I'm running LO 3.5 under Lubuntu 12.04 and, until recently the relevant icons
appeared under Office in the menu system. Now they don't and I have to start
the program via the command line. Any ideas anyone?

For information the installation is the real LO installed via dpkg, not the
Ubuntu build with its attendant problems. :-)

Re: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice 3.5 Installation problem

2012-06-20 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Revo Uninstaller has a free trial period and they think that you will find it
so invaluable that you will purchase it after 30days or whatever.  Personally i
intend to try it once, completely declutter the Xp and then uninstall it.  I
have ended up buying a few things that way.  Perfectdisk was a classic
example.

Have you been able to check the 3.5.x's md5sum or Sha-whatever to check that
you have a proper error-free download?|Did you download from the official TDF
page or some other website?  (many other sites also offer the official
download  but it's not always so easy to check the 3rd party has got it right
on their site)
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/

If you try to re-run the 3.5.x installer it 'should' offer a choice of 3
options which includes Repair as the top option.  I found that useful for
adding in components that i hadn't thought i would need.

I must admit that i tend to use GnuLinux myself and only use Windows very
occasionally now and mostly that is just to fix whatever problem one of my
colleagues has run into.

Tom :)

Hello,

I have done that and there is nothing there.

Note that the pop-up window asks me to 'Close LibreOffice 3.5 and 3.5
Quickstarter' and they are not on my computer, so how can I get past this?

I think there must be an error in the installation system. How can I get
through to the people who put the installer together?

Thanks for trying!

Hi :)
Dohhh, sorry.  My turn for missing an earlier post!  I hadn't realised you had
already tried re-downloading.  Sorry chap!

It is probably best for you to avoid the 3.6.0 at this point.  Beta-testing
pre-release versions is better after you have some idea of how to get back to
safety.  The 3.5.4 is probably the best version to install right now although a
lot of us are sticking with the 3.4.6 on machines we can't fuss about with all
the time.  The 3rd point is roughly equivalent to a service pack so 3.4.6 is
roughly like 3.4 Sp6.  However the .4 is usually where a branch suddenly
becomes very much more stable so i am moving towards getting that on all
machines except the one i can really play around with where i will hopefully
get time to test-drive the 3.6.0 before it gets released properly.  It's always
good to try the latest beta somewhere where you don't need to rely on it always
working in order to get real work done.

We don't normally have all this trouble trying to install LibreOffice on Win7
which is why we are a bit stuck.  Usually it just goes through really
smoothly.  On Xp i would usually approach pretty much any problem by
defragging, disk-cleanup, running MS updates and rebooting but none of that
should be causing problems for LibreOffice.

I think just pick a version of LO, it doesn't really mater which one.  Then
uninstall all other versions and try installing just the 1 again.

By the way do you have OpenOffice, NeoOffice, Lotus Symphony or any othe Office
Suite installed on the machine?  LO installs easily alongside MS Office but
sometimes does have troubles alongside one of the OOo forks.
Regards from
Tom :)

Brian - have you checked your running processes? Are you doing this from
an Admin account?

CTRL-SHIFT-ESC (brings up the task manager on all versions of windows)

Be sure you are on the 'Processes' tab - look for *any* soffice.exe or
soffice.bin processes... if you don't see any, be sure the 'Show
processes from all users' is checked (bottom left of task manager window)

If you see any, kill them, then run the installer again and it will
work. If you *don't*, then I imagine something is hosed, or you are not
doing this from an Admin account.

Hi :)
WoooHooo!! :))  Congrats on fixing it.  Hopefully you can continue
collaborating because LO and AOO (or the older OOo) are kinda just different
versions of the same program.  LO has a lot more features and is a lot more
streamlined and advanced but still fairly similar.

You can have both AOO and LO if you kinda subvert this guide a little

Curious, what is your OS?

Try downloading LO again, I am assuming you have a corrupted install

Hello,

I am trying to install LibreOffice 3.5 on my Windows 7 64-bit system, but
it fails to complete.

