[libreoffice-users] Re: pptx files can't be opened when created with Impress 5.0.x

2015-11-23 Thread avamk
Thanks for the link.

Unfortunately looks like the Kernel for PowerPoint Recovery tool is
not free (as in freedom) software, which is antiethical to
LibreOffice. Also, I think it is crucial that LibreOffice's export to
PowerPoint (.ppt or .pptx) function is as bug free as possible to
begin with.

[libreoffice-users] pptx files can't be opened when created with Impress 5.0.x

2015-10-11 Thread avamk
Hello,

I've noticed that .pptx files (I selected the Microsoft PowerPoint
2007-2013 XML format) I created and saved with LibreOffice Impress 5.0.x (I
tried both 5.0.2 the version before it) do not open correctly in Microsoft
Office 2010. When opening, PowerPoint tells me that the file is corrupted,
and clicking the Repair button either fails or results in a file with many
elements missing or messed up. This happens for LibreOffice Impress created
.pptx files from Linux, Mac, and Windows versions of LibreOffice.

I can provide more detail or an example file, but I just wanted to ask first
if this is a known problem and is being fixed??? This is a big show stopping
bug for me Thanks for your help!

Good idea, I should really start using different signatures for
different things. I'll probably need a "signature" manager just like a
password manager to help me keep track of all those signatures!

[libreoffice-users] Strategies for securing a document with an embedded picture of signature

2015-09-10 Thread avamk
Hello,

I think this is a rather outdated procedure, but I've come across cases
where I am required to include a scanned image of my handwritten signature
in a word processing document to "sign" it. Just to be clear, I am not
talking about signing with a certificate, but rather an image of a
handwritten signature inserted into the document.

I am always scared of doing this, because what if an adversarial entity gets
ahold of the document and starts using my signature for nefarious
purposes??? So, is there a way to make this document (say, a .odt or .docx
file) more secure that problem won't happen? Ideally I'd like to minimise
complications/troubles when the receiver opens the file.

Thank you!

That's true!! I guess it doesn't really matter how I try to secure the
document if the receiver will see it on their screen, oh well. Thank
you for the reminder!

Encryption is helpful though to ensure that at least only my intended

[libreoffice-users] Align objects at end of motion path in Impress?

2015-06-24 Thread avamk
Hello,

I've been experimenting with using motion path animations for objects in
LibreOffice Impress 4.4.3.2. Coming from Apple Keynote (which is also
capable of advanced motion path animations), I can't find a way to preview
an object at the *end* of its motion path. Without seeing exactly where my
object will end up, it is very hard for me to align it relative to other
objects at the endpoint. Is there anyway to work around this? Thank you.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Repository with LibreOffice 4.4 for Fedora 21+?

2015-02-05 Thread avamk
OK, I followed everyone's tips and was able to replace the Fedora
repository-installed LibreOffice 4.3 with 4.4 installed from the RPMs
downloaded from the LibreOffice site!!

Sorry I've never tinkered with YUM configuration before, how to I
modify it to ignore LibreOffice updates?

Another strange thing is that when (and only when) I enable Use
OpenGL for all rendering in options, (1) all vertical scroll bars
become upside down (i.e. the bar moves up from the bottom when I
scroll down), (2) all checks in checkboxes are upside down, and (3)
when I resize a window the expanded area is all dark! Has this
happened to anyone else??

Thanks for your replies!

 Is it installed?

yum list installed | grep libreoffice

I expect that you can remove it using

 yum remove libreoffice*

I have always used yum localinstall *.rpm to install the RPMs after I
 extract the code.

Last time I did this, there was a GUI integration driectory under the
standard RPM directory. I changed to that directory  and installed the
RPM meant for UI integration for gnome. I don't remember what that is
called off hand, or even if it is still required. I don't have time now
to download and check the RPMs, but, if you send a list of RPMs, I can
tell you which one it is.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Extensions disappear with LO update

2012-06-28 Thread avamk
Since I am running Mac OS X 10.6.8, I suppose I can use its Time Machine
feature to restore my past LibreOffice profile.

However, I do think it would be nice for LibreOffice to address migrating to
new versions in a more user friendly way. Perhaps something like the
automatic check that happens when Mozilla Firefox or Thunderbird get
updated. The feature will test all addons to make sure they work, and if
not, offers to try to update them for you.

Making backups is always important, but, again, I propose some enhancements
could be made to the LibreOffice upgrade process so that the user experience
can be less abrupt/surprising than extensions disappearing without
warning.

Thanks for your answers!

[libreoffice-users] Maintaining Calc spreadsheet w/ multiple headers/subheaders

2012-05-24 Thread avamk
Hello,

Here is a scenario that I am trying to deal with in a Calc spreadsheet:

(1) Every year Bill and Nancy measure the weights and heights of four
people.

