Re: [VFB] Bobbin
I am amazed that you could not get the hang of either the Ekich or Novise bobbins..all you have to do is let them rewind and, when they pull really tight, on the Ekich, you simply release the spool and put it back on the spindle again. With the NorVise bobbin, you just remember it has an automatic clutch so when you finish tying, hang it up or put a hackle pliers on the end so it doesn't have the thread pull back in. On the Norvise, you must wrap the thread once around the leg to have it wind back properly. Wish you'd have sold me your unusable bobbins at such a great price. I tie using only these two. Re: [VFB] Bobbin
Check out the Norvise bobbin and Ekich automatic bobbin. I have both and use both. The Novise automatically rewinds, but you do have to remember that and hang it or put a hackle pliers on it when you are done with the fly. You have to rewind your bobbin thread on the round bobbin but it fits the hand nicely. The Ekich bobbin is neat in that it will accept a spool of thread directly to the bobbin without having to rewind the thread thus keeping the same tension on the thread that the manufacturer did. It has the disadvantage that it does not have an automatic clutch, so when the bobbin winds tight, you have to flick the thread spool up, let it rewind and simply push the thread spool back again. You can find both of them on the internet and, as previously stated, I have and love both. I couldn't even think of tying without an automatic bobbin..it is the saving grace for arthritic hands. Re: [VFB] Bobbin
Thanks to all for the great help and answers. Ain't this list great? If any one out there has either of these two bobbins and do not like or do not use them, I would be willing to buy them. Please let me know. Sent from my iPad Thank You, Alan Di Somma Phoenix, AZ. Some mistakes are just too much fun to make only once. On May 18, 2013, at 5:12 AM, Joyce M Westphal joyce...@gmail.com wrote: Check out the Norvise bobbin and Ekich automatic bobbin.
Alan, The bobbin I have switched to several years ago is the Rite Bobbin, and may not be the one you are looking for but. I enjoy placing a regular sized spool on it and not having to cobble fill from an odd sized one. the two big things I enjoy are the ceramic tip (I sometimes get a bit heavy handed) and it is easily adjusted for tension. Really a big plus to me. If interested, please contact me off list. Alan, This should give you what you need: http://www.automaticbobbin.com/ I have one. It has its good and weak points. Nicely made, it works as advertised but it's not balanced, which is awkward if you use split thread techniques a lot. Spinning the bobbin makes it wobble so gou must guide the thread and the tube if you need to spin the bobbin. Alan, Try it, you will like it far better than any auto bobbin. I tried to tie with the Erich bobbin and found it not good for my usage. Re: [VFB] Bobbin
Thanks a lot Mart. That is the kind of info I was looking for. I tie a lot of big flies for bass and pike, so I do have to spin the bobbin quite a few times to complete a fly. I also put half hitches in at every tie in point so I usually have to rewind the bobbin a lot. I usually don't split the thread to install dubbing! So being offset doesn't come in to play for me. Denny Denny, the choice of RIte, Norbobbin or Ekich bobbin is a matter of personal preference. I was given one of Norm's bobbins by a friend. It did take a few tries to get used to putting the cap on the end before cutting the thread (if you don't, it rewinds itself completely and then you have to rethread it). I now like it so well I really don't care to try any other kind. It's a shame there isn't some place where a person could sit down and try out all three before they decide which one to buy. I'm glad to hear the Rite bobbin works well for you. Best to you. Al -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VFB Mail group. [VFB] Bobbin holder for sewing machine size spools?
Hi VFB! A question: I am in the market for a fly tying bobbin holder that is meant to handle those small stainless steel spools made for sewing machines. In looking over the various manufacturers' catalogs, I see a confusing array of bobbin holders: some labeled small or midge but none saying specifically that a sewing machine spool can be held by these without some wire bending, Rube Goldberg inventiveness. Budget is also a consideration. Ceramic tips would also be nice. What do you recommend as a value-priced bobbin holder meant for the small sewing machine spools? Any other alternatives or suggestions other than going that route? Thanks, Wes Wada Bend, Oregon -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VFB Mail group. Re: [VFB] Bobbin holder for sewing machine size spools?
Some years ago I bought a set of spools with a holder at a FF show in N.Y. It had 8 bobbins and a mini holder in a plastic box. I think it was less than 10.00. They might still be available at some shops. It was a name company but I don't remember it off hand. It is buried in one of my plastic tubs.
