Re: [libreoffice-users] LO pptx-file cannot be opened in MS-Office

No idea about the cause/causes, but when I do the same type of
presentation sharing, I save my presentation as a ppt (the old
powerpoint format). No complaints from my co-workers yet. Admittedly
my presentations are very simple (text, some tables, PNG images); ppt
may not work if you need more features.

and has never been there.  Trying to simply uninstall 7.6.03 fails
exactly the same way as does hiding the Libre Office folder and
attempting a "clean" install.

How do I fix this without buying a new machine (64 bit Windows 10)?

Thank you,

PS.  Trying to install version 26.2 fails similarly

Why don't you do the obvious and remove all previous versions prior to
installing the required update?

I recommend that you re-install LibreOffice from the source

earlier days, when I thought Ubuntu was a good idea for me, I had
similar problems with printing from their variant of LibreOffice. They

My guess is that you installed LibreOffice from an Ubuntu repository,

Ok, here's a try at plain text only.   And now some words just to fill
up the space to see if it fixes the problem.

Thank you,

A simple search "replace line breaks Libre Office" should help. It
produced a multitude of useful answers via duckduckgo.

Thanks- the"/" works perfectly.

Nothing's easy in this world.

What has been created in the calc sheet is the day number of
the year which is followed by the "/".  In the cell beside the
result is the remaining number of days in the year.  Here's an
example of what I'd like to see for this date (February 10,

41 / 325

In this case 325 is the remaining
number of days in the year 2020 from the date Feb. 10.
The cell in which the formula used to
obtain the figure of 325 is-

=365-S4+1

"S4" is the cell where the day number
of the year is located returned by the formula, as mentioned
  below-

=DATEDIF($Begin_Here.$E$76,R4,"d")"
  / "

What happens to the remaining days
number in cell S4 the dreaded error-

#VALUE!   is returned.

I suspect this has something to do with
the formatting of the cell but can't figure it out.

Any ideas?

[libreoffice-users] Re: AltGr functionality + Swedish Keyboard

2019-06-18 Thread Peter Maunder
Greetings,I have attached a copy of the Swedish Keyboard that I have on my
Linux+Mint Mate system after I added Swedish to my system. The four
characters on each keyboard are the standard Lowercase and Uppercase on the
left hand side and the AltGr Lowercase and AltGr Uppercase on the right hand
side. When you use LibreOffice and other applications that follow normal
protocols those are the keys and characters you find. Note, that the AltGr
is a separate key, and not a right hand duplicate of the left Alt key. If
you are using the Alt key for your own use you should use the left hand Alt
key. However, the keyboard command on your system will allow to to change the
behaviour of the keyboard from the operating system default, but tread
carefully if you change this.

[libreoffice-users] Re: AltGr functionality

2019-06-16 Thread Peter Maunder
I suggest you check your system/keyboard settings to sort out the default
system settings. How you do this will depend on your system first not LibO
and the actual keyboard, language and brand. What operating system and
language are you using, and what keyboard setting is defined?

AltGr is controlled by your system KEYBOARD setting. Technically they are
called LEVEL 3 and LEVEL 4 (AltGr and SHIFT-ALtGr). Level 1 and 2 are
Lowercase and Shift. The settings depend on your keyboard, language and the
use of Keyboard-OPTIONS. The keyboard input is then handed over to the
application, in this case LibreOffice.

For example on my Keyboard set to English (UK) international, many of the
European accents, are set using the AltGr, for example ç é á Ç É Á and €
(the latter is dependant on the option settings).

I also have American-International, Irish, German(Switzerland) as
alternative keyboard settings to test different settings for LibO, oh and
French(French). They are controlled by the system.

[libreoffice-users] Re: LO upgrade under Linux - delete old files

2019-06-04 Thread Peter Maunder
The Linux Mint update will update the same versions. Hence 6.1.6 will update
6.1.5 or 6.1.4 etc. It will not remove 6.0.x versions. Unlike Windows that
has no version control and can only run once version of LibO. This means I,
for example, on my Mint system run versions 5.4, 6.0, 6.1 and 6.2. So I can
test problems with various versions and move users across slowly.

So the Icons are specific to the version and you can have Icons to open
Writer 6.1 and 6.0. If that is not what you want then remove previous
versions of LibO.