(2) The four people being measured are Fred, Joe, Alice, and Beatrice.

Right now the measurements for two years, 2008 and 2009, have been entered
into this spreadsheet:

screenshot (https://imgur.com/xCy0y)

ODS file (https://min.us/muyVAlDHC)

As you can see, right now this information is organised in the spreadsheet
by multiple subheadings. The problem is that I am having a hard time getting
Calc to filter and sort this information. For example, I don't know how to
ask Calc to sort the rows by the height measured by Bill in 2009. The sort
function in the data menu seems to expect that there is only one heading,
and not multiple layers of headings arranged in rows.

Another issue is that this spreadsheet might become unwieldy when more
measurers (in addition to Bill and Nancy) start in, say, 2012, or when more
subjects are added after the first four.

I realise Calc can maintain multiple sheets in a file, and it also has some
basic database capabilities. Can anyone provide recommendations on how to
enhance my current sheet so that it is scalable and more easilty queried?

[libreoffice-users] Re: Can't find Commands window in LO Math

2012-04-29 Thread avamk
Hello,

Thank you for your quick responses.

I already tried to add a formula by clicking Insert - Object - Formula in
Writer, and I got the problem described in my original post. Here is a
screenshot of what I see in a Writer document after I do Insert - Object -
Formula:

http://imgur.com/HevWr

On the side there is also the Elements window, but there is NO Commands
window, nor any space for me to enter the markup. I also tried to look for
the small dotted area indicating a hidden window, but can't find it...

If I try to enter A =left[matrix{1 # 2 # 3 ## 4 # 5 # 6 ## 7 # 8 # 9}right]
directly into the formula box in the document, I get this:

http://imgur.com/ZBIns

I also already downloaded the LO Math guide, but it doesn't help. The
screenshot in the guide shows the LO Writer window split in half, where
the bottom half is for entering the markup. But again, as you can see in my
posted screenshots, there is no such place.

I am very confused, can you point me further in the right direction?

Thanks!

However, as you mentioned the LO Writer guide itself uses almost all custom
styles not in the Default set.

I guess I will start by reading through the LO Writer guide's sections on
styles, thank you for pointing me in that direction!

Just out of curiosity, if I set up my styles in Writer, and save a document
as a *.docx file, then open it in Micro$oft Office, will the styles work
correctly?

Thanks again!

[libreoffice-users] Re: Can't find Commands window in LO Math

2012-04-29 Thread avamk
I went to the bug report for
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46071 bug 46071 , and indeed
that was my problem.

The https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46071#c3 third comment by
Andy gave a macro that fixes this issue. In LibreOffice Writer, I clicked
on Tools - Macros - Organise Macros - LibreOffice Basic... In the
LibreOffice Basic Macros window, I added a New macro, then replaced the
default code that appears with the following:

Sub RemoveMathEquationWindowSettings
  p = CreateUnoStruct(com.sun.star.beans.PropertyValue)
  p.Name = nodepath
  p.Value = /org.openoffice.Office.Views/Windows
  cp =
CreateUnoService(com.sun.star.configuration.ConfigurationProvider)
  ca = cp.createInstanceWithArguments(_
com.sun.star.configuration.ConfigurationUpdateAccess, Array(p))
  name = 30378
  If ca.hasByName(name) Then
ca.removeByName(name)
ca.commitChanges()
  End If
End Sub

Then I clicked on the button labeled Runs the first macro of the current
module to run the code, and the problem was fixed. Now I can see the
Commands window, and was able to enter the example matrix suggested by
Pedro.

Many thanks to Regina for pointing me to the bug report, Andy for posting
the macro, and Pedro for the example matrix! Hopefully this will be helpful
to others with this problem, and that the bug will be fixed soon.

[libreoffice-users] Starting a set of styles from scratch in LO Writer?

2012-04-28 Thread avamk
Hello,

I would love to fully utilise templates in my Writer documents, but am still
confused about its organisation.

When I open the Styles and Formatting window, it shows all styles under the
Default category. I can make changes to, and add new entries under
Default. However, I do not like organising my styles this way, because I
can't delete the stock styles in it.

Is there a way to start my own set of styles from scratch, independent from
the Default group? Once I created my styles, how do I save them into a file
so as to use in other documents?

Thanks!

[libreoffice-users] Can't find Commands window in LO Math

2012-04-28 Thread avamk
Hello,

I am trying to follow the instructions
http://help.libreoffice.org/Math/Matrix here to add a matrix to my
LibreOffice Writer document. However, I can't find the Commands window the
instructions refer to.

The official Math Guide states that I should enter the formulae markup into
the equation editor, but this doesn't not appear in my LibreOffice Writer
or Math 3.5.2 in Mac OS X 10.6.8. If I try to add markup into the equation,
it does not get interpreted and is taken literally as text in the equation.

