[videoblogging] Re: Need to decide on a format

2007-11-14 Thread Steve Watkins
Welcome. I love animation and high def, so Im looking forward to seeing your
stuff.

Your plan sounds good to me. The devil is in the bitrate you choose, and a few
other
encoding options. Your choices of resolution sound good.

Cheers

Hi, My name is Ben, I'm from Sydney Australia and I love animating.
I'm currently working on an animated podcast and I would really
appreciate your opinion on which formats I should provide.

Right now I'm thinking of rendering out a 640x360 version and encoding
it as a H264/AAC MP4, then uploading it to Blip.tv where their system
will take care of transcoding it to FLV and an iPod compatible M4V,
that gets the episode online relatively quickly and with little
 trouble.

Thing is I also want to offer proper HD as an option so after that
 I'll render out a 1920x1080 version, then scale a copy to 1280x720
before encoding them both to H264/AAC MP4 again and adding them as
 additional HDTV files on Blip.tv.

As you've already noticed I'm planning to stick to widescreen formats,
fact is designing for both 4:3 and 16:9 would be a bit of a pain and
I'd rather have video's that'll play nice with future video standards
that are already being adopted rather than what's currently common.

 What do you reckon?
I am really looking forward to your responses and participating with
 the community,
 Thanks!

Info about Yahoo! Groups in Beta
http://feedback.yahoo.com/homepage/?prop=groupsbeta
Worth a look ... offer a suggestion or two

As you may have already noticed, we just rolled out a release today that
contains the much
anticipated Library feature. This feature is the photos, files, and links
solution that we've
been working on.

Key improvements over the files, photos, and links features on Classic Groups
include:

- MODERATION: You're now able to moderate all types of content posted to the
Library,
not just photos as in Classic Groups.

However, in this release moderation is a bit like pregnancy. It's either all
the way on (for all
three types of content and for everyone in the group) or all the way off. We're
not yet able
to offer the ability to moderate (or unmoderate) specific members the way we do
with
messages.

The setting to turn moderation on, as well as default settings for the Library,
can be
found, not surprisingly, in Management.

- FOLDER PERMISSIONS: You now have the option to make any folder public (so
that
anyone can see what's inside, including non-members), member only, or moderator
only
(But note, you can't put a folder with less restrictive permissions inside one
that is more
restrictive).

And you can separately decide who can contribute to a folder: members or
moderators
only.

- NESTED FOLDERS: You can now nest folders within folders for photos as well as
links and
files ( happy Frank? :) ).

- MIXED MEDIA FOLDERS: No more segregation of photos in one place, files in
another,
and links in a third. Now you have the option to mix different types of media
about a
subject in a single folder.

- SORT: You can now sort items in a folder by file type, title, name, file
size, and date
posted.

- INTEGRATED MESSAGE ATTACHMENTS: Attachments posted in messages (using the web
interface) are now stored in a Media from Messages folder bringing all these
attachments
together in a single place and enabling copying from one folder to another.

- IMPROVED UPLOADER SLIDE SLOW: It's now faster and easier to upload files
and
photos, and it's easier and more fun to view the photos once they're online.

- DRAG DROP: You now have the option to move files from one folder to another
(or to
copy from the Media from Messages folder) through a desktop like drag and
drop
interface.

But along with these improvements, there are also some features that are not
yet
implemented. They include:
- The ability to automatically notify members when you add an item to the
Library.
- The ability to create private folders that only one person can contribute
to.
- The option to give members the ability to create folders.
- The option to copy files from one folder to another.

A big thank you to the all Groups team members who have been have been hard at
work
on this one! It's a biggie.

But that's not all that is happening today: the release also includes a number
of other
important bug fixes and changes including:
- Restoring the ability to send attachments via email in the same way you can
on Classic
Groups (although these attachments will not (yet) be stored on the site, in the
way they are
on the Beta if you post via the web).
- Fixing the bug that has been causing multi-word message searches not to work
(though
searching by email address still doesn't work, even for moderators).
- Enabling members to update the display of their age, gender, and location (as
well as
profile image and name) directly from the Preferences page.
- Fixing the Customization bug that causes the page to hang when you try to
edit new
modules without first publishing them.
- Restoring the masking of email addresses in the message archive in the same
way it is
done today on Classic Groups.
- Further tightening the Messages section to get more content onto the page.
- The return of the ability to view messages headers (view source on Classic).
- Making the link for promoting a member to moderator or owner status more
visible.
- Some renaming for clarity including conversations back to messages and
Moderator
Actions to Approve-Ban-Promote-Fix.

