Re: [videoblogging] Re: another FAQ from a newbie

2006-04-13 Thread Nathan Miller
I have a Panasonic GV-NS100, (I think that is the
number on it) I love it...

Hmmm...I use FCP...
One thing to think about with tape cameras is the log
and capture thing...can be time comsuming, however I
usually set it up in FCP/let it work while I take care
of other things...with a memory card camera, only a
matter of seconds til you have the footage on your
hard drive, however you may have
encode/demux/render/do something to the footage to
make it editable/native in FCP...

I use both, a little Sony Cyber-shot that still is
ticking after 3 plus years...and the Panasonic camera
which records great sound/images...however it broke a
while back and had to pay 3 yen to get it
fixed...(275USD)

hmmm...

CNet has a good page to help you sort out they type
 of camcorder that
 you might want:

As always I want to stress it is not how much or how
 big the tool is
what you do with the tool, or in this case,
 camcorder. What kind of
vlogging are you interest in doing or trying? That
 will go a long way
to helping you get the right equipment.

If you want something that you can carry around on
 you every day and
are willing to trade x amount of video quality for
 immediate capture
opportunities then you are looking at the memory
 card camcorders.

On the low end look for brand like DXG. I have used
 one for about a
year and it was a joy. People were not threatened
 and I was able to
get candid shots. It was only for web videos, I
 can't port them to
 other uses.

Stay way from Aiptek and Mustek, pure crap unless
 you get a deal for
$50. And even then you will have lost money.

On the quality end of Memory Card Camcorders you
 gotta go with the
Xacti, I think my next camcorder will be one of
 those. Marcus Sandy
has one of those and they are very cool.

If you want good dv quality and want to stick with
 tapes I do like the
 Panasonics. I have a GV-19 but if I had the budget I
 would have moved
up the food chain to the higher priced units. The
 disadvantage is that
it is bulky and mine is a sky blue. I can't sneak up
 on folks.

[videoblogging] Ulead Video9 audio import prob

2006-04-13 Thread mgmoon
I've just started vlogging ... http://moon.blogspot.com/ and I
have a weird situation with Ulead Video9 audio import.
The program is cutting off the last second or so of the clip.
In Windows Media player the clip is 6 seconds long.
When i import it, or even preview it, it's truncated the last bit and
is only 4.8 seconds long.\
I've cleared out my temp directory, tried renaming the clip so nothing
is cached, but no go.
I had to redo my intro in MovieMaker to have all the audio play.
Any ideas?
(If you listen to the eerie chimes of my into, hear how it just cuts
off at the end?
I've made sure to upgrade to the latest version, but to no avail.

Thank you in advance,

Mike

IMHO, do just get something and start..I use a JVC that has DV
tape and my Kodak that records .mov files 640x480the big thing

and compress your videos...I use the lite version of Sony Vegas
and for the most part it is pretty good..

I say just start because I kept getting caught up in the I have to
have the perfect camera debate in my head and with others, I found
the JVC on sale and had some discount coupons and got it fairly
inexpensivily, so although I know I will be upgrading again soon, I
will use it as my second camera so it's not a loss.

But just go and start the best way to learn is by doing...no amount
of research can replace the hands on experience you get and this
community is just great for helping outso go vlog!! :)

Also for right now steer away from HD, it is still to new and it
consumes A LOT of hard drive space.and it is still a bit

I'll throw in my 2cents re: miniDV loading placement: muy importante! I have
the Canon
Optura 60, which I do really like (not 3ccd, tho), although my big beefs with
it is that
there's no Easy mode (all those features are overkill for me) and it's size.
Don't get me
wrong, it's pretty darn small, but it's not like I can toss it in my purse and
take it around
town. I've spent my non-existent tax return on a sexy, teensy camera I can pop
in my
pocket for on-the-fly videoblogging--something I absolutely can't get
accomplished with
the Optura.

Unless you've got a lot of other things in your life that you can use a decent
videocamera
for in the event that you get too frustrated with vlogging (kids parties?
Dance recitals?
Weddings? vacations?) I'd stick to a nice digital camera that takes video. I've
only had the
new camera for three days and I'm still messing with it, but there are other
vloggers out
there who use it (or some version of it) and like it. Sanyo Xacti c6--very good
price on
ebay and seriously: sexy as all get out.

