The book Apple Watch Without Watching has been cancelled for now, refunds being issued

2015-04-13 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hello everyone. Thanks to all our wonderful customers who ordered Apple Watch
Without Watching.
The key point in this message is to let you know that I am now not able to
complete this book in a timely manner, and that if you've pre-ordered it,
you'll be refunded in full and will receive an email from PayPal as soon as
that's happened. I should get through all the refunds in the next few hours, as
you deserve your money back as quickly as I can manage. If you'd like a fuller
explanation, read on
When Apple Watch was announced, I received dozens of requests via our contact
form asking me to write a book about it, so I made plans to do that. It
required a bit of extra preparation on my part, because New Zealand, where I
live, is not one of the countries where Apple Watch is being sold at present.
We're used to some companies not shipping products here, and because of that,
there are New Zealand-based services that give you a US shipping address, and
for an additional fee, forward the package on to new Zealand. I've used one
such service before to receive products from the US Apple Store, without an
issue.
I waited until I had placed the order and received a confirmation email before
letting people know that Apple Watch Without Watching was available for
pre-order.
However, I have now received an email from Apple cancelling my order on the
grounds that they do not ship to freight forwarding services. This may be a new
policy, or I suspect it's simply that they're subjecting Apple Watch orders to
a higher degree of scrutiny to ensure people aren't buying up product to sell
at a profit. I understand that, this product is in huge demand right now, and
it's frustrating when genuine buyers miss out only to find them on eBay for
ridiculously inflated prices.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing. We could of course have had the Apple Watch
shipped to Bonnie's family in the US, or to friends in the US, UK or Australia.
Instead, we used a method that had worked before, but clearly hasn't worked
this time.
I've now lost my place in the order queue, and that means I would be unlikely
to receive an Apple Watch before the end of June. While I can do plenty of
research on the watch's use, I wouldn't want to sell you a book written without
a lot of hands-on experience with the product. I wouldn't be able to deliver a
book of a quality I'd be happy with until mid to late July at the earliest.
This is far beyond when I said I would have the book published.
It's possible that Apple Watch will be available in New Zealand before that,
with a different pool of stock, but I don't know that, and it's not acceptable
to me to leave customers hanging. I'd far rather refund the money and hope
you'll come back again, than string you along until I can deliver the book,
giving you a negative impression of Mosen Consulting.
What's also of comfort to me is that you could use the money I am refunding to
buy another Apple Watch book that will, I have no doubt, be superb. Quite some
way down the track of planning this project, I learned that Anna Dresner, who
is an excellent technology writer, is writing a diary-style book on her use of
Apple Watch as a blind person. Like all her books, it will be great, and I'm
sure information on how to get that book will be available in due course.
Thanks again for all the support for this project. I may come back to it, but
not until I'm certain about when I can deliver it.
To those of you who are still on the list to receive an Apple Watch, I look
forward very much to hearing how you get on with it.
All the best.

Re: latest iTunes

2015-04-13 Thread Christopher Chaltain

It would help knowing what operating system and screen reader you're using.

Using NVDA on my Windows 7 system, I tap the space bar on the albums
button. In the dialog that pops up, I can tab over to a list and then I
can arrow up and down to select songs, albums, artists and so on. Once
an option is selected you can continue tabbing to set the sort options.
Just back tab to the list and hit enter on the view you want to close
the dialog and bring up the desired view.

iOS 8.3 Constantly Refreshing

2015-04-13 Thread Mike M
Howdy folks,
Ever since updating to 8.3 my phone every 10 minutes or so makes the
refresh sound and the little bonk noise like there’s nothing to refresh.
This happens when i’m using it, while it’s locked and i’m not using it,
and when I’m listening to anything. It doesn’t matter what app i’m using and
killing everything in the app switcher doesn’t make a difference. I haven’t
seen this mentioned anywhere else and I’m wondering if anyone else has.
Thanks for any input.

Hi Jonathan,
It is possible someone on this list ordered an Apple Watch with an April
delivery and would be willing to send you their watch so you could write the
book. In compensation they would get a free book and their name credit in it.

