[videoblogging] Video editing on Linux?
I'm swapping back to Linux on my laptop, and although I'll keep Windows on my desktop (my main video editing machine), I will be using the lappy to do some video stuff when I'm away from home. I'm wondering of anybody here uses Linux, and if so what you're using to edit video. I never did find anything decent for photo or video work (GIMP just doesn't cut it for me, I'm a Photoshop girl). Re: [videoblogging] Re: SXSW
I really, REALLY want to go but the company I work for nixed my trip last week. I'm costing it out to see if I want to take a week of vacation and pay for the whole thing myself. Can you guys tell me where you're staying (or just your expected accomodation costs)? Now, the trick is to get a passport issued in time. Re: [videoblogging] joost
I feel like Joost is lacking something. Maybe it's a critical mass of participating community (the channel chats are usually pretty empty), maybe it's more of the sort of content I'd watch, maybe it's more varied types of interaction with the content. I'd like to be able to research/buy/demo the things I'm watching instantly, without leaving the Joost client, post clips I'm watching to my blog (admittedly, there are copyright issues with that one). One of the best things about Vegas besides that it is an absolute rock solid program is that you can drag and drop pretty much everything. You can load in HDV and SD - 24p, or 30i, and edit them all together on the same time line - it just doesn't really care. I had the total opposite reaction to Vegas. I found it counter-intuitive and frustrating to the point where I wanted to kick anybody responsible for developing it. I'm hyper computer literate, I've had a computer all my life (now I have 4, running various flavours of Linux and Windows), I work at a web startup. Admittedly, I hit Vegas with a pretty strong bias for Premiere (which I was already used to), perhaps if I'd tried it without any previous expectations about where functionality should be found I might have picked it up faster. Speaking of Premiere, I'll second the comment that most people only need Premiere Elements. It's around 1/10th the cost, and has all the functionality that most videobloggers will need. Nox It's fast and it's easy. Most video editors come from a couple of different lines - AVID - to Premiere - to Final Cut - which accounts for why they all work pretty much the same and have the same look. Vegas came from a sound program - Sound Forge, so it didn't really think like what most people were familiar with. But if you work on it for an hour or two, it becomes clear why it's so much fun. Re: [videoblogging] Re: Input from the community?
Jan, I wasn't clear about the winnings. I took the lazy route and wrote $10k rather than adding the zeros. The winners in both Naughty and Nice categories will get $10,000. Would it be more appealing if we removed the whole wish granting aspect and just made it about who could produce the best/funniest/most amazing video? I do also agree that having people pay to submit is probably not the best revenue model, but it was discussed before I began working with the company and much of the team consider it a done deal already. The benefit is that we're trying to encourage higher quality submissions, and having to shell out the $5 means a person has to have some confidence that their submission stands a chance at winning. Thanks for the comments. (And apologies about the laziness typing numbers and URLs.) Nox On 12/15/06, Jan / The Faux Press [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Am not inspired by the concept in the least. [videoblogging] Anyone want to win $10,000 US?
The Robinhood Fund is giving away $20,000 US for Xmas ($10k to a nice wish and $10k to a naughty wish). Wish granting is based on community votes, and each wish can include a link to a supporting video (which will up your chance of winning). So if anyone wants new gear, a trip to somewhere cool to make videos, or stuff that's totally unrelated to vlogging, pull together a quick video and go for it. So far it doesn't look like there are many people who can craft an entry as funny or vote-worthy as most vloggers. Re: [videoblogging] Blip iTunes feed using secondary iPod files?
I guess I wasn't clear. I do upload a second file for iPods. I upload a large and small Quicktime file and an MP4 that is run through some transcoder called Super on its default iPod settings. I just wasn't sure if the iPod file or the first one I upload (the large Quicktime file, so that it is the one transcoded to Flash) is the one being offered if people subscribe with portable devices. I think I've come up with a workaround, with the help of Mike from Blip. I have 2 Feedburner feeds set up, one set up with the input feed from Blip set to indicate MP4 as the primary enclosure format ( http://noxdineen.blip.tv/posts/?skin=rssfile_format=mp4) and one set to grab the primary file. Blip tells me they're working on offering multiple feeds. Because they're AWESOME! Nox On 12/2/06, sull [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: you should upload a video that is already encoded to work with ipods until blip offers specialzed transcoding services. right now, as far as i know, they only transcode to flv. you could ask blip if/when they plan to offer more transcoding services for ipods, psp and so on... until then, you should transcode to your target devices and then upload. there are many client-side apps that are free and let you do this. blips feeds are itunes compatible but it only uses the video you upload to them. sull On 12/2/06, Nox Dineen [EMAIL PROTECTED] nox.groups%40gmail.com wrote: If I upload a second version of my videos, optimized for iPods, is that the video that Blip uses for iTunes, or does it just use the original whopping large Quicktime file for that? [videoblogging] Video quality in Premiere Elements
I use Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 followed by QuickTime Pro (and sometimes a freeware converter called Super to make videos for MP3/iPod players). I just switched to shooting in widescreen, and had some trouble getting Elements to accept it. I was able to change the default options for new projects to widescreen. No problem, the new project opened with the little video placeholder frames in the sceneline view set to 16:9 ration. But when I tried to add a clip in widescreen format Premiere squished it into 4:3 and added black bars at the side. :( I managed to get the clip widescreened (I can't seem to find the menu option that I used, now that I'm looking for it). But the video quality is terrible. I know I changed something to do with pixel ratio, and based on the lousy output quality I have to believe that was the wrong way to do it. So... anyone know how to get Premiere to believe me that my 16:9 clips really are widescreen? Many thanks, Nox [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Re: [videoblogging] Re: Video quality in Premiere Elements
My camcorder (a JVC Everio) was set to widescreen when I shot. When Premiere Elements tries to make the clip 4:3 I look all compressed and it's obviously squished (not that I don't love how skinny it makes me look, but...). If I click on Interpret Footage the pixel aspect from file seems to be D1/DV NSTC (0.9). I can force it to conform to D1/DV NTSC Widscreen (1.2) looks correct after making that change. I guess I will have to manually tell Premiere Elements that each clip is actually widescreen. What a pain in the rear. Thank you for your help, both David and Paul.
