I wrote this just before Christmas 2003. The lack of the fun type
posts we used to share is the very reason you don't see me post to the list.
Today, I have nothing else to do and in trying to ease the pains of Pneumonia,
came across this old post from me to the list. You can beat on me or whatever,
but if I feel this way, I'm sure there are other old timers who now lurk
instead of post.

Wow, the last two days on the VFB have been something to behold.
I've learned s much! I learned that Hans can cast 40 feet just using a
broomstick. I learned that Henk can cast 40 feet with just his hand. I learned
Tony's flight instructor was SNOOPY. I learned that Mark Romero once lived in
a Cop Car. I learned that Patrick's truck blew up. I learned that Mike's
computer crashed. I learned that Bart found a great buy in an Orvis bamboo. I
learned that Allan doesn't like to tie Mayflies. I learned that I can't tie
Tandem flies. I learned that Chris Chapman set a new record, tying three flies
in two hours. I learned a million ways to keep thread from unraveling from a
spool. I learned that Di Soma shops the flower section of Michaels. I learned
that Del is an expert tyer of furled leaders. I learned that Paul Marriner
ain't done yet. I witnessed the NEW Furled Leaders thread dying in just three
days. I withessed the new Spine vs Spline thread only lasting a little over a
day. Boy, I learned a whole lot! I also learned that We're Family !

But the most important thing I learned is that our DUTCH Lowlander
friends, Hans and Henk have a sense of HUMOR after all! :-P

  Have A Great Day!

Letting you all know first. Looking for tyers for this one as it will be my
last for about six months as I start treatment in June.

Anyway we have until 15 Jun to sign up and 30 Aug to complete the flys.

Let's look at some more streamers (warmwater or coldwater)
(trout, gills, steelhead - your decision).

Self-addressed stamped envelops (MANDATORY), toe tags etc (all the normal rules
or guideline) Again for our friends not in the US, send 3-6 extra flys and I
will pay the postage back BUT you still need a self-addressed envelope.

Also will need your email address so I can make a group list of all the tyers.
This will make it easier to keep everyone up to date.

I am off in the AM for a week of trolling for some trophy trout with my Chili
Troll Fly. I will return next Thursday.

Some of the lurkers and newly signed up - get your vises dusted off and get to
tying.

Deserttrout is out.

May your GOD be your fishing partner.

[VFB] Re: ffisher tyer or collector?

2009-08-20 Thread J Balmer

I own a few pair, but I could easily use a razor instead. Generally, I use
the edge to cut thread rather than snipping. About the only time I use the
scissors as a scissors is when I'm cutting hair or fur off a skin. I use a
razor blade when I'm shaping packed hair or foam. As to being designed for
tying, as long as they're sharp fit your hand comfortably, does it really
matter?

I myself own appr 15 scissors so far. Get some from ff shops (Slick and

[VFB] Re: ffisher tyer or collector?

2009-08-20 Thread Michael Bliss
I have used surgical scissors. I also have an expensive German pair that
the seamstresses use. But my favorite one costs $1 at the swap meet here
(like a flea market) They are the squeeze type. They are quite sharp with
nice pointed tips. And when they go - well they served their purpose.

Yep, both the Jazz Blues Fests are huge. The stage in Grant Park is much
better now acoustically than it used to be. Don't think I'll get to perform
there, but you never know.

Self-addressed stamped envelops (MANDATORY), toe tags etc (all the normal
rules or guideline) Again for our friends not in the US, send 3-6 extra flys
and I will pay the postage back BUT you still need a self-addressed
envelope.

Also will need your email address so I can make a group list of all the
tyers. This will make it easier to keep everyone up to date.

I am off in the AM for a week of trolling for some trophy trout with my
Chili Troll Fly. I will return next Thursday.

Some of the lurkers and newly signed up - get your vises dusted off and get
to tying.

Deserttrout is out.

Anvil scissors are made specifically for fly tying. They're made in
by the Vogel brothers in their machine shop in Columbus, Indiana.
They are both fly fishers and fly tyers (although they have been so
busy making scissors and vises that they have little time to enjoy
their sport). They also make scissors designed specifically for
special fields, including hair dressers and dog groomers.

I believe Slick scissors were originally designed for surgeons, but
I'm not sure. I think that's why they were originally called Dr.
Slick.

[VFB] Re: ffisher tyer or collector?

2009-08-20 Thread Martin Westbeek

Got 6 scissors or so. I bought my favorite pair 10 years ago from a fellow
tier at a show in Germany, and it is still going strong. The other one I use
most of the time is a tung.carbide scissors. Also have one pair of surgical
scissors I swapped with a surgeon for a dozen of sea trout flies. Very nice
for delicate work.
I want my scissors to be sharp and stay sharp, and I want to be able to keep
them in my hand (or on my middle finger) when I tie.
I have noticed that I have become so used to tying this way with both my fav
scissors that I'm all thumbs when I use different scissors.

As for fly tying material: collector - me?
:-)

How many scissors do you have and where do you get them?
I myself own appr 15 scissors so far. Get some from ff shops (Slick and
Tiemco), but own in the meantime a couple which I get on fleemarkets.
Some of them seems to be surgical instruments. Maybe I'm more or less a
collector. Own over 100 bottles of wine, hm back to ffing

Has anybody insight into scissormaker? Are these instruments really
designed for tying, or are they selling surgical instruments as ff tools?

