no but qt pro will do it.

there should not be free ones that do it because 3pg is part of mpeg4
which is an open but not free standard (it requires licencing to use)

Re: [videoblogging] getting popular on youtube

2006-05-21 Thread Harold Johnson

Interesting.  The video is decent, and I got somewhat caught up in the lyrics.  Still, not a stellar music video/concept, in my opinion -- not enough to warrant two million views -- which is what the article speculates about.  Apparently, some savvy marketing (ie, posting as porn) propelled this video to the YouTube Hall of Fame (thus far).

[videoblogging] Re: Help us get to Vloggercon!

2006-05-21 Thread Erin Nealey

Thank you all SO MUCH. I can't believe all who have donated :)

Just wanted to let those of you know that did donate (in case you
didn't receive my email), that I had to deny your donation.
Apparently, only a verified paypal user can accept money and my
husband is the verified paypal user with our bank account :) So
regrettably I had to deny all the payments.. which really stinks :(

So, for all of you who did donate.. if you would like to re-donate,
you can just simply paypal me money as a "service" to this email
address which is my husband's: redeemedbyhim(at)sc(dot)rr(dot)com. I
HATE to ask all of you to do it all over again. Paypal confuses me
sometimes.

Anyway, good news. In order to not miss out on those great tickets..
my husband and I bought our tickets this morning and are going to
vloggercon!! (whether we can afford it or not!) So I'll see you all
there :)

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Do you remember your first time...

2006-05-21 Thread Deirdre Straughan

The first day I borrowed a video camera from the office, I was filming
random (and boring) stuff around town. Then we went to dinner at a
local restaurant which featured, with no announcement, a concert by a
local gospel choir. I didn't think twice about getting right in
people's faces to get what I wanted (fortunately, I'd already finished
dinner), results are on http://www.beginningwithi.com/vlog/040720.htm

Maybe I'm just obnoxious, but it never occurred to me to worry about
filming anywhere, except the few times I've specifically been stopped.
But since I'm obviously a foreigner here I guess I am assumed to be an
over-zealous tourist. I probably get away with some things because
people who might want to tell me no don't think they can master the
English to explain it to me - they can't tell just by looking that I
speak Italian.

[videoblogging] Re: Do you remember your first time...

2006-05-21 Thread missbhavens1969

It's funny...I take my camera absolutely everywhere in hopes of catching a moment, or
meeting someone I simply *must* get on camera, and in then end, I rarely shoot
videoblogs in public. And when I do, they are all at major events (Halloween,
Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mardi Gras) where whipping out a camera isn''t given a second
thought. In New York, where pretty much everyone is a little bit wary, I'm more intimidated
about filming. Here in New Orleans, though, the whole vibe is a little bit more "out there"
and people are far more open to talking to you out of the blue. But I'm trying hard NOT to
look like a tourist, so, yet again, my camera spends too much time in my purse.

Turns out I'm awfully shy. I can film myself in all sorts of circumstances, but I can't seem
to make the leap to public vlogging even though it was my original intent for my videoblog
in the first place.

This will change eventually--I'm already a little bit tired of filming myself. I spend a
considerable amount of time alone anyway--I took up videoblogging partly to get myself
out of the house, see new things and look at my world a different way. I wanted to play
"tourist in my own town" (NYC, where I don't feel one bit like a tourist and don't care about
looking like one if I whip out a camera). But one look at my archive tells me that I haven't
changed at all. I've simply *documented* my spending time by myself.

Still learning,
Bekah

ps: the first time I took the camera to the streets that wasn't a calendar holiday was to film
the sad dead Christmas trees that lined the streets of the city at the end of January. The
simple act of my walking up the block filming the trees brrought several building
superintendents tto lean out their windows and shoo me away. They thought I was trying
to catch them in a sanitation violation of some kind. Wary New Yorkers...like I said. Stuff
like that discourages me.

I recommend starting small. Go to a public place that you know well
and where you know the people who will be there. Or go to a really
popular tourist spot, where a guy with a camcorder won't look
conspicuous at all.

> So with that said, do your remember how you felt on your first public

Very nervous. I think my first public vlog was at work, so I had my
NDA to worry about as well as the whole "I'm in public" thing. It was
very weird. In a way, I kind of hoped I'd get fired for it, I think.

[videoblogging] group behavior and responses to newbies

2006-05-21 Thread Deirdre Straughan
In the recent group hoo-ha about sexism etc., or at leaset around that
time, someone said that first-timers who had recently posted to the
group might have been put off by aggressive responses. Apparently, new
research says it ain't so:

http://www.fullcirc.com/weblog/2006/05/reciprocity-rides-again.htm

 Reciprocity Rides Again

In the recent edition of the Journal of Computer Mediated
Communications there was an article on Predicting continued
participation in newsgroups. ( Joyce, E., and Kraut, R. E.
2006).Journal Communication, 11(3), article 3.)

