Re: Siri & punctuation

2015-12-24 Thread Jewel
My sister who is not far off 70 and is, relatively, new to texting enfuriates
me when she uses shorthand such as writing u where she should be writing y o u.
I had reason to congratulate a young man, 18 years old I think, on the beauty
of his texts, no shorthand, correct punctuation and everything. He replied
that it was showing respect, so from his reply, he may have texted his
contemporary friends in a, completely, different style.

I read something last week saying you are taken less seriously if you use
punctuation in messages. I believe the study was of younger people. I don’t
recall the ages when this does and does not apply.

No one should ever take me seriously!

Yeah. Try saying question mark as opposed to just question.

Is there a way to indicate a question mark if I am having Siri dictate a text

captures the word question.

headphone sound not right and not hearing what I should

2015-12-24 Thread Paul Ferrara
All, my iPhone 6 makes a crackling sound when plugging in the earpods; I
probably will have to get it fixed.

But when plugging in the pods, I hear nothing except when siri is on and the
screen is locked, I hear the sound of the siri voice through the pods. If I
make a call, I hear the call in the earpods and can navigate in other apps
while the call is going on, but as soon as the call is over, voiceover stops
speaking through the headphones.

I have tried 2 sets of earpods, rebooted the phone twice, no clue.

Ideas welcome please.

Thank you.

Weird iPhone issue just now.

2015-12-24 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

So I was using my wife’s 5S running iOS 9.2 earlier today and out of the
blue, Voiceover started to stutter a bit and then it suddenly started making
weird buzzing noises. Similar to that old fax transmission tone. I tried
turning VO off and back on, but when VO came back, the buzzing/beeping came
back with it. While VO was off, the phone seemed fine. She’s sighted so
she’s not a VO user and could use the iPhone with no issues. Also, I was
getting no Siri feedback when I tried making an inquiry.

Finally, she just turned the phone completely off and back on. That seemed
to do the trick. I have been able to use it with no problems so far.

Has anyone encountered this sort of problem before?

Thanks,

iPhone classes

2015-12-24 Thread Verlyn Baldwin
Hello Group,

Having had my first Apple device (5S) for less than a week, I am wondering
if I would benefit from attending an iPhone class at the Verizon store.
And/or setting an appointment with the Apple store.

Being without any useable vision I am just getting used to VO and Siri and
the gestures.

Your sharing your experiences and recommendations is appreciated.

Instant pot multi use appliance with accessible iPhone app

2015-12-24 Thread Mary Otten
Hi all,
There has been a lot of talk on certain cooking related websites this past year
about an appliance known as an instant pot. It is a multi use appliance, which
combines the functionality of slow cooker, pressure cooker, rice cooker, sauté
pan, and some other stuff. I was interested in this device, until I finally
found an article that went into enough detail to convince me that it would not
be usable by a blind person.
Then just today, I found a podcast done by Victor Saren on applevis. He
demonstrates the Bluetooth app which makes the most expensive variant of the
instant pot accessible to blind people. This is not a cheap appliance. But it
may be under someone's Christmas tree tomorrow. I would be very curious if
there's anyone on any of these lists who has or will be getting this pot and
how you like it and the app. There are recipes on the instant pot website. And
I have found some recipes on another website. You can also adapt pressure
cooker recipes for it, but it cooks at a slightly lower pressure than the usual
stovetop pressure cookers. The app also lets you enter your own recipes. There
is also going to be or is, an android app

This question, is truly personal. I have learned the iPad without help, let

look into something like this. But depending on what you're stuck on, asking

RE: My experience of listening to the Beatles in Apple Music, and what will be available?

2015-12-24 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi Arnold and all.

I’m at my Brother’s house, and I haven’t seen any email since early December 24
my time. According to what I read the Beatles content would be available at
12:01 a.m. on the 24th. This led me to believe that the individual tracks
would be able to be streamed at that time. I checked out the Beatles on Apple
Music, and it was broadcasting interviews with the members of the group, so I
thought it would be a kind of radio station to hear their thoughts when they
were around. I did some other things that night, and a few hours later I tried
again, and the individual songs are available. I found that if you tell Siri
“Play the Beatles”, you hear the same tracks, but you can specify others, and
it works well. Evidently Apple meant the service would be live at 12:01
Pacific time. In any case it works great!

Merry Christmas to all!

Re: Siri & punctuation

Hello,
I also hate text writing, actually, and I'm actually younger than 18. IN my
opinion, writing properly shows that the person cares. I totally understand

problem with Paypal and Apple ID

2015-12-24 Thread susan
Hi listers,
Happy holidays to everyone.

Earlier today I attempted to sign up for the Apple music 3-month free trial. I
completed the info on my phone but when it came to the payment method field I
was advised that my device was not associated with Paypal and to fix this on
myPC. However, the settings concerning management of my Apple ID on my PC seem
to indicate that 3 devices—my PC, Ipod Touch and Iphone 5—are all associated
with the Apple ID. I managed to get to the Ipal login screen but it timed out
before I figured out what if anything needed to happen. I had phoned Ipal tech
support yesterday because of an ongoing problem with the debit card I was using
and their response was particularly unhelpful, so much so that I never really
got to the question about the association of my Apple ID. I have been able to
make app and music purchases from the PC and synch them to the phone, but not
the reverse. Adding another card to my Paypal account has not changed anything.
Is there anything I need to do so I can activate this subscription and/or make
purchases on my phone or am I better off trying to use another payment method
and getting Paypal out of the picture completely? Guess I’m saying I’m not sure
if this is an Itunes or a Paypal problem or just user error. Hope I’ve
explained this clearly enough. Any advice and full instructions much
appreciated as I think I’ve missed some simple but fundamental step. Tia.

