Hello Roger,
It is not supposed to work like this. LibreOffice is not a drop in
replacement for any other software. You can import complex and
proprietary foreign file formats in order to create your own ODF
documents to work with. The import accuracy is fairly well with .doc and
.xls, it is not so good with .ppt.
Your ODF documents should be fully compatible across several
applications. Of course MS will never really support ODF. They do not
support any file format they do not control.
If and only if you want to share an office file with a co-editor who can
not install ODF capable software, then you may send him doc/xls/ppt
copies of your ODF documents together with a PDF version so he/she can
compare the intended layout in a PDF viewer with the actual layout in
his software.
First of all you should care about the fonts used in your documents.
This office suite can not transfer any fonts embedded in the sent
documents. If your font is not installed on the other machine, the
overall look and pagination will differ for sure.
Since you are writing about 2 of your own computers, I'd suggest to use
the same software on both machines.

Hope this helps,
Andreas

[libreoffice-users] How to use GTK open dialog box in LibreOffice

2012-02-28 Thread Arnaud Champollion

Hello,

I have LibreOffice on Debian, with Mate desktop.

I would like LibreOffice to use GTK open dialog box in LibreOffice,
instead of its own dialog box.

I've got libreoffice-gtk and libreoffice-gnome packages installed, but I
don't have the option in Tools -- General.

LibreOffice only shows me its own open/save dialog box.

Can anyone help me to set it ?

Thank you,

Create a brand new database (relational, embedded HSQLDB).
Drag the table icons from your dBase connection into the new database.
Do what you want in the new database.
Note: HSQL tables need a primary key in order to be editable.

 1) Very few people in the world are willing to take the time to

 2) I'm not sure that there is a consensus for the answer to this

Re: [libreoffice-users] Presentation conversion to/from Powerpoint - layout

2012-02-28 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
It might be better to convert to Odp and then it should look the same on both
machines.

According to Microsoft you can expect differences in the way documents are
displayed between their different operating systems.  A file produced in MS
Office 2010 on Xp might well look different if it's displayed in MS Office 2010
on Win7 even if they use the same printer and all settings are as close as they
can be.    Odp tends to look the same.

Usually the older formats tend to work better, Ppt rather than PptX or Odp 1.1
rather than the default Odp 1.2 (Extended). If you really need things to look
exactly the same then an uneditable format such as Pdf would be better.

I have Powerpoint on one machine and LibreOffice on another. I want to be
able to edit and save PowerPoints on either machine. However, when loading
Ppt in Presentation it does not always convert font and layout properly.
Occasional tabs or spaces are missing or duplicated; occasional text boxes
have text outside the slide, etc.

Then when I then save the presentation as ppt it changes the font, for
example, from bold to basic and shows tabs or spaces (see above) as missing.

Is there some way of ensuring that the conversions are consistent and
presentations can be switched back and forth?

As a separate issue, in some cases Presentation show jpg's as sqeezed in
the slide listing on the left, although they are OK when I click on the
slide or when I do the show.

Sadly, this is true.
You may use a hierarchy of forms and subforms to mimic relations on form
level (display records in subform that are related to the selected item
in the parent form).
You may use another dBase driver. If I remember correctly, there is one
for Windows ODBC.

[libreoffice-users] Unprotecting table cells

2012-02-28 Thread Torquil Macdonald Sørensen

Hi!

I've read many questions and answers regarding unprotection of table cells,
however none of the replies I have seen worked in my case.

When I try to edit a table cell text, I get the famous popup saying Readonly
content cannot be changed. No modifications will be accepted. However, I can
edit the content of some of the other cells in the same table.

I do have read-write permission on the filesystem level. As mentioned, I can
edit some other parts of the document.

There is no unprotect option in the cell submenu on the right-click context
menu in the cell. It only says No selection possible in greyed out text.

Format - Sections is greyed out, so I have no access to any security settings
there.

The file properties shows that the document has no password protection. Nothing
is activated on the Security tab there.

One reply mentioned something about Design Mode, but I could not edit the text
after activating that either.

