Hey hey Danette Here are my faves: Baghdad Blogger (Filmakers Library) I live in Baghdad. I am a blogger. So begins this succinct report from Salam Pax, an Iraqi journalist who attempts to keep the world informed about his beleaguered country. Pax regularly sends fifteen-minute video reports to the BBC. Known under his pseudonymous name The Baghdad Blog, he writes an online English-language journal of life before, during and since the U.S. invasion of Iraq. He is troubled by the inability of the Americans to maintain a stable occupation and the failure of the interim government and new Iraqi army. Iran: The Cyber Dissidents (Filmakers Library) Documents the recent history and current state of the reformist movement in Iran. Discusses how the internet has given new life to a reformist movement that has deteriorated due to threats of arrest, imprisonment, torture, and death. Primarily follows Farid, a cyber-dissident who has become a leader of the opposition via his website. 2005. 26 min. Afro@digital (California Newsreel) Looks as the information technology revolution which has become a daily reality in many African countries where the Internet, mobile telephones and digital video cameras are being used with extraordinary creativity. Visits a marabout who explains he no longer replies by letter to questions but uses his mobile phone and email to transmit his advice. Another illustration of the digital revolution in Africa is the rise of internet cafes and cyber teahouses. In some towns in Senegal and the Congo, increasing numbers are connecting to internet using a laptop computer with a mobile phone. North-South.com (Nordsud.com) (Icarus Films) Documentary that explores how young women in the African Republic of Cameroon use internet cafés to search for marriage prospects in Europe to escape poverty. Interviews many of these young women who see Europe as a paradise, and who express incredibly naïve beliefs about European men. The film also tells the stories of several Cameroonian women who married white Europeans, showing their current situations, the cultural differences with which they deal, and the personal sacrifices they made in exchange for economic security. A film by François Ducat. 2007. 90 min. Fox and Universal also started this with Redbox and Netflix in April, and I believe it's still in force. Hi Danette, I think Landmark's newest release, Letters from Iranhttp://landmarkmmedia.com/letterswould be a perfect fit about in the ways populations are employing new media technologies. The Iranians were the first to tweet; they used Facebook and posted YouTube updates after the 2009 elections. Our film pulls it all together showing how difficult it was to get their story out, but they certainly tried. This is basically what we have also done here at USC with a number of films that have been released together in both DVD and BluRay formats-- including *The Tree of Life*, *Barney's Version*, etc. Our policy is essentially is not to collect films in BluRay, but when when these double format versions provide the only access to obtaining a film in DVD, some compromise seems to be called for. Re: [Videolib] Studios with embargos
And then there's this news that kind of ties all the aforementioned together: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2398480,00.asp An organized front against (primarily) Netflix (but also Redbox, etc.), may screw libraries in the process, that is, if an exemption isn't made - but, if money is money, and the movie ecosystem must fight to find a way to feed itself (so as to produce), libraries might be seen as a necessary casualty a speck of a fleck on a larger animal they hope to restrain. Interesting (socio-culturally, etc.) that studios are taking a very aggresive stance now with technology (embodied in this case by Netflix, streaming, and different access and release methods, etc.), and are attempting to shape or direct its course rather than sitting back and reacting to it. Showing them who's boss. Or attempting to at least. I wonder it they will cut it even further to the root and reactionarily devolve somewhat in the process by not releasing some films (such as the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises - which Cristopher Nolan has spoken of as designed to be an optimal Theatrical experience and a reminder of what makes the movie-going experience so unique) on DVD until later than usual. That would be, admittedly, reactionary and perhaps seen as more a punishment to fans than providers such as Netflix, but it might not be so farfetched to seem them try to truly take more control of their product, and at the points where they have a more firm hold. ben malczewski Adult Reference Librarian Ypsilanti District Library Ann Arbor, MI 48105 bmal...