If you are trying to install the HTML Help from the current version on
to 6.0.7 it cannot work as the older help system cannot recognise the
file type. Any help file you're installing must be from the same release
version. It's worth checking. :-)

I assume it was a theme that was previously set which is no longer

I had not changed any OL setting when this happened and any updates

I hope highlighting the problem here should help prevent it happening in

LibreOffice uses Unicode, which supports the Nigerian Naira sign.

Unicode U+20A6 is Nigerian Naira Sign ₦

Unicode U+20B5 is Ghanaian Cedi ₵

But the font you use needs to support the sign. For example the Liberation
Sans I am using. And your operating system setup also needs to support your
use of Unicode. You do not state your operating system and language
settings. If you can find the Ghanaian Cedi, you should also have access to
the Naira.

Select "Open File" within Libre Office: in the dialogue box, in the
lower left hand corner is a clue and yes, it does function with multiple
selected files.

It's more than a bit extreme, but changing the permissions on the
reference files would work, with possible side-effects. i.e. Libre
Office would probably try to auto-save and might regularly bleat about
its inability to do so.

Not a good idea if one wanted to auto-save the "live" document, however
depress F1 and search for "auto" in Help.

Just a guess, but why not open the "reference only" documents as read
only? I imagine that LibreOffice will not auto save such documents, but
if it does I would suggest that that's a bug.

It works for me on up to date Windows 10. You haven't specified your

[libreoffice-users] Re: Non-ASCII/UTF-8 double quote characters in text format?

2018-01-24 Thread Peter Maunder
You do not say which Language or operating system or version of LibO you are
using, however in general terms I hope the explanation below helps.

LibreOffice only uses Unicode, that is to say UTF-8 in your terms. The
characters you are seeing are actually Unicode. This provides support for
about 108,000 characters. US-ASCII uses the first 127 of these. So, if you
go to INSERT > SPECIAL CHARACTERS the first (decimal) 127 or (hexadecimal)
U+7F characters are the same. The double left and right quotation marks are
down in about U+201C. The double quotation is (decimal) 34 U+22 is also
available in US-ASCII.

If your particular problem is DOUBLE QUOTATION Marks, the variation is
Country / Language dependant. But you will find assistance using the HELP >
QUOTATION MARKS. You need to turn off the AUTOCORRECT OPTION if it does not
do what you want. I quote from the HELP PANEL.

To Stop Replacing Quotation Marks
1. Choose Tools - AutoCorrect - AutoCorrect Options.
2. Click the Localised Options tab
3. Unmark the "Replace" check box(es).

[libreoffice-users] Reports Libre Base

2017-11-27 Thread Peter
I run Libre Office on Ubuntu. I store all of my financial data in a
LibreBase data base.  When this was first set up I defined a number of
reports. These worked properly until this year. Now if I run areport or
try to define one the data base crashes. While it recovers without loss
of data. I cannot get any of the reports to work. Some thing is
obviously missing of broken. Apart from reports the database works
normally.  I assume the database produces an error report when I try to
work with reporting. Where do I look for this?

Any help greatly appreciated.

If you use a table for your layout then placing an image in the
background behaves as you would wish. Sadly LibreOffice uses a
frame-based layout for labels and that might be where your problem lies.

I do not experience problems with my Avery business card stock using the
table based approach.

As a research scientist of over 28 years, I do NOT believe the problem
is with the spread sheet software but merely due to poor proof reading
of the author and (presumably papers are sent for independent review
before publication) by the independent reviewer. If this problem has
been known for 10 years then even more shame on the authors and

[libreoffice-users] Re: 5.1.1 breaks anchored-as-character frames

2016-03-03 Thread Peter Maunder
If you really want to install older versions of LibO,
https://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/4.2.8.2/ will
point you to 4.2.8, although I would not commender going back to these older
versions. The normal download site currently gives the options of 5.04,
5.0.5 and 5.1.0. Remember that all of these versions will use the same
.config/libreoffice file with Ubuntu/Mint.

