Re: iPad Mini vs full-size

2012-11-09 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
Gary,

Having used the iPad since its original launch, I've used the iPad1, iPad2 and
iPad no number, as well as now the Mini.

I find typing no different, if not easier, I never did, so to speak, touch type
on the iPad screen in landscape. I just held it in one hand and used the other
to type one letter at a time, or, used Flksy.

The Mini is easier as I can type in the same way I type on the iPhone, or, of
course use Fleksy.

Birdclock

2012-11-09 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

having seen the app birdclock on the applevis directory, I thought it
was somehow usable with VoiceOver ,but it's actually not. As soon as
you open the app, you can hear birds and water - nothing else. You
can't change any settings at all, nor is it possible to read anything.
It doesn't tell you the time either. And when I wanted to contact the
developers, I found out that the website was written in a language
that can't even be read by jaws. Clicking on a link called English
didn't change anything at all. Do you have a recommendation what I
could try to make this work? And if not: What's the exact process of
returning an app? If all this isn't possible, I guess I will write an
appropriate review.

Alexandra

Re: iTunes message when hooking up device -- what does this mean and what do I do?

2012-11-09 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Hi,

Joney is correct; it's not a firewall issue at all; it just means that
one of the services that iTunes needs to function properly hasn't
started. Following Joney's steps simply starts the service. It's worth
making sure that the service is set to automatic as opposed to manual.
A more universal way of accessing services is by typing services.msc
in the run dialog.
If this doesn't work / the service doesn't start, from memory Apple
actually let you download this component of iTunes on it's own, so one
of us should be able to link you to it so you can do a reinstall.

Cheers,
Ben.

On 11/9/12, Joney talk2o...@gmail.com wrote:
I get this from time to time. I went to Apple's help section and this is
 what it says to do.

Unplug your I device, turn off iTunes, go into control panel, click on
administrative tools, click on services, arrow down to Apple Mobile Device,
Right click on it and turn the service off. Right click on it again and
turn it back on. Make sure it is set to automatic. Turn iTunes back and I
device back on. It should load then.

I've had to do this a few times. I think it is something going on in the
latest version of iTunes or IOs6.

 Hope this helps.

Re: the big jam box or the Bose sound link mobil speker

2012-11-09 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Steve,

That was a great review. I have the big JamBox and have two questions. First,
how does one answer phone calls with the unit? Also, how does one enable it to
talk upon power up? Thanks.

Les
On Nov 8, 2012, at 3:04 PM, Steve pipeguy...@gmail.com wrote:

 Casey,

I posted on this a couple weeks ago in a different discussion. I have both
speakers. You can look at more in-depth reviews on either one on large sites
 like Amazon.

First, as to sound quality and loudness. The Big Jambox is a bit louder than
the Bose SoundLink. When we're in the hot tub, it is a bit harder to talk
with the Jambox than the Bose, so the Jambox is slightly louder. As for
sound quality, both are great. I'd say the Jambox has more presence. From an
audiophile standpoint, presence is a slightly more marked or prevalent
midrange. The Bose Soundlink, on the other hand, has slightly better bass,
but I don't think the midrange or high-end is quite as crisp. Several Jambox
reviews on Amazon have noted that you can, if you want, duplicate the extra
bass by adjusting your iPod/iPhone equalizer.

There is no, absolutely no, contest when it comes to usability. The Jambox
 wins hands-down.

 The Bose is basically a speaker-only.  It has six buttons across the top;
power, aux, bluetooth, a slight gap then mute, volume down and volume up. The
only time the Bose will beep is when you plug in the charger or hold the
bluetooth button in long enough (about ten seconds) to erase all the
bluetooth memories. It is the size of a hard-back book and the cover opens
to allow the speaker to stand on it. Closing the cover will turn off the
speaker. The Bose has a bit shorter battery life than the Jambox, and there
is no way to get feedback on remaining battery charge unless you can see the
Led display and remember the two-button command. If you only plan to pair it
with one device, then the following will probably not apply. However, if
like us, you intend to pair it with more than one device, you will find that
the pairing process can be a bit frustrating. Rarely, it will be nice and
pair by just selecting the bluetooth option on the Bose. More often than
not, I have to hold the bluetooth button in for three seconds to put it in
discovery mode, go to the iPhone and go into Setting, General Bluetooth and
select the Bose from the list.

