[libreoffice-users] Configuring LO

2020-08-28 Thread Malcolm Moore
One of the things I hate about LO is by default it looks awful ( my opinion )
How can I configure it ( on Linux and Windows ) so that all users get the same
appearance
without them having to do anything but then can over ride it if they think
my taste sucks ;-)

If there is a guide someone can point me to I would appreciate it

[libreoffice-users] How to prevent Impress from changing font size?

2019-05-26 Thread Malcolm Jaros
Using Impress Version: 6.0.7.3 in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, when I add to text in a
slide the font size automatically reduces to keep the text within the text box.
Can I prevent this auto resizing of the font?
If so, how do I do this?

I am using "Version: 6.1.5.2 (x64)". Supposedly, you can force font
substitution. I have not tried it.

Choose *Tools - Options'* /- LibreOffice - Fonts'   From:
https://help.libreoffice.org/Common/Fonts/

You must click in the box next to "Apply replacement table" before you
can select the substitute fonts.

Hope this helps.

It occurs to me that Draw does not recognise, or does not have, the font used
for the original document and substitutes one that it does have.
My problem is that the original, serif, font is being substituted by a

Just a thought. Ubuntu 18.10 is a new distro and less thoroughly tested than
the LTS version 18.04.
If you do not get this problem in 18.04 perhaps you should stay with that for a

I had a problem similar to this on windows 98, after I installed a legal
copy of word perfect and all 1100 fonts it came with. Apparently windows
98 had a limit of about 500 fonts ... and above that it would get confused
after a while.

However, more recently I used Ubuntu studio 12, which ships with about
1200 fonts, and ported those to wasta 14 and 16 en mass. I had no issues.
I haven't ported this many to wasta 18 yet.

On Sun, Nov 25, 2018, 4:45 PM James It is not a format problem because sometimes it works.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Two formulas in one cell?

2018-06-02 Thread Malcolm Jaros
That is an impressive solution from Michael but, not knowing the layout of your
spreadsheet, I wonder why you cannot simply insert a new column adjacent to the
cell in question so that each formula can be in a separate cell.

Would be nice if you could put actually wanting with examples.

You can get the formating you need using the text command, and you can
see the diffiernt format option using the cell format, and it shows examples of
the format code. Just picked a longer one for the date format. Then just a

regular number format used for the second.

Concatenate works...to a point.

Another problem is that first formula must provide a result formatted as
a date, let's say June 2.The second formula must provide a result as a
day-number-of-the-year (which I haven't figured out how to do yet).
Using concatenate the result is a 5 digit number returned for the first
formula even though the cell is formatted as a D.

How can these format requirements be maintained?

Thanks,

Carl

The answer to this question is very similar to that for the almost
identical question that you asked (and had answered) last November 21st:
http://document-foundation-mail-archive.969070.n3.nabble.com/Formula-and-text-in-same-cell-td4227487.html
.

If a cell contains a formula, the result of that formula is what
appears in the cell, so having two formulae would be simply
contradicting yourself. As you already know, if you wanted F30-2 you
would not expect to use =F30 and then =-2 separately but instead
=F30-2. In the same way, you must construct a single formula that
creates the combination of values that you ask for. You can combine
results using the CONCATENATE() function or, more simply, the
operator.Try:
=F30-260;A10+4

Incidentally, do please put your name in the real name field of your
mail messages: it's an elementary courtesy to those offering to help you.

I trust this helps.

[libreoffice-users] Why is LibreOffice so susceptible to config errors

2017-05-08 Thread malcolm moore

Why is LibreOffice so susceptible to config errors. We have about 3 or 4
students a day

coming to us because LibreOffice won't start. Deleting ~/.config/libreoffice
always does

the trick but it's an enormous pain.

Is there anything I can do, bear in mind these are students so they will just
log out

or turn the machine off with LibreOffice running no matter what I say !