Resetting To Factory Settings Question

2015-04-13 Thread Arnold Schmidt
The two times I restored it to factory settings, in preparation for restoring
it, I had it connected to iTunes, and told iTunes I wanted to restore it, as
opposed to setting it up as a new phone. When I get ready to sell my iPhone 5,
I will reset it to factory settings to erase all my data. My question: When I
do this, assuming it is not connected to iTunes, will it reset itself to
factory specifications, then turn itself off when it is finished, so that its
new owner can turn it on and set it up, or will I need to know when it is
finished erasing everything and turn it off myself? If the former, I will
erase it without connecting it to iTunes. If the latter, I will connect it to
iTunes so I will know when it is ready to be set up. If I have to connect it
to iTunes, can I just turn it off when it gets to this set up screen? I have
already restored all its data to my new phone, so I do not need to back it up
again, just erase it.

Thanks for any information.

chosent he Fleksy system keyboard using the Globe key we can rota to typing

worth it if I can have best of both worlds.

Apple Watch info

2015-04-13 Thread Larry Smith
I thought some of you may find this blog interesting. It was written by David
Woodbridge. Very nicely written.

iSee - David Woodbridge Technology Blog

Pre-Release notes of my experience with the Apple watch April 8th 2015
Pre-release notes of the Apple watch looking at accessibility

When I spent a few hours with the Apple watch on April 8th 2015, I jotted down
notes about the Apple watch’s physical description, general overall points, low
vision and speech features, hearing, Siri, and Apple watch functions I am most
looking forward to using.
At the end of this document, I have included a summary from Apple in regards to
the Apple watch accessibility features

Some initial points

In a recent podcast of mine looking at the click wheel on the iPod nano 4/5th
generations, and the touch screen access on the iPod nano 6/7th generations,
VoiceOver access on the Apple watch has far exceeded my expectations.

It is important to note that the Apple watch is a companion to the iPhone and
is designed to work in conjunction with the phone.

This is the first truly accessible main stream smart watch for people who
require various types of accessibility options such as large print, speech
output, mono audio etc.

When the Apple watch is available for pre-order on April 10 2015 (online or via
the Apple Store app), you will be able to make an appointment at an Apple store
to look at the different Apple watch’s and associated bands to sort out which
combination is wright for you. In addition, you will be able to discuss
various features of the Apple watch. Once the watch's are shipped on the 24th
of April, you can either get online or in store assistance to personalise and
setup your Apple watch.

Now on to my notes:

Physical description of the Apple watch:

1. The Apple watch is Rectangular in shape with rounded edges.
2. With the Apple watch on your left wrist, holding your arm in front of you:
Right edge: round Digital crown at top, and oval side (friends) button at
bottom.
left edge: across from the digital crown: speaker, and across from the
“Friends” button: microphone.
Top face: touch screen with the screen ending at the curved sides.
Back face: raised convex housing in the middle which contains the magnetic
charger plus the sensors. Two pin holes on either side near where the bands
connect to allow the bands to be detached by pressing in on them. I.e. the
bands fill like they have slotted in to the Apple watch rather than being
attached on either side by band pins.

General points:

