[Videolib] DVD vendor Q - COOL WORLD
HI all, I am looking for Shirley Clarke's Cool World for purchase. I can get it here: http://shop.vendio.com/HARDTOFINDFILMS/ But not sure if it is legit (I feel certain it is not). I see Zipporah has it on VHS for $400 (that's all) and it is not available in DVD. From Worldcat most of the copies are from Zipporah, and one from 'Nostalgia Collector which I don't think is in business anymore. If I have to I will ILL this, because $400 for VHS seems high, but I don't know the film that well and I could be mistaken. Any light on this would be appreciated. thanks Lorraine lorraine wochna Alden Library, Ohio University Instruction Coordinator Subjects: African American Studies, English, Film Theatre T: 740 597 1238 http://libguides.library.ohiou.edu/profile/lorraine VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. Re: [Videolib] DVD vendor Q - COOL WORLD
This would be an interesting case for the reasonable price section of 108. It appears that Zipporah is the one and only legal distributor and that is their price and they do not have it in DVD. No doubt the folks and some institutions would decide they could just dub an old VHS to DVD or buy it from Hardtofindfilms ( after all it does not say illegal) because $400 is not a reasonable price despite being the ONLY price it was in fact sold at ( well perhaps they once sold it for $300) As it happens I THINK this film is in fact in the process of being restored by a major archive and would be available retail after that. I am not 100% sure, but someone on this list knows the answer and may chime in. THE COOL WORLD is definitely a copyrighted film and it's solely owned by Frederick Wiseman's ZIPPORAH FILMS. It was his first film and he produced while Shirley Clarke directed. You can email the very capable Karen Konicek there and see if she can do something for you. THE COOL WORLD materials are at the Library of Congress (and that's no secret) and a restoration has been discussed. Even then, it's a long way from a DVD release. I believe you. I am just not so sure about other institutions including the folks you work with on the Carnegie project. Imagine a library that has a VHS now and thinks that it is deteriorating or just not convenient. Using 108 they decide $400 for a VHS is just not reasonable. Re: [Videolib] DVD vendor Q - COOL WORLD
Oops I cut that off early. They decide the $400 for a VHS is not reasonable so they just digitize it ( and heck in an increasing number of cases stream it too). This is not in my imagination, it is happening everyday in particular with distributors of small , non fiction films.
