Am 28.02.2012 01:10, Roger Sawkins wrote: I have Powerpoint on one machine and LibreOffice on another. I want to be able to edit and save PowerPoints on either machine. Hello Roger, It is not supposed to work like this. LibreOffice is not a drop in replacement for any other software. You can import complex and proprietary foreign file formats in order to create your own ODF documents to work with. The import accuracy is fairly well with .doc and .xls, it is not so good with .ppt. Your ODF documents should be fully compatible across several applications. Of course MS will never really support ODF. They do not support any file format they do not control. If and only if you want to share an office file with a co-editor who can not install ODF capable software, then you may send him doc/xls/ppt copies of your ODF documents together with a PDF version so he/she can compare the intended layout in a PDF viewer with the actual layout in his software. First of all you should care about the fonts used in your documents. This office suite can not transfer any fonts embedded in the sent documents. If your font is not installed on the other machine, the overall look and pagination will differ for sure. Since you are writing about 2 of your own computers, I'd suggest to use the same software on both machines. Re: [libreoffice-users] Presentation conversion to/from Powerpoint - layout
Hi :) It might be better to convert to Odp and then it should look the same on both machines. According to Microsoft you can expect differences in the way documents are displayed between their different operating systems. A file produced in MS Office 2010 on Xp might well look different if it's displayed in MS Office 2010 on Win7 even if they use the same printer and all settings are as close as they can be. Odp tends to look the same. Usually the older formats tend to work better, Ppt rather than PptX or Odp 1.1 rather than the default Odp 1.2 (Extended). If you really need things to look exactly the same then an uneditable format such as Pdf would be better. Is there some way of ensuring that the conversions are consistent and presentations can be switched back and forth? As a separate issue, in some cases Presentation show jpg's as sqeezed in the slide listing on the left, although they are OK when I click on the slide or when I do the show. [libreoffice-users] Unprotecting table cells
Hi! I've read many questions and answers regarding unprotection of table cells, however none of the replies I have seen worked in my case. When I try to edit a table cell text, I get the famous popup saying Readonly content cannot be changed. No modifications will be accepted. However, I can edit the content of some of the other cells in the same table. I do have read-write permission on the filesystem level. As mentioned, I can edit some other parts of the document. There is no unprotect option in the cell submenu on the right-click context menu in the cell. It only says No selection possible in greyed out text. Format - Sections is greyed out, so I have no access to any security settings there. The file properties shows that the document has no password protection. Nothing is activated on the Security tab there. One reply mentioned something about Design Mode, but I could not edit the text after activating that either. I'm using Libreoffice 3.4.5 OOO340m1 (Build:502) on Debian Sid Linux. Any ideas? This is often a problem for me when filling out downloadable forms with Libreoffice. Does it have some sort of Make everything editable option? That would have saved me many hours... Re: [libreoffice-users] Presentation conversion to/from Powerpoint - layout
Hi :) We successfully use MS Office alongside LibreOffice and it works out quite well. We tend to keep each document in one or the other rather than trying to convert the documents to-and-fro. So, for out newsletter we use LO because it's better with graphics and seems happier with larger (byte-wise) documents. Clients occasionally send us things in odf format. Unfortunately we have a couple of crucial documents with macros that were written for MSO 2010. Also people are wowed by the ribbon-bar and think that if something was that expensive and that much of a hassle to install then it must be great. So, we stick to having both because they each provide something useful that the other doesn't. If you are having troubles in getting permissions to install LibreOffice on the other machine then perhaps try it as a portable app on a usb-stick http://www.libreoffice.org/download/portable/ This allows you to customise LibreOffice and then just plug the usb-stick into any machine to use your customisations. You can try running LO like that: OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome libreoffice This way I was able to force GNOME file-picker on my KDE box. If you would like to force GTK everytime, try adding: export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome into your ~/.bashrc (or similar, depending on your shell) or ~/.profile (AFAIR GDM from GNOME 2 read latter file on login; don't know about MATE and I don't know what login manager you are using). [libreoffice-users] LibreO-Base report layout problem