Each machine is used by up to a dozen students each day. Which when you multiply

500 machines by 1300 students, 3 or 4 hangs a day doesn't seem that much but
it's

what people remember about LO

[libreoffice-users] Making LO look nice

2016-04-15 Thread Malcolm Moore
I have installed LO5.1.2 on openSUSE Leap ( Plasma)  and the only way I can
get it to look nice is to set my widget type to GTK+ Any thing else and the
icons in the 'View' menu look terrible ( Most are light blue and seem to be
some sort of default icon )

If I use the KDE4 extensions LO doesn't seem to follow most of the icon themes
and looks terrible in everything except when I use GTK+
If I use the Gnome extensions Adwaita looks pretty nice but the 'on off' icons
( like
'view/status bar ' ) don't change
If I have neither it looks like it was written in the 1980's !!

Can someone suggest some combination that looks beautiful !  :-)

[libreoffice-users] Question on bugs

2016-01-25 Thread Malcolm Moore

This has always puzzled me :-

Why does LO list bugs by 'earliest version affected' ?
If you look at the bug list for 5.1 for example, it shows
119 bugs.  There are a number of bugs that 5.1 has
that don't show on the list as they are recorded as affecting
earlier versions. Why would anyone working on 5.1 look
for a bug that is down as affecting 4.1 or something.
An issue that came up the other day in both 5.0.4 and 5.1RC2
is actually first recorded as affecting 4.4.0 which by their
roadmap went end of life in the middle of last year.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Base out of memory

The error comes up before you have really had a chance to enter any data
If you enter the first row and then start entering data in the second row the
error pops as soon as the cursor goes to the first field in the second row.

Hi :)
I am not sure about the SQL error code and haven't even looked it up
yet.  However it does sound like a quite small database that shouldn't
be having any trouble with memory.

As a quick first try maybe radically increasing the default settings
in LibreOffice might help.
Tools - Options - Memory
The defaults are all for MUCH lower spec machines so you can easily
allow LibreOffice to use much larger amounts of Ram.  Hmm, all the
settings seem to be about graphics and objects so i'm not sure it
would help.  I think it's still worth a try though.

Regards from
Tom :)

Hi,

Yes the printer does A3 and borderless

Creating an A3 presentation ( Format page / Page )
will not print as A3 it always comes out as A4.
Using 'Use only paper tray from printer preferences'
means it prints landscape but it is still on A4

An A3 Writer document prints as expected

What paper size is your printer able to print on? Has hit got A3? Can it
print A4 borderless?

For to enable the printer settings you need to check the options "Use
only paper tray from printer preferences" and "Use only size form
printer preferences" in the tab "Options".

Kind regards

Re: [libreoffice-users] Printing in Impress

2015-10-09 Thread Malcolm Moore

Eventually the penny dropped, sorry for being thick !
This is outstandingly horrible !

My summary for anyone in the same boat suffering from brain failure at the end
of the week:

You have to go to 'Tools/Options/LibreOffice Impress/Print
Make sure Paper tray from printer settings is unchecked

Then 'File/Print' ( at this point the Print/Properties are wrong and greyed out
)
Then 'Options' and check 'Use only paper tray from printer preferences' and
'Use only paper size from printer preferences'
Then go back to 'General' select the printer and go to 'Properties' ( If you
don't do this now it forgets the previous step )
The paper size and orientation are now available to change
Then OK

It will then work for the duration of the session as A3 and Landscape are now
selected ( but greyed out again )
Once you save it and open it again you have to start from the beginning.

As Regina said, you also need to set 'use only paper /size/ from...' as
well. Otherwise I see the same symptom (landscape, and size locked to A4).

BTW, Impress seems to pick its size differently from Draw, which chooses
a more useful default of A3 for an A3 drawing.

Haven't we only just been here? :-) :-) :-)  I suggest again that the
Print dialogue could use some improvement in this area.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Printing in Impress

2015-10-09 Thread Malcolm Moore
I stand corrected :-) but the fun continues...

If you set it up, save it and reopen it, you are correct
it does save the printer settings but then select
another identical printer from your list of printers it goes
back to A4 for that printer . If then you go 'oops, my mistake'
and go back to the original printer that has gone back to A4
again. At that point if you cancel out and do file print again
on the original printer it's back to A3.

Are there bugs posted for this - this seems almost designed
to be a monumental pain in the behind ?