I see nothing wrong in that, we have to hold ourselves accoutable,

accoutable. I have failed at it more than I have succeeded and that
is why I decieded to keep my mouth shut and try to become the person
I want to be

But none of us are perfect and we never will be, doesn't mean we
should stop trying though...I don't subscribe to the emails, I just

That being said, let's revisit my prior point about motivations and
all that. I'm not in this because I want to make a career out of
it. I
could mudsling and name-call 'till I'm blue and I'd have literally
nothing to lose. Someone on this thread mentioned that all this
silliness was sort of neat and New Media Cool: you won't see Rupert

non-forum, in our case). Well guess what? That's because it's wildly
fucking unprofessional! See, I get to swear like that because I have
nothing to lose! I'm NOT a professional! Get it?

If y'all want to be the kings of New Media (or even the jesters) and
usher in a New Age y'all should reflect a little on your behaviour.
I

Have you been in touch with YouTube support, to block your

down because it doesn't violate their TC? As far as I know,
especially if they're aware that there's a problem, they'll check
before taking down videos that are flagged as inappropriate.

And have you thought of disabling comments on YouTube and embedding
your YT videos on a blog, where you can control comments and also
design a great site around them?

If you set up a blog on Wordpress, you can block certain IP addresses
from sending comments. IP address blocks are a lot harder for people
to get around than just blocking their account on YouTube - the
average person can't just create another IP address the way they can
create a new YouTube account.

That means you can also still continue to host your videos on YouTube
and keep all your subscribers - just disable all comments there and
directing people in your videos to comment at your blog instead of at
Youtube.

Hi Jill,

First off, here's the link to NewTeeVee's page asking for questions
for Steve Chen.
http://newteevee.com/2007/11/11/questions-for-youtubes-steve-chen/
or, if that doesn't work when clicked, try this:
http://tinyurl.com/2f5ry7

I was going to post it here anyway, since I'm sure other people have
questions they'd like to put to him.

Anyway, you don't sound lame :)
I learnt it all from scratch right here, too.

Having your own videoblog away from Youtube is a very simple and
rewarding thing to do, particularly if you create regular content.

You can copy paste your YouTube videos into your blog posts. That
way you don't have to lose subscribers by leaving Youtube. And you
can control comments a lot better - just disabling them on Youtube
totally. Making it harder for people to harrass you.

If they do follow you to your blog to harrass you, each comment they
send you will come with their IP address - which is a number unique
(in most cases) to their internet connection. With your own Wordpress
blog, you can blacklist those specific IP addresses in your blog's
simple control panel. Get a comment from a stalker, copy the IP
address from their comment into your blog's IP-blocking box, and bam,
their internet connection is blocked.

For this reason, the best blog to use is a Wordpress blog, running the
new Show In A Box theme that people on this list have created. You
can download everything you need to at http://showinabox.tv/

You can find other help and advice about videoblogs at
http://freevlog.org/

If this is all too complicated for you, you could try Revver as well
as Blip - Revver's aim is to share advertising revenues with you. In
fact, you could upload to multiple video services to see which suits
you best. Others include Vimeo, Brightcove, Veoh, all of whom would
be happy to have your content on there, I think. A service that a lot
of people here have been talking about, that handles uploading to
multiple services for you is http://tubemogul.com/

Hope this wasn't too rambly or confusing.

Re: [videoblogging] Bored

2007-11-14 Thread Ron Watson
This kind of a list invites that kind of behavior.

You should see the discdog lists on Yahoo. They're brutal!

It's the main reason that I created k9disc.com. It's a real community
and we don't have any of this crap.

The thing is that these distribution lists, pretending to be groups,
are flashes in the pan - there's no permanence. So I can write
something nasty and it's gone - poof - it's the definition of FLash
in the pan.

On a discussion forum that doesn't happen. Things are permanent. It's
up there forever.

The other reason that these lists are problematic, is that they are a
pushed message - most of us get these in our inboxes and that means
that we must address them. Forums are a pulled message, which means
that we actively go in search of the information - we select it.

I think that push v pull is just as important in defining the
dialogue on these lists as the lack of permanence.

I would really like to see this list be ported to a discussion forum,
myself. There are some nice programs that allow for pulling posts
from Yahoo lists and indexing them into a forum.

I think that would be awesome!

