[VFB] Re: Pautexant special fly pattern

2009-01-25 Thread boosbooksandbargains

Wes: Man, you said it. It makes me wonder how we ever did things before the
internet. I can remember (not fly fishing stuff cause I didn't tie back
then) to order something for example. You had to get a catalog (4-6 WEEKS)
you had to mail in a check or Money Order, then wait for shipping (another
6-8 WEEKS).. By the time you got something you didn't need it anymore..With
the net, you order something via credit card or pay pal, you get the big
brown truck at your door, in three-four DAYS. The internet is GREAT, Chuck

[VFB] Re: True Stories

2009-01-25 Thread Anthony Spezio
OK here is one.
I was doing beginner fly tying classes at a Dept Store in N.J.
This was a 6 week course. I had a husband and wife team sign up along with 10
other students.
I started out with the basics pointing out the materials and tools and how they
are used.
This gentleman just sat quiet. As we progressed through the weeks I noticed he
had a real knack for tying. His flies were top line. He never asked for help or
had any questions.
At the end of the six weeks I commented to him about his flies being so good.
He said he had been tying for 40 years and took the class so his wife would
take it. He said he had not been able to teach her but that I did a good job.
In the classes he has attended, this was one of the best.
My face was red but I was also proud. They joined our tying group and she is a
good fly tyer now.

Hello, VFB.

I'd like to start a thread about something of interest to me, and
hopefully, to some of you.

What stories do you have, that happened, when you were at a fly tying event?

You were either tying your flies, or witnessing another tyer's
presentation. Or expanded, to include the presentations at the
casting pond? Possibilities suggested might be educational,
historical, colorful, or just danged funny.

And they have to be true stories, which has to be a huge challenge,
for fly fishers!

-

Anybody want to start the ball rolling? Just thought of this, and I
don't have anything in mind, or written, of my own. Will do one,
though.

-

Anybody want to start
the ball rolling? Just thought of this, and I
don't have anything in mind, or written, of my own. Will do one,
though.

[VFB] Re:Starting a fly fishing club

2009-01-25 Thread Jimmy D. Moore

Chuck, if you feel proficient enough, you might consider doing a program
at one or more of your Civic Clubs like Rotary, etc. I did this a few
years back, giving a fly tying/fishing demonstration. At the end of the
meeting I had 7 Rotarians come up and ask if I would teach a fly tying
class for them. I did. Upshot is that 5 of the seven are still tying
flies and fly fishing. How do I know this? I'm in that Rotary Club.
You could do a demo and ask any interested folks if they'd like to join
a Fly Fishing club that you're forming. Seems that lots of civic club
members are fly fishers.

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2009-01-25 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
He slept with his fly rod standing in the corner next to his bed. He didn't
bother taking off his shirt and pants. His vest on the bed post and his wading
boots were placed where he could swing off the bed, and like a fireman ram his
feet into them. His fishing hat was by his pillow. The only thing difference
was that he didn't have a pole to slide down to the stream.

[VFB] Re: Danish Fly MAGNUS

2009-01-25 Thread Neville Gosling

There are several versions, one with the bead chain above the hook shank,
one with the bead chain below the hook shank and the bullethead. Fo myself,
I do not like the idea of placing the bead chain at the bend as I like to
keep this area of the hook as clear as possible for maximum hooking ability.
With a couple of beads in the way, I'm not sure that it would hook as well.

You are talking about eyes, whereas back in the 70s when this fly was
developed, I suspect that the weight of the bead chain was the main
consideration and more important than it's appearance as eyes.

Nev,
yes, I found it there, several years ago.
But I'm wondering, why the pattern has the bead chain eyes at the hooks eye.
The pattern should represent a shrimp, therefore I expect the eyes at the
hooks bend, where the feelers are.
Any idea, why they mount the eyes at the patterns 'butt'?

Yep, great fly. I prefer the Polar Magnus, though.

Tony: I wonder if around here, since there are
 PLENTY of
places like Volunteer Fire Dept's and Civic
 Centers that
will rent you rooms by the day, week, month etc
 for things
like tying lessons, or whatever. So, I have been
 wanting to
get up a local club. So, if I bought 4 more say
 Thompson A
vises at about $20 a pop, and ran an ad in the
 paper 6
week fly tying course, limit 6 people, first
 come
first served. Then, the ppl would pay just enough
 to cover
the costs of the building, materials, snacks, etc
 etc.. But
then I'd ask them if they wanted to join a
tying/fishing club, and we'd then have
 fly fishing
lessons at the local City Park lake that I often
 fish. It
might just go over. Or, do the fishing
 class
first, then do the tying class. Or even at the
 same time and
do the fishing right before dark, then move to the
 classroom
to tie, cause the huge civic center is right there
 at the
  lake..Chuck

  OK here is one.
I was doing beginner fly tying classes at
 a Dept
  Store in N.J.
This was a 6 week course. I had a husband
 and wife
team sign up along with 10 other students.
I started out with the basics pointing out
 the
materials and tools and how they are used.
This gentleman just sat quiet. As we
 progressed
through the weeks I noticed he had a real knack
 for tying.
His flies were top line. He never asked for help
 or had any
  questions.
At the end of the six weeks I commented to
 him
about his flies being so good. He said he had been
 tying for
40 years and took the class so his wife would take
 it. He
said he had not been able to teach her but that I
 did a good
job. In the classes he has attended, this was one
 of the
  best.
My face was red but I was also proud. They
 joined
our tying group and she is a good fly tyer now.