I picked up a very inexpensive ($80us) used Vivitar DVR-310 with a
1gig memory card. This Digital Video Recorder (DVR) stores the video
on SD memory cards. The unit is very small (fits in a shirt pocket)
and also has a built in 3mb camera and mp3 player.
It can tape video in 640x480 or 320x240 res.
It sucks in low lighting, but I'll make due.

I guess my point is, you can vlog for CHEAP.
Heck, you could get a webcam for $10 and vlog from your computer if
you wanted.

If I find that I really get into this vlogging, then I'll see about
upgrading my camcorder. For now... I'm happy.

Search for VIVITAR DVR-310 should get you a few places. I see some on
eBay, but those listed are in stores and seem more expensive then
dealing with an online retailer.

Dear Video Blogging Buddies and Pals,As some of you know in my day job I am a Professor of Information Science and Technology at the University of Missouri - Rolla.I teach a class called Human-Computer Interaction Evaluation.
The biggest, most important, part of the class is a project where teams work with a client to carry out an evaluation of system interface. One of our clients this semester is
blip.tvPart of the blip team's evaluation is usability tests of the blip interface that they will carry out at a distance, using software called WebEx.It would be really cool if some of you would be willing to volunteer for this testing.
The ideal person is:a) Someone familiar with video blogging, but unfamiliar with blip. b) Someone whose computer meets the requirements for WebEx (basically this is XP or Mac - I've found Safari works better than firefox on Mac)
... more on WebEx requirements hereSystem Requirements http://support.webex.com/support/system-requirements.html?_nfpb=true_pageLabel=SystemRequirementsHome
 Test System https://peupgrade.webex.com/peupgrade/t.php?AT=STSU=https://my.webex.com/join.phpBU=http://www.webex.com/lp/stest/webresult.htm
The test should be no more than 30 minutes including the WebEx installation/configuration.My students would be eternally grateful! If you are willing to do this, please contact the blip evaluation team project manager (and IST grad student) Tom Peterson
[EMAIL PROTECTED]... thanks! ... Richard-- Richard http://www.richardshow.com

[videoblogging] Hard drives local storage question

2006-04-13 Thread Digital
I really felt the storage crunch after Videoblogging week. Downloading
and viewing more videos and ramping up my own video production means
I've been chewing through alot of hard drive space.

My general questions to everyone are: how much hard drive space do all
of your videos take up? Do you store off site, buy external drives,
tapes, something else? Do you just purge them after awhile? (I find
that I can't part with anything..such a pack rat!)

Looks like I am buying another external drive soon but am open to
other ideas...

2006-04-13 Thread David Howell
I was using Fireant but stopped because the last time I used it, it
downloaded the videos and I dont want my drive space to be taken up.
As a result, I'm just using my browser too to watch videos now.

I have a couple larger external firewire drives that hold my media.
They are rather full right now. Time to get yet another drive soon. On
the drive that I am using for current media with which I am going to
edit or thinking about editing, I have 63 gigs free out of 200. I
assure you that will be taken up rather quickly though.

Since I never re-record over my tapes, I always have a copy of the
original media on the shelves if a drive ever fails.

LOL...for those who DIDn't they are spaniel
mixes...for a change I don't have "labmixes." They're just now
learning to walk and I'm letting them out of the cage more often. This is
the really cute time. One nice thing about doing this for the SPCA is that
you know how people say "the problem with puppies and kittens is that they grow
up to be dogs and cats." I have dogs and don't want to add any more (no
space), but I can periodically still have puppies, knowing that they will
eventually go off to good homes.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Hard drives local storage question

2006-04-13 Thread Harold Johnson

I've yet to work out the best solution to this. When you're downloading video, hard drive space fills up *quick*! Someday (soon), we'll each have inexpensive terabyte + drives, andstorage may not seem much of a problem. But today, most folks can most likely afford anything from 40GB on up to 400GB, more or less (and depending on your financial circumstances). And I can tell you from experience, 40 gigs fills up a laptop quick!!!

I can't see any reason why one would want to archive copies of other

If you're keeping tons of OPV on your disk, you should really ask

You know Fireant lets you control how much drive space it uses. I have
mine set to one gig.