I'm using Libreoffice 3.4.5 OOO340m1 (Build:502) on Debian Sid Linux.

Any ideas? This is often a problem for me when filling out downloadable forms
with Libreoffice. Does it have some sort of Make everything editable option?
That would have saved me many hours...

Best regards,
Torquil Sørensen

A spreadsheet (ods) I have been using a while broke, and now Calc won't
open it. Also alternatives refuse to open it. Passing it through
http://odf-validator.rhcloud.com/ led to the following result (note the
*Fatal*) below.

Now I know that I can unzip the document, search for the offending
attribute, delete this and rezip - and of course that didn't work.

The point is, in 6 years that I use OO, and LO intensively I never had
this before. And recently I saw other mentions on this list of broken
Calc spreadsheets.

I think there is a regression in Calc. I am using LO 3.4.4 from Ubuntu.

Congrats!  Nicely done! :))

Renaming the user Profile often fixes all sorts of weird things.  Deleting also
works but then you wouldn't have a back-up of all the Extensions and stuff.
You kinda covered some of that by backing-up the templates folder which was
pretty cool.

So, congrats and regards from

This is the same in OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice, Excel, Gnumeric and
other spreadsheet programs.
menu:ToolsProtectionSheet=OFF opens the locks of all the cells on that

FormatCellsTab:Protection allows you to add or remove a lock to

protection closes all cell locks.
By default all cells have a lock, so the sheet protection locks all
cell. You have to remove the locks from those cells you want to keep

I hope my problem is not the same as this:

http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7t=19668

That one seems to be unsolvable without having access to MS Word:

As of this moment the bug still exists in OO 3.1.1 for Windows, I haven't
checked my Linux or Mac systems yet. OO Writer honours the protection status of
a document but doesn't have any way of changing it. If a document has been
locked in MS Word there is no way to unlock it without passing it through a copy
of Word.

My document was originally a *.doc, probably created in MS Word. When I saved my
first modified version, I let Libreoffice save it as an ODT-file.

That issue refers to the fact that you can only connect one database per
database document.

This topic is about joining tables of the same dBase source.

SELECT * FROM A JOIN B ON A.F1 = B.F1
SELECT * FROM A,B WHERE A.F1 = B.F1

which is impossible in any of the file based database connections.
The former Base developers did not recognize the importance of dBase.

[libreoffice-users] Can several instances of soffice be run in parallel?

2012-02-28 Thread Apollo
I have the following issue on my Intel i7 920 processor with Windows 7 x64
pro system:

About the background:

I have several documents opened in Libreoffice Calc, Writer and so on, but
whenever I try to open a large CSV file (ie: 20MB in size) the entire
Libreoffice suite becomes unresponsive until the Calc has finished opening
the CSV file.

It would seem each instance of Calc, write and so on rely only on the single
soffice.bin application.
During the opening of the CSV file, soffice.bin uses only 1 thread thus
stalling all the other instance of Libreoffice.

Solutions:

Is there a way to enable Libreoffice to run multi-threaded, or simply to
have Calc, Writer use a dedicated instance of soffice.bin?

I can run LibO 3.3.x and 3.5 and OpenOffice.org in parallel. If the same
office occurs twice in your task manager you should save your work and
kill all instances because this state is rather unstable.

We get editable relations from relational database servers if the
connecting database driver supports this. So called file based
databases are:
dBase, plain text (csv), spreadsheets, mail client address books, LDAP
provide a minumum of functionality, mainly because most of them are no
databases at all.
dBase is the only editable and indexable type of file based database and
the built-in driver should support relations as well.
File based databases are important sources for mail merge. Spreadsheets
are most commonly used but worst choice.

Supported SQL functions of file based databases:

Re: [libreoffice-users] Presentation conversion to/from Powerpoint - layout

2012-02-28 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
We successfully use MS Office alongside LibreOffice and it works out quite
well.

We tend to keep each document in one or the other rather than trying to convert
the documents to-and-fro.  So, for out newsletter we use LO because it's better
with graphics and seems happier with larger (byte-wise) documents.  Clients
occasionally send us things in odf format.  Unfortunately we have a couple of
crucial documents with macros that were written for MSO 2010.  Also people are
wowed by the ribbon-bar and think that if something was that expensive and that
much of a hassle to install then it must be great.