I started to do it with the discdog lists, but there's some powerful
personalities in charge of them, and I did not want to let them set
their sights on me for 'taking' their stuff, so it never went
anywhere. We had a team of 5 cover 2000 posts each in about 1 week.
All was ready to go, but I balked because I didn't want to make any

I know some of us seem to like it, and some of us just can't stop

themselves why they still subscribe to this list - it's like a car
 wreck. That saddens me.

We all get heated about issues - fine - but if people have got
something negative to say about another person, about their
motivations or anything that's likely to lead to a personal slanging
match, perhaps they could show us the courtesy of having their open

Maybe that will make this list more 'boring' - but personally, I'm
much more bored of watching people going to the toilet on each other
when I want to talk about videoblogging.

Hi Jill,

If you're interested in earning money for your videos you should try
out Revver. We pair ads to your videos and split the ad revenue with
you, the creator. It's a simple model, there are no strings attached,
and we pay out to hundreds of creators a month - something that many
sites have promised to do but quite simply haven't yet.

I wasn't able to see your show because YouTube has banned your
channel, but I'm sure it would be fine for Revver since it's a
commentary on nudity rather than nudity for nudity's sake alone. Let
me know if you have any questions about Revver, and good luck!

I learned about ning.com from Steve Garflied and Chris Brogan, and
then I saw that Steve of JetSet was using it. and it if was robust

then a tech friend of mine who is well versed in these things gave a
big plug for Ning.

then David Sklar of Ning came to BKLN 2.0, my monthly meetup http://

my recent emails to their help desk have been answered within a day,

Re: [videoblogging] Bored

2007-11-14 Thread Ron Watson
While there is no doubt that you can find them on a search engine or
through searching, you have to have the right term. I recently tried
to find a resolution about 'dog aggression' in a Yahoo group that one
of the discdog organizations uses for rules development. Searching
for 'dog aggression' left off all the posts dealing with 'aggressive
dogs', which would still happen on a forum, the only difference is
that the topics are threaded and usually has an organizational
structure, which means it's easier to find what you are looking for.

Surfing 15000 posts is not very practical. It's painful, which is why
not many people do it. People come in fresh and instead of searching
the archives, or after their search terms failed, they then ask a
question that was answered 3 months, or a year ago. Which often
incites the same hostilities that ended the thread in the past.
Picking scabs and all...

On the side, when I search for things in Yahoo groups when my
keywords don't work, I usually try to recall the date then start
surfing from there.

I think that Forums are far better situated to reflect permanence
than these groups, but that's just my opinion.

Also, I think that there are some very different human behaviors on
display in these groups vs a forum.

Even though blogs and all the tools of Web 2.0
get so much attention, we've noticed that many
of the most active online discussions take place
on bulletin boards or forums. This despite the
fact that those tools can be confusing for
community members to use and hard for site
owners to manage.

We know a better way. Using MTs power as
a blogging platform, we've created the

Type Community Solution (MTCS), which offers all
the potential of traditional forum or bulletin
board tools, all the power of community blog
tools that support large numbers of
contributors, and all the ease of use and
management features of MT4.

   We're extremely
proud of the MTCS, and we're excited to see how
our users will build on it to engage their
communities in new ways.

The feature list is extensive, but some
of the highlights are:

   Ratings and
Recommendations for all site content (think:

   The ability for any site
member to contribute blog posts.

   Built-in templates for
running forums that are completely integrated

   Customizable Member

   Even more powerful template

With the Movable Type Community Solution,
blogging platforms go beyond simply powering
blogs - they can help bring classic web

into the modern web era of social media, sharing
user-generated content, rating and recommending

Just uploading a video, and I see Blip have added MP3 and MP4

i.e. You upload in whatever format you want, and they'll transcode to

And they've allowed Make visible to... with options for Everyone,

PLUS, you can set a date when you want this to change. So you can
keep something private for a while and then release, or release it to

Well JillNot to sound negative, but to be blunt.

Naked people + YouTube = *HHH!!!*

YouTube and the YT community, like MySpace and its community, doesn't
take too kindly to someone posting videos about or involving people
who aren'tummshall we sayDRESSED *HintHint*

As such, your chances of getting shut down (If not outright BANNED
from the site) increase DRAMATICALLY when you post videos of that
nature (Incidentally, your icnakedpeople account has been suspended.
I just checked).

If you want to continue to post videos of that nature, you are best
staying away from popular places such YouTube MySpace by avoiding
them LIKE THE PLAGUE and post your videos on a more liberal site.

