Mike is correct in that Mefeedia does have a lot of the data that
could make video conversation tracking possible. I hope we can do
something with this soon. We are working on putting the search
technology in place that should be making setting up these memes
possible for any user, we hope.

Re: [videoblogging] Best Youtube compression out of Adobe Premiere CS3

2008-02-01 Thread Ron Watson
I've been getting quite a bit of success by softening my videos a
bit. . It makes sense when you think about it. If you take the edges
off the image, there is less information, meaning the bitrate will
have more of the good stuff in there and not get bogged down on the
jagged edges of a picket fence or window blinds.

So what I've been doing with my stuff recently is taking it right out
of iMovie or FCP as an h.264, 320x240 .mov file at a bitrate of 1000
with a blur setting of one in the filter.

Examples:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=dvHHhxsUlQc (progressive...thanks BC)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=hEd1962JH2k

Old non-blurred footage:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=3rUMNSxBK3Y
http://youtube.com/watch?v=_EgYT0BKc-g

We do lots of panning and it's high action footage and our image
quality has dramatically improved since doing this.

I got the tip from a you tuber, but can't find the video.

it's not necessary that comments be posted directly TO the comment box
on a blog post. I personally feel that the best potential of all is
to track and display the back and forth BETWEEN blogs /vlogs using
  permalink tracking.

Joe vlogs -- Mary vlogs about Joe's post linking directly to Joe's
vlog post -- Joe responds on his vlog linking to Mary's post.

Then via various third party systems and track-back mechanisms this
conversation becomes visible... trackable... and even RSS
subscribe-able... sort of like a tag meme... but much more natural.
All that's MISSING from this equation is the tracker to make this
  dialogue that's already happening visible.

H.so are you saying we need some service to do track these
conversations?
tell me how it works from a user's perspective.

how does a tracker help me follow conversations across different sites?

Re: [videoblogging] Re: HV20 Camera Noise

2008-02-01 Thread Jan McLaughlin
For the Solo Video Practitioner:

Your statements here are why I advocate simply keeping the camera (a small
camera) within 3 feet of the speaking subject for the solo practitioner who
wants good sound.

It takes a good long time to get good at recording good sound with lots of
tools in the mix AND your dedicated ear, listening to what's going down on
tape.

If you ear is NOT dedicated, you're going to screw it up eventually - and
the more gear you have between the voice and the medium the more chance of
goofing it up.

What I LOVE about this medium is that you CAN do quality work without all
the bells whistles. I know what it is to work with all the bells
whistles. To heck with that :)

Another suggestion for the solo practitioner: Consider two recording
devices. One for video and one for audio. Use the camera for excellent
b-roll of the subject and environment. Record an audio-only interview where
you can really focus on questions and answers and know to a great deal of
certainty that you are getting good audio. Then cut the two together. Here's
an example of that idea used to good effect:

The DM50 does not do well vs. the videomics according to those who

Rode's are designed to bring pro level sound to high-Z
 consumer/prosumer equipment.

Beachtek boxes and the like are great IF you already have a $500+ pro
mic and a good mount for it. I have used them on multiple cameras.
They do NOT improve the mic preamp you are stuck with in the camera
(fortunately the HV20's hi-z preamp isn't nearly as bad as those on
Sony's consumer cams). But the Rode videomics really change this
equation, as they can deliver excellent sound and are DESIGNED for
camtop use. I have a beachtek, phantom power supply, and $900 AT4073s
that I use in a variety of applications, and I even HAVE a camtop
shock mount that works with them, but I'm still going for the videomic
(probably both models) for my HV20. I wish the videomics were smaller
and less look at me in appearance, but the only better option there
is the tinymic, and they are uber uber pricey (and that tiny diaphragm
just makes me nervous. How can it be a shotgun mic when my first
impulse is to convert it into a contact mic?)

There are reports that the stereo videomic still picks up camera noise
in very quiet environments, while the shotgun model is less prone to
 this.

yeah, lavs solve a lot of problems. For straight talent on camera
work a GOOD wireless lav setup is wise, but in general I don't like
the sound of lavs. I prefer even imperfect open sound that has a sense
of space to the sound of lavs, as long as intelligibibility isn't an
 issue.

The best sound will always be from an overhead boom as close to the
subject as possible, but that doesn't help the solo filmmaker.

[videoblogging] FEEDBACK NEEDED: Space and Logisitcs For Vlog Europe 2008

2008-02-01 Thread Jeffrey Taylor
So here's the idea:

1. Informal unconference weekend, formal goals - no strict schedule, but
strict context. We'll get into more details about this after we find the
right space.

