[videoblogging] Video editing on Linux?

2007-02-24 Thread Nox Dineen
I'm swapping back to Linux on my laptop, and although I'll keep
Windows on my desktop (my main video editing machine), I will be using
the lappy to do some video stuff when I'm away from home.

I'm wondering of anybody here uses Linux, and if so what you're using
to edit video. I never did find anything decent for photo or video
work (GIMP just doesn't cut it for me, I'm a Photoshop girl).

Thanks,
Nox

I really, REALLY want to go but the company I work for nixed my trip last
week.

I'm costing it out to see if I want to take a week of vacation and pay for
the whole thing myself. Can you guys tell me where you're staying (or just
your expected accomodation costs)?

Now, the trick is to get a passport issued in time. Thanks to the Americans
requiring one from Canadian citizens now our passport office is swamped and
taking months to issued documents. :(

Thanks,
Nox

Re: [videoblogging] joost

2007-02-22 Thread Nox Dineen
I feel like Joost is lacking something.

Maybe it's a critical mass of participating community (the channel chats are
usually pretty empty), maybe it's more of the sort of content I'd watch,
maybe it's more varied types of interaction with the content. I'd like to be
able to research/buy/demo the things I'm watching instantly, without leaving
the Joost client, post clips I'm watching to my blog (admittedly, there are
copyright issues with that one).

Right now it isn't much different than sitting in front of my TV with a
laptop for web communications at the same time.

Looks great, though, I do have to give them that.

Vegas is really wonderful. You can get the vegas studio version which
is less complex, but honestly, Vegas is so intuitive - that people can
use it immediately. One of the best things about Vegas besides that
it is an absolute rock solid program is that you can drag and drop
pretty much everything. You can load in HDV and SD - 24p, or 30i, and
edit them all together on the same time line - it just doesn't really
 care.

I had the total opposite reaction to Vegas. I found it counter-intuitive and
frustrating to the point where I wanted to kick anybody responsible for
developing it. I'm hyper computer literate, I've had a computer all my life
(now I have 4, running various flavours of Linux and Windows), I work at a
web startup. Admittedly, I hit Vegas with a pretty strong bias for Premiere
(which I was already used to), perhaps if I'd tried it without any previous
expectations about where functionality should be found I might have picked
it up faster.

Speaking of Premiere, I'll second the comment that most people only need
Premiere Elements. It's around 1/10th the cost, and has all the
functionality that most videobloggers will need.

Nox

It's fast and it's easy. Most video editors come from a couple of
different lines - AVID - to Premiere - to Final Cut - which accounts
for why they all work pretty much the same and have the same look.
Vegas came from a sound program - Sound Forge, so it didn't really
think like what most people were familiar with. But if you work on it
for an hour or two, it becomes clear why it's so much fun. Of course,
 your mileage may vary.

I can't participate myself because you have to be a US resident (yeah, I

2006-12-15 Thread Nox Dineen
Jan, I wasn't clear about the winnings. I took the lazy route and wrote $10k
rather than adding the zeros. The winners in both Naughty and Nice
categories will get $10,000.

Would it be more appealing if we removed the whole wish granting aspect and
just made it about who could produce the best/funniest/most amazing video?

I do also agree that having people pay to submit is probably not the best
revenue model, but it was discussed before I began working with the company
and much of the team consider it a done deal already. The benefit is that
we're trying to encourage higher quality submissions, and having to shell
out the $5 means a person has to have some confidence that their submission
stands a chance at winning.

Thanks for the comments. (And apologies about the laziness typing numbers
and URLs.)

[videoblogging] Anyone want to win $10,000 US?

2006-12-11 Thread Nox Dineen
The Robinhood Fund is giving away $20,000 US for Xmas ($10k to a nice wish
and $10k to a naughty wish). Wish granting is based on community votes,
and each wish can include a link to a supporting video (which will up your
chance of winning).

So if anyone wants new gear, a trip to somewhere cool to make videos, or
stuff that's totally unrelated to vlogging, pull together a quick video and
go for it. So far it doesn't look like there are many people who can craft
an entry as funny or vote-worthy as most vloggers.