I currently have one 250 gig firewire drive which is about 80% full. A
200 gig USB 2.0 drive that is 50% full, a 160 gig internal SATA drive
that is 80% full and network (gigabit ethernet) 300 gig drive which is
actually a secondary drive in my sons G4 that I use for back up. I
tend to keep the raw files for a project around for a few months and
then eventually delete the video for them keeping the FCP project
files and an uncompressed Quicktime copy of the completed project on a
data DVD. I have all my raw video on tape and can go back and
recapture if I decide I want to re-edit a project (which I've never
done).

I like to use Fireant which downloads videos. I like it because
playback is quicker when playing from my local drive. Also Fireant has
a feature that allows you to set a maximum amount of disk space that
you want the downloaded media to take up (once the max is reached it
starts to delete the oldest files even if I haven't watched them.) AND
I have it set to automatically delete files after I watch them.

[videoblogging] Want to help send cameras to Iraq?

2006-04-13 Thread Jay dedman
Im posting this notice for Brian from www.aliveinbaghdad.org
he's got a very ambitious goal..so please take time to check out his sight.
whatever you believe in, we need to fund the projects we want to see happen.

Jay
_

Alive in Baghdad is entering its next phase. Its founder Brian Conley
journeyed to Jordan and Iraq to document the experiences of Iraqis and
make face to face contact with Iraqis. As the violence expands and
news bureaus contract, Iraqis themselves will have to pick up the
slack if those outside the country are to take notice and better
comprehend the violence in their country.

We hope to supply Iraqis with digital still cameras and video cameras,
to produce media describing their lives and providing insight into
their daily struggles. As well as providing media equipment to
bloggers who have already demonstrated a dedication to informing the
outside world about the lives of Iraqis, Alive in Baghdad is working
on fostering other contacts outside this network. We are asking that
people in the United States with access to cameras, whether the
capital to purchase new ones, or secondary cameras they have laying
around the house, donate this equipment to Alive in Baghdad.

Although you may consider the camera fairly low quality, even 1
megapixel cameras could be providing 1 megapixel of insight we didn't
have about Iraqi life before. We also need minidv tapes and memory
cards.

If you don't have access to equipment, please consider making cash
donations via the Donate button at www.aliveinbaghdad.org

This is most definitely a FAQ. I love reading the responses (and now I'm
looking again at that Panasonic GS150), but I'm wondering if we might also
collaboratively build a wiki page where we list what hardware we use, how
we like it, pros, cons, etc. Not full-on reviews, but a simple overview of
real world use.

We could build out this page:

http://www.voxmedia.org/wiki/Videoblogging_Hardware

Then create sub pages that are camera models (like the Panasonic GS150) and
those of us that use it could add our thoughts and links for example
output.

Just an idea. And if this has already been done (it sounds familiar!),
please disregard!

Over a 1TB of logged and captured footage since I

About 300 GB of videos/mine/and the videobloggin

I need to do some house cleaning...
As for hardware...a few 250GB USB 2.0 drives (they

I think it's a brilliant idea.
As you said, real world with a checklist.
Does it fit in a purse?
How's the battery life?
Is it easy to get your files from the device.
Can you easily control the camera when looking at it from the front?

Sounds quite handy for the new vlogger-wannabes who are undecided or a
place to find other people that own the same equipment as you.

Sounds like a good place...

Hi, Andy. Brittany Shoot (bshoot.blogspot.com) found the Afikoman and was
handsomely rewarded with a copy of Essays on Thailand by Thanapol
Chadchaidee. It's what everyone wants, after all, and a good book to boot.

If God had given us tapes rather than solid state recording media, it would
have been sufficient.

[videoblogging] Vlogging Tornados in Iowa City

2006-04-13 Thread Aaron Valdez
We captured two different funnel clouds that touched down in downtown
Iowa City Thursday night. We literally missed being hit by two
blocks. A lot of damage to our downtown. Many historic buildings
destroyed. Cars flipped. Trees uprooted. Only minor injuries reported
at this point.

I was really proud of the Public Access Television station staying
open and airing footage and reports throughout the night. We had
teams of producers out shooting the aftermath and returning with
footage and we were the only local television station covering these
events.
