[videoblogging] problems with my wordpress blog

2008-02-19 Thread Frank Carver

I don't suppose there are hundreds of people desperate to interact
with my video blog at makevideo.org.uk, but just in case ...

I have had some sort of problem with my Wordpress installation which
started giving 500 errors. To keep the site working, I have now
switched off all the plugins and themes I was using while I look into
upgrading and fixing the problem.

This has two main effects. The first is that the look of my blog has
changed back to the original bland Wordpress blue theme. The second
is that I had to turn off the anti-spam plugin - last night I was
deluged with spam comments, so I have now switcedh comments to full
moderation.

I'd still love anyone to leave a comment, but please be aware that
they will all be hand-checked by me before appearing in public.

I hope normal service will be resumed as soon as I get a few more
hours to properly upgrade the installation.

Sigh.

[videoblogging] wordpress theme/code help?

2008-02-19 Thread David Meade
I'm pretty decent at php and wordpress themes and what not ... but
something is broken on my site and I cannot figure out why. My site
just will not receive pingbacks or trackbacks. It seems to send them
ok, but it doesn't receive them.

I also see no evidence of them in the wp database (so I'm fairly sure
its more than them just not being displayed ... they aren't even in
the database)

Is there anyone who really understands how all that pingback/trackback
stuff works inside wordpress who might be able to help me
troubleshoot?

Thanks in advance,
 - Dave

I just wanted to alert people who are interested in doing video/media
work on Drupal that I've finally had the time to put together some of
the tie-ins that make it possible to create some pretty remarkable
video functionality. Using media_mover [1] to do transcoding of uploaded
videos, xspf_playlist [2] to build dynamic playlists, and flvmediaplayer
[3] to render the player, we can now have a video player which not only
plays user uploaded content, but can both recommend content based on a
views [4] or play a list of content generated by a view [5]. FLV Media
Player [6] will let you take the player and embed it in a page off site
if desired. Further, you can use a dynamic configuration file for the
player which allows you to alter the appearance and behavior of embedded
players already deployed in the field.

Re: [videoblogging] wordpress theme/code help?

2008-02-19 Thread David Meade
I have a gut feeling that the problem relates to using pretty
permalinks. There are functions in wordpress which attempt to get
the post ID from the permalink, and these functions are called when a
pingback comes in.

On my test blog (with default permalink structure) pingbacks work
fine. But at DavidMeade.com where permalinks are in the form of
http://www.davidmeade.com/archives/419 the pingbacks aren't working.
I'm wondering if wordpress is trying to get the post id in some way
that is not compatible with the permalink structure I'm using.

I just don't know enough about this process works to know exactly
where it might be breaking.

Holy crap this sucks.

I was VERY much looking forward to buying an E1 this summer. I've
never had trouble with my old C6, but I'd just about kill for better
sound and low-light performance. Don't think a dead screen after 6
months is worth the trade, though. And a two-month repair wait is
totally bananas.

To David I'd still recommend an old c6. You can get them pretty
cheaply on eBay.

If I do spring for an E1 you'd better believe I'll pay extra for
in-store coverage, which I don't usually do. This time, though, it
seems essential.

Damn. What a bummer.

2008-02-19 Thread Steve Watkins
I guess the slow glinding way to find the problem is to keep adding
functionality to your
test site until it exhibits the same problem. Ive had a brief go at sniffing
for relevent bugs
that may be due to fancy permalinks/clean url's, but I only found old bugs that
shouldnt
be relevent anymore:

http://www.thunderguy.com/semicolon/2005/07/26/wordpress-pingback-and-
trackback/

A lot of people like pretty permalinks, Id be surprised if it were a bug that
affects
everyone, maybe its a certain combination of stuff?

Are you using pretty permalinks in the standard wordpress way?

Cheers

[videoblogging] Ultracart or other way of subscriber-only vlogging success?

2008-02-19 Thread Chuck
Hi All,

In the quest to monetize (a.k.a. pay the rent) I have set up a great
wp plugin (EasyPayPal - http://www.voiceoftech.com/swhitley/index.php/?
page_id=129) to allow subscribers to pay to see video content. Works
great (you can see it here http://sqlserverdvd.com/on-demand/), but it
is binary. Either you can't see any content, or you can see all...I
want to have access be more granular to permit discrete video purchases.

I'm thinking about using ultracart (http://www.ultracart.com/) and may
now have to read up on cgi scripting a bit to interact with ultracart's
API.

