Re: [libreoffice-users] Question about Calc and Annotations
Hi :) I don't think it's normal. Please could you let us know which release of LibreOffice you are using? Try Help - About to find out. Also which version of java Tools - Options - Java Although it seems unlikely that java would be involved in that sort of operation (hopefully). The OS you are using might be good to know too. Windows, Ubuntu or some other GnuLinux such as Mint, Mageia, Fedora or whatever, Mac or Bsd? You might find that renaming the UserProfile fixes things as it resets all settings to factory defaults and hides your Extensions/Add-ons/Plug-ins http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/UserProfile Regards from Tom :) --- On Thu, 19/1/12, alex sato amsx...@gmail.com wrote: From: alex sato amsx...@gmail.com Subject: [libreoffice-users] Question about Calc and Annotations To: users@global.libreoffice.org Date: Thursday, 19 January, 2012, 0:04 Is it normal Calc to freeze some minutes when resizing the width of a column in a blank sheet that only has a column filled with 18000 cells with annotation?? Hi :) This is an extremely high-traffic list and that is not made clear to people when they sign-up so it can cause panic. A proper official forum such as most modern projects use (Firefox, Fedora, Ubuntu, Mint and so on and on) would neatly avoid all sorts of recurring problems. But of course we have to stick with some ancient system that makes the project look like something pre-Win95. Even Arch has forums ffs. Re: [libreoffice-users] UNSUBSCRIBE
Hi :) Sorry, good point! Here is a copy of the page ... How to Unsubscribe We have sometimes received complaints from people who have signed-up to our mailing lists (our user support list, for instance, to ask for help with something) and then no longer want to receive messages. Sometimes it's because they've found the solution to their particular problem, and sometimes it's because some of our lists have quite a heavy traffic of posts. This page describes how you can unsubscribe yourself. Please read it thoroughly, as it will most likely help you get your problem solved. If you still have problems after reading this help, a human contact's e-mail address is linked at the bottom of the document. If you don't want to receive messages from our mailing lists anymore, please follow the steps below to unsubscribe. We recommend you not to simply flag messages from our mailing lists as spam just because you don't want to see them in your inbox anymore. Instead, the best solution is to properly unsubscribe from the list(s) concerned. That way, you will really put a permanent end to the unwanted mail. Check what kind of subscription you originally opted for When you subscribe to our mailing lists, there are two ways of receiving posts from the list. In the standard mode, you receive every post to the list individually as soon as it is sent to the list. In digest mode, you receive a single message containing multiple posts, either once per day (if the list traffic is low) or after a certain number of posts have been sent to the mailling list (if the list traffic is high). If you receive messages with individual subjects, of which the subject lines are prefixed with a tag such as [libreoffice-users] (which is the list's identifier tag), then it means that you are subscribed in standard mode.If you receive a message containing a collection of posts, with a subject line starting with words such as Digest of users@global.libreoffice.org (indicating that the message contains a digest of messages from our user support list, in this particular example), then it means that you're subscribed in digest mode.Check which e-mail address you subcribed to the list People sometimes report that they are having problems unsubscribing from a list. Sometimes, the reason is simply that they are not sending the unsubscription request from the same e-mail address that they originally used to sign-up. If you have multiple e-mail addresses and are no longer sure what address you used when you subscribed, please look at the headers of a message from the list (look for a button or link such as Details or Raw Message or Original Message in your e-mail program or webmail page). Your e-mail address will be listed in the Delivered-To entry or the Return-Path entry, such as illustrated below: Delivered-To: john@example.com [...] Return-Path: users-bounces-1234-john.doe=example@global.libreoffice.org Notice that in the Return-Path, your address is embedded in another address, and the @ is replaced by =. After completing the above two steps, you will now know both the subscription type and the subscribed e-mail address, and you can proceed to actually unsubscribe, which is a two-step process: First you send the unsubscription request. Then you confirm that the request was genuinely made by yourself, and was not an abusive request sent by someone else. This is similar to the subscription process, and is referred to as double opt-in/out or confirmed opt-in/out). The process is very similar to the one you had to use to subscribe to the list in first place. Send the unsubscription request If you want to unsubscribe from the users@global.libreoffice.org mailing list (our user support list), for example, send an e-mail message to users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org (if you were subscribed in standard mode) or to users+unsubscribe-dig...