2. Communal Space in central Budapest where we can cook if we want, surf if
we want, sleep if we want and meet when we want

3. No sponsors, as they come with expectations.

I propose this space: http://www.lofthostel.hu/

I Have not approached anyone yet and time is of the essence, so it's
important I get feedback on this ASAP. If this place doesn't work out, I'll
look for something similar.

   - Is smack dab in the middle of everything in Budapest
   - Can take up to 18 people (we can arrange for other apartments,
hostels, etc. in the general area once we hit more than 18 people)
   - Has a common room
   - Has a kitchen and free coffee tea
   - Has wifi
   - Costs about 135 Euros/150 US$/£75 for three days (they may cut us a
deal and make it cheaper as we guarantee occupancy – as I said, I haven't
   talked to them yet)

What do you think? Please reply to the Vlog Europe Yahoo Group.

First of all, thanks to Jeffrey for doing the research on this. Does anyone
who have more experience fom Budapest have other suggestions?

I think the idea of having a communal space where we meet is essential. In
past VlogEurope sessions we have had clusters of people sharing space, and
it has added greatly to the experience of the whole event.

The reason why we want these things to be settled already now months before
the event is that it enables us to get better deals as well as ensure that
our booking does not come so late that everything is occupied.

My personal hope is that we can have 2 such clusters settled within a short
period of time, and that as we get people filled into the hives, we can
begin working on the context of the weekend, finding not only topics to
cover this year, but also presenters, and a way for the different 'sessions'
to lead to something being created (which was a focus introduced during the
06 VlogEurope in Milan).

We will be filling the VlogEuerope blog with further information and
discussion about topics and ideas over the coming weeks, that is at
www.vlogeurope.com

So again: If you have better suggestions for spaces in Budapest, please let
us know.

And yes, of course you are free to just choose your own hotel/hostel that
weekend. We will not Force you to eat your breakfast while 8 other people
are filming your face :)

Best,

Raymond M. Kristiansen

 So here's the idea:

 1. Informal unconference weekend, formal goals - no strict schedule, but
strict context. We'll get into more details about this after we find the
 right space.

 2. Communal Space in central Budapest where we can cook if we want, surf
 if
we want, sleep if we want and meet when we want

 3. No sponsors, as they come with expectations.

 I propose this space: http://www.lofthostel.hu/

I Have not approached anyone yet and time is of the essence, so it's
important I get feedback on this ASAP. If this place doesn't work out,
 I'll
 look for something similar.

   - Is smack dab in the middle of everything in Budapest
   - Can take up to 18 people (we can arrange for other apartments,
hostels, etc. in the general area once we hit more than 18 people)
   - Has a common room
   - Has a kitchen and free coffee tea
   - Has wifi
   - Costs about 135 Euros/150 US$/£75 for three days (they may cut us a
deal and make it cheaper as we guarantee occupancy – as I said, I
 haven't
   talked to them yet)

What do you think? Please reply to the Vlog Europe Yahoo Group.

Re: [videoblogging] Japan Videobloggers List

2008-02-01 Thread Jay dedman
One thing that was mentioned during my talk at Video People 2008 was this
  videoblogging list.
I stressed the importance for them to talk to each other, since this is so
new over here that they are the ones defining the medium here in Japan...
so I told them to start a mailing list and start sharing information. Just
  like this one.
So if you read Japanese (though there will be some English speaking folks
on there as well.. heck, some of them are on this list lurking and learning!),
  feel free to join up:
  http://groups.google.com/group/videoblogjapan
Tajee is the moderator, so I know the list is in great hands. Only good can
  come out of this.

I have always dreamed of being able to see personal video come out of
a place like Japan.
It's always good to see how someone like Tajee can be the spark (and
Schlomo to help be the bridge)
I am definitely going to the next Japanese event.
unite!

 For the Solo Video Practitioner:

Your statements here are why I advocate simply keeping the camera (a
 small
camera) within 3 feet of the speaking subject for the solo practitioner
 who
 wants good sound.

I would disagree with this for the HV20 - get an external microphone and you
will get better sound.

Get a microphone that works well within 3 feet of you or less, put it on a
stand outside the range of your shot, do some testing then forget about it.
The videos will sound better.

If you have the option to record straight to your hard drive and skip the
tape, even better.

Yeah but your footage is not handheld. When the cam is on a tripod the
footage in most cases looks great, especially if the scene is well lit.

Now, you were talking about blurring the video instead of sharpening
it?? Did I miss something? I mean those examples looked nice but I am
sure if you would have sharpened them they would look even better.

Also, I noticed a weird thing about youtube yesterday. When I opened
that same resulting video
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exvu8Bqx5vQ)in Internet Exploer 6, the
video looked not as sharp as on Firefox 2. Another thing I noticed is
when you press that little screen button on youtube player on that
video it doesn't scale down. Which made me wonder if youtube is wising
up and finally using the H.264 engine, hence the very sharp video.