Abstract:
Turnover in online communities is very high, with most people who
initially post a message to an online community never contributing
again. In this paper, we test whether the responses that newcomers
receive to their first posts influence the extent to which they
continue to participate. The data come from initial posts made by
2,777 newcomers to six public newsgroups. We coded the content and
valence of the initial post and its first response, if it received
one, to see if these factors influenced newcomers' likelihood of
posting again. Approximately 61% of newcomers received a reply to
their initial post, and those who got a reply were 12% more likely to
post to the community again; their probability of posting again
increased from 44% to 56%. They were more likely to receive a response
if they asked a question or wrote a longer post. Surprisingly, the
quality of the response they received—its
emotional tone and whether it answered a newcomer's question—did
not influence the likelihood of the newcomer's posting again.

It was great to see data that confirmed the practices I've seen over
the years and my recommendation to online facilitators that initial
messages get responses. A quick is the first manifestation of "being
heard" online! If we don't feel heard F2F, we often stop
communicating. Why not the same online?

What was REALLY interesting here was that the quality of the response
did not influence the reaction. Is this, in effect, a simple nodding?
An "um huh?"

[videoblogging] While doing research for privacy issues / net nuetrality

2006-05-21 Thread bordercollieaustralianshepherd

In the late 70's and 80's a way to "Fix" a thief was to immediatly
after purchase, open up the electronics item and switch polarity. The
thief would steal  for example a car radio, hook it up (red to red,
Black to Black) and because polarity the was reversed the device would
blow a fuse or fry making a resale or use unlikely and unprofitable.
It worked. Of course you had to remember that you had done this.

This is the good that I found. I'll return with the questionable
findings later. While doing research for privacy issues, "net
neutrality" and the computer OS I am using, I came across this service.

http://orbicule.com/undercover/works.html
Description:
In case of theft
As soon as your Mac is stolen, you send us the Undercover ID you
received upon registration. We will add this code to our database of
stolen Macs.

The first phase
The next time your stolen Mac goes online (using dial-up, WiFi,
ethernet, Bluetooth, ...) it will notice that its Undercover ID is
included in our database of stolen Macs. This will initiate the first
phase, in which Undercover will send both network information and
screenshots of your stolen Mac. The network information enables us to
work with the network administrators of the ISP the thief is connected
to. Since ISPs consider computer theft as network abuse, they will
uncover the thief's identity. Together with law enforcement, we work
to recover the Mac. If your Mac has a built-in iSight, or if the thief
attached an external iSight, Undercover will send iSight pictures of
the thief. Think of it as running Photo Booth in the background.

Plan B
If law enforcement fails to recover the stolen Mac, Undercover
switches to plan B. In this mode, Undercover will simulate a screen
failure, slowly making the Mac's screen unusable. At this point, we
think the thief has two options: to send the computer to a reseller
for repair, or to get rid of it by selling it on the Net. In either
case, Undercover will show a full-screen message alerting the reseller
or someone who bought the Mac from the thief that the Mac has been
stolen, that it has become unusable and that it needs to be returned
as soon as possible. Our contact information and a promise for a
finder's fee (which will be covered by us) will be displayed as well.
This message can be fully customized by the user and when dismissed,
this message will instantly reappear. Additionally, your Mac will
start shouting at the highest volume level, using its built-in
text-to-speech capabilities. You can decide when Undercover switches
to plan B and what message is displayed. Note that this message is NOT
displayed to the thief.

It's a very clue-train manifesto concept. The content doesn't matter at all, it's the dialogue that goes on around it. You might well be talking about modern art. It's not the art, it's the conversation and the ideas it provokes.I like it. It gives me cart blanc to make bad videos. :)I have my own saying."Talk is cheap, and that's what makes it so great." ...and I guess the same thing now applies to media. A huge proliferation of cheaply produced media on the web is not a negative thing. Everyone should be able to make videos anytome they like.Of course i'm always reminded of William Burroughs... "...to vulgarize and falsify untill the bare lies shine through."  My alter ego is so bad at everything it's good.  That is the concept of so called naive art. [videoblogging] 3gp converter

2006-05-21 Thread deepanjan_nag_123

Hi! I have a Nokia 6681 and use it sometimes to shoot videos. The
videos are in the 3gpp format. I would like to upload my mobile videos
to Youtube, but Youtube doesn't support the 3gp format. There are some
file format converters but they are all commercial products and do not
allow me to convert videos of length greater than 5 mons.
Are you folks aware of any free or opensource video format converter
that'll help convert my 3gp files into one of the accepted Youtube
formats?

[videoblogging] Former Apple Employee No. 68 Creates Cellphone Content

2006-05-21 Thread Jan

http://tinyurl.com/okawg

From the NY Times article wherein former Apple employee No. 68
says, "Content is just a means to an end, so there's something to talk about,"
he said. In other words, social connection trumps all.

Content. Content. Content. The ulterior motive for consuming
content is social networking. Holy cow.

Also, it only works on the specific URL page that you give it. If you want whole-site analysis, Google Analytics is one useful free tool: http://www.google.com/analytics/index.html