So, we stick to having both because they each provide something useful that
the other doesn't.

If you are having troubles in getting permissions to install LibreOffice on the
other machine then perhaps try it as a portable app on a usb-stick
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/portable/
This allows you to customise LibreOffice and then just plug the usb-stick into
any machine to use your customisations.

Regards from
Tom :)

I think it might just be that you have to reboot your machine after an

http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/file/n3785115/mouse-reboot.jpg
mouse-reboot.jpg
Not a genuine message of course but it felt about right at the time.

Instead of uninstalling perhaps try just renaming your User Profile as that
does what most people expect an uninstallreinstall to do
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/UserProfile

Also with Vista it has some strange permissions thing that tries to block
unwanted events from happening so perhaps it's the UAE or something blocking
the install? Perhaps try downloading LIbreOffice 3.4.5 from the official
web-site
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/?type=win-x86lang=en-US
I got there by choosing the option
Change system, version or language - and then choose US as the language.

Re: [libreoffice-users] How to use GTK open dialog box in LibreOffice

2012-02-28 Thread Mirosław Zalewski
Hi

It seems that LO fails to recognize MATE as GNOME/GTK-based desktop. You can
try running LO like that:

OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome libreoffice

This way I was able to force GNOME file-picker on my KDE box.

If you would like to force GTK everytime, try adding:

export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome

into your ~/.bashrc (or similar, depending on your shell) or ~/.profile (AFAIR
GDM from GNOME 2 read latter file on login; don't know about MATE and I don't
know what login manager you are using).

I think that variable name is quite misleading. Perhaps no one noticed it yet.
Will you be able to find few minutes and file bug report about it on LO
bugzilla? Or at least send message to developers mailing list (maybe it should
be discussed first)?

Ok, might as well start at the deep end I suppose.

 Hi Deon,

I'd encourage you to search on the web for OpenOffice.org training and
contact whoever provides such training clearly indicating your goals,
budget (or lack thereof) and timelines. If someone already offers free
or paid training for OOo, there are high chances they will consider
adapting their material or using the existing material from LibreOffice
 to help you.

I had a good experience in the pas with Solveig Haugland -

You can also try Lanedo in Germany http://www.lanedo.com/libreoffice.html

I know there are training, free training, sited for LibreOffice out
there. I remember seeing one or two a few months ago. After LO became
the office package for Linux distros, I started to see links that were
LO training.

If we tell people to use OOo training for LO, would the just encourage
the users to try OOo and use it?

Please read again carefully. I didn't advise to seek OOo training, but
rather OOo /trainers/. LibO being a close relative, they will most
probably consider adding it (or replacing OOo) to their offering.

By going to Google, I found a few sites that offer training in/with
LibreOffice. Yes OOo training has more links, but it has been around for
a longer time. Last year there were posts about training offerings for LO.

SO if a person wants LO training, give that person references to LO
training, not OOo. Offer that person the links to our Guides and other
documentation.

Guide and documentation are, at most, self-learning, not training.

Sorry if I assumed you meant human-led training ;)

[libreoffice-users] LibreO-Base report layout problem

2012-02-28 Thread Pertti Rönnberg

Dear you out there,
I am working on a database (LibreO-Base 3.4.5, Win7Prof/32bit) that will
result in a multipage-multicolumn report and have made the report using
the Report Builder.

My intention is to
have the report's name and the column headings page number on
the first page (= sections 'Report Header' 'Page Header' visible)
and only column headings page number(s) on the next pages (=
section 'Page Header' visible)

According to the guides this a real feature and should be possible -
like in MSAccess - by means of mixing with the sections 'Report
Header/Footer', 'Page Header/Footer', 'Group Header/Footer' and the
property options 'Force New Page' and 'visible/not visible'.

