Kruno, thank you for your input. Unfortunately, that isn't really an
option. Any editor I've worked with would lose their minds having to
manage a separate document for each chapter. On top of that, considering
neither Apple Pages or MS Office has no problem with this, I'd like to
think the LO developers could resolve such an issue. A work around for a
long document with comments shouldn't be necessary.

I'm an author. I've been using LO for a very long time. However,
recently I changed editors to one who does all of her editing within
comments. Yesterday I opened the file she'd just edited, to find it
unusable. Trying to scroll through the document was painfully slow. I
saved the file to .docx format, opened in Apple Pages, and it had no
problems.

I did a bit of searching to find this a common issue with LO (documents
with hundreds or thousands of comments becoming unusable). Thing is, I
could not find a work-around. Is this going to be the deal breaker, or
is there a solution for this issue?

[libreoffice-users] Digital Signatures

Hello everyone!

So I've been trying to work out the whole digital signature mess on 
LibreOffice. I created a self-signed digital signature using gpg and 
imported it into both Firefox and Thunderbird. No matter what I do, 
LibreOffice cannot see the certificate. Is there something I'm missing 
here? Will LibreOffice not work with self-signed CAs? I've googled this 
and have yet to come up with a solution.

[libreoffice-users] odd error in 5.0 writer

Has anyone witnessed this strange happening?

I was working with the formatting of a book, using a template created by 
Createspace. This template has worked perfectly until 5.0. However, 
while working with it, I noticed text started disappearing (see attached 
image). I could remove the formatting of the text and it would 
reappear... only to immediately disappear the second I reformat. It 
seems to be randomly happening.


I can't attach the file this is happening to, because the book has yet 
to be published. I can, however, attach the blank template.


I wound up having to install the LibreOffice from the default Elementary 
OS repo (LO 4.2) which worked just fine.

 Wrong! Calibre does a great job of converting .odt to ePub without an
 intermediate conversion to HTML.

That may be the case, but formatting from HTML will render better results
when doing the conversion. This is especially true when uploading books to
Barnes  Nobel. Their meatgrinder doesn't deal well with things like
centering and such. You have to manually edit the CSS of the ebook file in
order to get objects actually centered. I've done this on a fourteen
ebooks so far.

 I fully agree. I use outline level styles all the time, and they make a
 world of difference, especially when used in headings. They make jumping
 from one heading to the next actually work on my Kindle.

Along those same lines -- when you convert in Calibre -- the ONLY thing
that matters (as far as chapters are concerned) is the style you use for
said chapter headings. I always use H3 and then make sure to catch this in
the Structure Detection section of the conversion window. With this you
can define some nice things (such as page breaks).

 want to produce a PDF ready for print, there's no other choice. I even
 use it for letters.

 Until they get redesigned to implement a proper structure markup
 style concept and correct typographic features (all line- and
 page-breaking algorithms from LaTeX are open-source), LO and OO have
 their value mostly for generating documents from databases.

I've written fourteen books and used LO for every one. Now I write 
fiction, so I my books don't tend to use complicated layouts. The 
important thing to understand is that you will need to use a tool like 
Calibre to covert the LO-generated HTML file to .mobi and .epub. With 
Calibre you can generate a TOC and the like.

[libreoffice-users] digital signatures

I'm trying to work out how to add digital signatures to LibreOffice
documents, but can not seem to see any self-signed certificate I create on
my Ubuntu system (created with either gnomint or tinyca2).

Does anyone know the trick to this process? How can I make LibreOffice
aware of my certificates?

[libreoffice-users] objects in front of movies in impress

I can't seem to get an object such as an arrow to be visible in front of

[libreoffice-users] LibreOffice Impress Crashing

Anyone having issues with LibreOffice Impress crashing?  For some reason,
Impress frequently shutdown, crashes.  I have the have to reopen it, go
through the recovery process, and wait until the next crash comes along.

[libreoffice-users] Impress PowerPoint

All,

Has anyone been able to get PowerPoint´s to display correctly in LibreOffice
Impress?  I am having a lot of trouble with .ppt and .pptx presentations, as
they simply do not display well in LibreOffice.  The background, the text,
the formatting, is all messed up and distorted.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Here are the details of my environment:

Ubuntu Linux 11.04, 64bit
LibreOffice 3.4.3, OOO340m1 (Build: 302)

the original poster. Unlike Excel, the boolean data type is just a subtype of 
the decimal type. The number format BOOLEAN displays any non-zero number as

so TRUE and FALSE are never equal to any number.

[libreoffice-users] Linked Cell says True instead of Showing the value

What should I do when a linked value says True instead of the value it is 
supposed to reference or compute? I have a vlookup function that works 
partialy, the cell it is supposed to reference says true instead of the value 
it supposed to say. The cell it is supposed to reference is linked to a number 
field form.It works partially because some other values are derived from this 
and they turn out fine, still I have True where it should have a value.