I wrote this just before Christmas 2003.  The lack of
the fun type posts we used to share is the very reason you don't see me post
to the list. Today, I have nothing else to do and in trying to ease the pains
of Pneumonia, came across this old post from me to the list.  You can beat
on me or whatever, but if I feel this way, I'm sure there are other old
timers who now lurk instead of post.

  JIMMY D

Wow, the last two days on the VFB have been something to behold.  I've
learned s much!  I learned that Hans can cast 40 feet just
using a broomstick.  I learned that Henk can cast 40 feet with
just his hand. I learned Tony's flight instructor was SNOOPY.  I
learned that Mark Romero once lived in a Cop Car. I learned
that Patrick's truck blew up.  I learned that Mike's computer
crashed. I learned that Bart found a great buy in an Orvis
bamboo.  I learned that Allan doesn't like to tie Mayflies.
I learned that I can't tie Tandem flies.  I learned that Chris
Chapman set a new record, tying three flies in two hours.  I learned
a million ways to keep thread from unraveling from a spool. I learned
that  Di Soma shops the flower section of Michaels. I learned
that Del  is an expert tyer of furled leaders. I learned
that  Paul Marriner ain't done yet. I witnessed the NEW Furled
Leaders thread dying in just three days.  I withessed the new Spine
vs Spline thread only lasting a little over a day.  Boy, I
learned a whole lot! I also learned that We're Family !

But the most important thing I learned is that our DUTCH Lowlander friends,
Hans and Henk have a sense of HUMOR after all! :-P

  Have A Great Day!

I have a 1.25 x 10 lg. dia. ceramic pump plunger from a glycol pump, and it

as a factory serrated scissors.

Wow, Salt Lake City...that was like a decade ago, wasn't it? I was tying for

Whenecer I see Anvil or Dyna-King at their booths, I lend them a Fantasy Fly of

I just checked the pair I usually use are Dr. Slicks. The only problem I ever
had was when they got knocked onto a concrete floor I had to regrind the
tips. I had a pair of Anvils, but I couldn’t find them. I’m guessing the wacky
Italian broad has them w/ her basket weaving tools…

Don,
Not downgrading DR Slick but I had a problem with them These were the early
ones. The pivot point kept loosening up and the scissors would not cut. It was
a hassle so I just put them in the junk box. At the same show I had the Anvil
scissors ground for me, I talked to the Slick People at their booth. They said
they had corrected that problem and gave me a set of scissors. I am real
pleased with my Anvil scissors that I never did use the Slicks.. Maybe I should
get them out when I start tying again.

I like both my Anvils and my Dr. Slicks. If I had to choosegood thing I
don't. ;o)

I have a 1.25 x 10 lg. dia. ceramic pump plunger from a glycol pump, and it
works great with a little oil as a sharpener. When I get to the serrated
scissors, that's a little tricky. I sharpen them up and then use the roughest
Lanski stone to make one hard pass to roughen the edge, so it's almost as good
as a factory serrated scissors.

Wow, Salt Lake City...that was like a decade ago, wasn't it? I was tying for
Dr. Tom Whiting at his booth.

Whenecer I see Anvil or Dyna-King at their booths, I lend them a Fantasy Fly of
some sort- usually a Flexo-fish or a mouse, for a draw fly. Hardest part is
getting it back.

lmao...J.B., you funny..

Actually, when I can't find my Anvil's, I look in my brides sewing basket. Last
year she had used my Ice Anvils to cut gunny sacks and guess what - yep -
can't cut thread now!. Gotta love 'em!

My choice is Anvil Hands down.
I have about 20 pair and use the Anvil 99% of the time. They ground a special
pair for me at one of the Dealers shows in SLC some years ago.
Come to think of it, that was the year I met Don O and Jerry Goldsmith at that
show.

I have two pair of Thimpson Ice.
Two of the little skinney Gingher's that you squeeeze together to put back into
the 1/2 by 5 plastic case.
I also have a pair of Fiskars that you slip your ring finger into a loop and
just hold them in the palm of your hand.
I use the Thompson Ice the most.

got bout 25 pair.half dozen of those are total crap...but i keep 'em
round for cutting wire, etc.
i've got from junk to the BEST..like those you see Mike Radencich using
in his video...don't really like those that much.
my favorite are good ole' Doc Slick.specially the VERY FINEST NEEDDLE POINT
typecan't
get along without those.they've saved my ass countless times when it
comes to my trademark tiny heads. unfortunately, i have to get a new pair
fairly often.because the tips are so fine they are very easily damaged.
but once a year or two aint so bad...no biggie.fly tying's
not for tightwads anyway...you wanna be a tightwad,
buy your flies..

Oh no! Dr. D was experimenting in his lab with quantum flytying.
And guess what happened!
Next week's fly showed up this week! The time bounce has happened!

So strange, that quantum stuff!
I'm going to experiment with quantum fishics this weekend. My fish will be as
big
as I want it to be.

Jim- Count me in for streamers. I will probably do a pike type. If that
is too big for a bug swap let me know and I can downsize. Hey I love your
summertime bug swaps. Good luck on that trophy trip. Dail

Letting you all know first. Looking for tyers for this one as it will be
my last for about six months as I start treatment in June.

Anyway we have until 15 Jun to sign up and 30 Aug to complete the flys.

Let's look at some more streamers (warmwater or coldwater)
(trout, gills, steelhead - your decision).

Self-addressed stamped envelops (MANDATORY), toe tags etc (all the normal
rules or guideline) Again for our friends not in the US, send 3-6 extra flys
and I will pay the postage back BUT you still need a self-addressed envelope.

May your GOD be your fishing partner.