The Jambox, on the other hand, almost pairs too easily. At times, I've
turned it on and it will automatically see my phone and pair. All of a
sudden, the phone comes blasting through the speaker. Even though my wife
and I alternate who's phone is going to play music on a particular day, we
rarely have to go into settings on our iPhone to pair, the Jambox
automatically remembers these things and will usually pair without any extra
crap. Rarely, I've had to hit the bluetooth discovery button on the Jambox,
but very rarely. In addition, the Jambox can be set up to talk whenevery you
turn it on. It will tell you the battery level remaining, whether it is in
discovery mode or not, whether you have normal or Live Mode selected, etc.
The Jambox has two pushbutton switches on the side, the upper one is power,
the bottom one is Bluetooth discovery. Across the top are six buttons. The
left circular one is Talk and it will tell you battery level, the next one is
Play/Pause if I recall, the next two are rewind and fast-forward (they work
just like the rewind and fast-forward buttons on your music player,
double-tap to go back or up to the next song; hold in for rewinding or
fast-forwarding in a song), the final two buttons are minus and plus for
volume. If you hold both those in, if I recall correctly, you switch between
Normal and Live mode. The Jambox also has a microphone built in, so if you
get a phone call, you can answer the phone.

Both the Bose site and the Jambox site seem difficult to use if you want to
update the software. I don't think an update is out yet for the Bigger
Jambox. I've written Jambox support about the accessibility issues, and
found them very responsive, but I don't think they have made any changes on
their website. The one update I think I managed to do on the Bose Soundlink
was a real challenge. I had to use the Jaws Convenient OCR as there were
graphics you needed to click that none of the Windows-based screen-readers
would recognize, and this also applied during the software installation
 process on the Soundlink.

Sandra, am going to try to answer some of your queries:

2. My dataplan is paid for my my partner, So is in his name. Well, Siri

Siri's address to me?

A: First, you need to add your personal info in a contact, open phone and
select Contacts along the bottom, then hit the ADD button and do your
best to fill in pertinent info.
Now that you have your very own contact in the Contacts list, go to the home
screen, select Settings, then select General, and finally select Siri.
There is a button toward the bottom entitled My Name (or something akin),
select that and select your own contact for that setting. Siri will politely
address you as Sandra or whatever you place in the First Name field of
your contact entry.

4. I do keep getting the old try again later from Siri, is this just part

I've never gotten that message, but I do have an iPhone 5 so there may very
well be a performance affecting you in this matter. Try a simple request
like, What time is it? The proceed with gradually more complicated
requests, do you have the list of Siri commands? You can also ask Siri,
What can you do?

Re: Birdclock

2012-11-09 Thread Scott Davert
Hi Alexandra.
Not all apps listed on Applevis.com are accessible, and the review
essentially stated what you said. The comments were the following:
Accessibility Comments
the stream sounds did work the first time I opened it; I must have
inadvertently found the off button and touched it... because now I get
no time OR chorus of birds and sound of stream
 VoiceOver Performance
VoiceOver reads no page elements.
Button Labelling
No buttons are clearly labelled.
Usability
The app is totally inaccessible.
I guess the bottom line here is to read reviews, and not assume
because something is listed, that it is accessible. I think you need
to submit a complaint to the iTunes store to get a refund, but I've
never done the process myself.

Take care,
Scott

On 11/9/12, Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan keinohrhasen...@googlemail.com wrote:
 Hello,

having seen the app birdclock on the applevis directory, I thought it
was somehow usable with VoiceOver ,but it's actually not. As soon as
you open the app, you can hear birds and water - nothing else. You
can't change any settings at all, nor is it possible to read anything.
It doesn't tell you the time either. And when I wanted to contact the
developers, I found out that the website was written in a language
that can't even be read by jaws. Clicking on a link called English
didn't change anything at all. Do you have a recommendation what I
could try to make this work? And if not: What's the exact process of
returning an app? If all this isn't possible, I guess I will write an
 appropriate review.