Dear you out there, I am working on a database (LibreO-Base 3.4.5, Win7Prof/32bit) that will result in a multipage-multicolumn report and have made the report using the Report Builder. My intention is to have the report's name and the column headings page number on the first page (= sections 'Report Header' 'Page Header' visible) and only column headings page number(s) on the next pages (= section 'Page Header' visible) According to the guides this a real feature and should be possible - like in MSAccess - by means of mixing with the sections 'Report Header/Footer', 'Page Header/Footer', 'Group Header/Footer' and the property options 'Force New Page' and 'visible/not visible'. There is one group name level above the 'detail' level data. I think I have tried all possible combinations and have got the pages 2..(n) OK but the first page still fails: if section 'Page Header' is put to 'not visible' there are no column headings at all nowhere if section 'Page Header' is 'visible' it is on every page - first page included - but placed above the report name if the column heading fields are put in the section 'Report Header' all the text in this section is visible on every page Please somebody, tell me how to do? Where can I find any instructions about the logic procedure in that mixing? A minor problem: There is a tool/button 'horizontal line' but the line drawn is not visible in preview! (Note: I'm not making light of those that do report such, but instead trying to avoid such reports here in the first place as they are *serious* issues can happen if you don't understand what you are doing when you test.) [libreoffice-users] Closing Calc Documents
On SOME occasions (not all), after I close a calc doc, my Windows Explorer still shows it as open. To remove the lock-file name entry in Explorer, I must reopen the doc and close it again. This usually gets the job done. Is this a bug, or am I not closing the doc properly? I usually hit the big red X to close (but sometimes the little black X to just close the doc and not calc. [libreoffice-users] Headless mode examples for socket and pipe methods.
Hello. Using LibreOffice 3.4/3.5. I want to run LibreOffice in--headlessmode for converting files from .doc to .txt, and want to try outboththe socket and pipe methods. However, what is not clear to me is this... 1) With thesocketmethod: If I specify an arbitrary port (instead of the default 8100) in the--acceptargument, how does the the connecting client (a shell script) know about this port. In other words, where/how do I specify the port in the connecting client shell script? 2) With thepipemethod: Do I have to create the pipe myself (usingmkfifo)beforepassing its name to the--acceptargument, or will LibreOffice automatically create the pipe for me? Further, how do I tell the connecting client (again, a shell script) about the name of this pipe? Would greatly appreciate if you could give an example invocation each for the listening and connecting sides, for both the socket and pipe methods. I have searched the Net far and wide but haven't found any relevant information. Many thanks in advance, /HS -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
[libreoffice-users] Delayed Execution of a Formula in Calc
I am using LibreOffice 3.4.4 on Kubuntu 11.10. I think my problem may be with an attempt by LO (and most likely with OOo as well) to optimize processing by immediately recalculating only those cells that are on the currently active sheet or those on other sheets that are _known_ to cause changes on the active sheet. Two examples of cells where immediate recalculation may be delayed are those in which a user written function or the INFO() function is involved. If this is the case, is there a way to set a preference to always recalculate everything? This should not hurt performance in a noticable way when dealing with a small document. I recognize that recalculating large complex spreadsheets can be a very intense operation so a warning associated with the selection of the option would be very appropriate. In case I have misdiagnosed the cause of my grief, here is my problem and the circumstances surrounding it. In Sheet4.C5 I have a formula that is not getting executed when the cells it references get changed. Instead, it gets executed when the next automatic backup occurs after the change of status of the referenced cells, when F9 is pressed to recalculate the whole document, or when Sheet4 is manually selected for viewing. In no case that I have found so far is this action performed