@global.libreoffice.org (if you were subscribed in digest mode). The message does not have to contain anything in the subject line or in the body of the message. If your e-mail program or webmail service warns you that you are about to send an empty message, you can ignore the warning and go ahead with sending the message. However, it does not matter if you do enter text in the message subject line or body. Our mailing list software will ignore any contents and no-one will read the message. Only the destination e-mail address is used to recognize your intention to unsubscribe. To repeat what we said above, please do make sure you send this message from the same e-mail address as was used to subscribe to the mailing list, otherwise the unsubscription action will not work. The process is the same for all our lists, and you need to perform this step for every list you want to unsubscribe from. Confirm the request Shortly after sending the unsubscription request (typically just a few seconds later - check for new mail, and look in your spam folder

Re: [libreoffice-users] OT- Kindle usage and documents?
I don't believe the Kindle will recognize an ODT file. It will recognize PDF files, but a letter-sized PDF document will display extremely small on the Kindle. I have found a couple different ways of transferring my LibreWriter files to my $79 Kindle. 1. Save the file as a PDF. Before doing so, I set my page size to 20 picas (3.3 inches) wide by 27 picas (4.5 inches) high and page margins at 2 picas (.3 inches) all around. I also set my typeface to about 10 points. This gives me a page size that displays very nicely on the Kindle without having to zoom and scroll to read the whole page. The advantage to this method is that all formatting (fonts, indents, spacing, etc.) is preserved. The disadvantage is that I lose the ability to change the font size on the Kindle without having to scroll the page right to left. 2. Option two is to save the document as an HTML file. I do this in Writer with the File/Save As menu rather than the File/Send menu as it works better. I then convert the HTML file to a MOBI file using Amazon's Kindlegen utility. It's available at http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8docId=1000234621. It's a command-line utility (takes me back to my DOS days) that converts HTML files to Amazon MOBI format. It works very well. I've used it to convert Writer files with tables of contents and the table is preserved as hyperlinks in the resulting Kindle file. Character formatting (Bold, Italics) is preserved and page formatting is controlled by the Kindle, so no need to scroll horizontally to read a line of text. There is a GUI version called MobiPocket Creator at http://www.mobipocket.com/en/downloadsoft/productdetailscreator.asp. Personally, I prefer the command line Kindlegen, which is on Version 2. Hope this helps. Virgil -Original Message- From: . [libreoffice-users] Need simple find replace macro
I want to migrate my law office from WordPerfect to Libreoffice. My forms have the } character that I use where I want to input text. I created a macro in WordPerfect that searches for that character, deletes it, and leaves the cursor at the position. I've assigned the macro to a key so I can quickly go through documents. Re: [libreoffice-users] Need simple find replace macro
Hi :) I found this link http://www.gmccomb.com/vbafaq.html Apparently the language that WordPerfect uses for macros is Microsoft VBA so it's likely to need to be 'translated' into LibreOffice Basic or something. There seem to be 4 options for macro language in LO, see Tools - Macros - Organise Macros Hmm, now i see the wikipedia page says it uses PerfectScript macro language which is also likely to need to be 'translated'. I liked the line ... WordPerfect macros ... are not embedded in a document. As a result, WordPerfect is not prone to macro viruses or malware, unlike MS Word. but i get the impression that LO macros are also less likely to get infected but for some other reasons. If you post the code here or to the devs list there might be someone that is interested in having a go at translating to LO. There are some awesome people here that are often good like that. Re: [libreoffice-users] Installing LO 3.4.5