Again...Not to sound negative BUT you *kinda sorta* asked for it IMO.
As such, your popularity and credibility as you indicated in the quote
below on your xgobobeanx channel has undoubtedly taken a hit as well.

Because I am somewhat popular on my xgobobeanx channel, I have haters and
 stalkers.
These two groups have followed me over to my icnakedpeople channel and have
 been
trying to get it shut down for inappropriate content. I am not showing

[snip...]

I am not looking to get a million views, i am just looking to not have my
 channel banned,
  or flagged, or taken down.

Any suggestions... please please please.. i am so desperate.

Yeah. See above.

Hope this helps :D

It's a split screen with two people debating a political issue.

This is one of THE BIGGEST reasons I put The Pat Cook Show (Where I
discuss political issues) on BlogTV. I'd love NOTHING more than to
get some Bush ass-kisser (I can say that on here, can I? :D) defending
WHY we should still keep our troops in Iraq at the expense of NOT
BEING ABLE TO SECURE OUR BORDERS like the Republicans (Including a
certain presidential candidate whom I shall keep nameless because we
all know who he is) want to do.

And that's just one of MANY issues I'd love to debate with a Bush
ass-kissing Republican too. :D

And the neat thing is that with BlogTV, you can have a two-way
conversation with someone and it'll be seen by others in the chat room
too (Not sure about the archive though as I haven't seen an archived
co-hosted show on there yet. Perhaps someone can comment on this?).

  Interesting how videoblogging is spreading.
I would not have predicted the NYtimes getting in on the action.

I knew it A LONG time ago. :D

Cheers :D

[videoblogging] introductions / questions thoughts on mobile editing...

2007-11-14 Thread noel hidalgo
hello all y'all.

my name is noneck and i've been traveling around the world for four
months and still have three more months. for background, i'm working
on a open sourced global documentary aptily named on the luck of
seven. for seven months, i'm traveling around the world blogging and
vlogging my way seven topics that surround free culture. more can be
read at http://luckofseven.com .

first, let me tell you my getup...
- macbook (2gig core duo, 2 gb memory, upgraded 180 gig hard drive 7200 rpm)
- final cut express
- external LaCie 250Gb 7200 rpm hard drive (too heavy to cary, but
i've made it this far)
- sony HDV-A1U
- i do everything in 1080i HD. you can not dissuade me from switching.

i'm writing this email for two reasons...

one.
thoughts on bus powered hard drives for mobile HD editing...
i'm desperately looking to replace my external LaCie 250Gb 7200 rpm
hard drive that is a freakin brick and a half. the device weighs as
much as my clothing (i don't carry much) and find myself unable to lug
all of my equipment when i'd like to edit. so, i have been researching
bus powered devices. i know i can easily walk into a store and
purchase an external firewire powered (or USB) hard drive but am
limited to 5200 rpm AND i don't know if the drive speed is quick
enough for HD editing in final cut express.

if 5200 is too slow, i've also been thinking of building my own
external HD from OWC's external bus powered enclosures and grabbing a
200 gb 7200 rpm.

since i am a poor fool, i don't have money to experiment. anyone have
recommendations on mobile HD editing?

two.
thoughts on being timely...
since i'm filming my interviews as a documentary and not just a vlog,
i find myself collecting more video than i can process. so instead of
sitting down and waiting for tape content to encode, i've been
thinking of finding a second hand held digital camcorder that's
suitable for a second perspective shots and quick turning around
interviews...

there is several catches, i'd like something compatible with a mac, i
want something that is in HD, has an external mic connection, and can
rock a wide angle or fish eyed lens.

since the release of sanyo's hd1000, my jaw has dropped and my heart
throbbed. does anyone have one? how's the external sound jack? have
you used it with a wireless microphone? how's the battery life? oh,
and the lens... is it bitchin?

sanyo's hd1000 -
http://www.sanyo-dsc.com/english/products/vpc_hd1000/compact.html

ok, so if you haven't used that camera, which camera would be suitable
replacement? oh and since i'm a poor fool, do you know anyone at
sanyo?

cheers!

Re: [videoblogging] Online Video Posting Sites, HELP NEEDED please! :)

2007-11-14 Thread Jill H
Hi Patrick,

Not to be rude, but you can find a TON of PARTNERS on youtube who show
nudity. Ripetv, Ford Models, NoGoodTV, just to name a few. My channel
was not showing any nudity, just discussing funny stories regarding
nudity. Completely different.

any my personal channel on youtube has not taken a hit- whatever that means.