Are you sure your problems are with the version of LibO and not the
installation itself or problems with the config file?...Peter

[libreoffice-users] Libre Office und IE, Webseiten

2016-02-29 Thread Peter Heinicke

Gesendet von Mail für Windows 10
Hallo

So

Danke schon mal

Gruß….Peter H.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Thunderbird potential as the official/default email-client for LO? Re: [board-discuss] BoD decision from 2015-10-05

2016-02-28 Thread Peter Maunder
Hi Tom,

We use both LibreOffice and Thunderbird running under Linux-Mint. I have
been concerned about the future of Thunderbird since the Mozilla statement
concerning the future of the software.

I am delighted that The Document Foundation is considering bringing TB under
its wing, thoroughly support this aim and have the following brief comments.

1) We should not change the name, as this will lead to confusion. I still
have problems with my users confusing LibreOffice and OpenOffice.org. Some
of them still call LibreOffice OpenOffice although they have been usingLibO
for some time.

2) Thunderbird is cross system and runs under Linux, Windows and MacOS, just
like LibO.

3) LibO supports the Mozilla Personas/Theme function, but the operational
interface of LibO leaves a great deal to be desired. Perhaps we could import
the user interface of Thunderbird Personas Plus to LibO to fix this lack. We
could thus manage the header/footer loock consistently across the products.

Anyway, I wish the project every success Peter

[libreoffice-users] Re: LibreOffice 4.4, 5.0 : firefox personas not work with path url...why?

2015-11-16 Thread Peter Maunder
I was pleased to see this interest in using Firefox and Thunderbird Personas
with LibreOffice. My wife and I use personas that I have created and stored
on our computers all the time. I don't normally download them from the
internet. There are several bug reports that may be or general interest.

85549 Personas lost upgrading from 4.3 to 4.4 . You should be aware that
the folders changed when upgrading from 4.3 to 4.4 or 5.x. Each personas is
now in a separate folder for example /gallery/personas/personas name. So
any change made for 4.3 must be upgraded for use in 4.4/5.x.

86544 Personalization: New browser for Firefox themes improvements.
Discusses some improvements.

93599 Personalization and themes. Further discussion.

I use the Firefox Personas Plus addon to test Personas created and stored on
my system before loading them onto LibO. I wish that LibreOffice had the
same function.

RE: [libreoffice-users] WordPad

2015-08-16 Thread Peter Pullman

Group:

This thank-you is to all who responded.

I'm grateful for all of the help.

This is an active group, to judge by the number of responses that my simple
(er, naïve; maybe, stupid as well) query received.

You are, also, an informative, spirited (er, maybe, contentious as well) group.

Most of you realized how little I knew about LO. I still know little, though
all of you have helped to push away, a good distance, the darkness that had
engulfed me.

First: I solved the problem of putting a WordPad document into LO so that I
could benefit from its vastly superior features. I don't know what I'd been
doing incorrectly, but I now go directly to my desktop LO icon to work on my
novel.

(By the way, at the risk of being told, again, that I don't know what I'm doing
- I don't - I found that when backing up my desktop to an external hard drive,
LO didn't copy to it as the other programs did; I had to back it up on its
own.)

On the main matter: There is no way, if I understand all of you, to have the
program save my changes without my answering Yes to the question when exiting a
document.

I'd been looking for an automatic, periodic save without exiting; while
autosave does that, it's only for the purpose of retrieving the document in
case of a malfunction. (Do I have that right? No?)

Even having the option set to saving every five minutes is of no help if I then
exit without saying Yes to a save. . . . And, as one poster put it, that's a
good thing.

It seems that hitting control+s does do the kind of 'internal' save that I
seek; I just have to remember to do it periodically. Thanks to the poster who
recommended that. (As I say, I know so little about all of this.)

To the poster who said that I was wrong, that I didn't join LO because it's not
a membership: Yes, I did. In order to take part in this forum, I had to sign up.

I'm glad that I did. Long may you all, in your various ways of using and
explaining LO, reign.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Libre Office Base

2015-07-18 Thread Peter Goggin
I have read with interest the comments about Libre Office. Over the
years I have managed large (100 Million records and small databases ( 1
million records or less) using Oracle, running in Unix machines. I have
also developed a number of small ( less than 100,000 records ) using a
variety of data base software (e. g. Paradox, Dbase, MS Access etc ).
Over the last few years, since I retired I have run Oracle on Linux.
Mysql, and now Libre Base. For my current needs I have found Libre Base
more than adequate. I use straight out of the box and use its internal
data base engine. I currently run four data bases, the largest has about
10,000 records. I have found it possible to produce the reports I need
and the data summaries etc just as easily as I could in MS Access or
even Oracle. The developers deserve congratulations on producing this
product. If I were forced to pay for MS products I would have to stop
my computing since XP is no longer supported and I cannot afford to buy
the latest windows and associated software.