Hi :) I think the same instructions still work although there is a wiki-page on how to install versions alongside each other. It's not straight-forwards not it's not hugely tough either. Personally i would recommend uninstalling and reinstalling just because it's easy and free. It's only if you are likely to have sudden dead-lines and need a more familiar version to fall back on. Surely logic says that if all the language packs are disabled by default other than the one for the relevant download, then all the dictionaries should be as well? There is no need to enable or disable anything. You can write (and spell check) English text with Russian figures in a Chinese GUI. GUI language, numeric default locale and default text language are completely independent from each other. Each snippet of text, each table cell, field, input box and what else can be used in its own language context. And for those of us who don't speak 2, 3 or 10 different languages, and only need *one*? Gordon: it is a little easier to first disable the entire Dictionary category (rather than doing each language individually), then expand it and select only the desired language. And I agree with your complaint, but there is something else that bugs me even more... I think the default should be if you do a custom install, the only dictionary in the list should match the language the user chooses. It should be an easier way to do this. I did not like the process it took to install a custom English install and not include all of the other language dictionaries. I do not think that installing 20 or 30 non-English dictionaries BY DEFAULT is the best way to go. For an English user, I do not want to see my Extension Manager list so filled with unused languages that I have a difficult time finding the extensions I did install or want to enable/disable from time to time. Many English users might be turned off by this. For a Windows user, having all these language packs and non-English dictionaries include with their download install file may be go or bad, but it should not be the default to install. Also, if you do have the language packs include, why do you have to download the help packs separately? It does not make sense. Maybe Windows installs should be like Linux's version. If you want any other language than English [and maybe no more than 5 others] you would need to download separate language and help packs for them. Linux users have to do this. It might be better to have Windows users do this as well. Maybe there could be a download option to automatically create a download list for all of the language packs and help packs that the user requests. That way he/she downloads only the languages they want or need. The difference in file size could be 30 to 50 MB, but there might be a better solution than what is going on now. I think that it should not be the default to install all of those dictionaries and language packs if the user does not use a custom install. You should make it clear what is being installed by default so the user can make an informed choice. Then make the custom install process easier and more intuitive to use. If it is not easy for a users with 20 years of experience in installing software to do the process, how easy will it be for user with little experience at installing his/hers own software? We need to make the process simpler. Period. We need to make the default be something other than installing 30 languages over English. Period. We need to make custom installs easier to do. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: How to enter Dates in a format to allow the counting of days lapsed between a from a date cell and a to a date' cell
Here is how I do it. I use Column A for the beginning date,Column B for the ending date, and Row 1 for the column headings. I enter the first beginning date in cell A2 and first ending date in cell B2. I continue adding the beginning and ending dates down these two columns. In cell C2, I enter this formula: =B2-A2. That is I enter the equal sign followed by B2 followed by a minus sign followed by A2. Use the Enter key to enter this formula into cell C2. Click cell C2, and you should see a little box at the bottom right of the outline of this cell. Use the mouse cursor to drag it down column C until you come to the last pair of beginning and ending dates. This will give you the number of days that exist between each pair of dates. --Dan On Thu, 2012-01-19 at 08:25 -0800, Tom wrote: Hi :) I think you are not fully subscribed to the list yet. [libreoffice-users] Suggestions for LibreOffice
I am new to this forum. So please be kind. I have been using LibreOffice for some time now; home use only. I have two suggestions to pose for possible inclusion into LibreOffice. So, here goes. Suggestion One:Include Check for updates to perform online checking for updates to LibreOffice. At present, it appears that the only way to find out if there are any updates is by receiving an email; or maybe by a third-party application ... such as SUMo. Suggestion Two: I would like to see a navigation tool (short-cut) or whatever you call it/them, that when used will send the user to the end of any type document or form and to the end of the last line, data, etc. At present, I have not found any such tool to do this. I have to manually scroll down to the end of the document in order to add more data to a document. This can be very time consuming particularly if there is a large amount of data. This navigation tool needs to be available for all types of documents, forms, data sheets, whatever. Re: [libreoffice-users] Suggestions for LibreOffice
