Hi :)
Have you made sure there is enough empty space in the folder you are
downloading to?  Which country are you in?  Do you have a download limit/month
and have you gone over that?  Are you using a wireless connection or is there a
network cable plugged into the machine?  Have you tried rebooting your router?
Are you using Adblock Plus or some parental thing and accidentally blocked
things from this site?
Regards from
Tom :)

Hi everyone,

I've switched to digest mode and, so far, it is just what I need. I
started a thread earlier about an anomaly in Libreoffice 3.5.1. I have
not seen any response to it neither have I spotted the initial mail in
any digest I have received so far. I'll repeat again:

1. Libreoffice is trying to recover files that do not exist. This
happens at every start-up. The files in question are not corrupt. They
were deleted and are no longer needed. I'd like to stop this behaviour.
Any clues? I suspect Libreoffice maintains a list/record of recently
failed loading attempts and continues to try entries on that list at
each start-up ... if this is true, where does LibO maintain such?

2. I have just downloaded 3.5.2. I did notice something strange on a
page linked from the download page (release notes under 'Handy
Resources'). The release info has the following statement: This is
the third release from the 3.5 branch of Libreoffice.
It contains many exciting new features, and is the recommended version
for private users and small enterprises. This is not informative!
What changed between 3.5.1 and 3.5.2? The idea of release notes is to
inform users of changes ... or perhaps that is reserved for main
releases in the order 3.3, 3.4, 3.5 ...etc. If so, there should be a
change-log or report somewhere. We cant keep downloading things without
knowing what to expect.

not sure if it will help but you might try writing a doc and checking
the .libreoffice directory to see how it changes (config files, backup,
etc). Did you check the settings in the Tools/Options section?

I'm using slackware 13.37 without the kde lib's and it flies. I have the
qt lib installed but nothing kde. I'm using the xfe GUI.

Sounds like it 'should' be downloading fine.  Do you already have a 2nd

2b) connects to a local development version of the database (cached mode

/home/andreas/hsqldb_databases/Praxis/hsqldbdata/db0/ contains the 3

Right - and once the jar has been added into the system you can also
connect to a HSQLdb server running in FILE mode - meaning that the
server will not need to be started before the connection is established,
instead in the connection string you designate the file directory to be
used and as part of establishing the connection it starts an instance of
the server in your process space and uses the directory listed to store
the work files.

Since 'x' and 'X' are different characters, this has nothing to do with
formatting.
Set the field type to VARCHAR_IGNORECASE so 'x' and 'X' are considered

And the workaround is even simpler - keep using Open Office!

Howdy,

Right - well the VARCHAR_IGNORECASE is fairly specific to HSQLdb, but it
works well.

You may also create an update trigger, using an SQL command via the SQL
window, to cast all input to upper case before it is written into the
data field - for any relational database engine used by Base, including
the embedded HSQLdb engine, the syntax varies a bit from engine to
engine however.

[libreoffice-users] disappearing letter

2012-04-13 Thread Doug

I just modified a previous letter, which was a previously sent FAX,
and went to save the modified version, which had a fair amount of
work in it. When I said save I got a fast-disappearing message,
something about java, and the whole document disappeared. I
have since discovered that the document can be recovered,
altho I didn't know it at the time, so I typed it over again using
WordPerfect in Windows. I really don't like your program
much, but it's almost the only game in town on Linux, and this
behavior does not make me any fonder of it! (The other
options are worse.)

[libreoffice-users] Can one export from Calc a spreadsheet raw into a MySql database table raw?

2012-04-13 Thread Csanyi Pal
Hi,

I made in Calc a spreadsheet and now I want to export some raws into a
mysql database table's raws.

I have created already the database using command mysql to log into
mysql server and have already the table in database with corresponding
fields in table.

Can I export somehow these data from Calc into database or must I
manually fill every field in the table's records?

