[libreoffice-users] Problem with .odm (master document) with LO Writer 6.4.6 on Mageia-7

2020-08-22 Thread Maurice
With LO Writer 6.1 I could open a master document ~/.odm and choose
to
see the whole set of defined files updated, concatenated, and shown as 1
large document.

But with LO Writer 6.4.6 the 'Navigator' display cannot be exited to
allow
the composite document to be shown.
Instead, closing Navigator cause the whole call of LO Writer to close!

Anyone here also find this, and a way round the problem?

Using LO 4.3.6.1 Writer on Linux Mageia-4.

I've got a document within which I would like to temporarily see

Does writer have such a filter function?

(There are several 'filter' options shown in 'Help', but none seemed to

I've just started looking into Master Documents, although I have a

After studying the info I felt confident enough to try a test, but
struck a rock almost immediately:

I made a small file with just one line of text, did File/Send/Master

Master Document), entered testmaster and hit 'Save'.

Result: Error window saying Can't create document.

No hint of why not, so not sure what to try next...

OK - cracked it!

Dumped that 'Master Documents' info doc and used instead:

http://www.tutorialsforopenoffice.org/tutorial/Create_A_Master_Document.
html

from which I was able to easily:

  - Create an empty master doc.
  - Used the Navigator to insert the names of files to be joined up as
one overall doc.

Now, when I bring up the master doc., I'm invited to choose between
updating the master doc (e.g. add more file names, delete, re-order),
or request that the current content of the files listed be brought in
and concatenated as one document (which I can then do Finds on).

  Happy bunny! :-)

Many thanks for all your various suggestions. much appreciated...

Whether using Tom's suggestion of drag-'n-drop or yours to 'Insert file',
both would bee tedious when several files are often involved, but would
be
usable in the occasional general case.

The particular requirement is for a routine search through the same
set of files, with the requirement that the contents are the latest
version
in each case, so for convenience it needs to be a pre-defined list.

It may be that the Master Document facility will allow me to have a
master
document that permanently lists that set of files, and brings their
current
contents in dynamically whenever the master document is opened.
Will look further into that; I'm hoping that the contents of each file
are
not frozen at the time when they are first inserted into the master.

Thanks to all for pointing out so many options! Much appreciated...

The simplest way would presumably be to write an app that would create

Actually, many years ago I was using a word processor which (like some

Ideally I would have a master file just containing, e.g.

  %include filename-A
  %include filename-B
etc...

- which I would then give to Writer, which would then pull in the
contents of those files to produce the composite document I need.

[libreoffice-users] LO 4.0.3.3: 'Insert: Horizontal rule' is missing

2013-06-13 Thread Maurice Batey
Having installed Mageia-3 on a trial basis, I have come across an omission
in its LO 4.0.3.3 that I have been using on Mageia-2's LO 3.5.7.2, namely
'Insert: Horizontal rule'

The result is that any document prepared with 3.5.7.2 does not appear
correctly under 4.0.3.3.

I see from:

http://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/14922/why-is-horizontal-line-broken-in-401/

that the omission is a deliberate change rather than accidental (although it
seems
the Help info still thinks otherwise...).

Why on earth drop a feature that people are using?
What is the rationale?

Failing any other solution to my problem, is there any way I can copy the
3.5.7.2 'ruler' file over in to 4.0.3.3 so that the latter shows the lines
properly?

Could not see one - but there is one (53852) asking for an improvement to
the now omitted function! (Last posting there Aug.26 2012...)

For new documents I could manage without the function, but I have an
existing document using horizontal rules that no longer shows the lines
correctly, so I shall raise a bug report.

I think it is poor that such a function should just be dropped for no
apparent reason, in such an incompatible way, and with no pre-discussion

created a problem for documents that already have such lines, i.e. it
was an *incompatible* change.

Because the HP5150's tray feed pressure bar push the paper/envelopes

My HP laser printers use a center-feeding option for envelopes.

I have a 'long-envelope' file that I use fpr printing out envelopes with
my address on the left and an addressee box on the right.

Using LO 3.4.5 under Mandriva 2010.2 I insert the blank envelope on the
RIGHT-hand side of the printer (HP5150) paper feed. Works fine.

Using LO 3.5.5.3 under Mageia-2 and the same envelope file, I have to
insert the blank envelope on the LEFT-hand side of the same printer's
paper feed.

