how much money do you need to make? if i offered $.o1 for a story or video or a block of 10 videos . would that make you a paid journalist? Countries that were not sentencing journalists to prison terms anymore have been doing it these last months for bloggers. This is the case in Egypt http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/world/countries/egypt.html?nav=eland Jordan, she said yesterday as the group released its sixth annual Worldwide Press Freedom Index http://www.rsf.org/IMG/pdf/index_2007_en.pdf. Egypt ranked 146th and Jordan 122nd in press freedom among the 169 countries for which data were available. Reporters Without Borders said major industrialized countries, including the United States, made slight progress, moving up several notches, with the exception of Russia http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/world/countries/russia.html?nav=el. Iceland http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Iceland?tid=informline topped the list for press freedom in the survey, and Eritrea http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Eritrea?tid=informline ranked last. While not all press freedom violations were known in the countries ranked second and third from the bottom -- North Korea http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/world/countries/korea.html?nav=eland Turkmenistan http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Turkmenistan?tid=informline -- Eritrea deserves to be at the bottom, the group said. Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki has banished privately owned press outlets and jailed the few journalists who have dared criticize the government, it said. We know that four of them have died in detention and we have every reason to fear that others will suffer the same fate, the group added. Most democracies improved their ranking, with the United States moving up to 48th place from last year's 53rd, Morillon said. The reason the United States did not make the top 30 is because videographer and blogger Josh Wolf spent almost eight months in jail for not turning over video footage of a demonstration in San Francisco http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/San+Francisco?tid=informline and because the confidentiality of sources is under continued attack, she said. Cameraman Sami al-Hajj, from al-Jazeera satellite television, is still being held without charges at the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/world/countries/cuba.html?nav=el, and journalist Chauncey Bailey http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Chauncey+Bailey?tid=informline was killed in Oakland http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Oakland?tid=informline, Calif. http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/California?tid=informline , after his coverage made him a target, she added. Outside Europe http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Europe?tid=informline, no region has been spared censorship or violence toward journalists. We are particularly disturbed by the situation in Burma http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Myanmar?tid=informline, Reporters Without Borders said. The military junta's crackdown on demonstrations bodes ill for the future of basic freedoms. . . . Journalists continue to work under the yoke of harsh censorship from which nothing escapes, not even small ads. China http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/world/countries/china.html?nav=elwas at the low end of the index, in 163rd place. With less than a year to go to the 2008 Olympics, the reforms and the releases of imprisoned journalists so often promised by the authorities seem to be a vain hope, the group said. Concerning Uzbekistan http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Uzbekistan?tid=informline (160th), Reporters Without Borders said it feared a wave of repression would target the handful of independent journalists left in the run-up to the presidential election in December. In the Palestinian territories (158th), the threat has changed, according to Morillon. Two years ago, it was coming from the Israeli forces shooting at Palestinian reporters. These days, the main threat comes from internal conflicts and the rivalry between

[videoblogging] any experience with podpress
I know I know... i should probably be using show-in-a box, but going into this process I got a ton of advice from a ton of people and over and over I was advised to use podpress to embed my videos on my blog and create my rss feed. Would I do it again..no... but for now... there it is. I am not a coder, so while I have become pretty facile with html, I would need to hire someone to alter my blog, so it is podpress for now. (i am also not a huge feedburner fan, and don't want to risk having to forward my itunes feed now, we all know what that is like) We are featured on itunes this week, which is incredibly wonderful, however my podpress stats don't even list my latest post. I have no idea how many hits itunes is generating, and as I have a huge crew I would like to someday pay, my stats are vital. [videoblogging] Are You Having Technical Problems With Blip TV
Hello Everyone, I was wondering if any of you out there have experienced any problems recently with uploading your videos onto Blip? Last week, I was unable to upload my video after multiple attempts over a couple of days using both Firefox and Internet Explorer. When I contacted Blip they accused my year old Dell XPS M140 for the problems although offering no REAL concrete answers or solutions to why this happen and how to avoid it in the future. I've been uploading my videos to Blip since Feb 2007 and I've never been able to use Firefox for any of my uploads, and some of my uploads have taken as long as 6 hours. Is this normal using Blip? I cannot continue to have these problems and have Blip point the finger at me and my computer. Does anyone have any insight or answers to these questions? Thanks! Re: [videoblogging] Are You Having Technical Problems With Blip TV
Nope. Nobody'd be uploading to them if there were widespread problems. Blip works fine for me almost all the time. They seriously let me down this morning on two important demonstrations for clients when their servers went down between 9 and 12. But that's very unusual. Their support is the best I've ever come across. They will go massively out of their way to help. Chances are, if they're telling you it's to do with something your end, it is. Suggestions: - Check your upload speed, and try uploading to Blip using somebody else's internet connection. Perhaps your ISP sucks. Mine used to. I got a new one. Contention (number of people sharing the pipe) and upload speeds are not things you'd know without checking. Who knows, perhaps your ISP doesn't like people uploading stuff, so they make it deliberately difficult. Sounds a bit like it. - If you're using a wireless connection, plug in. - Download UpperBlip batch uploading app from Blip's download tools section and use it to upload your videos. - Upgrade Firefox. Better yet, uninstall it and download the latest version and install it fresh. - Then uninstall your Flash player and download a new copy. - Lose the Dell. Dells suck dead man's ass. I normally say something a LOT ruder. I do IT