I'm matching it up to my Hardy featherweight reel and a WF3F line. I do have a question though. With a rod like this for dry fly fishing, is the WF3F line good enough or should I go to a DT2F also? I know the WF is better for distance but Ididn't really get this short rod for distance, just fishing tight spaces? So, would the DT2F be a better line?

Murf, and othersI like this thread. I'm intending to use my canoe a lot this summer (sinceI had my back surgery), and I know many new things have come out in the 28years that I've had it. I used it A LOT when I was younger, and I think Ihad it on every body of water in the state of Wyoming at least once. Thenmy back got too bad to enjoy it any more. It's the 15' Gruman Sport Canoe with the wider transomhttp://www.marathonboat.com/canoes2.htm. It's pretty good on lakes untilthey chop up with wind. That's why I bought a 4hp Evinrude for getting backquicker. Now with the electric motor technologies, I'm thinking about goingelectric. Any experiences there? One does NOT want to get caught on aWyoming lake when the wind comes up- with or without just a paddle.I'm also thinking of drifting the river with it again. It gets
trickierhere. As you know (if you are a canoe-er) the river is always trying to tunthe canoe sideways to the current, especially with the square stern. I canturn it around and paddle it backwards, with the point into the current(which is better) but I don't like striking rocks with the square stern- thestops are quite abrupt. Solo is tougher than with a partner, and three ispretty fun if all take turns with the paddles.I can make an anchoring system like on my pontoon kickboat (which I like forsmaller lakes), for stopping the boat while playing a fish.I'd like to learn to weld aluminum. Does anyone on the list weld aliminum?I'd like to make a bunch of removable accessories of my own design. Onething I like about the sport canoe is that it's wide and stable enough tostand up and fish. I intend to capitalize on that. Outriggers could beapplied for flats-fishing (carping) and would even allow for a short
castingplatform.Appreciate any feedback.DonO- Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]To: vfb@troutnet.comSent: Wednesday, February 09, 2005 10:56 PMSubject: Re: [VFB] rod buildingIn a message dated 2/10/2005 1:36:31 A.M., [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:Ah another canoe FFer... I got skunked on the 29th. I did get one 23" on the 28th. I'm going to wait until the weather warms up to about freezing. The forecast doesn't look too good for a while.
Was that fish you got a brook stock fish that was about gone. I have caught several of them around here in years past. I got two last month in the ponds at 3 forks, but they weren't 30 inches.
Keep in touch and when it gets warmer maybe we can wet a line together. I'll let you do the hiking.

Morning Iain and all, If some of you are wondering about Iains comment, I got a Greenheartrod from him a few years back, 3 piece 15'. Not glass, graphite or bamboo, Greenheart wood. The main reason was that I wanted to see how atraditional wood rod was made, and this thing is a work of art. I still hope to makean Osage rod some day. Anyway, I have only cast this one once, the line wasnot right and the reel way to small to balance it. I need to find, or make, a4 to 4.5 inch large arbor reel for it so as to balance it
properly. Then I will try it out, should be interesting. What I would fish for? Well, I thought that it would be a good rod to try on some lakes, allow to get out further from along the shore, and I think the Cimarron river is pretty open and wide. Would like to even tryit on the White river, behind Tony's house. Places where I could be in one spot, braced, and fish in a fan pattern and cover a lot of water, thenmove down and do it again. As to fish, down here, bass and pan fish along the river, trout when they stock it. The rest of the places I mentioned wouldbe trout. Santa Claus left me a decal for the rear window of my Pathfinder, "THE RISE" showing a rising trout in the ring of a rise. I was quite pleased. (Remember me, the one who suggested that we find a way to have a VFB decal for our fishing

Have any of you on the list heard of such a thing? I may choose to not display my new window decal, because I don't fancy having my rear window smashed in. Re: [VFB] Tom's San Juan Hook

2004-11-06 Thread Dean Larson
Hi Tom
I don't have a problem with that hook, but the catch and release around here claim that it hooks the fish in the top of the mouth and causes the fish to die by puncturing their nerve system.

Then, with those even with the edge of the table (or sticking out on the left where most people clamp their vises for those who don't have a Norvise) I'd also
put one like that on the back, only two layered, with thread holders on the topmost layer and then little boxes (usually 5-6) to put each of the pieces of the fly, hooks, tailing, ribbing, body dub, winging material all lying out in order so one can tie with efficiency. There'd also be a little holder on the upper right with a hole big enough for my tying wax (1.5 inches for Overton's wax) and another for my wide bottle head cement. But..it is a wonderful thing.. One more thing, I'd have a formica or other light colored tile immediately under the tying area of the vise so that when one spills stuff, like head cement, it can be gotten off with out destroying the surface of the table. Re: [VFB] Kokanee in western MT?

2004-10-26 Thread Dean Larson
HI Todd
I don't know where you live in Montana, but there are Kokanee in Georgetown Lake, which is near Anaconda, Montana, There is also Kokanee in Mission Lake which is on the Blackfoot Indian Reservation, Mission Lake is between Cut Bank,Montana and Browning, Montana. The Missouri River below Canyon Ferry Dam did have them, and also below Houser Dam and also the causeway from the Helena, Montana water supply has Kokanee.
The spawn is in full swing and could be about over. Yesterday at Georgetown Lake I caught two that were very black. Not very large, about 11". The brooks are also spawning there. I landed ten brooks.
I caught the Kokanee on a brown crystal bugger. The brooks mostly on egg flies.
 DEanTodd Skibbe [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I was wondering if anyone knows of a place where I can observe (and maybe catch) any koke's doing the spawning thing in western MT. I knowguys fish for themin Colorado, but I have not been able to talk to one person since moving to Montana that has been able to help me. Thanks!

Thanks forthe mental pictures. Jimi Had a great trip in Montana. The weather cooperated almost
perfectly. There's just something about dry fly fishing a river with GlacierNational Park as the background scenery. :o) Caught lots of cutts on parachute flies (rope-dubbed with wingers and scb hackle). Visited a lot of fly shops, gave a few rope-dub clinics, bought a new fly vest (Patagonia), and set upsome trips for next year. Had a ton of fun atv'n with my son and good friend (put 200 miles on the odo). Saw a bull elk up close and personal, but he was gone before Icould get my camera out. Lots of bear poop on the trails, real fresh-looking- lended a little 'edge' to the experience. Had the Swan Mountains as the backdrop one day and Glacier Park the next. Can't say I'm enjoying being back here sitting in front of this computer, other than being back in touch with
my vfb buds. DonO _ Check out Election 2004 for up-to-date election news, plus voter tools and more! http://special.msn.com/msn/election2004.armx