Has anyone used ultracart to facilitate secure vlogging or any other
way of securing video to subscribers only?

Have you checked in with your web host's support service or forums?

I use Dreamhost, and every once in awhile something happens that seems
to be unique to their hosting service. I can't remember any exact
example, but I think I recall something with pretty permalinks and the
way my server handled mod_rewrite (it was on but not working as
expected). I ended up making a custom mod to my .htaccess file to fix
it. Another time I found the solution to a host/plugin incompatibility
in the forums.

Once I had to edit my xmlrpc file to get my site to accept crossposts

[videoblogging] Apple TV vs. iPod/iPhone Recommendations?

2008-02-19 Thread Ryan Ozawa
Aloha mai!

Just got a blast from Apple on recommended settings for video podcasts
to look good on the Apple TV as well as their portable devices. It
got me to thinking what y'all might be using to hit the best sweet
spot between Apple's obviously biased recommendations and greatest
compatibility or usability out there.

For example, I've been posting HD vlog entries at 720x1280, 24fps,
3000kbps, H.264/AAC in my feed, though the blog item itself definitely
includes links to dozens of other versions (including the even more
proprietary but darn good looking DiVX). Of course, these settings
are Apple TV specific, and exclude 5th gen video iPods and iPhones.

From the Apple TV e-mail, it looks like 640x360 is what they're
recommending for the widescreen aspect for both Apple TV and
iPods/iPhones, but... won't that look less clear than the full 720?
Or is it possible that with the right settings, 640x360 would look
passably good on the widest range of devices.

And do these settings create specific headaches for non-Apple users?
Or, at this point, can most users play with these MPEG-4 files?

The Apple TV e-mail is below!

-- Begin forwarded message --

Recommendations to help you create the best possible experience for users:

1. Apple TV viewers are immediately aware of video quality. If you
encode your video podcast at 320x240, we strongly encourage you to
increase the resolution to 640x480 or 640x360 (depending on the aspect
ratio of your source files). When encoded well, video podcasts at this
resolution look great on Apple TV and still play on iPhone and
video-compatible iPods. To ensure compatibility, we recommend that you
encode using QuickTime's Movie to iPod preset or Compressor's Apple
Apple Devices H.264 for iPod video and iPhone 640x480 preset.

2. When you perform the final encode on your video, enable fast
starting. Most recent versions of QuickTime enable this setting
automatically. But it's easy to undo the setting by making changes to
the file after the encode. If you do make a change after the encode,
be sure to Save As again.

3. Apple TV displays a large version of the podcast art (the file
referenced in the itunes:image tag). We recommend that you use a
600x600 square JPG or PNG file.

4. Several new introductory video tutorials have been developed for
iTunes, including one for podcasts. If your web site offers how-to
information for new podcast users, please consider linking to it.

Or, at this point, can most users play with these MPEG-4 files?

apple hasnt always thought about the larger web community when they
come up with apple standards.
its always good to be the king.

I thought this was an interesting video they included in their email:

[videoblogging] Re: Apple TV vs. iPod/iPhone Recommendations?

2008-02-19 Thread Steve Watkins
640x360 is a good compromise resolution, not a bad balance between res, bitrate

filesize, and device compatibility.

It will be passable to many people on a larger screen via Apple TV, but your
720p version
should be noticably better.

There are still some users devices that will struggle with h264 in general,
but most will
be ok with 640xwhatever videos. 1280x720 or higher, some will struggle with
cpu use,
and such high resolutions are likely a hinderance rather than a help to
portable device
users.

But also bear in mind that the tone of that email suggests Apple is desperate
to get people
to move beyond 320x240 more, as that low a res starts to look bad on the Apple
TV. So
they are mostly targetting people to move their res up, not down.

Jay that Apple video loks like quicktime, at a guess they have hidden the
quicktime plugin
controls and used javascript to make nicer looking controls.

Cheers

Re: [videoblogging] Another Wordpress question

Every time I create a new post on my blog, Wordpress wants to put a date on
 it. Is it possible
to override that feature? I'd like to replace the date with simple text. (I
 don't care if my posts
are still organized by date, I just want to display text in the place that
 the date normally
  appears)

we may be misunderstanding you.
like Charles says, you can just make pages...which are static.
Or you can write Posts...and simply hide the date.

the Date (along with tags, categories, etc) is used to help the blog
know how to order all the new content.
you can certainly hide the date on posts.
I dont show dates on my blog: http://momentshowing.net