 Alexandra

How to find computer to play on lost city?

Please can someone explain again what I touch for computer in lost cities? No

dimmed. That means on line player. Had two fun games with someone on line

RE: iPad Mini vs full-size

2012-11-09 Thread Rick alfaro
Neal,

Using the latest version of Fleksy which is fully iPad aware, try using it
in landscape mode. I was truly amazed. I was able to type on my Mini with
my hands in the standard home row position just like I was using a laptop.
Once you try it a couple of times, it's yet another boost in typing speed.
It was literally touch typing for those that are touch typists.

Best,

Rick

Gary,

Having used the iPad since its original launch, I've used the iPad1, iPad2
and iPad no number, as well as now the Mini.

I find typing no different, if not easier, I never did, so to speak, touch
type on the iPad screen in landscape. I just held it in one hand and used
the other to type one letter at a time, or, used Flksy.

The Mini is easier as I can type in the same way I type on the iPhone, or,
of course use Fleksy.

Birdclock

2012-11-09 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello Scott,

thanks for your reply. Yes, the next time, I will definitely read the
complete review before buying an app. The beginning only consisted of the
text that you can find on the app store, which made me think this could be
accessible. I wrote to iTunes and asked for a refund but am not sure if this
will work. Anyway, an issue that really bothers me is the fact that you
can't write to the developer unless you speak his / her language. This was
actually the first time I've seen a developer's website written in a
language different from English.

Best regards,

Alexandra

Charging problem with Iphone 4 and latest IOS

2012-11-09 Thread Mária Orovčíková

Hi list,
I have noticed a kind of a bug since I updated to latest IOS.
In previous versions when charging process was done it said something
like 100% charged. I hope I translated it right from my language.
In latest version of IOS when charging process is done it still says
100% charging. When I unplug it for a second and plug it back on the
charger, it says 100% charged.
It is quite anoying because I really don't know when my phone is fully
charged until I unplug and plug it back on the charger.

Does anyone have it happen?
Is it possible to get it fixed?
Thanks for help.

RE: Volume when on a call

2012-11-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Barbara,

Only thing you can do is add Volume to the rotor and then once you are on a
call, turn the rotor to volume, flick Voiceover volume up to 100% and try
and turn down the call volume using the volume down button. You have to make
of course sure that change volume with buttons is turned on in Sounds.

If that doesn't work you are one of the small percentage of people (at least
according to Apple Accessibility it's a small percentage) who are affected
by this. They also told me that it mainly affects iPhone 4S users, but if
you have a 5 and experience this then apparently that is not so. This is
definitely a bug on my 4S and I have tried everything they suggested
including turning off SIRI which they told me could have an effect, but it
made no difference.

I suggest you definitely want to write accessibil...@apple.com and tell hem
that you are having this issue on an iPhone 5. For those who have that
problem I would say it's the most serious iOS 6 issue because it really
makes it very hard and in louder environments impossible to place a call
where you have to enter numbers while following prompts from a system.

You can, of course, get around this by using the headset.

Sieghard

RE: iCloud on a Windows machine

2012-11-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Marcy,

iCloud.com is not very accessible on a PC under any version of
Windows/IE/Firefox and for that matter it is my understanding that it is no
more accessible on a Mac. I do find it somewhat accessible, I use Windows 7
and Internet Explorer 9 and I have, for example, been able to make my iPhone
ring by using the Jaws cursor a lot. But it took me a while and I haven't
tried to duplicate it.

If you want to sync Photos, Internet Explorer Favourites etc. you have to
download the iCloud application and install it, it's a pretty simply program
with only a few options and it's accessible.

Re: Volume when on a call

2012-11-09 Thread Barbara Wilson
I am using a 5 and all of your suggestions sound like a bit of a hassle. It
only really annoys me because I can’t hear when it announces who is calling,
and it is sometimes hard to find exactly where to tap to answer when the screen
is unlocked.

Thanks anyway.

