RE: All new Skype update with major changes to the user interface
Hi TRon, Once you started a call the Speakerphone button is there towards the top of the screen. If I put my finger on the edge of the phone on or just below the volume down button and then touch the screen in the middle at about that level I am right on it. You can also touch just up from the home key and find the End Call button and then swipe left I think twice. First one is for the DialPad and then I think it's Speakerphone. Voicreover will say Speakerphone is Off button and if you double tap it and check again it will say Speakerphone is On button. For one thing, the app loads super fast and this is something that is mentioned in the What's new. The first time I opened it after the update a video started playing. I let it play and after maybe 15 or 20 seconds it stopped and I had a Skip Video button. Under More I have buttons for Help, About, Send Feedback and Sign Out. Underneath the top where I find these 2 buttons I have now 3 items in one row: Recents, Favorites and People The order of these 3 items changes, Voiceover doesn't say they are buttons or links, but you can double tap on them and whichever one you double tap on moves to the very left. Favorites is new and for me it's empty since I haven't added any Favorites yet. People gives me all my contacts. If you double tap it you have a search field to look for somebody and there is also a table index on the right. Between the search field and the top of your list starting with A is a button which Voiceover announces as All. This means all your contacts are displayed and if you double tap on this button you can choose between All and Online. In the past only the main DialPad where you would dial your phone number would work in touch typing mode and you still had to double or split tap the DialPad for entering numbers during a call. I think this makes Skype the only Voip app where touch typing on the DialPad is fully supported. OK, that's about it for now. Deleting Recent Chat/Call history in Skype
Hello List, I did a bit of checking on various Skype forums and there is currently indeed no way to clear/delete chat history, recent calls and so on. In one thread somebody from Skype replied to many rather unhappy messages that they are looking to bring this back in a future update. One thing that works nicely is to swipe between People, Recents and Favorites instead of finding the buttons at the top. You can double tap and hold either on the left side of the phone and swipe across to the right after the triple tone or double tap and hold on the right and swipe across to the left. This will smoothly and seamlessly move between screens, just touch the screen after to see if you are in People, Recents or Favorites. For those who didn't see my previous post as to how you can remove contacts, here it is again: 1. Double tap on the contact you want to remove 2. Double tap on the More button at the bottom right 3. Double tap on the Block button from the menu which pops up (the other option is Add to Favorites 4. In the next menu you have the options Block, Block and Remove and No (the latter is if you change your mind and want to do nothing). Re: Moving By Line
As others have pointed out, it is flicking up and down that moves from line to line. But you have to be sure you are going up and down absolutely straight, even a slight angle from straight up and down will throw it off and cause it to lose focus. This seems even more sensitive in IOS 7, than it was in 6. For example, I might be flicking down on a webpage and pass a line that I want to review but when I flick back up it is no longer there and I have to try to find it again. It is as though VO is losing its place. I have noticed this on the internet and in my bible app. This happens on my iPhone 4s and my iPad 3, both running latest version of IOS7. Re: NFB June Braille Monitor/Article on the iPhone
And how do we adapt to stereo remotes with touchscreens? - Original Message - From: David Chittenden dchitten...@gmail.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, June 05, 2014 4:38 AM Subject: Re: NFB June Braille Monitor/Article on the iPhone I enjoyed reading your response. Regarding the touchscreen, hand/ear coordination (haptic / auditory) coordination is often difficult for blind people to master. This appears to be because blind people are taught haptic / haptic response coordination. In other words blind people are taught to touch and feel for a tactile response. Sighted people, on the other hand, utilise haptic / visual response. Considering that touchscreen technology is now more expensive than non-touch screen with physical buttons, this interface is, and will continue, replacing the older, haptic rich environment. In fact, for the sighted, in every category / venue studied thus far, directly interactive touchscreen technology kiosks and devices reduce errors from 15%-20% to 3%-5%. So, it becomes incumbent upon us blind people to adapt if we wish to continue fully participate in modern society. As to battery life of the iPhone, if the person were to use the iPhone the way they used to use the Nokia Phone, Windows CE Phone, and/or simple and inexpensive dumb phone with limited accessibility, they would find themselves getting similar levels of battery life. When I switched to my iPhone, I noticed a marked decrease in battery life from 3 or 4 days to just over a day. I wondered about it, so switched back to the previous phone for a week. I took note of what I did and how much time I spent on each system. I then used the iPhone in the same way as the older phone, and got 4 days of battery life. Personally, I prefer using my iPhone as my portable computer. It provides me with unparalleled access across technology sectors. As for using the phone keypad, when one trains one's muscle memory to the locations of the numbers on the keypad, dialling can and does become significantly quicker. That said, practice is essential. As for the battery life of certain blindness specific products, I prefer the much increased access and higher technology of the accessible general market hitech solutions. I can do much more for a greatly reduced price. As to the frustration of learning yet another