Hi :) It is great to see people offer suggestions and to approach this list first so we can see which team to send ideas to. Most of the teams here have a wish-list or feature request thing to track ideas. Sorry your ideas this time are already implemented or in the process of being added but do keep on thinking up more. Even better would be if you could join one of the teams or just have a look at what they do until you find a team you enjoy being part of or contributing too. Some teams are down the left-hand-side here http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Main_Page or perhaps better to poke around the official site http://www.libreoffice.org/get-involved/ All good stuff :) Many thanks and regards from Tom :) --- On Thu, 19/1/12, Help_Please mykelt...@gmail.com wrote: From: Help_Please mykelt...@gmail.com Subject: [libreoffice-users] Suggestions for LibreOffice To: users@global.libreoffice.org Date: Thursday, 19 January, 2012, 4:07 I am new to this forum. So please be kind. I have been using LibreOffice for some time now; home use only. I have two suggestions to pose for possible inclusion into LibreOffice. So, here goes. Suggestion One: Include Check for updates to perform online checking for updates to LibreOffice. Anyway, thanks for listening. -- View this message in context: http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/Suggestions-for-LibreOffice-tp3671431p3671431.html Sent from the Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com. -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

Re: [libreoffice-users] calc: unnumbered rows
Hi :) I don't think it's possible unless we are talking about different things, which is highly likely! Across the top columns are given numbers and down the side the rows are given numbers but this is only so that you can make reference to a specific cell. A bit like map references. Those letters and numbers do not appear if you print the spreadsheet (hmm, i think you can force it to show them but it's not easy). You can't create an un-numbered row in those numbers. However we might be talking about different things. 1. If you have a column of numbers then you can insert an empty cell to create an empty space. 2. Or if you move the mouse arrow between 2 row numbers so that it hovers on the line between them then you could drag a row to be twice as tall. It's trick to do this first time but incredibly simple from then on. The trick is to watch for the change in the mouse arrow's pointer. I'm not completely sure what level of user you are. So, many apologies if i am going tooo fast or tooo slow! Doug: My ultimate goal is to migrate from Windows to Linux. Before I do that I need to assure myself that software running under Linux can do what I've been doing in the past with various Windows programs. I'm very comfortable with WordPerfect having used it for almost 25 years. Nevertheless, like much software I only use a small fraction of its capabilities. Re: [libreoffice-users] Question about Calc and Annotations
Hi :) On 1 machine can you try switch off Java in LibreOffice? Tools - Options - Java This is just a test to see if java is causing the problem but it's unlikely. It's just that freezing and slow-downs fit the pattern. Wizards and some Extensions use java. So does Base if you use the in-built back-end. So, it's possible that you might be able to do without java completely if you are lucky. If you do need it then you tend to get error messages rather than data-loss. In which case you just switch java back on and then re-open LO with no harm done. First move the existing settings to a backup file: $ mv ~/.libreoffice/3/ ~/.libreoffice/3.back Then copy the OOo settings to LO: $ cp -R ~/.openoffice.org/3/ ~/.libreoffice/3/ If you run into any issues, you can always move ~/.libreoffice/3.back to ~/.libreoffice/3. -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

Or any other suggestion, maybe? Thank you. AFAIK there are no patches available to update LO from an older version to a newer version. If downloading is your only option (see below) I might only update about 12 - 18 months from one major version to the next (3.4 to 3.5). There are a couple of CD/DVD packages available, semi-officially, from various national groups. I know there is a North American DVD available. Where are you? You might check with your local user group for the availability of a CD/DVD What OS are you using? Which version are you using?
