Re: Voice Dream Reader and browsing/downloading books?

2015-12-25 Thread Gordan Radić

Hi!
I'll try to answer some of your questions.
I don't use Bookshare so I wouldn't know if is it working or not and
you could check Applevis to see if there's some podcast on VDR.
1. VDR has the language auto detection, not voice detection. If you
browse VDR Settings/Manage my voices you can there buy/install
language voices and if you have multiple voices for single language,
you can set the prefered voice for that language plus set the
default speed, pitch and volume for every single voice. Defaults set
here are applied on every new book opening.
For instance, if you set American English Heather as prefered voice
for English with 300 words per minute, pitch on 80 and volume on 50%
every newly opened book in English language will open with Heather,
300 wpm and pitch 80 and volume 50%.
You can change those setings on the fly while listening the book but
the changes apply only on the book you're listening at the moment.
2. VDR doesn't read books directly from DropBox or any other cloud
service. Every book is downloaded and converted to some VDR internal
format and you can read it while offline.
3. You can edit/select the books directly in VDR and you can,
amongst other things, delete selected titles. VDR has basic iTunes
support for transfering books via cable from PC or Mac but it
doesn't use iTunes library.
Merry Christmas to you too and congrats on the nice present. VDR for
iOS is the best ten bucks I ever spent.
HTH!

There are some people at some Apple stores who know VoiceOver and/or zoom. I
doubt anyone at the Verizon store would.

Call your local apple store and see if they have anyone familiar with the
accessibility feature you would need.

Also, there are some good basic videos at www.hadley.edu

And a variety of podcasts and written instructions at www.applevis.com

Hello Group,

Having had my first Apple device (5S) for less than a week, I am wondering if I
would benefit from attending an iPhone class at the Verizon store. And/or
setting an appointment with the Apple store.

Being without any useable vision I am just getting used to VO and Siri and the
gestures.

Your sharing your experiences and recommendations is appreciated.

Re: Voice Dream Reader and browsing/downloading books?

2015-12-25 Thread Mary Otten
Yes, you can add books from book share. From the home screen or from the folder
to which you want to add your book share books, you should find an add button
down in the lower left corner of your screen. Double tap that. Then double tap
on book share which is also down in the lower left. You will then see a number
of choices, starting at the top with the search, which lets you type in a
search for a title or an author and then double tap the search button. You can
also select category and then pick the category want, or latest, which gives
you a long list of the latest books added to book share. You scroll through and
Double tap the download button you find next to the title you want to
download. Or, if you see a title you'd like more information on before
downloading, double tap the title, and on the next screen, you will find a
synopsis. If you decide you want the book, there is a download button near the
top of that screen. If you don't want to, go back and resume you're scrolling
or search. Deleting books is easy. When you have books either in a folder that
you're looking at or just on the main screen if you didn't make any folders and
have books there, you can find the title you would like to delete, then just
flick up with the rotor said to action, and you will be presented with the
choice to delete like what happens in mail. Double tap and you're done. The
book is gone. I can't answer your language question, as I have only read
English books in this app.

As far as I know, you cannot use IMDB to watch a movie, it is just to help you
make a list of movies you want to watch and I suspect set alerts when it is
available in your area or something.

I only use the app for information.

RE: iPhone classes

2015-12-25 Thread Richard Turner
There are some people at some Apple stores who know VoiceOver and/or zoom. I
doubt anyone at the Verizon store would.

Call your local apple store and see if they have anyone familiar with the
accessibility feature you would need.