There is one group name level above the 'detail' level data.
I think I have tried all possible combinations and have got the pages
2..(n) OK but the first page still fails:
if section 'Page Header' is put to 'not visible' there are no
column headings at all nowhere
if section 'Page Header' is 'visible' it is on every page - first
page included - but placed above the report name
if the column heading fields are put in the section 'Report
Header' all the text in this section is visible on every page

Please somebody, tell me how to do?
Where can I find any instructions about the logic procedure in that mixing?

A minor problem:
There is a tool/button 'horizontal line' but the line drawn is not
visible in preview!

Regards
Pertti Rönnberg

[libreoffice-users] LO 3.5 Templates

2012-02-28 Thread Keith Bates

I made a big mistake this morning.

I upgraded to 3.5- I'm using Ubuntu 11.10. Installed from the
libreoffice ppa

I discovered early that it won't print multiple copies.

I tried to revert to 3.4 by removing 3.4 and re-installing. It wouldn't
start up.

Now I find that I can't use templates. There is not even a templates
folder in the organize templates module.

The templates exist but just can't be used.

If I try to use a template I get an error message templates already
exists. If I try to open them as documents and save them as templates I
get another similar error about them already existing- no option to
overwrite.

Has anyone come across any of this insanity?

There are many bugs that seem to occur after so-called upgrade.
People who make the effort to report bugs: please consider how
important each bug is. If it is of major importance, the ability to
remove the bug must become part of the quality assurance manual test,
i.e. the software version is not passed as good quality until that bug
 is removed.

Testing for the success in solving the bug needs to be approved by
using 'litmus' (https://tcm.documentfoundation.org). So, the behaviour
that caused the bug needs to be recorded and entered into litmus.

This should prevent regression bugs and improve software quality in
 the long-term.

Cool. Have you *actually* installed 3.5.1rc1 (as noted in the litmus test)?
Description:Test run for *3.5.1 RC* regression testing. Please use
*3.5.1 RC* build to test the cases in this run.

If you did (and you'd need to find it someplace other than:
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/pre-releases/ and (currently) only
on http://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/daily/
you'd find that the install (at least on a debian linux system) smokes
your existing 3.5.0 install (remember 3.5.0 is the released version).

So, while I (we?) appreciate your efforts to get users on this user
list as pre-release testers, I'd be overly cautious about asking users
on this list to perform litmus tests... At least not without explaining
in *detail* what is required, and how to avoid existing LO standard
installations being blown away by a pre-release version.

IMO it's probably better for 'users' on this list to wait to
test/participate when http://www.libreoffice.org/download/pre-releases/
actually shows a pre-release version. *And* testers understand the
implications of testing. This will avoid the LO blew up my thesis and
wiped out all of my exisiting templates/files/settings. (Note: I'm not
making light of those that do report such, but instead trying to avoid
such reports here in the first place as they are *serious* issues can
happen if you don't understand what you are doing when you test.)

[libreoffice-users] Headless mode examples for socket and pipe methods.

2012-02-28 Thread Harry Simons

Hello.

Using LibreOffice 3.4/3.5.

I want to run LibreOffice in--headlessmode for
converting files from .doc to .txt, and want to try outboththe socket and
pipe methods.

However, what is not clear to me is this...

1) With thesocketmethod: If I specify an
arbitrary port (instead of the default 8100) in the--acceptargument, how
does the the connecting client (a shell script) know
about this port. In other words, where/how do I specify the port
in the connecting client shell script?

2) With thepipemethod: Do I have to create
the pipe myself (usingmkfifo)beforepassing its name to
the--acceptargument, or will
LibreOffice automatically create the pipe for me? Further, how do
I tell the connecting client (again, a shell script) about the
  name of this pipe?

Would greatly appreciate if you could give an example invocation
each for the listening and connecting sides, for both the socket
and pipe methods. I have searched the Net far and wide but haven't
  found any relevant information.

Many thanks in advance,

/HS

[libreoffice-users] Delayed Execution of a Formula in Calc

2012-02-28 Thread James E. Lang

I am using LibreOffice 3.4.4 on Kubuntu 11.10.