I can connect to this database from LibreOffice, but don't know how
could I easily tranship datas from Calc into table's fields?

I don't know if someone else can help with loading straight from calc,
but you could save as a CSV file and use the LOAD DATA command to load
into MySQL. Just check the result is as intended.

RE: [libreoffice-users] Re: Calc: cell protection + cut paste

2012-04-13 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
It is not trivial to add finer control on how protection of cells deals with
formula-changing cut-paste and other move/insert/delete operations involving
cells that protected formulas depend on. For starters, there needs to be a way
to communicate the enhanced conditions on protected cells via the ODF format.
There is no such provision at the moment.

It is possible to handle this with configuration parameters carried in ODF.
Unfortunately, that is intensely implementation-specific and frowned upon for
something this deep into interpretation of the format.

Either way, there remains the problem of having this work in interchange among
enough other products that the feature is safe to rely on outside of a
situation where all users can be required to use the same software.

Interoperability with use of Excel is often a significant factor for many
users, especially once Excel supports OpenFormula in its handling of .ods files
(something expected eventually although I have no idea when). It might be
worthwhile to review what the flavors of protection are in .xlsx and in Excel
2010. There might be an avenue there to something that could be done
compatibly in ODF, digging into ISO OOXML for how it is done at the format
level.

I'm curious to know if the finer-grain options that are available there are
helpful in your use case. Can you take a look?

 - Dennis

PS: There is still a problem with the protection lock passwords not being
portably-supported between Office formats and ODF formats, although there are
ways to make that work better. Presently, the protection is simply turned off
when transferring in either direction between formats.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Multiple language settings for spell check

If Western and Asian language are mixed, LibO seems to understand
differences and use proper language dictionaries. But if I try to use
two Western languages like English and Spanish, all Spanish words are
filtered, because LibO only use English dictionary to spell check.

I just found out, in Adobe Illustrator, you can highlight words and
assign them to proper language setting, so that spell check will not
pick them up as typo. It would be nice if LibO has a similar function.

For an example, if there is an option in 'character style' setting to
set languages. Then LibO will know exactly which words are in what language.

How do you think?

cK

  Yes there is. Chapter 7 of the Writer Guide contains a section on
Paragraph styles. This will tell you how to assign a language for
spelling to a selected paragraph. So, you can have one or more
paragraphs in Spanish and some other paragraphs in English. By creating
a paragraph style for English and another for Spanish and assigning them
their respective paragraph styles, you can correctly spell check the
entire document.
  If you want to mix words from different languages in a single
paragraph, create the appropriate character styles for the desired
language (done the same way as when creating paragraph styles for
languages). By doing this, I can correctly spell check the following
paragraph for three languages at once:
  No hablo Español. Aber Ich kann Deutch. Neat little trick, isn't
it?
  Comment: I applied the Spanish character style to the first
sentence and German to the second sentence. Since my chosen language is
English (USA), the spell checker automatically checked spelling in
English for anything that did not have a language character style
applied to it.

--Dan

That's right. You can change the language in font tab.
I just overlooked even though I use it everyday.

Ha ha! Yeah, right. Thanks.

A workaround is INDIRECT() function to avoid that cut/paste change the
references:

C1: =INDIRECT(A2)+INDIRECT(B1)

other options can be used like OFFSET() or INDEX(), and I don't know
how, maybe is easy to disable the cut option.

To avoid delete/insert rows/columns use an array formula:

An array formula in A1 like = {IV1:IV100} doesn't let delete/insert rows
in the range of the array formula, the same for columns with a column array.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Can one export from Calc a spreadsheet raw into a MySql database table raw?

Copy the cell range with or without column headers.
Select the table icon in the database window.
Paste.
Choose Append data and wether there are column headers.

DragDrop works as well.

You can also drag database table icons between database documents (which
may also be connected to a Calc document)

Yes, absolute references don't solve it.
And I really do agree that there should be a way to control how these
editing operations affect protected cells.

