I don't get it. The silence from this group is deafening? You're accusing us of being hypocritical? Of hollow words to market another dotcom product or service? One email at 3.00, asking if any vloggers are nearby, then a link to a million-viewed Youtube video at 7.00, then you post at 8.00 all hostile. If your point is Why Didn't We Discuss This Before, then why didn't you bring it up before, instead of just sitting on your hands, silently getting angry about the deafening silence from this group? Personally, until Heath's post, which I read after reading yours, I didn't know anything about it - first news I heard of it in the UK was last night, and there was no mention of videoblogging or the web as a crucial part of the story. And you know what, I didn't find out from your unhelpfully toned and negative message. This isn't a rolling news discussion group. If you think something is worthy of discussion, bring it up. Don't sit silent and then accuse everyone else of being dishonest or hypocritical for doing the same. OK, with exception to folks outside the US this story was out there on the net, blogs, myspace, youtube. I heard about the Jena 6 story through Pacifica radio. For who those that don't know. That's the PBS(public broadcast station) of radio. t was like someone was t sleep at the wheel when this thing was making its round on the net. Yes this is not a virtual newsdesk group but it does relate to videoblogging in a indirect way. Local news broadcast from the area of the incident was posted blogs, myspace, youtube and so on. Is this group resting on its past laurels. Wasn't one of the many reasons we joined this list was to challenge the system to do things that the mainstream media wasn't capable of or motivated in doing. Has this group fallen off.(not literally) It's not about the technology it about the people behind and in front of the camera. I loved this group because it felt like we were pushing the envelope and using video in an innovative way. I can't blame this group for anything. It's just a reflection of the attitudes of the off-line world. There's much diversity. The issues is no different that you find in blogisphere and podcasting community. The only thing that left for me to feel excited for is the technology innovations. Outside that it has been ho hum discussion wise. I use to look forward to reading the discussions in group. It felt like a community of smart, caring people who wanted to use technology to shake things up. I guess I was just being a bit naive. Nobody cares about anything anymore. Have we become apathetic narcissist. I this might sound negative, buts it not. My heart is a bleeding just one that is sick of the ways things are. I have tried to believe in the goodness of people and thought would get better.(this is a general statement about the world as a whole) They haven't gotten any better of course unless you one of the privileged few. There no more Ghandi, Martin, Malcolm, Bobby, John John or Theodore. Where are our heroes for the 21st century. Will they emerge from a unlikely source like this group? The reason people rioted about the Rodney King situation was *NOT* because the cops kicked his ass lovely. It was because everyone on the planet SAW WITH THEIR OWN EYES what happened, and the people that this has been happening to their entire lives and the entire lives of their parents and grandparents were looking forward to ONE TIME seeing a proper prosecution of clearly illegal behavior and punishment handed down. The System said FUCK YOU, and that one time EVER that they were going to see consequences and repercussions slipped from the grasp of the people looking forward to it, and they lost their minds. Same thing with OJ. Lots of people swore up and down he was going to get convicted, and then when he didn't, there was no release of the built-up pressure, and people remain mad about it to this day. Same thing with Michael Vick. Lots of people are mad about his dog fighting/killing shenanigans. If he were to somehow WALK without going to jail AND get back in the NFL ASAP, people would feel pressurized and mad. The point is... Yeah, Jena 6 is an horrific situation. Yeah, IRL, it's way way way worse than the Feldman situation. The reason people rioted about the Rodney King situation was *NOT* because the cops kicked his ass lovely. It was because everyone on the planet SAW WITH THEIR OWN EYES what happened, and the people that this has been happening to their entire lives and the entire lives of their parents and grandparents were looking forward to ONE TIME seeing a proper prosecution of clearly illegal behavior and punishment handed down. The System said FUCK YOU, and that one time EVER that they were going to see consequences and repercussions slipped from the grasp of the people looking forward to it, and they lost their minds. Same thing with OJ. Lots of people swore up and down he was going to get convicted, and then when he didn't, there was no release of the built-up pressure, and people remain mad about it to this day. Same thing with Michael Vick. Lots of people are mad about his dog fighting/killing shenanigans. If he were to somehow WALK without going to jail AND get back in the NFL ASAP, people would feel pressurized and mad. The point is... Yeah, Jena 6 is an horrific situation.

I don't think this email list is marketing anything. ? This list - while we do at times go off on long and fervent tangents - isn't necessarily a recap of all the topics being discussed out there in the vlog-o-sphere. The youtube video is (as youtube videos often are) a good example of internet video giving power to the people, and just because this list isnt a flutter about a given topic doesn't mean that nobody is out there using video to get that message out. After all people can be champions of giving a voice to the voiceless even if they themselves don't speak up on every single issue worthy of a voice in every medium possible. Especially now that youtube is so big ... I don't know that is fair to try and judge if video is getting the word out about some given topic based on the actual discussion of that topic in this list - or even by videos published by the (now comparatively small number of) producers that do in fact frequent this list. Also ... I've been on a low information diet lately so I've fallen behind on the discussions here, but it seems to me alot of the stuff we used to talk about here has moved to places like twitter. Anyway ... I'm not saying the topic isn't deserving of alot of attention ... but I'm not sure content discussions in this list is a fair representation of how much attention its getting within the online video community ... and thus shouldn't condemn this list to be categorized as marketing fluff. I've just posted a number of videos from folks who are telling the story from their own perspective. That is what we all have been collectively working toward. We now have the ability to compare and contrast what is being said about a particular situation. I don't need Jesse, Al or anybody else standing and speaking when I can watch and listen from the grassroots level. This is tool cool. Did you feel it, the shift? This is real life, not an so called comedy routine. Folks are doing what the technology allows them to do, express an opinion about a current event that impacts a segment of the American population. Ding! Ding! Ding! Freedom of Speech, Expression and Right of Assembly. More videos will be posted and not all of them are going to be ripped off of NBC, CNN and other news sources. Does it warrant discussion from the group? Yes, if you want. As a matter of fact there was a lady yesterday asking about documentary videos. Here you go. vlogging documentation. We don't give equal weight to injustice. We pick and chose what we feel is important. I watched a gentlemen on the news and he said in short ,it's shouldn't be looked at as a black or white thing it but an American thing. We should be all up in arms. Anytime one American citixen liberty is at risk of being taken away we all loss. Democracy becomes a running joke and we look like fools pretending like its antthing else but that. If they come after one segment of the population do you think they will stop there. It's like the rolling snowball down a hill. It's history repeating itself like in Bill Murray movie Groundhog Day. Things have reverted back to semi pre-civil rights attitudes and conditions. This groups talks on issues from time to time and it can get crazy. It's cool. It make for interesting reading. I just find it funny how folks pick and chose what deserving of attention. I would think people would be proud the net has come into play in giving voice to the voiceless. The mass media would have easily buried like countless of this nature but the people weren't having it. The news bureaus got flooded with calls and emails. Pointblank the people made this news story grow legs.