1. During my brief play with the Apple watch, I did not have the opportunity to
set the watch up itself: either using the Apple watch and the Apple watch app
on the iPhone. In addition, I was more looking at the low vision and VoiceOver
experience when navigating the interface, rather than using the apps which are
accessible.
2. The Apple watch feels very very nice in the hand, like a smooth square peace
of glass.
3. The Digital crown was extremely easy to turn/press, and the friends button
just as easy to press. The digital crown does not click when turned, but has a
very smooth action. The digital crown itself is bevelled. In actual fact,
rather than turning the digital crown around with two fingers, I just found
myself using one finger on top of the digital crown to move it.
4. Easy to connect the magnetic charger to the Apple watch. The side of the
charger that connects to the Apple watch has an indented edge and the magnet
moves the connection to the correct place. Not a hard connection click, quite
gentle.
5. I only had an opportunity to look at the leather loop band and the rubber
band. The leather loop band felt quite nice, but had some difficulty in doing
it up due to the fact that I had to put it on my wrist and then do it up. The
rubber band wasn’t a problem putting on as with the leather loop as it was more
a point of sliding the band through to get to a point where you could put the
pin through, and then tuck it in to the slot on the band to hide the end.
6. The touch screen of the watch is the full face of the watch and stops as you
come to the curve around the edges: very easy to identify, and certainly had no
problems using gestures on the face of the watch. i.e. didn’t go off the edges
when using gestures.
7. Much preferred the wait of the Apple watch over the Apple Sports. The
sports is quite a bit lighter. I just prefer a bit of weight on my wrist.
8. As far as using the glass surface on either the Sports or the Apple watch,
it didn’t really make any difference in performing gestures.
9. For me, the 42 millimetres Apple watch was a good size, and did not feel to
big on my wrist. You can tell the size difference between the 38 and the 42.
It may be better for low vision folks to perhaps use the 42..
10. If you take the Apple watch off your wrist and put it back on

Then, is it okay for me to turn it off after it has reset, and when the new

Re: Finding videos online, and converting them into MP3s

2015-04-13 Thread Jeff Samco

Hello, Terri,
Actually there are a number of web services that will take the URL of
a YouTube video, convert it to MP3, and allow you to download the MP3
file to your computer. One is:

Hello once again.

I am sure this question has been asked before.
However, I receive a lot of mail, and I am not always able to read
all the messages that come to this list. So I apologize for asking a
question that might have already been asked here.

I was wondering, is there an accessible program that I can use, to
convert video files, into MP3 files? I want to have music on my
phone, but I don't want to have to use iTunes to put music onto my
phone, if I don't have to. I don't particularly like that program. I
don't feel it's very accessible.

I want to be able to get as much music as I can. Especially country,
and pack. I love new country, and classic country, even Bluegrass.
So I want to be able to find as much music as I can. I don't think I
can convert YouTube videos, from what I understand.

I am looking for a free program, that is accessible.
If anyone can help me out, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you very much!

If someone has Kurzweil 1000, he can open a BRF file and it will
automatically back translate the document. It can then be saved as a

What do you mean when you say it isn't showing itself on your 5s? Do you

Re: what am I doing wrong with the latest fleksy update?

2015-04-13 Thread Sandratomkins
hello Harry,

thanks for this advice! I believe I have done all of these things, but the
keyboard is still not behaving as flexes should. four example, if I create a
pattern for a word I just get rubbish. if I swipe left or right I just moved to
the previous or the next letter. I have tried choosing fLeksy from the switch
keyboard button but it makes no difference. I have redownloaded the app in case
it was a bad download.

any more suggestions would be very welcome here!

Turning up Siri volume

2015-04-13 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone.

I had to get a new phone this weekend. There's a long story, which I won't bore
you with.
Anyway, the Siri voice, and the dictation noise, are very low sounding.
Is there way to turn this up at all? This would really help me out. I can
barely hear it, when I am trying to give someone directions. It's rather
annoying.

Any help with this would be very much appreciated.

Thank you so much!

Terri

Finding videos online, and converting them into MP3s

2015-04-13 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello once again.

I am sure this question has been asked before.
However, I receive a lot of mail, and I am not always able to read all the
messages that come to this list. So I apologize for asking a question that
might have already been asked here.

I was wondering, is there an accessible program that I can use, to convert
video files, into MP3 files? I want to have music on my phone, but I don't want
to have to use iTunes to put music onto my phone, if I don't have to. I don't
particularly like that program. I don't feel it's very accessible.

I want to be able to get as much music as I can. Especially country, and pack.
I love new country, and classic country, even Bluegrass. So I want to be able
to find as much music as I can. I don't think I can convert YouTube videos,
from what I understand.
I am looking for a free program, that is accessible.
If anyone can help me out, I would really appreciate it.
New

Thank you very much!

involved but worth it if I can have best of both worlds.

RE: What Apple Watch apps would you like me to develop?