What are your thoughts on this guys?

After 2 years of constant search for the ideal compression scheme, I
have finally come to a solution. If you're using Adobe Premiere CS3
and you edit your footage in 16X9 standard definition, simply do the
   following.

   1. Sharpen the video to the point you see some dotty artifacts
appearing in the video (looks like a jpeg still image when highly
   compressed)

   2. Right out of timeline, without even hitting enter to render SD
edited material, go to export, adobe media encoder. Once there under
format choose Windows Media, and under preset NTSC Source to
Download 1024kbps, however, that is not all, we will edit this
  preset
and then save it as a Youtube one for future sweet encoding :)
So now, in the video tab...

   BASIC VIDEO SETTINGS make sure you have the following;
   Allow interlaced processing - unchecked
   Encoding passes - Two
   Bitrate mode - Constant
   Frame W/H 640X480
Frame rate 29.97 but depending on your footage (some people shoot in
   24 frames)
Pixel aspect ration (important) - D1 DV NTSC (0.9) this is 4X3
although the original footage is 16X9

   BITRATE SETTINGS
   Maximum bitrate - 3,739.63 (yes under 4mbps)
   Image quality - 100

   ADVANCED SETTINGS
   Decoder complexity - Main
   Keyframe interval - 5
   Buffer size - Default

   Now go to Audio tab

change Audio format to 192kbps 44 stereo VBR

   3. Hit OK on the bottom (you will see that the estimated file
  size is
beyond 100mb allowed by youtube but don't worry, if you go the
approach described below all will be fine). Save to file to you har
  drive.

   4. Log in to youtube and at the upload page, on the right hand side
you will see a new Multi video uploaded button to upload files
larger than 100MB or upload many files at once!

   That's it! :)

If you have achieved better quality using Premiere CS3 I sure would
   like to hear about it.

   Thanks

That Rode mic looks pretty sweet. Not least because it has 1/8 mini jack,
bypassing the need

What sort of battery life does it get?

2008-02-01 Thread influxxmedia
Just came across this on DVCreators.net

Looks remarkably similar to the Rode many people were raving about.

http://www.dvcreators.net/the-sennheiser-mke-400-shotgun-mic/

--To give you an idea of the size, it's physical length and width is that of
your pinky finger. Yes, that's one
amazingly short shotgun microphone. It's surprisingly directional for such a
small mic. The design team at
Sennheiser was able to innovate while answering the market's request for an
even smaller on-camera mic. They
maintained the same high quality sound since they built the very first shotgun
mic, yes, Sennheiser invented the
interference tube design that all of today's shotgun mics are based on.

This mic is a great upgrade to a stock mic because it improves sound, yet is so
unobtrusive. Attached to a mid sized
camera, I can easily maneuver through a crowd without attracting too much
attention. That's great when you need
to be stealth. Yet you're still getting that high quality sound that Sennheiser
is famous for- and that sound is from
the direction that you're shooting - great for events, Steadicam, ENG, behind
the scenes and documentary style
work. The accessory pack is a must! It adds both the wind stopping long haired
wind muff and an XLR adapter. This
is a must have upgrade to any small camera's stock mic. --

You can also buy shoe shock mounts a la carte for around $30:
http://urltea.com/2mj0

I have the HV20 with one of those shock mounts and this Azden mic:
http://urltea.com/2mj1

It's a nice little set up for under $100. The mic picks up only what you
point it at.

I've found it's necessary to use the external mic at all times. I've only
shot a few things without it, and you can hear the camera mechanism pretty
obviously, like in the first 5 seconds of this video:

Other than this minor flaw, the HV20 is the best little camera I've ever

Also, I noticed a weird thing about youtube yesterday. When I opened

when you press that little screen button on youtube player on that

up and finally using the H.264 engine, hence the very sharp video.

What are your thoughts on this guys?

After 2 years of constant search for the ideal compression
 scheme, I
have finally come to a solution. If you're using Adobe
 Premiere CS3
and you edit your footage in 16X9 standard definition, simply
 do the
following.

1. Sharpen the video to the point you see some dotty artifacts
appearing in the video (looks like a jpeg still image when
 highly
compressed)

2. Right out of timeline, without even hitting enter to
 render SD
edited material, go to export, adobe media encoder. Once
 there under
format choose Windows Media, and under preset NTSC Source to
Download 1024kbps, however, that is not all, we will edit this
   preset
and then save it as a Youtube one for future sweet encoding :)
So now, in the video tab...