[libreoffice-users] new to list - and final showing markup question

I am a writer using LibreOffice. My new editor uses MS Word and sent me
my book back saying to enable Final Showing Markup. That feature
doesn't seem to be anywhere on the latest LibreOffice Writer. Anyone
have any insight for this issue?

Hey plino,
array formulas in LibO/OOo are a little tricky (little more so than in
Excel).  If you've entered the formula correctly and pressed ENTER (instead
of CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER), then obviously it does not work.  If you then select
the cell/formula again and press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER, then it *still* won't
work, because it doesn't register that you've changed the formula (thus
won't take the CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER).  You'll need to physically change the
formula again and then press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER (I usually type and erase a
space).

Hi plino,
for your specific case I might have a possible workaround.  The following
formula (place it in any cell) would give you the row number for the first
non-numeric value in the range A1:A3.

{= MIN(IF(ISNUMBER(A1:A3), ALL GOOD, ROW(A1:A3)))}

Do not explicitly the curly braces, they appear automatically.  It must be
entered as an array function, therefore press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER to accept the
formula, not just ENTER.

Change the 2 references (A1:A3) to the cells you want to check.  If you've
corrected the value (i.e. went to the row where the non-numeric value
appears and made it numeric) then it will refer to the next non-numeric row. 
This way you can systematically address each issue (if there aren't too
many).

It's not a solution for the problem, just a workaround.  Nevertheless, I
hope it helps.

... to get the same result as ...
= A1 ^ B1 + A2 ^ B2 + A3 ^ B3

There is no equivalent function, like SUMPOWER() or whatever (that I'm aware
of, anyway).

 Windows 7 has a similar feature, as does Compiz.
 

I can confirm that Win7 has the same behaviour.  I believe Ubuntu 11.04 also
has this (in the default installation).

Some functions you can look into:
ISNA(reference) - [is the reference #N/A ?]
ISERROR(reference) - [is the reference any of the following: #VALUE, #REF,
#NAME or #N/A ?]
ISERR(reference) - [is the reference any of the following:  #VALUE, #REF or
#NAME ?]

All of these functions return boolean results (either TRUE, or FALSE) which
you can then use in an IF() statement.  Notice that ISERROR() and ISERR()
only differ when it comes to #N/A.  Please also note that I am not 100% sure
of the definitions I gave here, this is only what I observed from use.  

As mentioned before, I think ISERROR() would work for your case.  There are
also some other IS... functions you can look at, but are not really relevant
to this topic.  Hope this helps.

I also use LO Portable, however I usually run it off my local hard drive
(long story, don't ask).  I usually find that it takes a while to start up,
but not as long as 2 minutes.  I think 20 to 30 seconds is more likely (from
cold start).

I just tested if from my flash disk (using the portableApps launcher), took
about 30 seconds, although I am using Windows 7.  Do you have all the
Windows XP service packs installed (I believe the latest is SP3)?  You can
check this by right-clicking on My Computer  Properties.

I know there have been some discussions about start-up time of LO portable,
if not in the LO portable forum then elsewhere on the PortableApps site. 
Unfortunately, I can't really remember the suggestions (except disabling

I suspect the grey shading is due to Field Shadings being activated.  To
disable it, go to View - Field Shadings (Ctrl+F8).  I am not a Japanese
user and can't test my own suggestion.  Please let us know if it works.

brackets is a formula object.

Example 1:
Euler's identity is [e^{i %pi} = -1]

Example 2:
[Euler's identity is  e^{i %pi} = -1]

It does make it a little harder to get the formatting the way you want, but
at least you can get the formula in line with text without too much hassle. 
I'm not sure how you would put bullet points in a formula though.  Maybe you
could experiment with that a little and let us know if you find a way.

I suspect it's a little more complicated conversion between ticks and
conventional time.  I ran a few simple tests, and it looks like there's more
to it than just 1 to 1 conversion.  But for my application, system ticks

[libreoffice-users] [BASIC]: Timer() function only has resolution of 1 second

Hi all,
The Timer() function in basic returns the (system?) time in seconds.  Is
there another function that has a better resolution?  I want to time how
long it takes to execute a certain function in LibreOffice Basic and I would
like to have smaller increments than 1 second.  I'm talking about something
like this:

 -= Start of code =-

dim startTime as single
dim stopTime as single

startTime = Timer()
someTimeConsumingSub()
stopTime = Timer()
MsgBox It took   stopTime - startTime   second(s) to execute the code

 -= End of code =-

Typically, this would result in something like:
It took 2 second(s) to execute the code

I would like something like:
It took 1.957 second(s) to execute the code

The reason I'm using the Timer() function is because I know in VBA it works
like the second example.  Does anyone know of a function or workaround that
I can use?