Like all software Libre Base has its quirks and the documentation
probably needs improving but overall it is a very useful product. If
problems occur it is well worth reading the available documentation and
then if the solution is not obvious e-mail the list.

records, a dozen tables) it is perfectly adequate. I have now converted
all of my data ase applications for MS Access to run on Base with its
internal data base. All of them perform better than they did using MS
Access. I would not regard either Base or Access as suitable for a large
multiuser data base application. The only linux based large data base I
have developed I used MySQL with a web based front end using php to
interface to the data base.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Where is Base?

2015-03-02 Thread Peter Goggin
I have read with interest the emails on Base. I have always regarded
the data base component of Open Office, Libre office as the equivalent
to the datbase component of MS Access. I have 5 data bases, originally
run under windows and MS Access which I have converted to run under
Libre Base. I have found the LibreBase is probable slightly easier to
use than MS Access and it certainly copes very well with my data bases,
all of which are small. (The biggest has about 5000 records) The only
problem I have had is in a new database where I needed to store photos
against each record. It quickly gave up after about 4 records. I am not
certain why, but other claims on my time have prevented me for
investigating what caused the problem.

I was a database administrator for many years with extremely large data
bases (millioms of records) using Oracle, etc. When I needed to manage
a large data base (about 100,000 records, 30 to 40 users) in linux, I
used MySQL with web based front end using PHP to connect to the database.

My advice to people needing to use databases is to use Base for small
databases (less than 1 records). For larger bases consider using
Mysql with a web based front end and PHP to connect to the databse.

I've discovered, at least with my new Libre Office 4.3.5.2, that I can
open a PDF or .jpg in Writer and not have to open Draw.

No you can't! You may start in Writer, but when you open a PDF file you
should observe a switch to Draw. See the title bar to confirm.

I can also insert images (from file) into these respective documents
and then print them to a PDF, if desired, or save as .odt, MS Word,
 etc.

I would be very surprised if you are able to save as anything other than
a Draw document (.odg), or Draw template. Of course you will be able to
*print* as a PDF after editing.

Happy New Year

Over the years I have been involves in the design and implementation of

millions of records) and many users (in excess of 100). Without the
steps outlined above such systems are extremely unlikely to be
successfully developed.

By the way if your clients do require lots of special ad hoc reports SQL
provides a convenient way of developing them.

Re: [Solved] Re: [libreoffice-users] Setting Base to open with a slected form

2014-11-05 Thread Peter Goggin
The solution to getting LibreBase to open with a particular form
involves several steps:

1. Create a macro
/Sub Menu_Main( )
Dim ObjTypeWhat
Dim ObjName As String
ObjTypeWhat = com.sun.star.sdb.application.DatabaseObject.FORM
ObjName = MainMenuForm 'The name of the form you want to open at Base
start-up, this needs to exist.
If ThisDatabaseDocument.FormDocuments.hasbyname(ObjName) Then 'Check the
form exists
ThisDataBaseDocument.CurrentController.Connect() 'If the form exists
connect to the database
ThisDatabaseDocument.CurrentController.loadComponent(ObjTypeWhat,
ObjName, FALSE) 'Open the form

Else
MsgBox This is embarrassing, sorry, can't find the requested form to
open!+chr(10)+Form Name = ObjName + chr(10)+Check the details. ,
48, DS4A SBM encountered a problem!

End if
End Sub/
2. Call the macro when the data base is opened:
From the top tool bar select: Toolscustomiseopendocument
Add macro Main_menu to this selection.

When the data base is opened there is a delay of about 1 second before
the form named in the macro opens.
This isn't quite as fast as Access, but in many other areas I found
LibreBase to be more intuitive and than MS Access. I was able to convert
my data bases from Access to LibreBase with all of the functionality the
original Access databases, including reports, and in some cases with
improved functionality.

Most chapters have been reviewed (tested for technical accuracy) already

There are still a few chapters that need reviewing but it's tough work so

Some time ago I used the Microsoft SQL Server Migration Assistant for

together with SQLExpress from MS to get at the data in a MS Access db.