2015-04-13 Thread Rick Alfaro
I would imagine that such an app could offer both talking announcements and or
silent vibration alerts, all configurable. This would be a great app. Due to
any Apple imposed limitations, I can’t help but wonder how much access a dev
would have to any of the voices on the watch however. Loading additional voices
would probably be difficult because of memory constraints I would imagine.

Best regards,

Rick Alfaro

On the other hand, I love talking watches. That having been said, I like the
announcements at the top and bottom of the hour but I’d also like to be able to
turn off the hourly and half hourly announcements at will. For example,
sitting in church is not a great time for your watch to shout out and it always
seems like at those times it’s shouting it’s ten o’clock AM! People think your
playing with your watch instead of paying attention! LOL!

Hi,

What a great idea.

I'm no developer but one quick way might bde to have the taps in a morse code
number pattern so all you'd need to learn are the ten different number rhythms
so for 10-15 you'd have one tap slight gap followed by four evenly spaced taps,
a slight gap to the five evenly spaced taps for the zero, again the one tap
with slight gap to four evenly spaced taps for 1 andn five quick taps for the
5.

annoying and because usually when I want to know the time, I would like to be
subtle about checking. I don't know whether this ability is already built in,
though. And I have no idea whether there would be a way of activating such an
app silently; if not, there would be no point in the app.

My personal opinion is that barcode will never ever b e an good solution
for us blind. ok. if you want mark e.g cd-s or other then it mait be
usefull. I have tryed digit eyes in supermrkets and other shops withaut
any bigger luck. the barcode must be in a very good condition in order
to digit eyes and other should vork.
So my belive is that we may have to wait for RFID-tags wich will coming
very soon hopefully. And also apple must opend up for other developer
except from apple pay.

I agree with you Richard about Digit-Eyes being the go to app. I just want to
add that the camera on any iPhone is linear. Hence, it takes lots of practice
finding those barcodes. I don't know which USB barcode scanner you are using,
but it's probably an Omni directional type. Therefore, capturing the barcode is
easier to find then on the phone's camera. I've been using Digit-Eyes since it
came out and I still have problems from time to time capturing the barcodes.
I'm using an iPhone 6 with 8.3. My extensive use of the app is creating my own
barcode labels for my work files and important docs. HTH.

Re: Any problems when updating to iTunes 12.1.2?

2015-04-13 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I have a 32-bit, Windows Vista machine, and updated to iTunes 12.1.2 earlier
today. I didn't know anything about its possibly causing problems before
reading these messages. So far, it has not caused any problems. What kind of
problems should I be expecting? I always wait until I get the prompt when
logging into iTunes that there is an update before updating. That has always
served me well, except for the issue several updates ago that would give the
error that some dll file couldn't be found. .

I doubt it will do any harm.
I found the info about the 64 bit older video cards by searching the web.
If I had a 32 bit machine, I might have called Apple before updating to make
sure.

tricky thing if one simply checks the update status in iTunes and goes ahead

possibly do harm to future update possibilities?

Interesting.

Thanks, Richard. I googled this after you wrote and found this.

This iTunes installer is only for Windows 64 bit systems that are unable to
support iTunes video playback requirements on older and low end video cards.
Only use this installer if you were directed to this page by the below alert
message from iTunes 12.1 or later. Using this installer on an incorrect system
may prevent your system from getting the correct iTunes installer in the future.

If you were directed to this page by an alert from iTunes, follow these
steps:

1.Download the iTunes installer to your Windows desktop

2.Locate the iTunes64Setup.exe and double click to run the installer

3.Install as you normally would. Your iTunes library will not be affected.

I Didn’t.

It says that it is for 64 bit systems with old video cards.

I have a 64 bit system, but I don’t think it is an older video card, but I
went ahead and updated anyway.

No difference to me so far.

The subject says it all. If you have updated to the new iTunes 12.1.2, did
you experience any problems with the new version?