Hi Barbara,

Only thing you can do is add Volume to the rotor and then once you are on a
call, turn the rotor to volume, flick Voiceover volume up to 100% and try and
turn down the call volume using the volume down button. You have to make of
course sure that “change volume with buttons” is turned on in Sounds.

If that doesn’t work you are one of the small percentage of people (at least
according to Apple Accessibility it’s a small percentage) who are affected by
this. They also told me that it mainly affects iPhone 4S users, but if you have
a 5 and experience this then apparently that is not so. This is definitely a
bug on my 4S and I have tried everything they suggested including turning off
SIRI which they told me could have an effect, but it made no difference.

I suggest you definitely want to write accessibil...@apple.com and tell hem
that you are having this issue on an iPhone 5. For those who have that problem
I would say it’s the most serious iOS 6 issue because it really makes it very
hard and in louder environments impossible to place a call where you have to
enter numbers while following prompts from a system.

You can, of course, get around this by using the headset.

Sieghard

Apologies if this has already been dealt with before.

Since getting my iPhone 5, I have noticed that the volume of VO when I am on a
call is very low, as are the key tones when I am entering numbers if dialling
an automated service. Is there a way to increase these volumes?

Thanks.

RE: Copying my iTunes library from one PC to another

2012-11-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Shane,

You can copy it any way you like, put it on a USB stick an external hard
drive or if you have both computers hooked up together into the same router
you should be able to access the hard drive of the old computer from the new
computer or vice versa.

I suggest after you install iTunes on the new computer to just copy the
entire iTunes Media folder, it is a subfolder in the main iTunes folder
which usually is a subfolder of the Music folder.

After you copied it, open iTunes on the new computer, select File and Add
Folder to Library then browse to the iTunes Media folder and select it.
This will populate all your libraries (music, apps, books, tones etc.) with
whatever content you have.

Good luck,
Sieghard

can't write to the developer unless you speak his / her language. This was
actually the first time I've seen a developer's website written in a

RE: Charging problem with Iphone 4 and latest IOS

2012-11-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Mária,

I have an iPhone 4S and my phone will say Charging device battery, 100%
which usually means it's more or less fully charged, but I also have seen it
say 100% on AC power which to me indicates that now it is definitely fully
charged but since it's still plugged in it will state it's on AC power.

I do agree that sometimes it does not seem to switch to the 100% on AC
power message and instead continue to say 100%, charging. I don't
consider this to be a really big issue, if it says 100% that's good enough
for me even if it maybe hasn't quite finished that last little bit. I
typically plug my phone in over night so it should definitely be fully
charged in the morning.

my facebook calendar on my iPhone

I am trying to get my calendars straight. I have the facebook ap, plus I have
my calendar. When ever I have siri if I have an appointment on a particular

thing I am interested in at the time is my calendar with my appointments. Any

RE: iCloud on a Windows machine

2012-11-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Scott,
I wouldn't quite go that far, as I stated in my previous message, you can
learn to do quite a bit on iCloud.com with the Jaws cursor and knowing how
to fully utilize Jaws on websites, but it does take a bit of practice and it
helps to have some sighted help explaining the first time around what's
going on.

For example, when I first go to iCloud.com and go to the Sign In button
nothing happens if I press enter or space bar. However, if I route the Jaws
cursor to the PC cursor and then do a single left click I get the edit
fields for my Apple Id and password. Enter your Apple Id, then your password
and press enter and it will sign you in.

I just signed in and, for example, went to Reminders. I was able to once
again use the Jaws cursor to click on it and I can see my Reminders. I could
click on a Reminder, then was able to click the Details button with the Jaws
cursor and it then gave me the options to Delete or click Done since that
particular reminder happened yesterday, but I hadn't marked it as Done. I
clicked Delete with the Jaws cursor and the reminder was gone from my iPhone
as well as iCloud.

Now, after that I was not able to get out of the Reminders area on iCloud so
I had to close it and log back in. Then I went to Find my iPhone and I was
once again able to use the Jaws cursor, click on Devices, I then got a My
Devices and after clicking on that I saw Sieghard's iPhone and it told me
it had been located 4 minutes ago which is probably when I signed in to
iCloud. Once I got to that I had buttons I could click for Play Sound,
Erase iPhone which obviously I did not try and a few others I can't
recall. I clicked the Play Sound button and my iPhone which was next to me
started dinging away.