Can someone point me in the right direction? Again I am trying to insert a 3
x 3 matrix into my Writer document.

Thanks!

This is quite strange, indeed.

I created another test document in Micro$oft Word with the Times New Roman
font (see attached bullets_test_2.docx, and the bullets showed up correctly
in LibreOffice 3.5.2. So at this point I was thinking it is just a font
issue.

However, I opened another document, a meeting agenda for teaching
assistants, that someone sent me (sample_bullets.docx). This was also using
the Times New Roman font, but the bullets appeared as ^s again!!!

Can anyone confirm this? Is there anyway to see what is different between
the bullets in these two documents?

[libreoffice-users] Consistently poor Impress performance in Mac OS X

2012-04-11 Thread avamk
Hello,

This is a question I asked in ask.libreoffice.org, but did not get a useful
reply:

I've got the latest Impress running on my MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.6.8.
(but this problem existed in previous versions, too)

For the past few months I tried really really hard to make all my
presentations with Impress. The big problem is that it's performance is the
exact opposite of snappy. (what is a good antonym for snappy?)

After adding images (they are each just 500-800kb JPGs) to, say, 20 slides,
Impress grinds almost to a halt. Things respond 1-2 seconds after the mouse
click.

This is especially frustrating when clicking, holding, the dragging, because
there is always a 1-2 second lag between each step. For instance, if I click
and drag the corner of an image to resize it, the motion is not smooth, but
rather occurs in jumps. Another instance would be when I click on a slide
to select/show it in the main window. If I move the mouse cursor away after
clicking on a slide, the lag makes Impress think I am dragging and
re-ordering the slide! And of course there is a few seconds delay here as
well.

So my question is: What's wrong that's making Impress perform so poorly?? My
Mac has a Intel Core i7 2.66 gHz CPU, advanced Nvidia GT 330M graphics, and
8.0 GB of memory, it should be overkill for something like this! I tried
tweaking the number of objects kept in memory, size of objects, etc. to no
avail.

Is it just because Impress has poor performance? (in which case I think it
really need to be improved) Or am I doing something wrong??? M$ PowerPoint
and Apple Keynote works beautifully and snappily, but I wish I could use
Impress!

Thanks!

[libreoffice-users] Re: Consistently poor Impress performance in Mac OS X

2012-04-11 Thread avamk
Hello,

Thanks for your quick replies!

I really don't think my pictures are too big at all! I've made slideshows
with Apple Keynote or Micro$oft Powerpoint with almost a hundred slides,
that were very multimedia heavy (including videos, high resolution images in
MBs each, etc.), and they run *flawlessly* with transitions, etc.

I also tried installing LibreOffice on other Macs, and get the same problem.
In all cases they grind to a halt as soon as I begin adding things other
than pure text/bullet points to the slides...

Sounds like this is an issue specific to LibreOffice Impress running on the
Mac??? Am I the only person experiencing these performance issues? But if
so, why did the other Macs I tried this on also have the problem?

I think LibreOffice should be built so that it can handle multimedia rich
presentations in Impress!

I would really like to find a solution to this, but otherwise I guess I need
to stick with Apple Keynote for the foreseeable future... :(

Does this mean if I setup HSQL 2.2.8 per your instructions in the original

OK, I will try 1. and 2.. In fact, I realised only now that I can also test a
couple of my multimedia intensive Impress files on my Linux and Windows
virtual machines. If the problem really is Mac specific, then performance
should improve, even in a virtual machine. This possible workaround will
help narrow down this performance bug(s), but is probably too cumbersome for
day to day use.

As for joining the Devs Team, I only wish I could code! Is there a place to

[libreoffice-users] Make a form that allows user to drag and drop in an image

2012-04-06 Thread avamk
Hello

Thanks to the great instructions
http://sheepdogguides.com/fdb/fdb1imagbp.htm here , I learned how to link a
VARCHAR field to images in my filesystem, and display them in a form.

However, when I add new entries, I have to manually type in the relative
path of an image into that field. This is cumbersome when I need to add lots
of entries, e.g. making a catalouge of things with images for each.

Therefore, is it possible to create a form so that when adding a new entry,
there is a box in the form where the user can just drag and drop in the
desired image, and the appropriate relative path to the image will be added
to the field???

Thank you very much!

[libreoffice-users] Re: Make a form that allows user to drag and drop in an image

2012-04-06 Thread avamk
I am actually quite new to Base, and didn't realise I could use the File
Picker control. When I try to change its reaction to the Mouse Pressed
event, it asked me for a macro.

Do I need to write a macro to get the relative path of my desired image??? I
actually have no macro coding skills to do that...

And how do I tie the selected file's relative path to the field I desire?

Sorry I am so new to this, but I would really appreciate any guidance you
can give me...