Best wishes

Mal

Not correct AFAICS. Unfortunately, changing print properties doesn't
seem to mark the file as needs-to-be-saved, so ^S does nothing (and
File|Save is greyed out). However, if the print stuff is set up, and
then a substantive change is made followed by a save, the print info is
saved as well. But if you need to change it again, you have to go
through the whole procedure again.

At least it seems that way after a quick experiment.

[libreoffice-users] Printing in Impress

2015-10-08 Thread Malcolm Moore
If I create a presentation in Impress and set the
page size to A3 landscape, how do I print it ?

It always comes out  ( partly on ) A4 and the
dropdown to change the paper size in the print
dialog is greyed out at A4

In the end I PDF'ed it and printed it out that way
but that's less than elegant !

Word count updates automatically whatever - if you highlight the text on
a single page, the word count at the bottom of the window shows number
of words on that page

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Impress doesn't print in colour

2014-04-01 Thread Malcolm Moore
I have solved this one... but to make the story more interestinghere is the
series of event and I swear it isn't an April fools joke.
LO printing to a Ricoh MPC5502 - I discovered that it's not justImpress and
that any LO application had this problem it's just thatin Impress you tend to
print larger.
Printing in colour up to 36 points works fine. When you print at 40 pointsthe
lower case letter are colour but all the capital letters come out as greyscale.
So, OK, I thought I'll fiddle with the settings so I changed the resolution to
1200 dpi. Now all the capitals come out in colour but the lower case are in
greyscale.
Over 40 point it all comes out as greyscale
After thinking I was going mad, the answer is that the PXL driver is thecause
and the PS one works perfectly.
Cool problem eh

LO connects to CUPS on start not when you want to print So if you
have LO open for a while the connection to CUPS    will time out. You need
to set your CUPS timeout short enough    so that it will time out
eventually but long enough so that    CUPS doesn't drop the connection in
normal use.

Uninstall either hunspell-XX (or myspell-XX) package, or hunspell

Why do you want them to be removed?
That is the real question.

If it is a Linux system package, then I would use the Synaptic Package

You probably want to use a frame instead of a table. On the Type tab
of the Frame dialogue, remove the tick from AutoSize: then the frame
will - as you wish - not expand to accommodate its contents. If
necessary, you can create your one-cell table inside the frame, but
I'm not sure why you would need to do this.

 I trust this helps.

Yes, but I already have a document that I inherited with tables not frames

2013-05-10 Thread Malcolm Moore
Somehow I have changed my printer settings to use the bypass tray and
for the life of me I can't work out how to get it to go back to auto

I tried setting it in spadmin but the LO apps ignore it
I tried removed ~/.config/libreoffice and that doesn't work

???

BTW LO 4.0.3 on openSuse 12.3

Re: [libreoffice-users] Printer settings

2013-05-10 Thread Malcolm Moore
I don't understand ...It's late Friday so I'm probably being thick !

The default setting on the CUPS server is 'Auto' paper tray and
'Plain/Recycled' paper
Everyone else gets this but I fiddled now I can't get rid of the 'Bypass' and
Thick 3 settings
LO seems to remember it somewhere. If I set it back to what it should be when I
reopen Writer or Calc etc and try and print it's gone back to Bypass and Thick 3

I can't remember what I did to set it to Bypass etc but now I can't get rid of
it

LibreOffice typically does this in the page styles.
Format Page opens the settings for the page style used in the current
page. On the tab called Page there is that setting.

I would know of no way (apart from automating) to change the setting for
  all documents and such.

When the setting is changed for all your new documents, then you may
have to set/change the default template.

Which icons? The launcher icons or the toolbar icons?

I'm not on my opensuse machine now, but I think they package some of the
toolbar icon themes separately.

There are also launcher icons in some sets on sites like gnome-look, but as
I'm just finding then they don't seem to be applied once the app opens.

If FDF means editable PDF, then it should be enough to put widgets from
the form toolbar into a writer document. Then export it in PDF.

Hope to have understood and given a correct answer.

Have you looked at this page?