support for people on the side, and I don't know one single person with a Dell that hasn't slowed down to an unbearable standstill after 2 years - more often after just ONE year. It seems to me that they make them like that so that you have to buy new ones. And the great thing is, almost all people who have slow Dell seem to replace it with... another Dell. It's all they know. Don't make the same mistake. Particularly now that all new machines come with Vista, the world's worst operating system. Put Vista on a Dell, it's like crossing the beams. You might as well put your fist through the screen before you even turn it on. Hi everyone, Just a reminder that the News Corp meeting is Friday October 19 at 10 AM and is located at the Hudson Theatre 145 W 44th Street New York. Get there early! We have posted a video to YouTube which you can find here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ock18H8XkuQ In the past, reporters from the NY Times and the Wall Street Journal have attended as members of the press. We are already having issues with News Corp whether we will be able to take a camera into the meeting because we are only a blogger and not a journalist. This group has been debating this very isssue. Here is a real chance to act upon that debate. It is vital everyone bears in mind that our purpose in asking other bloggers to come is NOT to promote our blog rather it is for everyone to blog their own reactions to the increasing concentration of media ownership that Rupert Murdoch and Fox represent. It would be great to see you all. Paul Bendat http://maynereport.blip.tv www.youtube.com/maynereport

In response to Schlomo David... The unreachable thing was on my newest vid too. Then I tried again a few moments later and it was up. The reason I question whether or not the regular plays were hitting blip was because I picked a few and watched them a couple times, refreshed cache and all, and saw no views reflected on my blip stats. As I said the download comes from blip's mirror, but I'm not sure where the player is pulling from. I'm sure the downloads are working. I thought I would post it here because many of you are industry, RSS and distribution gurus, and I figured that they were pulling your vids too. I also noticed that they're only pulling my stuff from my homegrown WordPress vlog and not the blip feed or my blogspot feeds. I hesitate to post this to the blip group because I really don't want to be in yet another group. This and the various discdogging groups occupy too much of my time already. I send my questions directly to blip, but I thought because of the nature of the issue that it was something that would be best posted here. I think it's more than just a blip issue. They did link to my vlog, which is great, but I would like to know where their player is pulling the video from. Between 9am and 12pm your time is approximately between 4am and 7am here in NYC, where blip is located. :) Here's their post about it: http://blog.blip.tv/blog/2007/10/18/service/ -- Bill Cammack http://billcammack.com Suggestions: - Check your upload speed, and try uploading to Blip using somebody else's internet connection. As a nerd I want to know what might cause Dells to slow down in the way you suggest. As there isnt much hardware that would be responsible for such symptoms, apart from some RAM or harddrive partial failure, it sounds more like an OS issue. Now certainly Windows often gets clogged up within a year or two and needs reinstalling, but I dont know what there is about Dells that would make it more of an issue with them. Maybe they ship some iffy drivers or apps with the machine, but again Id usually expect that to make them slow to start with, rather than after a year. Personally I dont believe it being a Dell or how old it is is terribly relevent to whether its responsible for Gerry's problems with Blip. It could be, but the devil will be in the detail, its jsut as likely some setting or app installed on your computer thats causing woes, or some part of your approach is causing a problem, eg what format filesize are you uploading the videos as? Re: [videoblogging] Are You Having Technical Problems With Blip TV
Hi, The Firefox issue is probably some setting that is not allowing you to upload video. I use Firefox almost exclusively and haven't had any with blip but I have seen others who had settings that blocked interactive type functionality on various sites. As far as slow upload speeds with Internet Explorer, if your videos aren't huge it could be a number of things including slow connection, ISP blocking something, Windows settings, firewall settings, spyware trojans eating up your bandwidth, etc. It could even be Internet Explorer. To identify whether the browser is the problem, I suggest FTPing the videos. Instructions are here: http://blip.tv/ftp/ I use FileZilla as my FTP client - it's free and easy to use. Here's a video on how to set it up: http://blip.tv/file/367660/ If you are able to upload via FTP without issue, then the problem is your browser. Otherwise, there are many other things to explore including what others have suggested. . . . kenya allmond [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://kenya.allmond.us vm/f 202.478.0490 To thine own self be true. - Original Message From: gerrytshow [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: videoblogging@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, October 18, 2007 4:46:55 PM Subject: [videoblogging] Are You Having Technical Problems With Blip TV Hello Everyone, I was wondering if any of you out there have experienced any problems recently with uploading your videos onto Blip? Wow, I've never had any problems like that with blip. I use and have used firefox on of and mac to upload and never takes a long time to upload. The upload time will be dependent on you connection speed, I have only been limited by my upload speed with blip. Do you have another computer that you an try uploading from? Maybe a laptop? -Lan www.LanBui.com (sent from my mobile device) On Oct 18, 2007, at 5:06 PM, RANDY MANN [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: blip is great. the only problems i get is the ones i cause, if they say its your computer then try shaking it and yelling at it. Not just you. There are a lot of people that are sick of it. I finally realized that they arent going to do anything about and just bookmarked my dashboard inside the Blip site. Of course, the autoplay stops me from going to Blips front page now because it's so annoying and I miss out on any new shows that might pop up there. Changing out the promos would help. It would be even better if blip featured a video. I know blip is all about promoting shows. But not every episode from every show is a hot one. If they put a hot one up every day, that would be my dream come true, as a viewer. As a creator, I love blip, of course. --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, bestdamntechshow [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Since the new homepage has gone up, we're going to be programming more promos on it, so fear not, it will be changed out in the days to come and definitely more often! _drew olanoff drew (at) blip.tv --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, David Howell taoofdavid@ wrote: Not just you.
