I ping two places: Ping-o-matic and a Danish blogging directory. I think

[videoblogging] Media School in Bangalore India

2005-08-24 Thread vee4ru

Dear friends,

As you know one of the biggest problems today is that Indian
journalists are not always proud of their own culture and roots and
as result tend to have a very negative outlook on India, which in
turn influences western correspondents posted in India.

It is therefore very important that we train a new generation of
Indian journalists. It is for this purpose that we started a new
school of journalism in Bangalore called the Sri Sri Center
for Media studies.

There, we teach the best of journalistic knowledge, both print and
electronic, along with classes (which I take myself) on Indian
history, the ideal of true journalism and a little bit coaching in
pranayama and meditation these two ancient Indian sciences which
impart a good and intuitive mind.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of competition both within India
as well as Bangalore, and schools such as the Asian school of
journalism, sponsored by the newspaper the Hindu and the BBC, which
form journalists in the old secular/Marxist mould, have much more
students and funds than we do.

Now what we need is students and this is where you can help. For
Indians residing in India, I must emphasize that a journalistic
career is very rewarding not only in view that you get to travel
a lot, meet interesting people, but also that it is one of the
highest seva you can do for India, as journalists today are the
most important people in the world - even the politicians are afraid
of them !

It is time that all of you Indian parents start thinking about
other careers for your children than doctors or software
engineers ! For NRI¹s, we see today that foreign correspondents
based in India are often very hostile to our ideals.

If you could send some of your children, whether they are first,
second or third generation South Africans/Americans/British/ Fijians
etc, to our school, we would coach them and when they go back to
their country of residence, they can enter mainstream newspapers
and after acquiring home experience, they could ask to be posted
to India, having a natural advantage by being of an Indian origin
and hopefully speaking Indian languages.

In a few years time, the entire India coverage abroad could
see a very important shift. At the moment we only offer a
one year post graduation course, but eventually we will have a
three years complete graduate course. Next session is end of
September and we need 35 students to break even and not lose
money as we have done the last three years.

The course fees are one hundred thousand rupees and we will make sure
your children get an internship (or even a job for those who wish) in
mainstream Indian newspapers/TV channels.

And, a feature that is part of the Apple OPML editor, which I
recently noticed and really like, is a seperate rss update button.
Because usually when you post, you might want to make some changes
once you see how it looks in context with your site, and you dont
want blo, moe and any ol techno cashing your mistakes.

So ping o matic can be nice. I have a bookmark button on my browser,
so I can simply hit the button, then hit enter, because the site
likes my cookie. Doesnt seem to work as an added feed in Moveable
Type which allows you to auto-ping any sites you want when posting.

For instant gratification. If you're using Feedburner you ping them when
you post a new entry. That way they'll update your feed instantly instead
of whenever their robot decides to check for updates. Same thing with
other services like Technorati, Pubsub etc. Letting them know you've
updated means you get included in searches faster.

Yes, this is absolutely true. You need the mpeg-2 component installed
in order to handle mpeg-2 files properly. With it, you can import
mpeg-2 files into final cut and edit them -- no problem, no need to
demux (which is quite something, considering only one out of four
frames is actually a real frame!) Without that component, you are in a
jam, and I think you can't even really make DVDs properly. That fact
drives me nuts at my university when the people who install the
software on all the editing stations don't know what they are doing and
don't install either the mpeg-2 component or quicktime pro (even though
both are paid for in the Final Cut licenses they have). I've designed
whole classes worth of curriculum depending on these tools, only to
find out the machines aren't equipped... Also in Dec 2003 / Jan 2004
the mpeg-2 component suddenly expired without any notice. I think Apple
forgot they'd put a timer on the think, and I was editing late into the
night on a huge deadline, cutting DV and raw mpeg-2 footage together
with no problem (final cut is really sweet) -- but suddenly all my
mpeg-2 files disappeared. I could not figure it out -- until several
days later scanning the web, I found people in an uproar. Apple
released a new version / a patch within a week or two and we were all
back up and running. That's when i really began to understand that
there's this little thing that gets installed with DVD Studio Pro
that's kind of important if you are using mpeg-2 footage.

Re: [videoblogging] Media School in Bangalore India

2005-08-24 Thread Deirdre Straughan

IMO, any organization that sets out to teach journalism from a
religio-spiritual bias is potentially dangerous. The world needs truly
objective reporting, and/or a variety of viewpoints, but not
professional reporting informed by religion. India, especially, does
not need any more religion to add into its already explosive mix.
What, in the view of this organization, is the ideal of true
journalism ?

I also dispute M. Gautier's facts as expressed in this letter.

I have just returned from three weeks in India during which I read
newspapers and magazines and watched some of India's dozens of TV
channels, many of them news in various Indian languages. This does not
give me a comprehensive view, admittedly, but I wasn't seeing the
negative outlook he reports. I saw standard journalistic reporting on
problems that really exist (e.g. the disasters in the wake of Mumbai's
floods), certainly, but there was also a lot of celebration of India
and what it has to be proud of, especially in the light of
Independence Day celebrations on August 15th. I also saw plenty of
pride and energy on the ground among ordinary people of all social
classes. This doesn't look to me like a society being poisoned by
negative journalism.