Or you can feel free to vote for my MacBook Pro wish.

Hey all! I'm new to the Yahoo Videoblogging Group- just found out
about it a few weeks ago… such a great resource! I've seen several
posts recently about Veoh Networks and, since I work for the
 company,
I thought I'd give you an inside look at who we are and what we're
trying to accomplish.

First- just a little bit about myself. I don't come from a corporate
background; my background is in television news. I left that
 business
because it lacked the creative freedom I needed. About a year ago I
started doing independent projects where I had complete control
 of the
content and production quality. Then, this past summer, I discovered
videoblogging. This literally changed everything for me. Finally, a
way for creators to show their projects as they originally intended-
without editors or news directors getting in the way! I was
 instantly
hooked and started a daily videoblog that I taped out of my backyard
called Anchor in PJs- where I talked about silly news headlines in
my pajamas (episodes are still available at Veoh.comhttp://veoh.com/
  http://veoh.com/).

I discovered Veoh after videoblogging for about two months. I
 emailed
Veoh and told them about my show. Less than 24 hours later, I was
sitting in their office answering questions about how they could
better serve people producing content for the internet. A couple
 weeks
later, they offered me a job as their Publisher Advocate. At the
same time, I was talking with a couple other video sharing sites
 about
a possible partnership. So, I had to seriously consider my
 options. I
was determined to go with the company that I felt had the most to
offer creators. I chose Veoh.

It's no secret, Veoh isn't the first pretty girl at the party.
Videobloggers already have a list of preferred sites and new video
sharing sites are popping up everyday. It's been a challenge to
differentiate our company from everyone else. Our official marketing
statement is this We provide the easiest way for high-quality video
creators to find their audience online. So what exactly does that
mean? It means we're not YouTube and were not just a video sharing
site. We believe there are a large group of creators out there that
don't fit what mainstream media is currently looking for. We
 provide a
place for those creators on all ends of the spectrum to showcase
 their
work. Everything from network pilot shows who never had a chance to
air their full season - to cooking shows your Aunt Gertrude produces
as part of her videoblog. We're reinventing television by
 eliminating
the filters behind mainstream media. We give you the platform
 and you
produce the product.

By focusing our product toward creators, Veoh is poising itself to
become a very successful company. Veoh has an incredible staff

Re: [videoblogging] Veoh: Reinventing Television

2006-12-04 Thread Nox Dineen
What are the odds?! I just logged into my email account to post a question
about Veoh, hopefully you can help.

I turned on the feature that allows Veoh to collect videos from my RSS feed
and post them, and I want to turn it off. I have emailed support several
times without receiving a reply, combed the FAQ and user panel, and I can't
figure out how to get Veoh to *stop* collecting my videos.

Thanks,

Hey all! I'm new to the Yahoo Videoblogging Group- just found out
about it a few weeks ago… such a great resource! I've seen several
posts recently about Veoh Networks and, since I work for the company,
I thought I'd give you an inside look at who we are and what we're
 trying to accomplish.

First- just a little bit about myself. I don't come from a corporate
background; my background is in television news. I left that business
because it lacked the creative freedom I needed. About a year ago I
started doing independent projects where I had complete control of the
content and production quality. Then, this past summer, I discovered
videoblogging. This literally changed everything for me. Finally, a
way for creators to show their projects as they originally intended-
without editors or news directors getting in the way! I was instantly
hooked and started a daily videoblog that I taped out of my backyard
called Anchor in PJs- where I talked about silly news headlines in
my pajamas (episodes are still available at Veoh.com http://veoh.com/).

I discovered Veoh after videoblogging for about two months. I emailed
Veoh and told them about my show. Less than 24 hours later, I was
sitting in their office answering questions about how they could
better serve people producing content for the internet. A couple weeks
later, they offered me a job as their Publisher Advocate. At the
same time, I was talking with a couple other video sharing sites about
a possible partnership. So, I had to seriously consider my options. I
was determined to go with the company that I felt had the most to
 offer creators.

We provide a
place for those creators on all ends of the spectrum to showcase their
work. Everything from network pilot shows who never had a chance to
air their full season - to cooking shows your Aunt Gertrude produces
as part of her videoblog. We're reinventing television by eliminating
the filters behind mainstream media. We give you the platform and you
 produce the product.