immediately. Since I change the cell and thus cause this formula to be activated just before I start driving, I end up closing the laptop cover before an automatic backup occurs. That puts the computer to sleep which makes the timestamp that is generated of little use for my purposes. I have tweaked the environment by setting the automatic backup cycle to one minute but that is only a kludge and in any case it still does not solve the problem in the case where I close the cover of the laptop computer and it goes to sleep. This is the formula in Sheet4.C5. Note that it calls a function that I wrote in OOoBasic (aka StarBasic): =IF(ISNUMBER(Sheet3.D5),IF(ISNUMBER(Sheet3.A5),A,fnTStamp(2,0,ROW()-1)),B) Here is the code for my function fnTStamp(): Function fnTStamp(nSheet, nColumn, nRow) ' === Parameters nSheet, nColumn, and nRow specify the location of the cell ' === into which a static timestamp is to be stored. ' === The numbers are zero based. ' = ' === Definitions for the local variables used within this Function Dim oDoc as object Dim oSheet as object Dim oCell as object Dim nFormat as integer ' === I don't know the proper type for the next variable so it is variant here ' === Neither string nor integer worked. Dim CharLocale Dim nFormatId as integer ' === Initialize variables oDoc, oSheet, and oCell for the target oDoc = thisComponent oSheet = oDoc.getSheets().getByIndex(nSheet) oCell = oSheet.getCellByPosition(nColumn, nRow) ' === Get the format id number for HH:MM for this document's locale CharLocale = oDoc.getPropertyValue(CharLocale) nFormatId = oDoc.getNumberFormats.queryKey(HH:MM, CharLocale, false) If nFormatId = -1 then nFormatId = oDoc.getNumberFormats.addNew(HH:MM, CharLocale) End If ' === Store the HH:MM formatted static timestamp into the target cell ' === Also set the format by which this timestamp is displayed oCell.Value = now oCell.setPropertyValue(NumberFormat, nFormatId) ' === Return the string C to the cell from which this function was called fnTStamp = C End Function Sheet3.D5 starts out with this formula that evaluates to either the value 0 or an empty string (). =IF(C5=Reset,0,) I often overwrite that formula with a number. The normal content of Sheet3.D5 is . Sheet3.A5 starts out unformatted and totally empty. I key a number into Sheet3.D5 and tab out of that cell or cause its formula to evaluate to 0.0 by changing Sheet3.C5 to the string Reset. Nothing appears to happen until the next automatic backup or until I tell LO to recalculate everything (F9). Then the time at that moment appears in Sheet3.A5. The delayed processing of the formula does not make sense to me. Does anyone have a clue as to why this happens and, more to the point, how I can solve the problem. In the production version of this document both Sheet3.D5:D98 and Sheet4.C5:C98 are filled downward. It also contains similar formulas in Sheet4.C2:C93 relating to cells in corresponding rows of Sheet2. -- Jim -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

Hey Andreas,Please treat this question as a headless question from a headless one.I'm on RHEL 5, so cannot used Windows-based solutions. LO being multi-megabyte is not an issue as long as it works.I forgot: Did you play with the command line options of LibreOffice?Yes, I have been playing and reading and reading and playing for the last several hours. I admit I'm not a good code-reader and I'm reading in a very rushed-mode also.I, for example, tried the following to start the LO as listener:$ soffice.bin --headless --accept='socket,host=0,port=8100,tcpNoDelay=1;urp;'[2] 13628$ netstat -tnap | grep sofficetcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:8100 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 13628/soffice.bin So, clearly soffice is listening now.To connect, I'm issuing the following but don't really know if this what is needed to be done. Hello, Thank you for these answers. Here are the results. Le 28/02/2012 21:47, Mirosław Zalewski a écrit : try running LO like that: OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome libreoffice Works fine. I get gnome open/save dialog boxes. If you would like to force GTK everytime, try adding: export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome into your ~/.bashrc Doesn't work, even after restarting the session. or ~/.profile Doesn't work either. Maybe I didn't paste it at the right place. I've seen there was if loops. Should OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome libreoffice be pasted into the looop or at the very end of the file ? I think that variable name is quite misleading. Perhaps no one noticed it yet. Will you be able to find few minutes and file bug report about it on LO bugzilla? Or at least send message to developers mailing list (maybe it should be discussed first)? OK. I'll do when I've solved the problem, so I can give a complete report.
