Re: Question on Apache OpenOffice

2023-08-21 Thread David Robley

Yes to both. As per answers to this question in another mailing list:

"Both programs should install side by side because they use different
default install locations.

However, the LibreOffice shell extensions could be overwritten by Apache
OpenOffice, so I would suggest to do a "Custom Install" and deselect the
"Windows Explorer Extension" found under "Optional Components". " -
Matthias Seidel

"The short answer is yes. You can install OpenOffice now. Both will
work. However there will be a "fight" to be associated with normal
office file types (such as Open Document, Word, Excel, etc) This means
that when you open a Word file with one Office (be it OpenOffice,
LibreOffice or MS Office) it will become associated with this suite and
to open with another one you will have to deliberately use the "Open
with" option. If this acceptable then you can use multiple Office
suites. If this is confusing then it is better to uninstall the one(s)
you don't use so much." - Pedro Lino

Second, but equally important: What system do you have (OS)?

I'm not aware of a way to prevent a font from being embedded in an exported PDF
file, but from what I've read it seems that fonts won't be embedded if the font
licence doesn't allow it. Assuming that you know which of your fonts have
restrictive licences, have you tried exporting a document with such a font and
then checking in your PDF reader whether the fonts are embedded?

I don't know about embedded fonts in RTF files.

Hi, thanks for all you do!

I just have a question about Open Office.

I want to share an rtf written file, and I know I mustn’t embed fonts
unless I am sure they are ok to embed. Are fonts automatically embedded on
an RTF file or is this not an issue?

Also, if I export a document to be a PDF, do the fonts have to be embedded
or is there a way I can prevent them from being embedded?

I basically want to share a file, ideally as a PDF, without embedding any
fonts that aren’t licensed to be embedded.

Thanks so much!

I assume you are using Windows.

There are four headings above the file listing, Name. Date modified,
Type and Size.

Clicking on one of these will sort your list according to that label,
click again and it reverses the order. All you have to do to get the
order correct is click on "Name" and it should revert.

Greetings. First, I truly appreciate Open Office, and I thank you.

My question is about alphabetizing a list of files in a folder. For some
reason, a couple of my files are in reverse alphabetical order, i.e. from Z to
A instead of A to Z. I have hunted to see how to correct this, and cannot find
anything. It’s not a major problem, just annoying.
I find it strange, since the files are listed alphabetically in the main files
in File Explorer of the computer. It is only when I want to search files in
Open Office.
I had put this question on a forum and no one seemed to understand what I was
saying.
I look forward to your reply and appreciate your assistance.

Re: Question for Blended Learning

2020-08-03 Thread Alan B
Doris,

Following up Dan's note, here is a link I found with detailed instructions
how to install OpenOffice on a Chromebook. The article is dated July this
year so it is as current as possible.

http://www.linuxmadesimple.info/2020/07/how-to-install-openoffice-on-chromebook.html

I saw that Google Docs includes an app called "Forms". It may or may not
enable teaching the database concepts in your lesson. From the looking I
did, there didn't seem to be a way to review the underlying structure.

I also found that Google has a product called "Google Cloud Databases".
These included traditional SQL, e.g. MS SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and
others, as well as noSQL databases. There is a free option with this
product. You would have to check with Google to ask if there is an
educational option.

These two options are mentioned because Chromebooks are designed for
connected use and it generally requires some extra work, per the
instructions in the link, to install local programs on them as is done with
a traditional Windows pc/laptop.

Our county schools will have 'blended learning' where students have
face-to-face instruction two days a week and work at home online three days

grades 4-12 will receive a Chromebook to use for at-home distance learning.

We have traditionally used Microsoft Office Access to teach units on

Thank you for any insight you can provide
Open Office and LibreOffice be installed on chromebook. Instructions
for installing LibreOffice are found here:
https://support.google.com/chromebook/thread/29506100?hl=en. I don's
see any reason why Open Office could not be installed the same way.
(LibreOffice is a fork of Open Office.) You might want to check out
both of these programs to see which one you might want to use. There
are also user guides that can be downloaded for free.

In case you did not know, both of these programs' license allows you to
download the installation file and then install it on as many computers
as you have. There is no cost for downloading the program either. (A
copy of the license comes with the download file.)