Also, there are some good basic videos at www.hadley.edu

And a variety of podcasts and written instructions at www.applevis.com

Having had my first Apple device (5S) for less than a week, I am wondering if I

Being without any useable vision I am just getting used to VO and Siri and the

  Hi!
I'll try to answer some of your questions.
I don't use Bookshare so I wouldn't know if is it working or
not and you could check Applevis to see if there's some
  podcast on VDR.
  1. VDR has the language auto detection, not voice detection.
If you browse VDR Settings/Manage my voices you can there
buy/install language voices and if you have multiple voices
for single language, you can set the prefered voice for that
language plus set the default speed, pitch and volume for
every single voice. Defaults set here are applied on every new
  book opening.
For instance, if you set American English Heather as prefered
voice for English with 300 words per minute, pitch on 80 and
volume on 50% every newly opened book in English language will
open with Heather, 300 wpm and pitch 80 and volume 50%.
You can change those setings on the fly while listening the
book but the changes apply only on the book you're listening
  at the moment.
  2. VDR doesn't read books directly from DropBox or any other
cloud service. Every book is downloaded and converted to some
VDR internal format and you can read it while offline.
  3. You can edit/select the books directly in VDR and you can,
amongst other things, delete selected titles. VDR has basic
iTunes support for transfering books via cable from PC or Mac
but it doesn't use iTunes library.
Merry Christmas to you too and congrats on the nice present.
VDR for iOS is the best ten bucks I ever spent.

Hi, this sounds nice. I do have a multi cooker similar to this, but not

Subject: Instant pot multi use appliance with accessible iPhone app

Hi all,
There has been a lot of talk on certain cooking related websites this past year
about an appliance known as an instant pot. It is a multi use appliance, which
combines the functionality of slow cooker, pressure cooker, rice cooker, sauté
pan, and some other stuff. I was interested in this device, until I finally
found an article that went into enough detail to convince me that it would not
be usable by a blind person.
Then just today, I found a podcast done by Victor Saren on applevis. He
demonstrates the Bluetooth app which makes the most expensive variant of the
instant pot accessible to blind people. This is not a cheap appliance. But it
may be under someone's Christmas tree tomorrow. I would be very curious if
there's anyone on any of these lists who has or will be getting this pot and
how you like it and the app. There are recipes on the instant pot website. And
I have found some recipes on another website. You can also adapt pressure
cooker recipes for it, but it cooks at a slightly lower pressure than the usual
stovetop pressure cookers. The app also lets you enter your own recipes. There
is also going to be or is, an android app

Re: iPhone classes

2015-12-25 Thread Shai
Hello Verlyn,
If you reside in the United States (which I think you do given that
you brought up taking classes at the Verizon store), you may want to
check out the classes offered by your local Braille Institute. This
place may have a program called Connection Point or some other name
which trains students on technology such as the iPhone.
Contacting your local Apple store to see if someone there has
knowledge of VoiceOver, asking questions on list or listening to
podcasts on AppleVis are also good alternatives.
Good luck on getting trained with the accessibility features on iPhone.

Re: A podcast for using Itunes and Ipod shuffle

2015-12-25 Thread Gordan Radić

Hi!
If I'm remembering well, someone sent you a podcast to download via
SendSpace in the last few days.
Regarding Shuffle description, it's easy and simple. You have a
square case with the belt clip on the back side and the round shaped
buttons on the front. The correct way to hold and operate it is when
the side buttons are up and you facing the round buttons.
So, on a top side there are two things; on the right is
three-position switch where you select between off, normal and
shuffle playback and the button in top side center is Voice Over
button.
On the front side you have circle with four functions plus the
center round button. If you compare the circle with a clock, than
the 12 o'clock position is volume up, 3 o'clock is next/ff, 6
o'clock is volume down and the 9 o'clock is previous/rewind.
The center button is play/pause.
If you press and hold the play/pause button during playback you can
lock or unlock the keys.
Hate iTunes or not, it is the only safe and reliable solution to
operate and transfer data between PC and iDevices so my suggestion
is to get used to it.

accessible. I think I am going to sell the one I have and give this one a try.