Re: Tap Tap See

2015-04-13 Thread Aliya Nurullina
Hi everyone. I don't have any TapTapSee credits at the moment. But in my
iPhone 5S running iOS 8.3 CamFind is not working too. I mean after
taking a photo it after a couple of second of waiting says trouble
sending image. But i hope it doesn't mean that the amazing service is
stopped. It probably is due to problem with their server or the new iOS
update. Anyway there is no any information about stopping the service on
their Twitter. So we just have to provide them feedback about it.

Have a nice day.

Ya know how when you go to a web page, when you hit a sign on button,
it does a few clicks and stuff, well, that's not even working. Any ideas?

RE: Sonos questions

2015-04-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Louise,

Welcome to Sonos, hopefully you’ll love it as much as most of us who have
invested in it. I am going to try and answer your questions in your message:

1. Has anyone found the add services screen to be a bit inaccessible as
you cannot flick through the services?

Yes, you do have to drag your finger and use a 3-finger flick up or down to
change pages. It is a bit awkward and probably the least accessible part of the
app although it’s also not inaccessible. The good thing is that once your
services are set up you don’t usually have to go back unless you are adding a
new service, want to delete one or change the login credentials.

2. Can you only shuffle spotify playlists using the IPad as a controller
as I cannot find a shuffle button on the IPhone app anywhere?

That one I can’t answer since I don’t have an iPad and I only had a Spotify
subscription for a short time. The Spotify implementation inside the Sonos app
is extremely basic which I understand is not the fault of Sonos but a
restriction from Spotify and other music services, especially Deezer, are much
better on Sonos especially since I can get Deezer Elite with lossless streaming
through Sonos and pretty much all aspects of the service are available from
inside Sonos and accessible. I didn’t like how Spotify worked at all and also
found that here in Canada Deezer had way more content.

3. Is there a way for my partner to be able to search and play music
which is on my IPad using his IPhone or IPad? Similarly can I search and see
the music on my IPad using my IPhone? I do not have music match but have saved
music onto my IPad as it has more space than my phone. Or can I only search the
music on that particular device I am using?

Unless you have all your music also in a shared folder on a computer (which has
to be on of course) you can only see the music on the device you are using and
you can’t browse each other’s library. I find I rarely use the feature to
browse music on my device since I have all my music ripped in lossless FLAC
format to an external network attached hard drive. This way I can always access
all my music in the best possible quality from my iPhone or the PC Sonos
desktop controller without the need for my computer to be on and my wife can
access the same music from the Sonos app on her iPhone or iPod Touch as well.

Hope this helps,

Sieghard

Re: The book Apple Watch Without Watching has been cancelled for now, refunds being issued

2015-04-13 Thread Christopher Hallsworth

Hi Jonathan,
Thank you for the notice, and thank you in advance for the refund. This
shows you care about your customers very much. Too many companies, big
or small, seem to care about its business and place their customers
second. Apple, on the other hand, is a huge exception smile. Just my
£0.02 UK worth.

On 13/04/2015 19:20, Jonathan Mosen wrote:

I've used one
such service before to receive products from the US Apple Store, without an
issue.
I waited until I had placed the order and received a confirmation email before letting
people know that Apple Watch Without Watching was available for pre-order.

Re: a very strange download problem when updating the new IOS 8.3

2015-04-13 Thread Kathy Brandt
The same thing happened to me. In order to download I had to do a combination
flick and slide motion which eventually brought up what I would have been used
to seeing if things would have been normal. This isn't intuitive, because a
person would've had to think to try this in order to get the update process
started, which shouldn't have been necessary when it wasn't before.

Hi Jed,
I had the same issue as you. When doing previous updates I've been able to
flick over to the Download button and double-tap it, but I got the bong just
as you did. I exited the screen, came back in and found the download
button, which VoiceOver said was dimmed, but I persevered and was able to
start the update, sort of by gosh and by golly, and eventually get it done.
I think Apple Accessibility definitely needs to look into this, so I'm going
to cc them on this message so they know it's not just me that's run into
this issue.