Martin,

The purpose of my question is this: I am working on the next edition of
my two-language dictionary and want to be able to see two views of the
same document. This is very important since in one of the views I can
enter text, whereas in the other view I can do independent searches. In
MS Word, it was a trivial matter to split the screen vertically into an
upper and a lower section.

Your suggestion of selecting New Window works like a charm! As a matter
of fact, it’s an even better solution than splitting the screen since it
gives me the scope of seeing two full versions of the same document. I
couldn’t ask for anything more than that!

Thank you very much for your email.

Steve

in the text processor.

I don't know what the purpose of your question is, but if for example to
have one part
displaying page 1 and in the other part editing page 20 that could be
achieved by:

In the open writer document go to Windows in the top menu and select New
Window now
you have two windows of the same document and are able to scroll on both
windows to

two different pages in the same document.

I would’ve expected to find this in the “View” menu or on the vertical

isn’t there or is there a way to split the screen when entering text

...oops, accidentally hit send. The complete message was meant to be...

A comment about installing OpenOffice when Microsoft Office is already
installed.

Watch carefully during the installation process. At one point a question
will be asked whether to make OpenOffice the "default" program.

If you respond Yes then double-clicking one of you document files will open
it in OpenOffice. If No is selected then double-clicking one of your
documents will continue to open in Microsoft product after OpenOffice
install completes.

In either case, the default program can be changed so double-click always
opens documents in a particular program.

And if the default is not the program you wish to use for a given document
then right-click the file, select the "open with" option and click the
program you want.

If no data is recoverable on your crashed computer, then all the files you (and
OpenOffice) have stored on that computer are gone. OpenOffice is not a cloud
application and keeps its files locally. If you have a remote backup, then you
can transfer files from that to your rebuilt computer. You may have edited
OpenOffice files on your laptop; if so, these can be transferred to your
rebuilt computer.

If you are Pasting data from an external source, you avoid such gray spaces by
using /Edit /Paste Special and selecting "Unformatted text" from the popup menu.

What you are seeing is non-breaking spaces, possibly as a result of
copying text from another source (likely your web browser). Non-breaking
spaces are not broken at the end of a line and are entered from the
keyboard with the Ctrl+Shift+Spacebar shortcut keys.

As these may mess with your formatting, you may wish to do a

Bill,
The "non printing characters" display may be enabled.
Open the View menu and look for a check mark next to "Nonprinting
Characters". If there is a mark, click the item to unselect it. That should
remove the shading between words.

If that's not it, follow the menu path Tools > Options. On the left side of
the window that opens select the branch "OpenOffice Writer/Web" and within
that, "Formatting Aids". In the "Display of" section make certain "Spaces"
is not checked.

I pulled down the user manual for the program.

No, you downloaded a 2005 edition of the user guide for version 2 of the
original software called OpenOffice.org, before it became Apache OpenOffice.

I am trying to figure out why is it so damn hard to copy and paste from online
items to your word program.

When you say "word program", you most likely mean the "Writer" word processing
component of the software.

Upon looking through your user manual I figured out why, it is because in the
index of this user manual you cannot even keep the same context to what you
should be defining.

No, it is because you were reading a version 2.0 user guide which did not
relate to the current (4.1.5) version of the software.

I refer you to
https://www.openoffice.org/documentation/manuals/OOo2.x/user_guide2_draft.pdf

Re: Question about your user manual

2018-06-15 Thread Doug Cox
I appreciate the response. I pulled the manual down from the Brother web site
so if there is another then I am not sure why this was the only manual to pull
down. The problem I have is if I copy a segment from a web site and then try to
paste into your writer program it will not let me paste the information unless
I try many times picking various spots in the copy part. It is like I have to
keep going back and right clicking copy and then go back to the writer program
and try to paste and it will not let me until some random try and then I can
paste it. I do not understand why it is so hard to copy and paste. I know it is
capable of doing the task, but I do not understand why it is so hard to make it
possible to do this. I am just trying to figure out why or what I am doing
wrong that this has to be so difficult of a task to do. Thank you.

No, it is because you were reading a version 2.0 user guide which did not

1. "clear" the user profile as described over and over again on

AOO for.

2. Use File -> Recent Documents and at the bottom of the list,
there is the option "Clear List". Click on that and the entire

to then add the files you do want by opening them.

Easier to remove the Recent Documents from the File menu under

Martin,
I don't see how to do this under Tools -> Customize. Can you be more
specific and/or give a more detailed procedure?