I don't use Mail or Contacts, but it definitely is possible to use iCloud to
some extend. Of course I also wish Apple would make the iCloud.com website
fully accessible, but I definitely get less from a silent movie without
audio description.

Sieghard

Hi Sandrar,

Siri is completely Internet-based. It sends your requests to an Apple server,

RE: Volume when on a call

Hi Barbara,

I think I misunderstood then. I thought you were referring to entering
numbers during a call using the speakerphone like when you call your bank
for example and have to enter your account number etc.

If you just can't hear Voiceover announce who is calling you should be able
to adjust that with the Voiceover volume rotor and once it is set you won't
have to do it again.

As far as finding the Answer button that also is easy. Just put your finger
on the Home Key, then slide it up and a bit to the right (about 1 or 2
o'clock from the Home Key, and you will be on the answer button.
Alternatively you can use a 2-finger double tap.

How to get rid of a blank home screen that's not at the end

2012-11-09 Thread Jeff Samco

Hello, list,

I recently upgraded my iPhone 4 from iOS 5 to 6.0.1. I have about 9
full screens of apps. When the new Passbook appp was added it became
the only app on page 2. Thankfully all other screens had their app
order and folders preserved. But, even after moving Passbook off of
screen 2 it remains blank. I suspect I will have to manually move
everything up one page but I'm hoping someone has a magic bullet to
simply correct this.

Thanks,
Jeff

Re: How to get rid of a blank home screen that's not at the end

2012-11-09 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Jeff,

When I move everything off of a screen, it disappears, so that's what is
supposed to happen. Try rebooting the phone. You could also try going into app
edit mode by double-tapping and holding an app, and then press Home to leave
taht mode. Maybe that would do it. If that doesn't help, maybe a reset, where
you hold the Home and Power buttons down for about 8 seconds. Or connecting the
iPHone to the computer and syncing.

I hope one of these ideas helps.

Best,
Anna

Hi Steve,

That was a great review. I have the big JamBox and have two
questions.
First, how does one answer phone calls with the unit? Also,
how does one
enable it to talk upon power up? Thanks.

 Casey,

I posted on this a couple weeks ago in a different
 discussion. I have
both speakers. You can look at more in-depth reviews on
 either one on
 large sites like Amazon.

First, as to sound quality and loudness. The Big Jambox
 is a bit louder
than the Bose SoundLink. When we're in the hot tub, it is
 a bit harder to
talk with the Jambox than the Bose, so the Jambox is
 slightly louder. As
for sound quality, both are great. I'd say the Jambox has
 more presence.
From an audiophile standpoint, presence is a slightly more
 marked or
prevalent midrange. The Bose Soundlink, on the other
 hand, has slightly
better bass, but I don't think the midrange or high-end is
 quite as crisp.
Several Jambox reviews on Amazon have noted that you can,
 if you want,
duplicate the extra bass by adjusting your iPod/iPhone
 equalizer.

There is no, absolutely no, contest when it comes to
 usability. The
 Jambox wins hands-down.

The Bose is basically a speaker-only. It has six buttons
 across the top;
power, aux, bluetooth, a slight gap then mute, volume down
 and volume up.
The only time the Bose will beep is when you plug in the
 charger or hold
the bluetooth button in long enough (about ten seconds) to
 erase all the
bluetooth memories. It is the size of a hard-back book
 and the cover
opens to allow the speaker to stand on it. Closing the
 cover will turn
off the speaker. The Bose has a bit shorter battery life
 than the Jambox,
and there is no way to get feedback on remaining battery
 charge unless you
can see the Led display and remember the two-button
 command. If you only
plan to pair it with one device, then the following will
 probably not
apply. However, if like us, you intend to pair it with
 more than one
device, you will find that the pairing process can be a
 bit frustrating.
Rarely, it will be nice and pair by just selecting the
 bluetooth option on
the Bose. More often than not, I have to hold the
 bluetooth button in for
three seconds to put it in discovery mode, go to the
 iPhone and go into
Setting, General Bluetooth and select the Bose from the
 list.