I just needed to get it into calc, but I would think you should be
able to access it once the data is in SQLExpress using the ADO
adapter, or in worst case you should be able to export it from
SQLExpress.

Werner

I have just converted an Access data base to LibreBase. The steps I
used are:

1.Install virtualbox with windows xp on the Linux box
2. Install MS Access on the virtual box.
3. Set up the virtualbox machine to share a linux directory on
home/username/database where username is your linux user

4. Load the MS database file into this directory.
5. From the virtualbox using Access open the database.
6. Export all of the database tables, one by one in MS Excell format. I
could not find a way to export forms or reports.

7. From your linux account start Librebase and create a new data base.
8. Using LibreCalc open each of the Excell files. Ensure the column
definitions in he spreadsheet are correct, i.e. make sure date columns
are formatted as date. I had some problems with date fiels and solved it
by formatting the date columms as -MM-DD.

9. For each spreadsheet select all and copy.
10 Go to your LibreBase and select the Tables creation area. Paste the
spreadsheet dataa into the bottom pane. Follow the prompts to create
your table. Note if you have any problems import only the table
definition first. Ensure it is correct and then import the data to
append to the table.

11 Repeat steps 8-10 for each table.

If your access data base uses views or queries you will need to extract
the SQL code and use it to import into the LibreBase.

If you do have access to a MSwidows machine the you can load LibreOffice
into it, open the MSdata base and create a new database in LibreOffice
format. The data base will contain all tables and data. It will convert
access views to tables. It will not convert forms or reports.

Either way you will have to recreate views, queries, forms and reports
in LIbreBase.

The Documentation Team needs people to help update the Base Handbook.

Two people, Hazel and Alan, have worked very hard to get the translations
done.  Now it needs;
1. Proof-readers who maybe have no idea about how to use Base, in order to
help de-geekify it.
2. People who understand Base well enough to follow through the written
instructions. This reviewing process is to make sure that the instructions
really do show exactly what normal readers would experience if they tried
to work through the guide.
3. People who are on non-Windows platforms, preferably Linux, who are able
to take screen-shots.

For 1 there are people who could help people to do the proof-reading.
Proof-reading kinda needs to be done by people who can bring a fresh
perspective, ie that weren't involved in doing the translations and wont be
involved in the reviewing. Inevitably there is some overlap though!

For 3 there is a guide to help ensure screen-shots are consistent within
the guide and consistent with other guides. It's mostly about theming but
also about resolution and sizes.

It has been a tough challenge getting this far because the last handbook
was for several branch's ago. So changes that happened in 4.0.x then had
to be modified due to more changes in the 4.1.x. The current work
consolidates on the 4.2.x branch. This should give a good solid foundation
from which it'll be easier to produce the next handbook. The Docs Team
will probably skip the 4.3.x branch and go straight to the 4.4.x when that
appears in a few months time.

Joining the Documentation Team, to work on the Guides or Handbook, involves
a registration process for the ODFAuthors website. Sometimes there is a
shortage of people able to do that for you so please bear with them if you
join. Just joining their mailing list is a good start
documentat...@global.libreoffice.org

A quick email to say hi and request a login for ODFAuthors is a good way to
start. They like to know if you have previous experience working with
documentation in other projects or elsewhere but please keep it brief, it's
just to give them a hint. Also let them know if there are specific things
you might like to be involved with or things you would like to avoid. Note
that complete noobs can be extremely valuable because we are often able to
help degeekify things.

Regards from
Tom :)

I have had a number of years experience in data base design and user
documentation, mainly on Oracle installations, but also on MS Access. I
have also been involved in programming NMC and documenting the process
of setting up programs for non computer people. I have been working with
computers since 1958 and have had to document a number of different
applications. I have also written about 30 scientific research papers.

1 All tables were successfully converted and retained their data.
2 All vies finished as being defined as tables.
3 No forms were transferred.

Is there an easy way to convert Access data bases to run under LibreBase?

Can I get the vies transferred as vies ? Do I need to extract the SQL

If I cannot transfer the forms directly then I will need to recreate
them. I have looked at how forms work in LibreBase butr I cannot find
out how to create a menu form which allows the juser to select other
menu forms or data entry forms.

Is there a reort system in Libre Base?