Go to Tools -> Customize
In the Menus tab select File from the OpenOffice Menus
In the Menu Content select Recent Documents
Select Modify and Delete from the pull down menu

Note this only removes the entry from the File menu whenever you
restore the Recent Documents it still shows the last 10 entries.

As an alternative you can create a macro that clear the entries at
the moment you close OpenOffice
But to be honest I don't see any benefit to have documents removed
from the list, these type of questions are raised by people who have

time to much.

Martin,
Yes. That is what I expected. It is all or nothing.

It's all or nothing in Recent Documents, not in the Oblivion Extension.

I must add that I rarely need to delete files from the recent files
list. The only times I could have deleted a file or two in the list is
when I needed more space for the recurring files I did want in the
list. That has been rare. I could count the number of times I wanted
to delete a file or two on one hand.

I totally agree, but I'm only answering questions from users, not
judging them.

Thanks.

Hi Karen—

Here’s what you do:

1. Click on an incon for the file type you want to always open with AOO while
simultaneously holding down the Control key.

2. Release the Control key and hover the cursor over ‘Open With’

3. Hold down the Option key; ‘Open With’ will change to ‘Always Open With’.

4. Select Open Office. You may have to first select ‘Other’ if AOO does not
appear as one of the first choices in the resulting list.

Re: Question, story for Computerworld

2018-01-24 Thread Glen Kohler
Paul—

I don’t know how meaningful .docx format really is. I use Word for Mac 2008,
and occasionally 2011(hate the interface), including OLE with Excel and mail
merge. Either format does pretty much the same stuff, so I set the default save
to .doc so everyone can open it.

Libre Office for Mac, last time I looked, had problems printing business size
envelopes. AOO seems to have overcome that hurdle, making it the preferred
OpenSource candidate to replace Word at this time.

I see that often. Ignore it and the app will work just fine otherwise.

Sorry, but this is not best advice. Such inappropriate underlining is
distracting. In addition, it means that the very useful spelling
checking facility is no longer effective. The problem is due to
corruption of (presumably one file within) the OpenOffice user
profile, and the (rather blunt) solution is to delete or rename the
profile and allow OpenOffice to create a new, clean copy.
Instructions for this depend on the operating system, but are
available on the web.

I am on a Mac and that could be why it happens.

There are plenty of things that can be blamed on Macs - but this is
not one of them!

Re: Question!

2017-11-09 Thread zahra a
hello.
from openoffice readme file.
Is OpenOffice really free for any user?
OpenOffice is free for use by everybody. You may take this copy of
OpenOffice and install it on as many computers as you like, and use it
for any purpose you like (including commercial, government, public
administration and educational use). For further details see the
license text delivered together with OpenOffice or
http://www.openoffice.org/license.html
Why is OpenOffice free for any user?
You can use this copy of OpenOffice today free of charge because
individual contributors and corporate sponsors have designed,
developed, tested, translated, documented, supported, marketed, and
helped in many other ways to make OpenOffice what it is today - the
world's leading open-source office software.
If you appreciate their efforts, and would like to ensure Apache
OpenOffice continues into the future, please consider contributing to
the project - see http://openoffice.apache.org/get-involved.html for
details on contributing time and
http://www.apache.org/foundation/contributing.html for details on
donations. Everyone has a contribution to make.

hope that help, God bless you all!

OpenOffice is an open source product that is free.
If you download it from www.openoffice.org you are redirected to
www.sourceforge.net the download will automatically start within a few
seconds.

Don't click on anything.

You can install the product on all your systems.

The OP removed screen capture shows the 4.1.4 installation dialog asking
to close:

  * Cent Browser
  * Visual Studio Code

The installation is not accessing these programs, it is asking for them
to be closed during installation, which suggests that they are holding
open resources on your computer that it needs to properly complete the
installation.

Provided you started the installation program download from:
http://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html there is no security
issue. If you wish to confirm you have downloaded a clean copy of the
software you can test the checksums here:
https://www.openoffice.org/download/checksums.html

Steve,
Notice Heidi said "from online". That means she isn't opening local
documents but clicking on web page links that make the server send a
MSOffice type file.
Thus, what she is really asking is how to modify the browser helper to
handle MSOffice file downloads.

That, of course, has different answers depending on what operating
system and web browser she is using.

custom installation, you have many options.
selecting which component of openoffice you need to install, (although
openoffice is integrated package) but selection of component is still
possible.
i am not sure whether its useful or may causes proble, but one time i

for me it released only near 20 mb of my hard disk!

