[VFB] Re: ffisher tyer or collector?
I own a few pair, but I could easily use a razor instead. Generally, I use the edge to cut thread rather than snipping. About the only time I use the scissors as a scissors is when I'm cutting hair or fur off a skin. I use a razor blade when I'm shaping packed hair or foam. As to being designed for tying, as long as they're sharp fit your hand comfortably, does it really matter? I have used surgical scissors. I also have an expensive German pair that the seamstresses use. But my favorite one costs $1 at the swap meet here (like a flea market) They are the squeeze type. They are quite sharp with nice pointed tips. And when they go - well they served their purpose. [VFB] Re: ffisher tyer or collector?
Has anybody insight into scissormaker? Are these instruments really designed for tying, or are they selling surgical instruments as ff tools? Rene Anvil scissors are made specifically for fly tying. They're made in by the Vogel brothers in their machine shop in Columbus, Indiana. They are both fly fishers and fly tyers (although they have been so busy making scissors and vises that they have little time to enjoy their sport). They also make scissors designed specifically for special fields, including hair dressers and dog groomers. I believe Slick scissors were originally designed for surgeons, but I'm not sure. I think that's why they were originally called Dr. Slick. a. -- Allan Fish Greenwood, IN afi...@sbcglobal.net --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the VFB Mail group. [VFB] Re: ffisher tyer or collector?
Got 6 scissors or so. I bought my favorite pair 10 years ago from a fellow tier at a show in Germany, and it is still going strong. The other one I use most of the time is a tung.carbide scissors. Also have one pair of surgical scissors I swapped with a surgeon for a dozen of sea trout flies. Very nice for delicate work. I want my scissors to be sharp and stay sharp, and I want to be able to keep them in my hand (or on my middle finger) when I tie. I have noticed that I have become so used to tying this way with both my fav scissors that I'm all thumbs when I use different scissors. As for fly tying material: collector - me? :-) Mart - Original Message - From: Rene Zillmann rene.zillm...@t-online.de To: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, August 20, 2009 6:57 PM Subject: [VFB] ffisher tyer or collector? I've learned s much! I learned that Hans can cast 40 feet just using a broomstick. I learned that Henk can cast 40 feet with just his hand. I learned Tony's flight instructor was SNOOPY. I learned that Mark Romero once lived in a Cop Car. I learned that Patrick's truck blew up. I learned that Mike's computer crashed. I learned that Bart found a great buy in an Orvis bamboo. I learned that Allan doesn't like to tie Mayflies. I learned that I can't tie Tandem flies. I learned that Chris Chapman set a new record, tying three flies in two hours. I learned a million ways to keep thread from unraveling from a spool. I learned that Di Soma shops the flower section of Michaels. I learned that Del is an expert tyer of furled leaders. I learned that Paul Marriner ain't done yet. I witnessed the NEW Furled Leaders thread dying in just three days. I withessed the new Spine vs Spline thread only lasting a little over a day.