@aol.com -Original Message- From: Brown, Roger rbr...@oid.ucla.edu To: videolib videolib@lists.berkeley.edu Sent: Tue, Jan 10, 2012 12:53 pm Subject: Re: [Videolib] Studios with embargos Fox and Universal also started this with Redbox and Netflix in April, and I believe it's still in force. Pay special attention to the disclaimer Had a disturbing book cross my desk this afternoon at the library: http://www.amazon.com/Lillian-Gish-Handbook-Everything-about/dp/1743040520/ref=sr_1_1?s=booksie=UTF8qid=1326238509sr=1-1 The title is The Lillian Gish Handbook, Everything you need to know about Lillian Gish. Wow! I was very excited until I actually looked at the book. Apparently Ms. Smith has taken Lillian's Wikipedia/Wikimedia page, plus every page from her films, printed them out, and published them as a book. I kid you not. The disclaimer on the first page reads: The content within this book was generated collaboratively by volunteers. Please be advised that nothing found here has necessarily been reviewed by people with the expertise required to provide you with complete, accurate or reliable information. Some information in this book maybe misleading or simply wrong. The publisher does not guarantee the validity of the information found here. If you need specific advice (for example, medical, legal, financial, or risk management) please seek a professional who is licensed or knowledgeable in that area. EXCUSE ME?! I am in shock. I guess I should be pleased that the author put this disclaimer in at all. We are all aware of books which could use this exact same paragraph. And no, PVG is not the publisher, Tebbo is. She has also written books on Mila Kunis, Sylvester Stallone, Woody Allen, Jennifer Connelly, Jennifer Lawrence, Cody Simpson, Chloe Grace Moretz, Melissa McCarthy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Adam Sandler, Nina Dobrev, Steve Carell, Zooey Deschanel, Alexander Skarsgard, Lacey Chabert, Mayim Bialik, Johnny Galecki, Ryan Gosling, Tom Hiddleston, Claire Danes, Zachary Levi, Will Ferrell, Robert Downey Jr, Robert Pattison, Jeremy Renner, Kristen Wiig, Clark Gable, Ginger Rogers, Elizabeth Taylor, Gerard Butler, Dwayne Johnson, Emma Stone, Ian Somerhalder, Matthew Macfadyen, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jame McAvoy, Amber Heard, Burt Lancaster, Liam Hemsworth, Milla Jovovich, Joan Crawford, Judy Garland, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Orlando Bloom, William Holden, Sophia Loren, Kaley Cuoco, Kristen Stewart, Rachel McAdams, Kate Beckinsale, Jason Bateman, Barbara Stanwyck, Julie Christie, Matt Damon, James Dean, Mark Wahlberg, Tom Hardy, Vin Diesel, Shia LaBeouf, Rita Hayworth, Jennifer Aniston, Naomi Watts, Robert Mitchum, Diane Keaton, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anna Faris, Gary Cooper, Carole Lombard, Claudette Colbert, Gene Kelly, (BREATHE), Jason Statham, Chris Evans, Walter Matthau, Akshay Kumar, Tom Cruise, Jim Parsons, James Cagney, Bette Davis, Robert Redford, Amitabh Bachchan, Camilla Belle, Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Sidney Poitier, Charlie Chaplin, Christian Bale, Spencer Tracy, Ranbir Kapoor, Michell Pfeiffer, Ava Gardner, Gregory Peck, John Wayne, Mary Pickford, Kevin Costner, Shirley MacLaine, Laurence Olivier, Greta Garbo, Michael Douglas, Frances McDormand, Ingrid Bergman, Eddy Murphy, Ed Harris, Emma Thompson, Christopher Lee, Kirk Douglas, Glenn Close, Meg Ryan, Dennis Quaid, Henry Fonda, Holly Hunter, Lauren Bacall, Fred Astaire, Humphrey Bogart, Orson Welles, Marlene Dietrich, Vivian Leigh, I can't type anymore as there are over 30+ pages on Amazon.