Hey guys,

OK, i don't know whether i should be concerned or what, but i have never
seen this before. I went to settings, and general, and software update
to go get the new 8.3.
When i clicked software update, i flicked right, it said software update
heading, then i flicked once more, and all i heard was a click sound,
then if i flicked again i heard the bong which means you're at the end
of where you can go. I'd enver had this happen before. In order to get
to the download of the IOS, i had to go all over the screen to find the
button to click on. This is a concern, as this has never happened
before. Any ideas, could something be wrong?

Re: what am I doing wrong with the latest fleksy update?

2015-04-13 Thread Harry Bell
You need to start by going to Settings, General, Accessibility, Voiceover,
Typing Style and ensure it is set to Standard Typing (not Touch Typing) and
Typing Feedback too Characters and Words. Then in General, go to Keyboard,
Keyboards and Add new Keyboard. When you add Fleksy, then go into the Fleksy
app itself: you will be prompted to change from the iOS keyboard to Fleksy by
double tapping on the Change Keyboard key to the left of the space bar and then
go into its Settings to Allow Full Access (I think that is the phrase that pops
up). As you use Fleksy to type, swipe. Right after each word you type and
Fleksy reads out the word. Whew! Nharry

Re: Help syncing music to my iPhone with iTunes

Ah, I figured it out not long after I sent this message. I used the F6

syncing.

I click the iPhone button and check my sync settings by just tabbing
through everything.

* I have automatically sync unchecked.
* I also have sync over wifi unchecked.
* Sync only checked songs and videos is checked.
* Prefer standard definition videos is unchecked.
* Convert higher bit rate songs is unchecked.

When I click on the sync button, the sync only takes a few seconds,

I've Google around for solutions, and I haven't come up with anything.
I've tried a bunch of the usual trouble shooting steps, such as

iTunes, and I haven't found anything that works. I'm at my whits end,
and I'm hoping someone will have a suggestion! Thanks everyone, I'm sure
it's something stupid, but I know I've done this in the past.

Re: Anyone having barred issues?

2015-04-13 Thread Wayne Merritt
Yes, I have had the BARD Mobile app crash multiple times, most often
when deleting a book from my bookshelf but it also has happened when I
was scrolling through the bookshelf. For instance, going from books
1-4 to books 5-9. I don't recall the ap crashing nearly as much in iOS
8.2 and below. Probably something to do with 8.3 but who knows. The
more people that let NLS know about it the better chance we have of
getting it fixed, not to mention hopefully getting an update to the
app in general. For what it's worth, I'm using an iPhone 6.

Since 8.3 the app crashes when I go beyond the first 50 items in my wish

list, i'm booted back into the main folder. However, thankfully, the
download resumes when I reopen from the app switcher.

Re: What Apple Watch apps would you like me to develop?

2015-04-13 Thread Alan J Paganelli
On the other hand, I love talking watches. That having been said, I like the
announcements at the top and bottom of the hour but I’d also like to be able to
turn off the hourly and half hourly announcements at will. For example,
sitting in church is not a great time for your watch to shout out and it always
seems like at those times it’s shouting it’s ten o’clock AM! People think your
playing with your watch instead of paying attention! LOL!

Hi,

What a great idea.
I'm no developer but one quick way might bde to have the taps in a morse code
number pattern so all you'd need to learn are the ten different number rhythms
so for 10-15 you'd have one tap slight gap followed by four evenly spaced taps,
a slight gap to the five evenly spaced taps for the zero, again the one tap
with slight gap to four evenly spaced taps for 1 andn five quick taps for the
5.

  Hello Todd,

If this ability doesn't already exist, I'd like to have the ability to check
the time silently. Maybe the watch could tap for the number of hours, then tens
of minutes, then minutes. I've never liked talking watches because they're
annoying and because usually when I want to know the time, I would like to be
subtle about checking. I don't know whether this ability is already built in,
though. And I have no idea whether there would be a way of activating such an
app silently; if not, there would be no point in the app.

  Best,

Hi there. You may know me from my apps like All Access which offers talking

I ordered an Apple Watch and wanted to hear directly from you as to what
kind of apps you would like to have to make an Apple Watch useful.

You can email me directly at t...@toddbernhard.com or to the group which I

your feedback.

Thanks!