Re: Question about Calc

2017-08-27 Thread Joost Andrae

Hello Herbert,

select a cell range (all the cells you want to have within your chart)
containing some data (including textual headers of the columns and rows,
like within the example below)

Apples Bananas
Monday 1,00 € 2,00 €
Tuesday 4,00 € 4,00 €
Wednesday 3,00 € 5,00 €
Thursday5,00 € 2,00 €
Friday 4,00 € 4,00 €
Saturday3,00 € 3,00 €

Then click the chart symbol within the symbol panel or select menu item
/Insert/Chart (in the German localization it's called Diagramm)

Within the chart dialog you can select the chart type, the data range
and you can define if you want to have the data visualized in rows or in
columns. You may also define a title, sub title, and the description of
the x or the y axis. After finishing the dialog by selecting the finish
button you have an embedded chart object within your document.

When double clicking the embedded object you open this object within the
inplace mode where you can select each chart object to do some
formatting like changing the background colour and many more things.
(tip: select an item and do right mouse click)

Kind regards, Joost

Do you mean values on the axes? It is difficult to create a chart
without these.

Or do you mean that you want individual data points labelled with their value?

o Double-click the chart to select it - so that it has the grey
surround, not the eight coloured handles.

o Go to Insert | Data Labels... and make your choices.

Alternatively, you can right-click one of the points and go to Insert
Data Labels and then similarly to Format Data Labels... .

Have you read Chapter 3 "Creating Charts and Graphs" of the Calc Guide? See
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/OOo3_User_Guides/OOo3.3_User_Guide_Chapters
.

I trust this helps.

Re: Question re: footers

2017-08-02 Thread Richard Beeston

Hi Ian

The way that I put in footnotes is go to Tools - then footnotes/endnotes
then put in the way you want the footnotes shown - either by roman numeerals
letters or ordinary numbering as shown in the drop down box under footnotes.
Then go to the line underneath and work out what alternativve youy want
whether it is counting per p-age or counting per chapter or counting per
document and then put mthe option of where you want the footer to go.
If you use the auto numbering and per document it will autpomatically number
the footnote when you click enter and then it opens a footnote box at the
bottom of the page if this is where you want it and then click enter.

I have done this on several thesis papers and have had no trouble . If I try
to put the footer in manually by number then you will get it every page
because it does not know where the numbers are meant to be.

staan (half over snijrand bvb)..

Translate question / comment into English:
it's open document Text.
I can't find the version anywhere.
It is displayed on a checkout screen, not on an ordinary computer.
The labels are printed using a Zebra GK420d ELP printer connected with
cables.

If I am in printer settings - properties - Advanced setting, the Media
Type Label with gaps' change to 'Continuous', no extra blank labels are
more printed, however, all is not well aligned to stand on the labels
(half on cutting edge example) ..

Answer:
The fact that you have an Open Document file doesn't mean that it is
generated with OpenOffice.
You should ask a system administrator or the company that has installed
your checkouts to correct the problem.
We're here to assist users with OpenOffice issues, not to solve non
related business issues.

My question was not the type of document, but which application and version you
use.
Because there are different ways to generate labels we like to know how you
generate labels.
Without being more specific I can't help.

In Dutch:
Welke applicatie en versie gebruik je om labels te printen.
Op welke manier genereer je de labels, er zijn verschillende manieren om
dat te doen.
Indien je niet meer specifiek bent kan ik je niet helpen.

What application and version do you use to print the labels?

Do you use Mail Merge to print labels?
Probably most important, can you share the label document with some address

Re: Question

2016-10-17 Thread Chaos
Beste MArtin,

staan (half over snijrand bvb)..

This non-subscribed poster attached 3 jpeg screen photos (not screen
captures) to this message.

I don't read Dutch, but it appears to be a reasonably current AOO
version, maybe 4.1.2 and the status bar indicates that the document has
2 pages.
The printer is shown as being a "ZDesigner GX420d (EPL)" and set for
"Mediatype: Label with gaps".

I assume that the recipient does not necessarily have OO. This being the case,
there are the following options:

- export as PDF

- save in MS Word format [.doc]. This can be opened in either preview [part of
the Mac OS] or Pages [a word processor that will import MS Word] - either part
of the latest Mac OS versions or free from the app store.
