[vchkpw] Off Topic: Virtual FTP Server or web-based file manager?
OK, so it's off-topic, but can anyone recommend an FTP server or web- based file manager that I can deploy on my hosting server that either integrates with vpopmail (like maybe Pure-FTPd) and has a nice interface for managing accounts? I only have two IPs for my server, so multiple clients would share the same FTP server. I'm considering having usernames that include domain names for logging in, and thought that QmailAdmin might be a good interface for managing the FTP accounts. Web may be a better way to go, because FTP is already in use by clients for managing their web content. If I use Pure-FTPd or vsftpd, it will need to be configured for both system users and virtual users. A well-designed, web-based file manager would be a great replacement for FTP. A search on SourceForge didn't turn up many promising leads. Lots of stuff that hasn't been maintained since 2004, or has less than 1000 downloads. Any recommendations? no recommendations, but it's starting to give me ideas... and that's a scary thing when you've been up all night. somebody needs to write a qmail-ish FTP server, one which supports the same checkpassword mechanism that qmail's pop3 server uses. think of an ftp-popup program, which runs a checkpassword program (such as vchkpw), which then runs an ftp-server program. the ftp-server program would have support for the standard commands compiled into it, so it doesn't need to fork out and run ls to handle a dir command from the client, and therefore wouldn't need an elaborate jail directory to be created in order to chroot() a user into their $HOME directory. of course, because it would be able to use vchkpw as a checkpassword program, it would work with any authentication mechanism supported by vpopmail... and therefore be manage-able using any GUI which works with vpopmail. i think i'm going to start reading RFC 959... | John M. Hi, I've been trying to enable SMTP auth using vchkpw with qmail today. The login works fine, but after i issue the rcpt to command over telnet, I get the 421 unable to read controls (#4.3.0) error. I was chatting with Claus here: http://lists.horde.org/archives/sork/Week-of-Mon-20070618/002718.html About using Horde vacation with vpopmail, and at one point he posted a link to his pureftp config that used vpopmail auth properly. Where mine just used MySQL, and didn't account for a table-per-domain, his would work for any situation. Doh, I don't use a patch at all. I use debian packages from http:// debian.iuculano.it/ Perhaps i could modify the source with that patch. Has anyone else noticed spamhaus is down? None of their rbl host names are resolving. I've tried: zen.spamhaus.org sbl.spamhaus.org xbl.spamhaus.org sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org pbl.spamhaus.org We noticed a delay in accepting email and tracked it down to rblsmtpd checks on any of those lists. Ken Jones

I'm sorry. I didn't mean a dns lookup on the hostnames. I meant using rblsmtpd to do the query against their database. Ken Jones No, they are just blocking high volume servers in an effort to make you pay for the service. Although one of my servers is under 2000 messages a day and it's blocked as well. Rick

Neither can we. I just removed their name from our rbl checks because we were seeing some slowdowns. I bet this was the cause... We're currently using bl.spamcop.net and were using sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org. Can anyone suggest a replacement? Have you looked at webmin/usermin? Aside from that, you start looking at blackbox solutions like CPanel. I use Matt Simerson's toaster-watcher.pl script to keep my rbl server list 'live', and I still have sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org in my active list. The fact that I check spamhaus last in my list may have something to do with why it still works for me considering someone's comment that only high volume servers were being blocked, whatever high volume means. I have found that the following list of RBL's works extremely well and use them all in this order on both of those machines: bl.spamcop.net spamsources.fabel.dk list.dsbl.org cbl.abuseat.org sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org Adam