One of the core fuctions of a speadsheet program (in my opinion) in that
somebody skills can make a calculation sheet and other people can use it to
fill needed data and do the calculations and get the needed data.

There is no need to complicate things just because the simple rules of a
spreadsheet don't fit your current requirements.
Absolute/relative referencing has nothing to do with the protection
state. The two features are completely independent from each other.
There must not be any special meaning of absolute references for
protected cells.
As a matter of course, the spreadsheet program keeps track of the
references when you move around referenced cells. There are ways to
work-around this behaviour (INDIRECT, INDEX, OFFSET).
What you may have in mind may be more like a database form. LibreOffice
supports databases and database forms.

 Ubuntu version and installed the official OpenOffice version. Ever
 since then I've used only the official OpenOffice version before
 LibreOffice came along, and the official LibreOffice version from
 http://www.libreoffice.org/. they aren't as pretty, but
 functionality has been very good. I've been running 3.5.2 on Ubuntu
 11.10 and also 12.04 Beta 2 without any issues. And the recent
 documents function works perfectly fine in the LibreOffice version
 in Ubuntu 11.10 and 12.04 Beta 2. Here is how I do my install:
 (This is for the 64 bit version.)

 Download LibO_3.5.2_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz to the
 desktop. Right click on it and extract it to the desktop. This will
 give you the folder LibO_3.5.2rc2_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US
 Run the following terminal commands to install it: 1. sudo apt-get
 remove libreoffice*.*

It is unnecessary to remove the Ubuntu/distro version of LO. That
version *and* the standard LO version(s) reside nicely on the same
machine, and can be run simultaneously. I currenly have open
working, at the same time: LO 3.3.4, LO 3.4.6, LO 3.5.1.2, (U)LO
3.3.4, OOo 3.4.0, and OOo-Dev3:

$ locate bootstraprc
/opt/libreoffice/program/bootstraprc
/opt/libreoffice3.4/program/bootstraprc
/opt/libreoffice3.5/program/bootstraprc
/opt/ooo-dev3/program/bootstraprc
/opt/openoffice.org3/program/bootstraprc
/usr/lib/libreoffice/program/bootstraprc

The only bits you need to watch out for is where the user
configuration files are placed. In order to not have one write over
the other, I simply modify the bootsraprc file *before first run* so
that each have their own user config/profile files. Example:

For LO 3.3:
$ gksu gedit /opt/libreoffice/program/bootstraprc
and change
UserInstallation=$SYSUSERCONFIG/.libreoffice/3
to
UserInstallation=$SYSUSERCONFIG/.libreoffice3.3/3

For LO 3.4:
$ gksu gedit /opt/libreoffice3.4/program/bootstraprc

to
UserInstallation=$SYSUSERCONFIG/.libreoffice3.4/3

For LO 3.5:
$ gksu gedit /opt/libreoffice3.5/program/bootstraprc

to
UserInstallation=$SYSUSERCONFIG/libreoffice3.5/3

Create menu items to each (example:
'/opt/libreoffice3.5/program/soffice'), and that's it. The
Ubuntu/distro version will keep it's profile at ~/.libreoffice/3/user
(or ~/.config/libreoffice/3/user in the case of the 3.5 versions), the
others will name put the profile as you've intsructed in the
bootstraprc file.