Not a problem, but can anyone suggest an explanation for the

The reason why OpenOffice is able to print the file perfectly is that

Core 16 for Linux side (modern CUPS and Gutenprint). Possibly a
Mandriva-side issue, but the single data point from Ubuntu could be even
margin defaults in drivers from older driver sets (old printer for
example).

I remember having a Epson C84 inkjet printer, and the page as driven by
a much older CUPS than 2.5.6 with Gutenprint only very limitedly linked
in had page offset in mapping (even on test page) with page offset to
left by almost an inch until I told the developer about the problem and
he and I engaged in a month-long conversation in email and the then
active linuxprinting.org (Sponsored by the then Mandrake, one of the
things that drew me to that distro to buy was their sponsored
linuxprinting.org and sponsorship of a bunch of Linux printing driver
devs) posts that ended up with the printer driver working in
CUPS-Gutenprint. I would tell him how much I had to adjust page
manually in page offsetting, and he would default that into code.

No internal offset (which during development and adjustment varied a
lot as to which way and how much) and exaggeration of size of font and
spaces and underline widths which would give a cutoff on right given
that CUPS treats everything as if it had 300 dots per inch until much
more recently with Gutenprint doing a lot of the background drivere
work for more than 1000 printers, and HPijs doing driver work for many
HP lasers. General rule, the more modern CUPS and Gutenprint are for
printing, the better more drivers are. Printer driver developers are
poor, so they tend to not afford to buy a lot of printers themselves--
the C84 was very popular in US, less so in Europe. Now that the printer
driver devs are getting more feedback faster, drivers are better faster.

He had an Epson C82 to use, donated to him, but the C84 had enough
differences that a driver had to be extremely adjusted to work with a
C84. He changed things slowly, told me when a new update was ready, and
I downloaded the updated driver set often-- I wanted to not spend
$200.00 US on a good printer to replace my C84.

The Ubuntu user might possibly benefit from this somewhat long post, so
I include it here for forwarding. Mandriva of PowerPack or 2010
varieties without CUPS and Gutenprint and driver sets updated to
current, might also have such issues.

As I said earlier, OpenOffice prints the file perfectly...

OK - as you and others have described, there *are* of course ways of
importing templates (and other user info).
It's just that one has to *know* what they are, for example by
enquiring in here.

What I actually said was:

Perhaps LO should be a little more helpful in this respect.

For example, anyone who has tried using the Google Chrome browser will
see a superb example of 'being helpful' (in this case importing Firefox
settings).

If LO doesn't feel it's important to implement an import function, it
could at least provide an 'Import Info' option that would display
the kind of techniques described in here!

[libreoffice-users] Installing LO 3.4.5

2012-01-18 Thread Maurice Batey
Within a bug report I have been asked to install try LO 3.4.5, which

[libreoffice-users] Unable to install LibreOffice 3.4.3

2011-11-05 Thread Maurice Helwig
I am unable to install LibreOffice version 3.4.3.

Below is the procedure I have taken to install 3.4.3 and the problems I have
encounted.

1. Download LibreOffice from www.libreoffice.org/download/
The file is called LibO_3.4.3_Win_x86_install_multi.exe
(this is the multilanguage installer for English)

2. When you double click the file it will expand the files in a folder
usually placed on the desktop. It is better not to change the position
of this folder.

3. At the end of the decompression, the install procedure starts with
Welcome to the guided LibreOffice 3.4 installation (words might be
slightly different, as I see the windows in Italian because I have an
Italian Windows system).

4. The next window asks to insert your name and organization.

5. The next window you can choose from Default and Customized install
 (I always choose Customized).

6. The next window allows me to choose the components: I install all
LibreOffice modules, while I choose inside Optional Components the
dictionaries and the extensions I want to install. I usually do not
install any of the Additional Languages.

7. The next window allows to set LibreOffice as the default application
for
MS Office files.

8. The next windows starts the installation procedure proper.

9. At the end, you can delete the folder on the desktop with the install
files, as they are not necessary.

Steps 1 and 2 accomplished without any problem.

Step 3 -- When I click on the .exe file I am offered a folder located on the
desktop
into which the .exe file will be expanded prior to the installation
proceeding.

I am also offered the opportunity to change that location and name of the
folder
if I want to.
This is where problems begin to happen --
~
If I change the location or folder name into which the .exe file expands --
then This is what happens --

At the end of the decompression, the install procedure starts with a very
quick
installation of
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x64 9.0.21022
and then immediately drops down to step 8 and proceeds to install
LibreOffice.