  Under the section called:

Installation of LibreOffice on Fedora, Suse, Mandriva and other Linux

Re: [libreoffice-users] Writer randomly fails to print

I am now convinced that this is bug 50784 If I change the client timeout
on the CUPS server the amount of time it takes before LO stops printing
exactly matches. In the end I have made my timeout 5400 which is 90
mins which since we are a school is OK. It's a bit of a nasty hack but
it seems to work.

of problems. LO will regenerate a new default folder if it is missing
when starting up.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Writer randomly fails to print

2012-10-23 Thread Malcolm Moore
Some more experimentation led me to believe it's not random,
it's time related I am now minded to believe it's bug 50784
which is posted against version 3.5.2

I will investigate more tomorrow and if it is as I fear, and the bug
continues into 3.5.4 and 3.6.1. I will add a note to that bug report

Many thanks to everyone

This is LO 3.6.1 on openSuse 12.1. The machines are set to
print to a single CUPS server.

As far as I can see the CUPS server never saw the print job.
It doesn't matter which printer they use ( students have 12
to choose from ). Once it happens you can't print to any printer
 in the list.

If you have two copies of LO open you have to close them both
and re-open them and the document before it will print again.

 Any ideas ?

Mal

Are they having problems printing from other programs?

Are all the work stations reporting the problem?

My thoughts are it is:

1. An bug in LO; possibly specific to openSUSE

2. A local bug in openSUSE

3. the print server has a bug

I have not had any random print problems with LO using Linux Mint 13
with a printer directly connected via USB port.

Sometimes renaming the .config/libreoffice/user/3 folder clears up a
lot

[libreoffice-users] LO 3.n crashes on copy and paste

2012-09-28 Thread Malcolm Moore
Maybe I've done something terribly wrong but if our users do a Google search
for a picture then
copy and paste the image into LO it hangs.

If there is a post I've missed about this can you point me to it please ...
else the complete description follows

Start a LO document
Open FF or Chrome
Search on a picture eg Cats
Google them shows loads of pictures in a grid of biggish thumbnails which when
you hover over get bigger
Hover over a picture and Copy image
Go to LO and Paste
Picture will now appear in LO
LO will now either run unbelievable slowly of hang completely

If however when you have chosen the image in Google you click on it and go to
the full size image
you can cut and paste successfully. The method that hangs LO worked in Word and
I am getting
a lot of grief over this now we have shown Word the door . !

Can you print out the document as a PDF file?
When you then use your default PDF viewer, do you have the print options

cannot get LO to print a document in duplex mode, so I print/export the

  duplex. That is my work-around.

You might need to do something like that as well.

Hi.
It is something I have never managed to get to the bottom of in more
than 5 years with Linux. In my case it doesn't cause me mutch problem,
but it seems as though printer settings are stored in 2 places, and the

other applications get the other set. A bit like you get with LO and
  other apps.
I have no idea, but can say I have observed the phenomenon. Sorry not

They also tell the printer how fast

[libreoffice-users] Printer Dialogs

2012-04-05 Thread Malcolm Moore
I wonder if I could revisit this issue again.

I have been experimenting a bit more and
LibreOffice doesn't show all the options
the printer has available.

For example:- ( With LO 3.5.n and openSuse 12.1)
In the system printer dialog my Ricoh MPC 5000
has 4 trays and a bypass. In LO it only show the 4 trays

Also it has paper types of Thick, Thick2 and Thick3 for
different weights of paper. The LO dialog only has Thick
which is a bit of a problem as some types of iron on
paper we use has to go through the printer at Thick 2 or
Thick 3

If I use something like Gimp or Chrome and print a page it shows all
the options ( 21 types of paper and 5 trays ) LO only shows
13 types of paper and 4 trays.

Where is LO getting it's information from and why is it wrong
on some printers? ( our old HP 4250's are correct but they are
pretty simple souls at the best of times ) Also, is there some
way to tell LO to get it's information from the system?

Many thanks

Mal

[libreoffice-users] Printer properties

2012-03-15 Thread Malcolm Moore
I understand that LO does it's own printing dialog
which I must admit looks a lot prettier than the system
one ( openSuse ) however it seems to miss stuff. For
example my printer has 4 trays and a bypass tray. The
system dialogs see all of these and I can use them. LO
only sees the 4 trays and doesn't give me the option to
use the bypass tray. Is there some way I can tell it
there is a bypass tray.
