.

My UK keyboard has an alt/option key to the right of the command key
SPACE BAR - CMD KEY - ALT/OPTION KEY

My USA keyboard has:
SPACE BAR - CMD KEY - ENTER KEY

There are a few other differences that make me like the US keyboard

Are you saying that now both UK and USA keyboards lack an Enter key?

closeField message is generally not sent when another control (such as

I'm a bit worried about users choosing to save the file into a folder