BASIC VIDEO SETTINGS make sure you have the following;
Allow interlaced processing - unchecked
Encoding passes - Two
Bitrate mode - Constant
Frame W/H 640X480
Frame rate 29.97 but depending on your footage (some people
 shoot in
24 frames)
Pixel aspect ration (important) - D1 DV NTSC (0.9) this is 4X3
although the original footage is 16X9

BITRATE SETTINGS
Maximum bitrate - 3,739.63 (yes under 4mbps)
Image quality - 100

ADVANCED SETTINGS
Decoder complexity - Main
Keyframe interval - 5
Buffer size - Default

Now go to Audio tab

change Audio format to 192kbps 44 stereo VBR

3. Hit OK on the bottom (you will see that the estimated file
   size is
beyond 100mb allowed by youtube but don't worry, if you go the
approach described below all will be fine). Save to file to
 you har
   drive.

4. Log in to youtube and at the upload page, on the right
 hand side
you will see a new Multi video uploaded button to upload files
larger than 100MB or upload many files at once!

That's it! :)

If you have achieved better quality using Premiere CS3 I sure
 would
like to hear about it.

Thanks

H.so are you saying we need some service to do track these
 conversations?

yes

how does a tracker help me follow conversations across different
 sites?

that might be the wrong question. If you could map link structures
between blogs then the patterns that form, and the clusters (eg your
blog would be a dense node since many others link to it) provide ways
of visualising and *discovering* relationships. There are mapping
tools that already do this well. But if you take this down to the post
level, then things get really interesting. This is because it is all
about granularity, so if you can see that there is a cluster (a series
of connections between parts) then you can discover new things,
precisely because the structures that emerge in blogging (relations
between blog posts) are emergent rather than predetermined or
hierarchical.

If we could quote video, or refer in video to video, then you could do
the same thing in video posts. So my video post which refers to your
post, and Sull's, and Andreas', and is also refered to by 3 other
people, well all these linsk would be available. I could then map
these patterns (zooming up and down), and I could follow them as links
just like the old fashioned web link surfing way.

A tracker helps because it makes visible these connections. t/his is
one of the biggest achievements of blogging - trackback. HTTP as a
protocol sucks at letting you know who connects (links) to your
content. I know who my pages link to - I wrote the links, but how do I
'see' the links in to my page (once again as Mike pointed out, Ted
Nelson saw and described all this in the mid 60s). Trackback partly
solves this, but if a link comes from a site that doesn't support
trackback (any site that isn't a specific type of blog) then I still
don't really know about it (though I can use Google to find links but
that's a very slow way of going about something).

The next step, in relation to text, is to apply a thesaurus, since
then you can use link anchors (what text hte link is from) to get a
metric for how 'abstract' the connections are, where a good and simple
rule of thumb is that the more abstract the link anchor then generally
the more theoretical or abstract (or 'high level') the conversation.
Eg a links that keep going from words like idea' and 'epistemology'
suggest a different sort of discussion and connection than links from
home', 'their blog' etc. YOu can also use the link text to build tag
clouds

(sometimes I really should be snaffled up by some start up)

What are you capturing with? Have you tried HDVSplit?
http://strony.aster.pl/paviko/

That's what I use to capture 24p stuff. Premiere seems to work fine for
regular 1080i footage with no dropped frames (yet).

I haven't had any dropout problems with either tape format though. And I
haven't seen any other noticeable differences in quality, so I'm thinking
I'll just stick with regular DV and save myself a few bucks a tape.

That Rode mic looks pretty sweet. Not least because it has 1/8

What sort of battery life does it get?

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Looking for people to invite to Vlog Europe '08

2008-02-01 Thread Roxanne Darling
I would like to have this on Upcoming; I can create it or you can, so you
can have better control over the details. It helps get the word out and
remind those of us with full brains.
Merci,

Rox

Macadamia nuts are almost more welcome than you are, Rox.

Thanks, for stepping up, ladies. If some or all of you could come, we
 would
be more than thrilled. I am at your disposal for travel help and French
 goodie dispatch.

I too meet the standards of #3 though I realize that may be fully

I do bring aloha and chocolate-covered macadamia nuts though when I

I've got you guys down on the calendar in any case.

  Hi everyone -

Now that we've set dates (October 18-19, Budapest), I'm/we're
   looking to
invite people (or for you to contact people) to let them know
 when
 and where
  the event is.

Here's some ideas foe the kind of people we're looking to
 invite:

  1. Contacts in Hungary are critical (I saw your Tweet Bicycle
  Mark)

  2. People you would LOVE to have there

  3. WOMEN

  4. People from countries we haven't seen represented

  5. EU Bloggers that use video, but wouldn't necessarily call
   themselves
  videobloggers

  6. Anybody that you think would make a good vlogger.

  7. Anybody you think has something to add to the weekend.

People feel special when they're invited, or that some people
 who
 wouldn't
come otherwise would. Any help you can give me here is most
  welcome.

  Cheers,

  J