I go through the process and click the Install Button, The UAC then

appears

and I click that. Shortly after I get a separate widow which says:

Please exit LibreOffice 3.5 and the LibreOffice Quickstarter before you

continue with an OK button

On clicking the OK button, the window disappears and the main installer
tells me that:

The wizard was interrupted before LibreOffice 3.5 could be completely

installed with a Finish Button.

I have tried several times. How can I make this a successful

installation?

(I am a current user of LibreOffice 3.4)

Thanks,

Brian Charlton

Did you try what the installer suggested and exit the LibreOffice
Quickstarter (right click on the icon in the taskbar tray) then try
again. Alternatively, open Windows Task Manager and end any processes
named soffice.

Dave

Re: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice 3.5 and Win 7 UAC

2012-06-03 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Ahhh, that is the cunning thing about renaming instead of just deleting your
old profile!  Either way forces LO to reset back to factory defaults by
generating a whole new copy of the default settings.

Renaming has the advantage that you can copy back some of the settings from
your old folder into the new one until it breaks again.  Then you can just
delete out the bit that caused the breakage and perhaps gradually pin-point
exactly what caused the problem.  Most times i don't have time for that as it's
faster and easier just to tweak the 1 or 2 things i happen to remember at the
time.  I do need to start getting more organised about it tho.

Tom :)

I hate Vista. I had to reinstall 3.4.5 twice to get it working on my
Vista Laptop. Vista is a bad OS, compared to XP and Win7. One thing
you need to do is reboot between uninstall and the next install. Also,
I would make sure the program data folder for LO is removed after the
uninstall. There may be things that are left in that type of folder
that could be the issue. Also, make sure your downloaded version was
completely downloaded. Sometimes people have their downloads
unfinished from one of our mirrors [which the download system choose
for you].

For now, I would stick with 3.4.5. If you can.

3.5.0 is the cutting edge version or some people call it bleeding
edge when these type of errors happen.

To be honest, unless you need any feature that is new with 3.5.0, I
would stick with 3.4.5 for a bit longer. It is always nice to see what
the newest version is all about, so to speak, but if you want to use LO
without any issues, stick with the previous version when the newest one
ends with .0 or .1. These are not for the people who need it for
day-to-day, business, or enterprise, applications.

I have been using LO since the first month it was out. I am sticking
with 3.4.5 till 3.5.x gets to .1 or .2, at least, since I use it for
home-office work.

With each system, there are differences. Some will install and run with

You might have a look at

Hi :)
+1
Even if people did get it a little more promotion doesn't hurt!  Apparently it
has been picked up by quite a few publications and blogs so it is shaping up as
a really good event.

Good work Cor

Hi,

As far as I remember, there wasn't yet send a special note to this lists about
the coming bug-hunting event.
It will be next weeks Wednesday and Tuesday.
And of course we test the new features and enhancements that are prepared for
LibreOffice 3.5.0.

TDF announces the first LibreOffice 3.5 bug hunting session to improve
the quality and stability of the best free office suite ever

The Internet, December 20, 2011 - The Document Foundation (TDF)
announces the first LibreOffice 3.5 bug hunting session, to be held in a
virtual environment on December 28 and 29, 2011. Volunteer bug hunters
will gather on the Internet from the five continents to spot software
problems of the upcoming new major release, featuring a large number of
improvements and new functions, in order to make LibreOffice 3.5 the
best free office suite ever.

Participating is easy, and fun. Details are available on the wiki of The
Document Foundation
(http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/BugHunting_Session_3.5.0.-1),
where is also possible to find a comprehensive list of LibreOffice 3.5
new and improved features
(http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/3.5).

All you need is a PC with Windows, MacOS X or Linux, and LibreOffice 3.5
Beta 1 (which can be downloaded from
http://www.libreoffice.org/pre-releases), plus a lot of enthusiasm.
Filing bugs will be extremely easy, thanks to the help of several
experienced people who will be around to help users and supporters with
tips, on the QA mailing list (libreoffice...@freedesktop.org) and IRC
channel (irc://chat.freenode.net/libreoffice), from 8AM to 10PM UTC on
both days.

A second LibreOffice 3.5 bug hunting session will be organized -
following the same pattern - in mid January, immediately after the
release of LibreOffice 3.5 Release Candidate 1.

