numbering book pages?
Open Office people: I am trying to design a 100-page book using Open Office 4.1.6 For three days I have wrestled with various issues and seem to have most of them worked out. However, I cannot get the page numbering sequence to work as I would like. I have front matter that I would like numbered with Roman numerals and a few pages later the rest of the book numbered with Arabic numerals. If needed, I can skip the first set of Roman numerals (though I would prefer to have them), but every time I apply the footer numbers to the later section of the text, the number starts with 13--which in fact it is the 13th page, but I want the numbering to start there with 1. What can I do to correct this problem? Thanks. -- Mike Coughlin Letterpress Book Publishing website: letterpressbookpublishing.com

After selecting File > Print from the menu look for the "Range and copies" section of the print dialog. In there is a Pages radio button. Select "Pages" then enter the desired range or ranges of pages in the box. For example enter "1-3;7;11-12;19" without the quotes to print pages 1 through 3, and 7, and 11 through 12, and 19. Hello, how are you? I did this document in the writter, formatted with page format a4. I printed in a place near here and it has word 2010, at the time I did not realize but I got home and left only 2 of the 4 images that were on pages 2 and 3. I have word 2010 in the notebook and it happens the same. What can be this difference of pages, opening from writter to word, being that in both the default is the format of page a4? The images are maps and formatting decreasing size to leave the same page . Thank you for your help. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.apache.org

So you actually want to print *four* A5 pages on two-sided A4. I cannot find how to perform this set up from the open document work space. Try a "brochure". I cannot work out how to set the page orientation to landscape rather than default portrait (upright) orientation. Further, I cannot find how to set the document size to A5. I'm surprised you cannot find this in either the built-in help text or the documentation. You may be suffering from Microsoftitis. Microsoft Office products - such as Word - treat page size and orientation as printer properties. OpenOffice treats them instead as aspects of page formatting (which I happen to think is more sensible). So go to Format | Page... | Page and set the page size and orientation there. But you don't want your *page* orientation to be landscape, in fact: those A5 pages are in portrait orientation. It's the A4 *paper* that needs to be in landscape orientation.. OpenOffice will arrange what you need automatically: o Set your document to have A5 pages in portrait orientation. o Create the document normally - all four pages *sequentially*. o Go to File | Printer Settings... | Properties... and set your printer to use A4 paper in landscape orientation. o Go to Tools | Options... | OpenOffice Writer | Print | Pages and tick Brochure. (Alternatively you can select this in the print dialogue at File | Print... | Options... | Page Layout | Layout | Brochure.) o Print the document double-sided on A4 paper (automatically or manually as necessary). OpenOffice will print pages 4 and 1 on one side of the paper and 2 and 3 on the other. In fact, the brochure facility is even cleverer: if your document contains more than four pages, they will be distributed across more than one sheet of paper such that you can fold the resulting stack to create a brochure containing an arbitrary number of pages. I am running AOO 4.1.3 on iMac. Then you'll have to translate Tools | Options... to OpenOffice | Preferences, of course. I trust this helps. How to set up 2 A5 pages to print on 1 A4 sheet
I need to type set and print 2 x A5 pages in a document file onto a single sheet of A4 paper. - this shows the back cover (text left justified) of an A5 size pamphlet with the front cover (containing an inserted picture with text being centred inside the line drawing insertion. being centre justified. There are workarounds for this, but you don't need these. Can anyone tell me how to go about this please. Page orientation is a property of page styles. If you have not consciously set any page style, all your pages will probably have the Default page style. You can see this when you go to Format | Page...: the panel is headed Page Style: Default. So all you need is to use a different page style for the rogue sheet. o Go to Format | Styles and Formatting... (or click the Styles and Formatting button in the Formatting toolbar, or press F11). o Click the Page Styles button in the Styles and Formatting window. o Click Default (or whatever your main style is called). o Click the "New Style from Selection" button. o Give your new style a name. o Right-click the new style name in the list and select Modify... . o Change the orientation of this style to Landscape. o With the rogue sheet displayed, double-click the new style name to apply it to that sheet. o Voilà! In the Print dialogue, under "Range and copies", click the Pages radio button and enter the list of required pages as "1,3,5,7,9" or whatever (no quotes). I don't see any way to indicate "only odd pages" without specifying them explicitly. If you want to do this, the odd-numbered pages must presumably be clearly identifiable as different in some way. It might be easier to edit out the original even-page material - probably in a copy of the original document - leaving just the material that you need to print. If your real purpose is to be able to print the material double-sided, there are often easier ways to achieve this. Incidentally, your Subject header, "numbering of pages", doesn't fit this question. Are you perhaps asking instead to be able to number the pages of your document with odd numbers only - so that the second page is numbered "3", the third page "5", and so on? There are ways to do that. The information I am trying to print in this manner comes as an attachment of an e-mail. I don't see that the source of your material matters, in fact. I trust this helps. The pages you see are fictitious and depend on the output paper size. If you mark text on a page and insert it somewhere else in the document, it is inserted into the stream of text and the text re-paginated to account for the missing text in one place and the added text in the other place. Printing two sided pages from Open Office on my HP Officejet 6500A Plus printer
My HP Officejet 6500 printer has the capability of printing two sided pages; but (unlike when I used MS Office) I can't find how to do this when I use OpenOffice 4.1.0. I am running Windows 7. I've tried Open Office Help and it says I need to add Java RTE to do this. Norton says this is a dangerous download and I'm not even sure it is the right one. Is there any other way I can get Open Office to let me do this when I choose Print in Open Office?

No. The only thing that looks like it could be raw output is the choice in the properties subdialog of the print dialog called Printer Language Type which allows selection of pdf (the default) and several levels of postscript, one of which is labelled from driver which I assume means use the driver says it likes ps. How does OO do printing? Does it produce a pdf and then hand that off? If so, then presumably the print to file option for pdf is the exact output that would be fed to the print mechanism? When sending to the printer I have the option of different varieties of postscript as well as pdf (default), but print to file only shows pdf so I assume that's what oo produces? If I print to file and generate a pdf, it looks ok, but of course it is page-by-page without any duplexing operating. It is behaving as if there is a %%Requirements: duplex (tumble) command in the postscript file. I suspect the problem is in the print system, not oo, but it would be nice to get the output from OO right before it goes to the print mechanism, and then also know what the cmd is that it's using to send to the print spooler.