By focusing our product toward creators, Veoh is poising itself to
become a very successful company. Veoh has an incredible staff (truly
the best of the best in television, marketing and engineering) with
nearly 50 employees in offices such as San Diego, Los Angeles and St.
Petersburg, Russia. Just having investors such as Michael Eisner
(former CEO of Disney) and Time Warner proves that we have a great
product and a bright future. Having said that, people don't usually
become successful without making a few mistakes along the way. The
important thing is you learn from your mistakes and you don't make
them again. The truth is, I don't know what mistakes Veoh has made in
the past, but I do know they're making every effort to build this
company and network the right way. As Publisher Advocate, it's my job
to ensure those mistakes aren't made in the future.

I've been involved in media all my life. Nothing has given me more
satisfaction than working with Veoh to help publishers succeed in a
new and evolving medium. I absolutely love my job. That's the honest
truth- there is no smoke and mirrors. Please contact me and let me
know what I can do to help you succeed. We'll do everything we can to
 make it happen.

[videoblogging] Blip iTunes feed using secondary iPod files?

2006-12-02 Thread Nox Dineen
If I upload a second version of my videos, optimized for iPods, is that the
video that Blip uses for iTunes, or does it just use the original whopping
large Quicktime file for that?

Is there that I can offer 2 feeds, one to the original Quicktime and one to
the iPod MP4 files?

Thanks,
Nox

Re: [videoblogging] Blip iTunes feed using secondary iPod files?

2006-12-02 Thread Nox Dineen
I guess I wasn't clear. I do upload a second file for iPods. I upload a
large and small Quicktime file and an MP4 that is run through some
transcoder called Super on its default iPod settings. I just wasn't sure if
the iPod file or the first one I upload (the large Quicktime file, so that
it is the one transcoded to Flash) is the one being offered if people
subscribe with portable devices.

I think I've come up with a workaround, with the help of Mike from Blip. I
have 2 Feedburner feeds set up, one set up with the input feed from Blip set
to indicate MP4 as the primary enclosure format (
http://noxdineen.blip.tv/posts/?skin=rssfile_format=mp4) and one set to
grab the primary file.

Blip tells me they're working on offering multiple feeds. Because they're
AWESOME!

until then, you should transcode to your target devices and then upload.
there are many client-side apps that are free and let you do this.
blips feeds are itunes compatible but it only uses the video you upload to

[videoblogging] Video quality in Premiere Elements

2006-11-26 Thread Nox Dineen
I use Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 followed by QuickTime Pro (and sometimes a
freeware converter called Super to make videos for MP3/iPod players). I just
switched to shooting in widescreen, and had some trouble getting Elements to
accept it.

I was able to change the default options for new projects to widescreen. No
problem, the new project opened with the little video placeholder frames in
the sceneline view set to 16:9 ration. But when I tried to add a clip in
widescreen format Premiere squished it into 4:3 and added black bars at the
side. :(

I managed to get the clip widescreened (I can't seem to find the menu option
that I used, now that I'm looking for it). But the video quality is
terrible. I know I changed something to do with pixel ratio, and based on
the lousy output quality I have to believe that was the wrong way to do it.

So... anyone know how to get Premiere to believe me that my 16:9 clips
really are widescreen?

Many thanks,
Nox

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Video quality in Premiere Elements

2006-11-26 Thread Nox Dineen
My camcorder (a JVC Everio) was set to widescreen when I shot. When Premiere
Elements tries to make the clip 4:3 I look all compressed and it's obviously
squished (not that I don't love how skinny it makes me look, but...). If I
click on Interpret Footage the pixel aspect from file seems to be D1/DV NSTC
(0.9). I can force it to conform to D1/DV NTSC Widscreen (1.2) looks correct
after making that change.

I guess I will have to manually tell Premiere Elements that each clip is
actually widescreen. What a pain in the rear.

Thank you for your help, both David and Paul.

If you are sure you are shooting in widescreen, try right clicking on
the file in the Available Media and select Interpret Footage. That
 should do it.