The Jambox, on the other hand, almost pairs too easily.
 At times, I've
turned it on and it will automatically see my phone and
 pair. All of a
sudden, the phone comes blasting through the speaker.
 Even though my wife
and I alternate who's phone is going to play music on a
 particular day, we
rarely have to go into settings on our iPhone to pair, the
 Jambox
automatically remembers these things and will usually pair
 without any
extra crap. Rarely, I've had to hit the bluetooth
 discovery button on the
Jambox, but very rarely. In addition, the Jambox can be
 set up to talk
whenevery you turn it on. It will tell you the battery
 level remaining,
whether it is in discovery mode or not, whether you have
 normal or Live
Mode selected, etc. The Jambox has two pushbutton
 switches on the side,
the upper one is power, the bottom one is Bluetooth
 discovery. Across

RE: Volume when on a call

2012-11-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Barbara,

The iPhone keeps track of different volume settings which is why Voiceover
normally could be fine but low when it announces the caller Id. SIRI, for
example, also remembers its own volume setting and you have to adjust these
once after which it should remember. You can only adjust something like SIRI
volume or Voiceover announcing something like caller Id by adjusting it
while the event is speaking, e.g. if you want to lower SIRI volume you would
have to ask SIRI something and then when SIRI is speaking you have to lower
the volume using the volume down key.

For caller Id I don't think you can use the volume keys because that would
most likely raise or lower the ring volume.

Keep in mind that pressing the volume button when the phone rings actually
stops it from ringing again and then you could touch the screen or flick to
the call display and possibly raise the volume with the button as it is
announcing the caller. You just have to try it, if you have a landline you
could call yourself and test whether this works.

Sieghard

Can't connect to outside world on WiFi

2012-11-09 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi all,

I have a very strange problem. I can't get my apps to connect. Facebook,
Twitter, Track This the App store won't connect when using WiFi. I know my
WiFi is working because my laptop connects to it and works just fine. Since
it does, my Internet provider won't help because the connection is there and
working. They say they don't support devices.

Strange thing is that, when I connect to another WiFi away from home, things
work well. When I turn off my WiFi, the phone works just fine on 3G.

By the way, I am using an IPhone 4

Any ideas?

Re: ICloud -- What's the best way to leverage the free storage space for the most value in backing up iDevices?

2012-11-09 Thread Grant Hardy
If you turn on iCloud Backup, that will back up your app data, text
messages, call history and so forth to iCloud, giving you a great
safety net. Under settings/iCloud/Storage and Backup/Manage Storage,
you can select the backup section pertaining to your device, and then
turn off specific apps from having their data backed up if you find
that backups are too large.

Also under this same manage storage section, you can see which apps
are syncing to iCloud. Separate from backup, this allows an app to
synchronize data with iCloud which offers a number of advantages. For
example, Downcast can sync with iCloud meaning your podcast
subscriptions can be available on any iOS device that you own.

Some data is synced to iCloud which you just can't see at all, an
example being the Fleksy dictionary, and certain settings such as
which cities you've added to the weather app. I'm a bit unclear on why
these can't be seen by the user, but it's not a big deal.

For just storing regular files in iCloud, there's no direct way to do
it but you can download a file manager app such as Filer and transfer
files into the app by any means that you wish. As long as iCloud
Backup is turned on, those files will be backed up as part of the data
for the file manager app.

Also, go nuts with the photo stream, as it doesn't count towards your
iCloud storage quota!

 Hi,

I'm trying to figure out how to best use the limited free storage available
on iCloud to back up and synck devices.

Music, books, podcasts are stored on iTunes on my PC. How should I set up my

I'll appreciate any insights into this.

 Best, Keith

Help with my rotor please

2012-11-09 Thread Shane Clark
Hello all,
I can't seem to find the vertical navigation, or action in my rotor. I find
actions when I'm in my email app, but When I'm my rotor itself, I can't seem
to find actions anymore. Any ideas on where these two things could be?
Thanks.