I think my problem may be with an attempt by LO (and most likely with OOo as
well) to optimize processing by immediately recalculating only those cells that
are on the currently active sheet or those on other sheets that are _known_ to
cause changes on the active sheet. Two examples of cells where immediate
recalculation may be delayed are those in which a user written function or the
INFO() function is involved. If this is the case, is there a way to set a
preference to always recalculate everything? This should not hurt performance
in a noticable way when dealing with a small document. I recognize that
recalculating large complex spreadsheets can be a very intense operation so a
warning associated with the selection of the option would be very appropriate.

In case I have misdiagnosed the cause of my grief, here is my problem and the
circumstances surrounding it. In Sheet4.C5 I have a formula that is not getting
executed when the cells it references get changed. Instead, it gets executed
when the next automatic backup occurs after the change of status of the
referenced cells, when F9 is pressed to recalculate the whole document, or when
Sheet4 is manually selected for viewing. In no case that I have found so far is
this action performed immediately. Since I change the cell and thus cause this
formula to be activated just before I start driving, I end up closing the
laptop cover before an automatic backup occurs. That puts the computer to sleep
which makes the timestamp that is generated of little use for my purposes. I
have tweaked the environment by setting the automatic backup cycle to one
minute but that is only a kludge and in any case it still does not solve the
problem in the case where I close the cover of the laptop computer and it goes
to sleep.

This is the formula in Sheet4.C5. Note that it calls a function that I wrote in
OOoBasic (aka StarBasic):

=IF(ISNUMBER(Sheet3.D5),IF(ISNUMBER(Sheet3.A5),A,fnTStamp(2,0,ROW()-1)),B)

Here is the code for my function fnTStamp():

Function fnTStamp(nSheet, nColumn, nRow)
' === Parameters nSheet, nColumn, and nRow specify the location of the cell
' === into which a static timestamp is to be stored.
' === The numbers are zero based.
' =
' === Definitions for the local variables used within this Function
  Dim oDoc as object
  Dim oSheet as object
  Dim oCell as object
  Dim nFormat as integer
' === I don't know the proper type for the next variable so it is variant here
' === Neither string nor integer worked.
  Dim CharLocale
  Dim nFormatId as integer
' === Initialize variables oDoc, oSheet, and oCell for the target
  oDoc = thisComponent
  oSheet = oDoc.getSheets().getByIndex(nSheet)
  oCell = oSheet.getCellByPosition(nColumn, nRow)
' === Get the format id number for HH:MM for this document's locale
  CharLocale = oDoc.getPropertyValue(CharLocale)
  nFormatId = oDoc.getNumberFormats.queryKey(HH:MM, CharLocale, false)
  If nFormatId = -1 then
nFormatId = oDoc.getNumberFormats.addNew(HH:MM, CharLocale)
  End If
' === Store the HH:MM formatted static timestamp into the target cell
' === Also set the format by which this timestamp is displayed
  oCell.Value = now
  oCell.setPropertyValue(NumberFormat, nFormatId)
' === Return the string C to the cell from which this function was called
  fnTStamp = C
End Function

Sheet3.D5 starts out with this formula that evaluates to either the value 0 or
an empty string ().

 =IF(C5=Reset,0,)

I often overwrite that formula with a number. The normal content of Sheet3.D5
is . Sheet3.A5 starts out unformatted and totally empty. I key a number into
Sheet3.D5 and tab out of that cell or cause its formula to evaluate to 0.0 by
changing Sheet3.C5 to the string Reset. Nothing appears to happen until the
next automatic backup or until I tell LO to recalculate everything (F9). Then
the time at that moment appears in Sheet3.A5.

The delayed processing of the formula does not make sense to me. Does anyone
have a clue as to why this happens and, more to the point, how I can solve the
problem.

In the production version of this document both Sheet3.D5:D98 and Sheet4.C5:C98
are filled downward. It also contains similar formulas in Sheet4.C2:C93
relating to cells in corresponding rows of Sheet2.

Maybe I didn't paste it at the right place. I've seen there was if

I think that variable name is quite misleading. Perhaps no one noticed it yet.
Will you be able to find few minutes and file bug report about it on LO

OK. I'll do when I've solved the problem, so I can give a complete report.