If you're up for spending $2700 or so, the new Sony HDV HVR-A1U
camera may be a good choice.

http://www.sundancemediagroup.com/articles/A1U/HVR-A1U.htm

and

http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Sony-HCR-HC1-Review.htm

Only downside is it is a bottom feeder which means if you are sooting
anything longer than one hour per shot, you will lose time removing
it from the tripod and the mounting slug and vice versa to change
tapes. But the images will be killer great. I'll have a review on it
in the next few months.

recorder can just press play on vhs the recoder on dvd
recorder and realtime. question is i also want menus.
i looked at the sony gx7 but looks like can only
really crappy menus. heard about a pioneer that can do
better ones. Anyway also want to know if anyone has
either matrox RT or a pinnacle card that can do the
same then then be alowed to creat a menu. Thing is
love the idea of dumping tape footage and capturing
onto dvd format realtime just need to also create
menus.

I really enjoyed the survival guide. As a professional
Wedding Photographer I do all these things, light,
framing, releases. But the info on sound and
compression reallt answered some questions about why I
get pxlated video on my TV.
Thanks, guys.

Remake, got it in the 1990's... It has cool phaser sound effects.

Michael, how is a plane ticket from New York to San Francisco no
money? How is your own equipment no money? These things *do* cost
money. Perhaps it is money you would have spent anyway, or money you
had already budgeted for this semi-pro hobby, or money you had already
spent, but it's still money.

The hard part is, it takes people's time to be available and teach -
that's why I started Freevlog - to help me teach more people than I
had time to do in person.

Freevlog and a teach-the-teachers approach are the ways to go, I
think. We need to use the resources we have to get the word out, and
we need to use the web as effectively as possible-- we are, after all,
teaching people to put their stuff on the web, right? We need to find
local vloggers, give them the tools and resources (the talking
points if you will) for teaching others about vlogging.

I still maintain that a videoblogging van tour is not an efficient way
to spread the word. Locally, we have the guy driving around with
Stephen King killed John Lennon painted all over his van-- nobody
takes him seriously, either.

2005-08-24 Thread Serra Shiflett

This computer would be fine for video editing. just about any mac
sold these days works ok, really... all you need is enough storage
space, a firewire input, USB input, and fast enough processor. I just
upgraded, but before I was editing on a machine with a 500mhz
processor, so I know it can be done :-) I would suggest learning
Final Cut Pro, though. Its not that much different than Premier as
far as the interface goes, but so much better in general! good luck!

[videoblogging] My Yahoo Not Updating?

2005-08-24 Thread LeanBackVids.com

What can I do if Yahoo is not updating my feed?

I've tried republishing but nothing seems to work. All other feed
readers are getting our lastest post inside the feed, but Yahoo just
will not update. It is fairly important to me to get the Yahoo one
working since there are a dozen or so subscribers who use it.

Any ideas? The VlogMap feed updated almost instantly, but no love on
the LBV feed...

Re: [videoblogging] help selecting power book

2005-08-24 Thread Michael Verdi

Hey Richard,
I have the previous revision of that model. Mine has a 1.5GHz
processor vs. the 1.67 in that. I've also upgraded my RAM to 768MB.
Works great for me. I do have some external drives for editing video
though you can even get away without one if you are doing short
pieces and you don't install the latest Final Cut Pro Studio (FCP,
DVD Studio Pro, SoundTrack Pro, Motion) - it installs 40GB of stuff!

As far as a docking station - I haven't seen one in a while but you
don't really need one. You can just plug in an external monitor and
turn on your bluetooth keyboard and mouse and you're set. S

They don't make Premiere for Mac anymore. I don't know about the
latest PC versions of Premiere but when FCP 1 came out, lots of
people switched from Premiere 5.1 to FCP 1 and loved it (guess that's
why they don't make it anymore).

[videoblogging] Re: apple store presentations

2005-08-24 Thread jonny goldstein

It's good to have a bunch of methods of spreading the word. Personally, I think a van tour
could be very effective (among other methods) in that it will probably garner media buzz.
If people want to get it organized, more power to them. And if it's not all they hope for,
well, they'll learn something.

The van thing ain't for everybody...For example, I have local commitments, at least
through January. I'm gonna do more local stuff---teaching kids in my town how to vlog
(and getting paid for it, which makes it sustainable for me), speaking at local Apple Stores,
universities, and doing stuff on the web to promote vlogging on my own vlog and
wearethemedia.com

Other people are writing books, getting interviewed by mainstream media, making
vlogging tools, and using vlogs to reach people.

If there are people who want to make the van happen and are willing to figure out how,
then great. Other folks can work on other methods. Do what is exciting and feasible for
you. Connect with people who are excited by the same approach and pool efforts.

Let a zillion methods bloom.