Thank you NoOp. I appreciate the information. The bad experience I had
was about 2 years ago with OpenOffice. I had updated that to a new
version. Several months later Ubuntu had an upgrade, and they had the
same version of Open Office I had upgraded to. I didn't think anything
about it. When I went to use Calc, I had some of the strangest
behaviors. For any formula, it always gave the wrong answers, even for
very obvious ones, such as 2+2, or 2*25. The only way I got things
working properly again was to uninstall OpenOffice completely, then I
reinstalled the application directly from OpenOffice.

 the other, I simply modify the bootsraprc file *before first run* so
 that each have their own user config/profile files. Example:

 For LO 3.3:
 $ gksu gedit /opt/libreoffice/program/bootstraprc
 and change
 UserInstallation=$SYSUSERCONFIG/.libreoffice/3
 to
 UserInstallation=$SYSUSERCONFIG/.libreoffice3.3/3

 For LO 3.4:
 $ gksu gedit /opt/libreoffice3.4/program/bootstraprc

 to
 UserInstallation=$SYSUSERCONFIG/.libreoffice3.4/3

 For LO 3.5:
 $ gksu gedit /opt/libreoffice3.5/program/bootstraprc

 to
 UserInstallation=$SYSUSERCONFIG/libreoffice3.5/3

 Create menu items to each (example:
 '/opt/libreoffice3.5/program/soffice'), and that's it. The
 Ubuntu/distro version will keep it's profile at ~/.libreoffice/3/user
 (or ~/.config/libreoffice/3/user in the case of the 3.5 versions), the
 others will name put the profile as you've intsructed in the
 bootstraprc file.
...

 Don

Ah. That is most likely of the two sharing the same profile
(~/.openoffice.org/3/user). That is why I ensure that the standard
install profiles are different from the distro version. For OOo 3.4
(standard) my bootstraprc file is modified to:
UserInstallation=$SYSUSERCONFIG/.openoffice.org3.4/3
That kept it completely separate from the distro ~/.openoffice.org/3/.

Note: the advantage of keeping (U)OOo installed (at the time) was that
(U)OOo used the go-oo version, so it used gstreamer for multimedia. The
standard versions of OOo did not so you had to install the ancient
Java Media Format (JMF) that was a royal PITA. The advantage of
keeping all of these installed on my system is that I can easily compare
differences between versions, including putting windows of each
side-by-side.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Bullets in .doc/.docx documents always become ^?

2012-04-13 Thread avamk
This is quite strange, indeed.

I created another test document in Micro$oft Word with the Times New Roman
font (see attached bullets_test_2.docx, and the bullets showed up correctly
in LibreOffice 3.5.2. So at this point I was thinking it is just a font
issue.

However, I opened another document, a meeting agenda for teaching
assistants, that someone sent me (sample_bullets.docx). This was also using
the Times New Roman font, but the bullets appeared as ^s again!!!

Can anyone confirm this? Is there anyway to see what is different between
the bullets in these two documents?

Hi Drew,

The database is really looking polished now, and I think I have a great

out how to implement drag and drop, please let me know. I am really thankful

My schedule is kind of crazy for the next couple of weeks, but if you can
draft an explanation for how all this works, I would be more than willing to
follow it along, and help with editing it. Please let me know!

Thanks again!

I don't know if someone else can help with loading straight from calc,

MySQL and PostgreSQL migration requires using the appropriate connector.
They are found as extensions to Base. Depending on the connector you may
need to enter more or less connection information.

Since this worked, it may be helpful to others to have it articulated:
o Go to Tools | Options... | LibreOffice | Fonts.
o Tick Apply replacement table.
o Enter Symbol and OpenSymbol.

I don't mean to be too inquisitive, but does someone know why and

I'm guessing, but is it possible that the Symbol font in the
generating system (wherever it comes from) has the bullets in a
different place from where they are in the version of Symbol you have
- but that OpenSymbol has them in the same place? Is it a Unicode
issue? Remember that word processor documents (generally) carry font
names, not the fonts themselves.

I cannot know whether that would generally be an improvement. But
it's what you have arranged by this setting, of course.

I trust this helps.

[Alt]+[arrow] should do.

Alternatively -- and yet better -- use the Size and Position dialog
(right-click, then Size and Position). There you can set the position to
an *exact* value.

Note: the reaction to the [arrow] (and combination) highly depends upon
the graphics anchoring. Depending upon your needs, Character and As
character are likely to be the best choices.
