I started a thread earlier about an anomaly in Libreoffice 3.5.1. I have not seen any response to it neither have I spotted the initial mail in any digest I have received so far. I'll repeat again: 1. Libreoffice is trying to recover files that do not exist. This happens at every start-up. The files in question are not corrupt. They were deleted and are no longer needed. I'd like to stop this behaviour. Any clues? I suspect Libreoffice maintains a list/record of recently failed loading attempts and continues to try entries on that list at each start-up ... if this is true, where does LibO maintain such? 2. I have just downloaded 3.5.2. I did notice something strange on a page linked from the download page (release notes under 'Handy Resources'). The release info has the following statement: This is the third release from the 3.5 branch of Libreoffice. It contains many exciting new features, and is the recommended version for private users and small enterprises. This is not informative! What changed between 3.5.1 and 3.5.2? The idea of release notes is to inform users of changes ... or perhaps that is reserved for main releases in the order 3.3, 3.4, 3.5 ...etc. If so, there should be a change-log or report somewhere. We cant keep downloading things without knowing what to expect. Regards Onyeibo not sure if it will help but you might try writing a doc and checking the .libreoffice directory to see how it changes (config files, backup, etc). Did you check the settings in the Tools/Options section? I'm using slackware 13.37 without the kde lib's and it flies. I have the qt lib installed but nothing kde. I'm using the xfe GUI. John. RE: [libreoffice-users] Re: Calc: cell protection + cut paste
It is not trivial to add finer control on how protection of cells deals with formula-changing cut-paste and other move/insert/delete operations involving cells that protected formulas depend on. For starters, there needs to be a way to communicate the enhanced conditions on protected cells via the ODF format. There is no such provision at the moment. It is possible to handle this with configuration parameters carried in ODF. Unfortunately, that is intensely implementation-specific and frowned upon for something this deep into interpretation of the format. Either way, there remains the problem of having this work in interchange among enough other products that the feature is safe to rely on outside of a situation where all users can be required to use the same software. Interoperability with use of Excel is often a significant factor for many users, especially once Excel supports OpenFormula in its handling of .ods files (something expected eventually although I have no idea when). It might be worthwhile to review what the flavors of protection are in .xlsx and in Excel 2010. There might be an avenue there to something that could be done compatibly in ODF, digging into ISO OOXML for how it is done at the format level. I'm curious to know if the finer-grain options that are available there are helpful in your use case. Can you take a look? - Dennis PS: There is still a problem with the protection lock passwords not being portably-supported between Office formats and ODF formats, although there are ways to make that work better. Presently, the protection is simply turned off when transferring in either direction between formats. -Original Message- From: miakoiv [mailto:miak...@mbnet.fi] Sent: Friday, April 13, 2012 13:36 To: users@global.libreoffice.org Subject: [libreoffice-users] Re: Calc: cell protection + cut paste -Original Message- From: Dennis E. If Western and Asian language are mixed, LibO seems to understand differences and use proper language dictionaries. But if I try to use two Western languages like English and Spanish, all Spanish words are filtered, because LibO only use English dictionary to spell check. I just found out, in Adobe Illustrator, you can highlight words and assign them to proper language setting, so that spell check will not pick them up as typo. It would be nice if LibO has a similar function. For an example, if there is an option in 'character style' setting to set languages. Then LibO will know exactly which words are in what language. How do you think? cK Yes there is. Chapter 7 of the Writer Guide contains a section on Paragraph styles. This will tell you how to assign a language for spelling to a selected paragraph. So, you can have one or more paragraphs in Spanish and some other paragraphs in English. By creating a paragraph style for English and another for Spanish and assigning them their respective paragraph styles, you can correctly spell check the entire document. If you want to mix words from different languages in a single paragraph, create the appropriate character styles for the desired language (done the same way as when creating paragraph styles for languages). By doing this, I can correctly spell check the following paragraph for three languages at once: No hablo Español. Aber Ich kann Deutch. Neat little trick, isn't it? Comment: I applied the Spanish character style to the first sentence and German to the second sentence. Since my chosen language is English (USA), the spell checker automatically checked spelling in English for anything that did not have a language character style applied to it. --Dan That's right. You can change the language in font tab. I just overlooked even though I use it everyday. The two features are completely independent from each other. There must not be any special meaning of absolute references for protected cells. As a matter of course, the spreadsheet program keeps track of the references when you move around referenced cells. There are ways to work-around this behaviour (INDIRECT, INDEX, OFFSET). [libreoffice-users] Re: Bullets in .doc/.docx documents always become ^?
Thanks to Brian Barker, using a replacement table to replace the Symbol font with the OpenSymbol font worked to make the bullet points correctly. I don't mean to be too inquisitive, but does someone know why and how this is the solution, and could OpenSymbol be made the default so that compatibility with Word documents will be improved? I'm guessing, but is it possible that the Symbol font in the generating system (wherever it comes from) has the bullets in a different place from where they are in the version of Symbol you have - but that OpenSymbol has them in the same place? Is it a Unicode issue? Remember that word processor documents (generally) carry font names, not the fonts themselves. ... and could OpenSymbol be made the default so that compatibility with Word documents will be improved? I cannot know whether that would generally be an improvement. But it's what you have arranged by this setting, of course. I trust this helps. Re: [libreoffice-users] Micro Move graphic

I have tried using the arrow keys, but they move the graphic about an inch. I have tried key combinations (ctrl-key, etc) but they don't seem to work any better than the arrow key alone. [Alt]+[arrow] should do. Alternatively -- and yet better -- use the Size and Position dialog (right-click, then Size and Position). There you can set the position to an *exact* value. Note: the reaction to the [arrow] (and combination) highly depends upon the graphics anchoring. Depending upon your needs, Character and As character are likely to be the best choices. -- Jean-Francois Nifenecker, Bordeaux -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