interface, in the case of the iPhone, or Android Phones for that matter, it does take longer because, not only is a person learning the interface, each blind individual is having to learn an entirely new way of interacting that he/she was never trained for when initially learning blindness skills. Therefore, the teachers of blindness skills should start teaching haptic/auditory response in order to enable better / more efficient adaptation for the blind into the modern technological world. If you don't want to pay for a data plan, the iPhone has no option for that. A data plan will cost you about twenty dollars a month. You need a data plan for the iPhone to be able to communicate over the Internet. Response: you need to pay for a monthly plan to get anything on the Internet. If a consumer already has an Internet connection in his home, he can buy an iPod Touch or an iPad. These devices run iOS and don't require an additional monthly data plan. The fact is that any computer or device that accesses the Internet is usually going to require you to pay for some sort of access plan. 2. It is very inefficient to make a simple phone call with the iPhone, particularly if you don't have a person in your contacts list. You can dial a phone number that you know much more quickly with a keypad that has real, physical buttons. Response: not at all. You can simply press the home button and command

voiceover trying to read my Kindle book like a foreign language
I was happily reading along in a Kindle book with scrolling last night when suddenly the voice switched and started trying to read my Kindle book like it was a foreign language instead of English. It isn't a voice that sounds like anything on my rotor and I think it sounds kind of oriental. I tried closing Kindle and opening it again and I've tried turning the phone off and on; don't want to reset with home/power unless I have to. The only thing that fixes this is to change to a different voice in the language rotor. I use Austrailian English as my default and if I switch to U.S. English or British English, which are in my rotor, the foreign voice goes away and I can read. Even if I change to the Spanish voice in my rotor I hear the Spanish voice reading English like it's Spanish. The only voice in which the behavior occurs is when I am in my default language according to my voiceover setup. If I just touch the screen with my default voice selected, the English is read appropriately, but as soon as I do the two-finger swipe down to read continuously, the other voice that isn't in my rotor starts up again. I am turning my rotor away from Language even though that voice is not in my rotor so this doesn't have anything to do with being in the language rotor. If I swipe down in my home screen this doesn't happen, just in uindle, though I haven't tried other apps. I can go on reading with Daniel or Samantha but I want to read with Karen and this is really griping me. The only other thing I can do is just turn off speech and read with my braille display. Any suggestions as to how I get Kindle to read with my default language voice instead of pretending it's a different language and bringing in some other voice? Thanks. -- Cheryl I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf. I got crumpled wads of tear-stained paper thrown in the trash! Then God gave me a new heart and life: His joy for my despairing tears! This sounds like it could be a bug with Karen or with the book, but I don't know why only that voice would bring it out. I'd send the name of the book and where it happens in the book to both Apple accessibility and Amazon customer service with your explanation of the issue. It seems to me you've done everything I would have done, except the reboot, which I'd be surprised if that would make any difference. There may have been something on page written in another language. One letter in a non-European language is enough to activate the relevant voice until it's reached. Then it switches back. Re: NFB June Braille Monitor/Article on the iPhone
I certainly wouldn't have a problem using a touch screen on anything, as long as it had speech or some other feedback. For most remotes, that would beat pushing buttons and hoping they do what the manual seems to indicate in its PDF version. RE: A question about the life proof cases
Hi Casey, I have an iPhone 5, not 5S, and I got the life-proof case because I wanted a water-proof case for rowing. It does muffle the voice a bit. You should have the phone face down for best sound. I have talked to many while it was in the case, and even my friend with quite a hearing deficit had no problem understanding me. I bought the belt clip and armband with it, so it added up to quite an investment. I only put it in that case if I'm going out on the water. For every day, I use a minimal clear TPU case. Please, understand that this is not meant as a bash about the NFB vs any other organization or even a criticism of the Monitor. However, the piece infuriated me because the NFB is a highly influential organization and many of its members and readers of the Monitor will take the article seriously just because it comes from a nationally recognized blindness organization. Yes, you can leave the probes in the meat. They're linked via bluetooth to your phone so you can watch the temperature or just wait for the preset alarm to sound. If you leave the probes in and you need to turn the meat, you will need good oven-proof gloves to extract the probes as they get extremely hot, obviously. Skype and iPhone Contacts
Hello All, With regard to the question of how to add iPhone Contacts into the new Skype app, I just went into my phone settings, to the privacy area. I opened up the Contacts section and, by default, Skypes access to my Contacts was turned off. For those who want Skype to have access to the iPHone's Contacts, which I do not, have any of you checked to make sure this is turned on? If so, what happened? I am leaving mine set to off. Re: voiceover trying to read my Kindle book like a foreign language