When the installation progress bar gets to the end, ie the installation is
finished,
then a window appears with the following information --

Error 1719
The window Installer service could not be
accessed. This can occur if the windows
Installer is not correctly installed. Contact
your Support personnel for assistance

The window disappears and there is no evidence of LibreOffice being
installed.
~~
If I accept the offered location into which the .exe file expands --
then This is what happens --

At the end of the decompression, the install procedure starts with a very
quick
installation of
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x64 9.0.21022
and then proceeds to step through steps 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, where I can
make all the selections I want
as described above, and the installation proceeds.

When the installation progress bar gets to the end, ie the installation is
finished,
then a window appears with the following information --

Error 1719
The window Installer service could not be
accessed. This can occur if the windows
Installer is not correctly installed. Contact
your Support personnel for assistance

The window disappears and there is no evidence of LibreOffice being
installed.
~~

I then went back and tried to install LibreOffice again, using the offered
folder location.

At the end of the decompression, the install of
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x64 9.0.21022
begins and then a window appears and tells me that LibreOffice installation
is suspended
and would I like to uninstall it.

I click yes and  Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x64 9.0.21022
is uninstalled
and then reinstalled.

Then steps 3 through 8 as before ending with the same Error message 1719 as
before.
~~
Ar this point I saw that I was going around in circles and achieving nothing
so I resorted
to a previous OS Image (I use Macrium Reflect on a monthly basis) to remove
all traces
of LibreOffice until the problems are fixed.

I have installed the Official LibreOffice Portable onto a memory stick and
it works
well, but slow, so I presume that the installer program is at fault.

I have Installed other programs on Windows 7 64bit Home premium without any
problems
so I am reluctant to suspect that the OS is at fault.

I do not know where to report this as a bug. (Two bugs in fact)

I have gone back to using OpenOffice version 3.3.0 until this problem can be
fixed.

Searching Google for error 1719 gives a lot of reading but no answers not
even from MS sites.

Can anyone help please.

  OK - thanks, Mark!

I think what I'll do is work with grammar check 'off' until the
document is complete, then switch it on for a final grammar check.

You'd have to go through all the grammar rules the checker uses to
 find the one this violates.

It doesn't bother me much that the occasional word or phrase is
marked - that's not intrusive - and I would welcome it finding it
more subtle grammatical erors.
It's the marking of all the hand-made indents that I cannot
tolerate. It makes too much of a visual mess of the document.

... it's probably an artifact of your
particular paragraph styles vs. MS Word for DOS (and all of its
descendants, opponents, etc.). Make a style that is indented (say,
Indented) and use Body or Text Body for the other and you won't
see this. If you mostly use indented paragraphs, change the Body
style to be indented and use something else (e.g. Text Body) for the
 others.

My use of Writer is for a few general 'home' letters and such - not
a plethora of large formal documents - and I only have one style.
I do not wish to get into the complication of 'a style for this and
a style for that', etc.

In that sense I have no problem with OpenOffice Writer.
It's bossy LibreOffice that is upsetting my apple cart!

Newcomers to xxxOffice will probably also wonder what the hell all
those wiggly lines are for. Why not leave grammar check 'off' by
default; then the more professional users can use it as they wish?

I don't use the grammar checker, but I imagine it has a similar way to
 toggle the Auto-check?

Seems the grammar checker can be turned off in
Tools/Options/Languages/Writing aids.

But there is some confusion in the taskbar buttons:

  ABC (with big green arrow)
A mouse hover reveals Spelling Grammar, but the action seems
to be to summarise a check of the whole document.

  ABC
A mouse hover reveals SpellChecker, but when I click on it, all
the *grammar* markings disappear from the displayed document
(hurray!), i.e. it has turned off the *grammar* check, even though the
button is labelled 'SpellChecker'

Nevertheless, I'm happy with the latter, as I can now work in peace
until the document is finished, then click on that button and find out
what errors I might have missed...

Many thanks to all for your help. Much appreciated!

did you download the language pack for en-GB? If not, you could download and
 install it.

Have now done that - thank you - and Tools/Options/Languages does
show GB language environment.

However, the spellchecker is still happy if I use US spelling or GB
spelling, e.g. if I enter:

Harbor favor neighbor harbour favour neighbour

and hit the SpellChecker button, nothing is marked, nor was any word
flagged on text entry - even though Check spelling as you write is
set.

Something awry somewhere (or am I overlooking something?).