Susan

Merry Christmas to you! The name of the game you are searching for is

it appears to have been removed from the app store.

Re: iPhone classes

2015-12-24 Thread Mary Otten
My guess is that they class at the Verizon store would be a total waste of your
time. The folks there have no clue about voiceover. The Apple Store might be a
better experience. But you might also check out the podcasts available from
Applevis. If you learn well that way, that could be another option and it
wouldn't cost you anything.

I don't know if this will work for you but if the hour between medicating is
fixed, you could set a timer and simply restart it each time it goes off.

Just upload it to your iphone with iTunes. No need to wonder about
any middleman telling you what you can and can't listen to.

RE: Controlling the contacts/messages that are initiated with 3D touch

2015-12-24 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Chermeen,

It would probably be a lot more fun if it wasn't -42 with the windchill today.
I just tried a bit, but this is really for covering targeted areas and we'll
try a couple of them first where I thought I may have lost it. To cover a three
quarter mile long driveway with a dinner plate size metal detector is pretty
tedious and you really have to be right over top of the item for it to buzz,
it's not like you hold it 2 feet up in the air and it does 2 or 3 feet in
either direction.

Awesome! Walking around with a metal detector actually sounds like it would be
quite fun!

And also, if anyone knows how I can solve my problem with 3d touch and the
messages app, I'd love suggestions ;) LOL

I just say the words, question mark and it puts it in. If you just say the
word, question, it puts in the word.

Is there a way to indicate a question mark if I am having Siri dictate a text
message for me and I’m asking the recipient a question? When I try, it
captures the word question.

RE: looking for an accessible reminder app for traveling

2015-12-24 Thread SSEric
Use Alarmed. Note the past tense E D.

I just tried and you can set multiple timers for either count down or count
up.

This would just be a timer and not tied to the time so it could work.

I do have the paid version of this, so I am not positive the free version
has it. Give it a look.

I am not sure how you would set recurring reminders unless they are tied to
some kind of clock. I mean the reminders would have to recur every number
of hours or something like that, and in order for the app to calculate the
recurring time, it would have to be tied to a clock.

The only solution I can think of is that you set your clock on your phone to
either remain at your local time, or set it to GMT time, which would keep
your clock at the same standard no matter where you are.

If you left your clock at your local time, then you could just use Siri to
check the local time where you are currently.

Hope this helps.

It used to be that when I clicked on a link in an email from Facebook or

cannot get this to happen. When I click on a message in Facebook for

it, Safari opens. Anyone know how to make this adjustment? I'd rather work

message for me and I’m asking the recipient a question? When I try, it
captures the word question.

Adjusting time of new text reminder?

2015-12-24 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, so I haven't found any setting that will make this adjustment. I'd like
to adjust or turn off the fact that after I get a new text message, about two
minutes later it reminds me again. I'm curious why this is the way it is. Can I
make a change to this behavior?
Thanks,
Matthew

2015-12-24 Thread John Panarese
You can’t adjust the time, but in Settings, Notification Center and then
Messages, you can set how many times it repeats. You can turn it off entirely
if that is your desire.

Since iOS 9 you can attach the files from DropBox and other cloud

  Hi!
I tried Outlook app some time ago and I didn't liked it at
all. Wouldn't know if they did something with accessibility
and usability meanwhile. I also tried MailBox by DropBox and
it was disaster at the time I tried it. Gmail and Mail.ru
app are better but i really hate Gmails forced threaded view
and Mail.ru has that also plus some buttons are not clearly
labeled.
So for the time beeing, I'm sticking with the native Mail
app. I had some issues with opening large conversations with
lots of replies back on my 4S but with 6S Plus it runs
smoothly.

Hello,
To me, anyway, this sounds like an SMTP issue. And while I roughly know how to,
I'd rather someone else details how to modify SMTP settings. I tried it with
GMX, but LOL, it wouldn't send or receive I couldn't get it to work. Haven't
tried recently, though.

looking for an accessible reminder app for traveling

2015-12-24 Thread Dave

Hi, i am traveling over seas on a long hall flight.

I need to take medication at regular intervals, and as i will be going through
various time zones, i am looking for an app that works independently of the
iPhone clock, as this will change automaticly as i pass through different
countries.

So basicly, i want an app that is fully accessible with voiceover, where i can
set recurring reminders or alarms.

PS.

for anyone who might suggest using the native alarm app, this won’t work, as it
works off the iPhone Clock.

Hope someone can help,

Dave and Maria.

You should be able to use the native reminders app, as, while your phone is in
airplane mode, the clock will not change.

RE: Siri & punctuation

2015-12-24 Thread SSEric
I read something last week saying you are taken less seriously if you use
punctuation in messages. I believe the study was of younger people. I don't
recall the ages when this does and does not apply.

No one should ever take me seriously!

Yeah. Try saying question mark as opposed to just question.

Is there a way to indicate a question mark if I am having Siri dictate a
text message for me and I'm asking the recipient a question? When I try,
it captures the word question.

I don't know if this will work for you but if the hour between medicating is
fixed, you could set a timer and simply restart it each time it goes off.