There
is also going to be or is, an android app Mary

Fleksy Keyboard

2015-12-25 Thread Gordan Radić

Hi!
Few years ago Fleksy was commonly used amongst blind iOS users. I
tried it back then but since it didn't support my native language I
gave it up. Today I installed the new Fleksy keyboard which now
supports more than 40 languages including Croatian but it seems to
me it doesn't work as weel as it worked earlier. I didn't try to
type in English so I can't say is this for fact or the Croatian
dictionary is bad. I noticed it only comes up with suggestions with
the same first letter and it doesn't suggest other words based on
letters positions as id did before in English.
What are your experiences with the new fleksy?

RE: iPhone classes

2015-12-25 Thread Paul Roberts
Hi Kelly,

I bought my 5S in march 2014, as my Nokia phone's on/off switch had fallen off.

I decided, after an hour or so's one to one, to buy the Iphone and am glad I
did, even though it took me a while to get used to it.

I am very good at some things but stil a little slower with other things but I
wouldn't be without the phone now as it's so much better than my other mobiles
and you can do far more with the Iphones.

When I bought my iPhone 5 in 2012, I was provided a one hour tutorial
on voiceOver on at Apple store when I told them that this was my first
cell phone ever. After the tutorial, I realized how many fundamentals
I needed to learn and to become accustomed to using a touch screen
interface. Even though the trainer at the Apple store was sighted, he
was as proficient at voiceOver as experienced blind foiceOver users.
It took me two to three months of practice to become comfortable
navigating the iPhone's touch screen interface. this is something
that doesn't come through teaching but through practice.

Hello,
No offence, but try changing from note takers with keyboards, to a touch only
device. Don't get me wrong, I found the process easy, but I actually wanted
nothing to do with touch screen devices, till I had to. I always blamed apple
for not giving us keyboards, but I don't think I could be without the iPad,

Re: iPhone classes

2015-12-25 Thread Gordan Radić

Hi to all!
Everything you say is right and correct. I got my 4S in late 2012.
after using Nokia for seven years or so. I had issues with adjusting
to touch screen technology but after a week or two everything set in
its place. In the mid of 2013. my girlfriend bought iPhone 5 and she
was crazy for the first two weeks, she almost crashed it against the
wall. After some convincing and training some weeks after she said:
'I could never go back to Nokia'.
It takes some learning curve to achieve some level of confidence and
when you do that the most common every day usage comes to four-way
flicking with one finger, single and double tapping with one or two
fingers and accasional flicking with three fingers. Everything else
is used from time to time.

Battery usage and level indicator

2015-12-25 Thread Kimberly
Hi,

Ever since yesterday something weird is going on with my battery level
indicator. When I plug in the phone, the indicator says charging but the
percentage shown either increases very slowly or not at all. I'm not sure if
there is a problem with my battery or the indicator.

I have done all the usual stuff like empty the app switcher, reboot the phone,
reset network settings but nothing has corrected the issue. Previously my phone
would charge really fast when placed in airplane mode, but now even airplane
isn't doing the trick.

When I look under battery in settings, I see a standby time of 25 hours and a

Re: Battery usage and level indicator

2015-12-25 Thread Gordan Radić

Hello!
Few months ago similar thing happened to me with my old 4S. The
difference is I didn't get the message 'Charging' with acompanying
sound but the battery maintained at some percentage and would
actually charge till about 50%.
I tried everything but complete restoring to factory settings and it
didn't help. So, I took it to the service shop and they said that
thunderbolt connector is dead. They replaced it and now it works
well.

Re: Fleksy Keyboard

2015-12-25 Thread Alan Lemly
I've found that the Fleksy keyboard has steadily gotten better with
accessibility since it first came out but I'm not sure that's a recommendation
considering how poor it was out of the starting gate.

I think the Fleksy keyboard is probably good enough now that one can be
productive with it. However, I kept my original copy of the Fleksy VO app which
I find much better and easier to use than it's keyboard iteration.
Unfortunately, this app is no longer available in the Apps store.
