Hi DonO;

Something I'd like to have but don't necessarily need.

Seriously considering a Norvise. It's something I promised myself I'd get
some day.

Thanks everyone for all the ideas, and if any Nor vise owners can let me know
all the great things they can and do use thiers for, please let me know.

Alan,

I have no experience with the Eicht. See Joyce's note from earlier.

One very minor drawback to the Norbobbin is the learning phase -
learning to be sure the little 'cap' has the thread locked down before
you cut it off the hook. The rewind mechanism works VERY well.

After a couple of frustrating tying sessions, it becomes totally
automatic.

Of course if you still had your Norvise, you wouldn't need the cap.

Re: [VFB] Thinking of buying myself something to clear me up

2016-04-30 Thread Phxflytyer
I guess it is all a matter of taste.
I had a Norvise and hated it from the get go.
Gave it away and never regretted it.
The only part of that is that I have since learned that you must wrap the
thread around the leg of the bobbin two times for it to work properly.
I have been thinking of getting an automatic bobbin, either a Nor-bobbin or the
Eicht?

I sprang for a C bobbin that cost a few dollars but use it more than any of
my other bobbins. It just feels so solid and quality made, that I don't regret
ever buying it.

Re: [VFB] Thinking of buying myself something to clear me up

2016-04-30 Thread Don Ordes
Wayne,
If you tie a lot of flies ‘in the round’, meaning that most of the tie is
via wrapping materials around the shank, then the Norvise is great to have. If
you tie flies that don’t need rotating while tying, the feature will not mean
much.
Most of my flies are tied as stacked materials, so I rarely have to rotate
the hook. And when I do, it’s mostly to see how the bottom looks, not to
actually tie. I learned to tie with my bare fingers and a pair of scissors. So
any tool to me at that time would have been a luxury.

Wayne,

IF you get the Nor-vise, be sure to get at least one or two
Nor-bobbins. They go hand-in-hand. Watch Norm's videos and you can see
how they work so well together.

I bought a used Nor-vise and am still getting acclimated. My main
problem is height - or should I say my lack there-of. The 8-foot bench
I tie on was raised up 4" for my wife to use as a cutting table back
when she was doing a lot of sewing. The Norvise is a tall vise, and
with my rotator cuff problem, I can only hold my arms up that high long
enough to tie a couple or three flies when my shoulder starts burning.
If I ever get a lower table, I think I'll really like it.

As far as the Nor-bobbins, I love 'em.

2016-04-30 Thread 'Wayne Blake-Hedges' via VFB Mail
Hi DonO;
Something I'd like to have but don't necessarily need. Seriously considering  a
Norvise.  It's something I promised myself I'd get some day.  Thanks everyone
for all the ideas,  and if any Nor vise owners can let me know all the great
things they can and do use thiers for, please let me know.

2016-04-30 Thread Don Ordes
Wayneb,

What do you consider a luxury?
Luxury can mean expensive, or over-the-budget, or more than what you really
need- or all three.

What’s worth it to get the most use out of. What about a nice tying station?
Or a nice camera for photos?

Re: [VFB] Thinking of buying myself something to clear me up

2016-04-30 Thread Joyce M Westphal
You don't need the dubbing kit. All you need to do the very same thing is
two wire tooth kitty brushing brushes available in any pet store. Use them
like wool cards against each other, wire teeth to wire teeth, with the bits
of yarn and sparkle in between, and for about $10.00 you have your dubbing
kit in hand. I use this all the time. Works great.
The Regal Revolution is a great vice, but it doesn't spin as the Norvise
vise does. I have both, but find the Norvise superior. Check out both. Jyce

I love my Ekich bobbin, but I've been eyeing the Regal Revolution and the
Custom Dubbing Blending kit that Hareline has. God knows I don't need
anymore dubbing, but it would be one of those luxury items that would be
cool to have to play around with. I guess it depends on your budget.

Look at the Faruk Ekich bobbin. I like it and the Norbobbin, each having
advantages. Norbobbin is automatic but you do have to remember to put a
clamp on the thread or hang it or the thread sucks in. The Ekich bobbin has
the big advantage of accepting spools just as they come from the store, no
rewinding, but the disadvantage of not being automatic so when the spring
gets tight, you must quickly lift the thread and put the spool back on.
But, I love them both, especially the $70.00 one of a black nylon type
