Hey Steve!
First, I'd like to say that I really like your vlog. It's obvious that you have video training. Yours is a better quality than a lot of them out there. I only recently set up my first vlog. I'm still learning a lot.
Secondly,I tried to get to the site that you posted for the travel channel thing but it said it wasn't available. I'm not sure if anyone else has had trouble as well, but I thought I'd let you know.

Re: [videoblogging] European VloggerCon Important Update!

2005-07-28 Thread R. Kristiansen

Hey all,

1) What Gabe puts together on Sept 9-11 will be a massive boost in our
visibility to Them (mainstream media, the professionals). It also
helps out Gabe's company, incidentally, which is fine.

2) What Duncan and myself will put together on Sept 16-18 will be a
different beast. Not completely different, we will not be
Anti-Corporate. But it will not so much be about us talking to them,
us posing for pictures from some CNN/BBC/whatnot journalist, but
rather us talking to each other.

I disagree with seeing 'the second weekend' as just a party. We can
have some pretty good discussions among ourselves, and we don't need
to consider the 16-18 event as merely some socializing backrubbing
thing. We Will have a massive party saturday night (17th), but there
will be a programme, and those missing out on The Big IBC Weekend or
who are not interested in that will still have fun, and be able to
learn from each other, and share experience.

I will myself be there on 16th-18th, and I hope you will too.

I don't know what would work best for Rocketboomers, big media event
or meeting some other vloggers. If you can, come to Europe for the
entire ten days. Plan some business meetings in the weekdays, attend
IBC, make a big splash, do some strange european newspapers like El
Pais or Der Spiegel, and then second weekend let's have a vlog-party
unlike any other.

 It's not mutually exclusive.

Your right there. I'd like to be able to download the best of some
radio shows that I don't want to listen to live. I'm already spoiled
with TiVo. Glad to see some radio stations are podcasting some of
their highlights.

Right now I only subscribe to and download 10 podcasts. The good thing
is that only one of them Adam Curry's Daily Source code is daily.

Video blogs are another thing though, In FireANT I subscribe to over
100. Good thing all of them aren't daily. Right now I've got 48

I think the Travel Channel vlog show is a good hybrid. Personally, I
 was entertained and I
see how I can use THEIR work to evangelize OUR work and ideals. So
 what if it doesn't
have all our 'rules and regulations' for meeting the technical

OK, I just subscribed because I TRUST your suggestion. BTW, on TiVo
it's FIVE Takes, not 5 Takes.

[videoblogging] New Vlog: Collaborative Documentary on Pre-War MSM failures

2005-07-28 Thread Kent Bye

Greetings everyone: My name is Kent Bye, and I'm working on an open
source, investigative documentary about how the television news media
became an uncritical echo chamber to the countdown towards war in Iraq.

And the collaborative tools and techniques that I use to produce the
film will hopefully provide some viable alternatives to the diet of
infotainment currently being served up by the mass media.

We've interviewed 68 people over the last year about where the media is
at and where it's going, and I'm in the process of open sourcing the
text of all of these interviews in order to further explore options for
both large-scale and smaller peer-to-peer collaboration.

Anyway, I lay out my vision in my first vlog entry -- with links to
supplemental blog postings in the text transcript.
http://www.echochamberproject.com/vlog01

Features: Jay Rosen, Dan Gillmor, Doc Searls, Jonathan Landay, Pamela
Hess, Bill Plante, Halley Suitt, Marilyn Schlitz and Kent Bye.

Look forward to hearing your feedback and insights!

Thanks,
-Kent Bye.

[videoblogging] Re: CPU cannot handle h264

2005-07-28 Thread Steve Watkins

Wow that is one misinformed article, so wrong.

If they actually said what resolution of h264 footage is too much for
the CPU to handle, they would be closer to accurate. Certain
exceedinly high HD resolution clips will struggle on certain machines,
but not the latest fastest CPUs when used with the right h264 playback
software.

For, right now, Quicktime 7 PC Preview does not do a great h264
playback job, but its a bug somewhere, rather than a real lack of CPU
power. My not-a-dual-core AMD64 PC can encode h264 faster than my iMac
G5, so Id expect it should theoretically be able to decode it faster
too. Using an alternative to QT7, Nero Showtime, seems to confirm
this, as higher res HD 264 playback much smoother using that software
than QT7, same PC.

I think I'll have to write to the author of that article, otherwise
its supporting marchitecture of graphics card assisted decoding which
isnt actually necessary for many faster PCs. Theres nothing wrong with
shifting some decoding to the GPU, except historically the marketing
of such graphics card features has been more prominent than the
features themselves, they always make it sound more important, and
more of a performance gain, than it has ever ended up being in real
world conditions with real software.

Wow. That's all I can say.

I read it yesterday. The last addition Andrew added is a zinger! Way
to stick it to Rosenblum. People like him are basically snake oil
salesmen in my mind. The part that's so upsetting about being on the
forefront of a movement is how binary people are. This will replace
that, this is better than that, when I'm so much more likely to see the
grey than the black and the white. The VJ model is excellent, but
there's no reason to replace all your two-man crews with one-man crews.
There's no reason the VJ concept can't be adapted to a man crew concept
but with a cheaper production model. I just don't see the revolution in
what he's doing. So he's reduced the equipment cost from millions to
thousands? Big deal. I can fit the computing power it took to take us
to the moon in a wristwatch. Making things smaller and cheaper is
inevitable, and he's selling it like he's revolutionizing publishing,
when in reality the revolution in publishing is not the fact that anyone
can create cheaply, because frankly it's always been decently affordable
to create (although cheaper is better), but the lock has always been in
distribution. It was cost prohibitive to get your art and your content
to people who would want to see and people who would pay to see it.
Andrew, you're spot on, but I probably don't need to tell you that
because you already know I usually agree with you.

like I said in my email, I don't know that reducing TV News production

self-publishing. For instance, while the Travel Channel thing is cool

that their profit margins are signficantly higher than a better produced

I think you're right Josh. Half of my videos have the reference
links and I never had a problem with them. Plus I don't think you
really have a choice if you're using the Archive.

I just wrote a post on this at http://freevlog.org/wordpress/

something i have long been wanting to try
ever see those HBO segues where they take quick clips of various
characters from all the shows and stream them inside of a conversation

not the easiest task... would take time, but the end result would rock.

what we need is a way to open up a new win with a list of all thoe
vloggers in that country/state/city/town.
and a marker that sais how many vloggers are in that area.
maybe context menus would help here.
all i know is, i think its cool to look at for a visual
interpretation, but i never use it to actually find vloggers.

does google maps allow for this type of extensibility? i havent read the api.

ok 'never say never'
i have found cool vlogs.
but i dont want to sway from the issue i think you understand how
eventually, this overlapping of markers can be counter-intuitive. so,
just shooting out ideas on how it can be improved. afterall, the
enticing thing is that its a map... and i'd love for the map itself to
get better as the community grows. just looking beyond the curve.

This is all a catch 22. Considering the are only 200 total, I'm not

That being said, search functionality is being improved. I should be
