I have an idea for 10 tiers.  Tie an easy fly design that I give- a rope-dub 
bugger pattern, and each swapper ties one color of it 10 times. (I’ll post a 
collage of a wide range of styles)

Each color can be a different size and embellished with flash, eyes, cones- 
whatever, but the bugger basic style must be maintained.  Since there are 
combination of colors, the selection would be infinite.  Natural furs count as 
colors. This would allow big bass buggers, trout buggers, panfish buggers, even 
pike and saltwater buggers. A chili-pepper would even pass.  But each color or 
combo must be by one tier, so there’s no repeats. I will post a picture palette 
of styles and colors to give some food for thought, and then we tie one on. 
Then we get to tying actual flies.  (TUI flies are still acceptable)

If this one runs over the number, that’s fine, since variations are endless and 
buggers work for everything.  I have salt-water rope-dub jack-buggers that are 
just killer in Florida bays. (Ask Jerry Goldsmith)  Just a rope-dub (highly 
segmented, tapered) bugger tied with bite tippet with flash green and blue 
materials. I thought a new twist would be to post your pilot-pattern on VFB for 
a comment session to get thoughts.  Then if a VFBer wants to join or just post 
their comment or even their version (photo), that would make for a real fun 
swap with lots of participation that wouldn’t be time-consuming at all. Any

I think almost all of use on the VFB  are in the same boat!

Me, IKEA wardrobe full of materials, plus what's in my tying desk, four tying 
vises, numerous bobbins, tools thread etc.  I probably don't want know what 
I've invested in fly tying.

That said, it's a hobby for me and well worth the investment!.

[VFB] Nor Vise help

Hi All;

Received and installed standard jaws on my Nor vise, big difference. Studied 
Norm's videos but,  I'm still struggling to use it.

A couple questions:

How do you figure out when the  bobbin is set up correctly?

Tried using the vise to load bobbins, seemed very difficult, cordless drill 
works ok.

When touch dubbing, how long does it take for the thread to grab the dubbing?

Any suggestions on a pattern to master some techniques?

Anyone use the dubbing block, if so opinions?

Oh, by the way, purchased the saltwater jaw nor vise with three Nor bobbins and 
six spools $215.00.  I think it was a pretty good deal, even purchasing the 
standard jaws separately, I still got a better/cheaper deal the the basic setup 
on line.

Placed an order for the standard jaws this morning.  Norm emailed me about it, 
I explained that I have the saltwater jaws and he made sure I ordered the

Hi All;

Received my Nor vise yesterday,  bolted it to my tying bench, loaded a couple 
spools with thread and preceded to give it a go.
It definitely takes some getting used to.  Mine came with the saltwater jaws a 
bit of a pia to get used to and hard to get anything less than a size 6 
streamer hook to hold(standard jaws on the way).  Also a bit of a learning 
curve for the Nor bobbins.  

Any suggestions on what to tie with the larger jaws?

Just finished watching the video, very informative and I think Tim being a 
novice demonstrated the Nor vise at a much slower pace than Norm.  I think the 
slower pace allows beginner's such as soon to be me,understand some of the nor 
vise & Nor bobbin techniques a little better.

Danvise: a remarkable hunk of plastic that works quite well.  I especially 
liked it converted to straight jaws for streamer patterns

Mayfly:  a real bargain and really good for tying smaller patterns.

Renzetti Clouser:  great travelling vise, breaks down well and the straight 
jaws are great for streamers.  Angled jaws work well for smaller stuff.

I need more Vices or is it Vises?

The one I'm buying has the saltwater jaws, never used and very reasonable 
price, cheaper than buying a factory new one an adding a set of jaws.

[VFB] Surgery

Hi All;

May be a while before I start tying again.  I have drainage from my elbow 
surgery in October that worked its way out of my elbow about a month ago and 
won't stop.  Doctor is going to open it up this afternoon and see what's up. 
Hopefully it's something  minor and all signs point to that but, must be 
prepared for serious infection or my body rejecting my implant.

Will know when I wake up later today.

Tie the feather to the hook shank, attached hackle pliers to other end of 
feather.  Hold the feather up and perpendicular to the hook shank.  Moisten you 
fingertips then stroke the barbs towards the back of the hook. Also, pinch the 
barbs between your fingertips where they attach to the feather stem/quill so 
the individual barbs bend towards the back of the hook.  Proceed with wrapping 
the feather around the hook shank while stroking barbs back.  If they still 
stick out away from the hook shank more than you want, you can wrap over the 
barbs where they attach to the hook shank, the more wraps you place towards the 
back end of the hook, the tighter the barbs will lay against the hook shank.

Hopefully upping the prices doesn't ruin this event (though I suspect it 
will!). If they up the prices too much, the vendors will up thier prices making 
it less of a bargain thus reducing sales and could create a downwardly 
spiralling effect.

Do you know if the IFITS will have pricing increases?

I have a friend who's a little older and already semi retired that I'm planning 
a summer 2015 retirement fishing trip to East Grand lake in Maine.  Both our 
families vacationed together a few years back, I caught an insane amount of 
smallies  on that trip.

Thrilled to here your health is improving! 

Been busy doing projects around the house, retaining walls, extending patio, 
building a wood fired pizza oven for wife, and cutting and splitting firewood.  
That and my wife decided I need to get my aerobic fitness up so we've been 
bicycling  at least twice a week.

I have been lurking and reading messages though.

An icedub swap sounds fun!