Actually, no, it is not a bug in either Kindle, the book, or VO. When the language is set to default language, any other language mark is read in that language by that language voice. Since it sounded like an Asian voice, there was most likely some sort of character mark in that particular language which the English voice could not pronounce. Therefore, when reading the page using another English voice, the funny symbol mark is not even attempted by VO. If one flicks through all of the language choices in the rotor, one will find one's default language listed a second time without the words, default language, announced at the same time. With the language rotor set on this occurrance of one's language, VO will not change to other languages, and will read in the desired voice. Hi, I don't use pandora but after reading the responce from pandora to the blind user about their app, I think the responce from pandora to the blind users was very uncalled for and very rude and I think I would never recommend pandora to anyone because of their nasty comments about blind people an just being very nasty in my opinion . This sort of thing should be reported and the person who develops the pandora app should have their app removed from the apple store all together. This Facebook message isn't true. The ONLY facebook page that I could find, Pandora user's can't post messages to the page. There however many Pandora pages created by individuals, who have people discussing the Pandora app. Pandora Radio is actually Pandora Media. pandora is a large millions dollar company, not your run of the mill app developer. Just passing the info on, whether you believe it or not is up to each individual. Re: Pandora Response to accessibility
This is not first-hand or even second-hand information, so I take it with a large ocean of salt. I don't know which is more incredible: the message itself or the willingness to take it as fact. I don't believe it's a good idea to base responses on hearsay alone. Do thy research. I kind of wish there was an equivalent of Snopes to dispel some of these rumors that pop up with regards to accessibility. Given my frame of mind at the moment, I almost want to start such a page. It's challenging enough to deal with accessibility issues without wading through nasty and silly nonsense. Folks, let's work on the stuff we do know about and have some direct communication between users and developers to fix it. I know some blind people, some who are older but even a few who are not that old but who are absolutely incapable of reaching any level of proficiency with technology and for them the iPhone would be an absolute nightmare. I found it interesting how a lot of responses sounded as if the poster felt personally insulted by the fact that somebody dared to say the iPhone had shortcomings or was not suitable for a certain group of people. So easy, was: Skype and iPhone Contacts
Hi Jonathan, Donna and others, Well, it occurred to me to maybe check on the DialPad screen since one would typically use the iPhone Contact list to call landlines or mobile numbers and the integration is right there. Double tap on DialPad and, there is a Cancel button at the top left, the phone number field in the middle and at the top right is the Addressbook button. I had turned off Skype in Privacy/Contacts yesterday in order to see if turning it off and on would make a difference so now it told me that I had to go and turn this on, after I did all my iPhone Contacts were there. I guess to me it would make sense to also have iPhone Contacts in that list of what one wants to display under People, but for now this definitely is an easy way to get access to the iPhone Contacts. Re: Skype and iPhone Contacts
Hi all, If I'm understanding correctly, some can't access their Contacts within the new Skype5 app? I am perfectly able to access all my contacts by simply adding them to Skype via toggle within Settings Privacy Contacts. I then turned off this Contacts feature within Skype5, and Skype once again informed me that I needed to turn on related setting within Privacy settings. In other words, one can add Contacts then use in-app search utility to search for a specific iOS Contact within Skype5 and the phone number will be automatically placed on dial pad screen. If one chooses, one can then go into Settings Privacy and disable Skype's ability to see one's Contacts--nothing appears to be imported into Skype because I can then disable Skype's ability to see my iOS Contacts. Re: Deleting Recent Chat/Call history in Skype
If all is working as it should within Skype5, I think it is more of an issue of people not looking close enough through all app screens and settings. I just posted a solution that literally took me about 5 minutes to experiment and figure out without having read all messages on this topic. Please look for my previous post for details. Even on my PC I can opt to show all my Outlook contacts in Skype and I really hope that a lot of other people will realize that it is no longer possible to access one's iPhone contact list and raise a storm. I didn't want to add to the list clutter, but at times there is a serious lack of basic critical thinking on these lists. RE: Skype and iPhone Contacts
Hi Joseph, You posted responses to both the Contact and the Recent Chat thread. I assume the solution you speak about which took you 5 minutes to figure out relates o Contacts and not to deleting items from the Recents list, a feature which really is missing. Could you explain what you mean by in-app search utility? Do you refer to using the Addressbook button at the top right of the DialPad? I think we were all a bit confused by the fact that when you tap on the All button in the People view there are only 2 options, All and Online. In the previous Skype version one would use the Lists button and then there were options for All, Skype Contacts, Online Contacts, Saved Phone Numbers and also iPhone Contacts. I think this was maybe a bit more intuitive and I don't quite understand why they didn't at least put iPhone Contacts as a third option with All and Online. Then it would have been possible to access the contact list either from inside the People view as well as from the DialPad. Also, if I use the search field in the People view and search for a contact I only get results from my Skype contacts and not from my iPhone Contacts even though I have allowed Skype access to my contact list.