Further to my last post, this behaviour is not consistent. Since my

repeated the test: the table can be consistently inserted and deleted.

Presently I've no idea what's going on, but a workaround for afflicted

When I reopen the document after editing some of the draw lines and
other objects. Things have leapt to other pages.
When I attempt to select multiple objects so I can group them, when I
press the shift key and click, I end up on the image page page 6
When I select a line, the line tool bar does not appear. I have to draw
a new open line and then by selecting that I can get the line drawing
tools icons (to add and delete points etc), and I may then be able to
edit the line I wanted to edit.
Is it something special about this document, or is this a more general
 problem.

Make certain that you have enough memory for LibO and it's images, and that
you leave them in memory whilst you work on the document. TOOLS OPTIONS
MEMORY. Otherwise LibO will spend its time manipulating the drawings. Ifind
the defaults are not correct for me. As well as the anchor point, I find it
is also useful to manage the WRAP option. This has quite an effect on the
text when you are adjusting the graphics. Peter

[libreoffice-users] Re: Create Firefox Personas for LibreOffice further notes

2014-04-29 Thread Peter Maunder
krackedpress wrote
I wish there was a better way to do this.
I added a number of personas to the FF system, but LO did not [back
then] take the text color option correctly from the FF persona
settings. Yes the font color is really important for the darker
backgrounds. Also, the icons in the toolbars might have problems with
darker backgrounds, or at least it did when I created them when LO first
 started to use personas.

It would be nice to have a persona editor built in to the
personalization option[s] so you can choose the background image[s] and
the font color within LO and not have to do the hard coding in the
 setup file[s].

The Font Colour option is currently broken when displaying the STARTUP
CENTER screen. This is fixed in 4.3. However you can bypass this problem by
reloading the Personas.

I have found that defaulting the Font Colour to RED #ff gives a more
flexible look that suits more Personas than plain BLACK #00. In that
case you can reload a Personas stored on you own system without the need to
restart LibO. Simply use a default header name, in my case Header.jpg for
the Personas, overwrite or rename the exisiting Personas in the folder and
do the following

Remove the Personas TOOLS OPTIONS PERSONALIZATION Plain Look OK
Reload the Personas TOOLS OPTIONS PERSONALIZATION Own Theme OK

You can use an image editor such as GIMP to create the Personas, save it
into the /Gallery/Personas folder and you have a basic in-house Personas
management system. Works for me..Peter

[libreoffice-users] Re: Create Firefox Personas for LibreOffice further notes

2014-04-26 Thread Peter Maunder
My original response was just to show where the Personas were actually kept
on the LibreOffice system. These notes may be of interest for those who wish
to dabble further.

Adding Personas to LibreOffice does seem slightly convoluted, especially
compared with Firefox and Thunderbird. Don't forget that F and T are
designed to be online and provide an online repository for the images.
Originally you needed to download each image to update the Personas, only
one image was stored on your system using a common name. This was obviously
not ideal for private Personas either for private personal or business use.

The F/T PERSONAS PLUS Add-On provides a facility to manage Personas,
together with their Text Colours directly on your machine. This function is
called CUSTOM PERSONA. I actually use this function to test Personas using
Firefox and only add them to LibreOffice when they are ready to go.

One of this year's LibreOffice Google Summer of Code projects is to “Improve
Usability of Personas” which Rachit Gupta is carrying out. I, for one look
forward to what he produces. Personas Plus is an obvious starting point.

Oh, another wrinkle. It is only when you add the first Personas using
LibreOffice that the Personas folder “/Gallery/Personas” and the entry in
the registrymodifications.xcu file are created.

Changing the text colour may seem like an unnecessary luxury. However, the
default of black does not show up well on a dark image. Hope this helps..
Peter

[libreoffice-users] Re: Create Firefox Personas for LibreOffice 4 in LibreOffice 4

2014-04-25 Thread Peter Maunder
The Personas used by LibreOffice is stored in the User/Gallery/Personas
folder. The access information is stored in the
User/registrymodifications.xcu file. The settings are in the
PersonasSettings. An example is given below.

 item oor:path=/org.openoffice.Office.Common/Miscprop
oor:name=PersonaSettings
oor:op=fusevalueHeader.jpg;Footer.jpg;#ff;#f5f5f5/value/prop/item

Where the header and footer are .jpg or .png format. The text colour is
#rrbbgg format and the accent the same. Where #00 is black and #ff
is white. The Firefox footer and accent are not currently used in LibO.