The first bug hunting session has been organized by LibreOffice QA team,
and coordinated by Rainer Bielefeld and Cor Nouws. At the end of the two
days, Rainer and Cor will award the title of Bug Hunting Hero to the
individual who has been able to spot the highest number of bugs, report
them correctly and file them on BugZilla
(http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport).

Re: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice 3.5: bug hunting session and new features

2011-12-23 Thread Virgil Arrington
I'm not nearly knowledgeable enough to officially participate in the
bug-hunting session. I'm just a user, not a programmer. I haven't even yet
figured out LO's bugzilla or feature requests system, so forgive me if I'm
putting this stuff in the wrong place. For those who will be participating,
I offer the following comments on behavior I've noticed in LO 3.4.4. on
Windows 7. I assume most of these issues are well known by the developers. I
know I'm reporting these things in the wrong place, but I can't find a place
on LO's website for feature requests.

1. The Graphite port of Linux Libertine G has several issues:

a. My attempt to use the algn option in a character style for Footnote
Characters always results in a crash.

b. The itlc and lith and hang options don't seem to work on my system.
c. Anytime I try to generate a table of contents in a document using Linux
Libertine G, LO crashes.

2. For some odd reason, I've noticed that the Formatting Aids often change
by themselves, unchecking every option, so that, when I click View,
Nonprinting Characters, nothing shows up. I have had to go into Options,
Writer, Formatting Aids, several times to recheck my options. I have NOT
noticed that behavior in the Portable version of LO, only in the standard
version.

In terms of feature requests, I would love to see the following at some
time:

1. A tabbed document interface, like Atlantis (rssol.com), or Lotus Symphony
(but without all the other senseless changes IBM made to the menu
structure).

2. The full path of the current document in the Title Bar.
3. Full support for the expert glyphs of OpenType fonts, such as old style
numbering and true small caps. The Graphite/Linux Libertine option is great
(even if incomplete and buggy) but it's limited to the one typeface.
4. An easy way to assign hot-keys to special characters (such as Alt-. to
insert an ellipses (...)). I have to believe it can be done, but so far I
haven't been able to figure it out. (By comparison, Atlantis includes a
hot-key option in its Insert/Symbol dialog)
5. A better justification system -- more like that used in LaTeX, especially
with the Microtype package.
6. Better hyphenation. I often find word being hyphenated at the wrong
location (ex. arbit-rary, instead of arbi-trary).

I don't want to sound ungrateful. LibreOffice is an absolutely wonderful
package.

I've been using Star/Open/LibreOffice since SO 5.2. It has developed into a
great program, and I still appreciate the many little things it does better
than other programs (such as independent control of orphans and widows)

No thanks needed ;-) I'm glad to help a bit with explaining.

I do have an a question about testing beta versions.

I currently have 3.4.4 loaded on my system. If I were to load a beta
version of 3.5, will it interfere with my customized settings for 3.4.4?
I have a lot of templates, styles, etc., and I don't want to mess things
up.

Understandable !
Therefore beta builds will install in parallel. It is mentioned in the
release notes under installation (very briefly, IMO, but it is there).

You might have a look at

A bugfix is available (comment #27), also a workaround (toggle 'Page

Re: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice 3.5: bug hunting session and newfeatures

2011-12-23 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
There si a guide for installing different versions in parallel
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Installing_in_parallel
Hopefully it works a bit better.

For a single machine it is probably a lot better to just uninstall and
reinstall unless you need to make sure you have a working version that you are
familiar with in order to meet unexpected deadlines.  Uninstalling and
reinstalling is easy and doesn't take long but it's not always time that one
has in a working office.

Regards from
Tom :)

After reporting problems with Graphite and Linux Libertine, I have now found
that my problems have disappeared.

Today, I installed the beta version of LO 3.5 and uninstalled my old OpenOffice
3.3. After performing those operations, I experimented with some files having
Linux Libertine as the font. All of the problems I reported earlier
disappeared. I tried the documents in both LO 3.5 beta and LO 3.4.4. and they
worked in both programs.

I don't know if the problem was solved by installing LO 3.5 or by uninstalling
OO 3.3. My guess is that it was the latter. Either way, life is so much better
now with LO and Linux Libertine G.