By careful copying and renaming, you can change the LibO personas without
needing the Firefox website.

Be careful when modifying the registrymodifications.xcu file. Always take a
backup before making any changes. Peter

Re: [libreoffice-users] HOW CAN I CONVERT A NUMBER IN LibreOffice CALC TO TEXT IN LibreOffice CALC?

2014-02-22 Thread Peter West
Here we go again.

There is top-posting, which is, in general, a good thing, and is preferred by
most email users, including the technically inclined, like myself. Its primary
advantage is that it is a great courtesy to the readers of email threads, who
can quickly assess a contribution to the thread for relevance to them. A
secondary advantage for the poster is that it increases the likelihood that the
new material will actually be read, or at least skimmed.

There is in-line posting, which is necessary when you need to reply to specific
points in a previous post. You can put your comments into the immediate context
to which they apply. This is also a good thing, if the circumstances require it.

Then there is bottom-posting. It's a kind of virus that contaminates,
primarily, open-source mailing lists. When a poster is infected he (yes,
overwhelmingly, he) is overcome with the urge to tell people what to do. He is
filled with a (completely spurious) sense of righteousness. He is a rebel, he
is liberated, he carries the banner of freedom (free as in speech) against the
grinding capitalist forces of oppression and regimentation. Therefore, you MUST
DO AS YOU ARE TOLD. And so the champions of freedom become tuppenny Trotskys,
low-rent Lenins, and we can say a quiet prayer of thanks that their influence
extends no farther than the occasional mailing-list.

How do I know? I've been there. I am now afflicted by a complementary virus. I
am equally righteous and insufferable. I know, I know. But my desire is to see
all of this nonsense fade away into an easy-going environment of live and let
live. Bakunin before Lenin, and classical small-l liberalism before either.

It is called bottom or in-line posting, and is preferred by the more
 technically inclined.

It is primarily Outlook users who prefer blind top-posting (ie, quoting the
entire message they are replying to and adding their comment at the top).

Most people who are rabidly anti bottom/inline posting will go out of their
way to complain about how bad bottom posting is, and will invariably use
BLIND bottom posting - quoting the ENTIRE message ABOVE your comment, which
is admittedly way WORSE than blind top-posting - as examples of why
bottom/inline posting is bad. They almost always simply refuse to even
acknowledge the difference between BLIND bottom posting, and inline posting
(quoting only the relevant portion, and putting your responses/comments AFTER
the relevant quoted text, which is much cleaner and easier to read than even
top-posting, mainly because you can clearly see the full context).

Hi Frank,

This script works on OS X, to the extent that does the conversions and
creates new filtered odt files. The only questions are whether it works
in Linux, and whether the filter does the right thing with the index
markers.

I haven't created any files with such index-markers, so maybe you can
run it against your files to see how it goes.

It's a shell script, using soffice and perl.

BUT: my sed command only removed the markers from the fodt. As I mentioned I
was unable to convert the odt to an fodt (essentially uncompressing the odt
to readable xml) using the unzip capability of my OS (as I'm pretty sure
could be done with earlier open office documents).

Since LO can easily write and read fodt files, though, it really wasn't
necessary to do any file format conversion, and I didn't bother spending the
time to figure out how to do everything in one shot.

the XML tag - otherwise it seems to work fine.

The full blown shell script you sent me (I don't see it here on the forum
for some reason) needs to be modified in the same way of course.

I used [A-Za-z] instead of the [:alpha:] that you used because some systems
don't respect that substitution syntax (I can't remember what it's called),
which limits things just a bit, but a comment might be added to take care of
that - the [:alpha:] syntax, again, is probably a little easier to
understand for those not familiar with grep, sed and their relatives.

You should post the shell script, as it is probably easier to use (?) for
some folks than my simple sed command, since it takes care of hand-holding,
locating the right directories and so forth.

Of course, I hope some of the LibreOffice developers will incorporate the
option and capability to remove old markers when an index is regenerated,
and fix the generator so that it doesn't add additional markers to the
same word when updating takes place. (It doesn't always do that, but I
haven't figured out the exact conditions when it does).

So - good work.
