Podcasts app: Can't set custom settings for subscriptions

2015-12-30 Thread Grant
Hi all,

I’m using iOS 9.2 and the native Podcasts app. When I go into the settings app,
I am able to choose which episodes I want downloaded and whether I want played
episodes to be deleted. But I used to be able to override these defaults for
individual subscriptions, and for whatever reason I cannot do this now. When I
open the Podcasts app and choose an individual podcast, there is a settings
button where I can see all the settings I want to change—but they're dimmed and
can’t be modified. Is this an issue others are experiencing?

Thanks,

Grant

RE: Answering a telephone call while you are already talking to another caller on your iphone

2015-12-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Sherry,

Joseph was referring to buttons on the touch screen not the physical mute
“switch”. When a call is in progress, you have the following buttons on the
screen (you may have to hide the keypad if it is on the screen, the hide button
is to the right of the 0 near the bottom right of the screen). The following
buttons are listed in the order they appear from top to bottom. above them you
first have the name or phone number you are calling and the call duration
counter. If you put a call on hold, the call duration counter is rreplaced with
the word “Hold”. Here now the buttons:

Mute

Keypad

Speaker

Add Call

Facetime Video

Contacts

End Call

On my iPhone 5S with iOS 9.2 the behavior is such that whenever I call a number
the keypad seems to be displayed. I don’t know if there is a way so that it
isn’t, but even if I hide it, hang up and then call the number again the keypad
is back and I first have to hide it in order to get to the above mentioned
buttons.

If you simply double tap the Mute button on the screen, it will be announced by
Voiceover as “selected” but you don’t notice a differencve. If you try/practice
by calling some automated number like maybe your telephone banking number or
credit card company, you continue to hear the announcements, if you were
talking to somebody you could still hear their end of the conversation, but if
Mute is on the microphone is muted and the other side won’t hear you.

If you double tap and hold on the mute button, a call is placed on an actual
hold. This means you don’t hear anything and the other side doesn’t hear
anything. You have to hold rather long, it’s probably a good 3 seconds after
the double tap before it switches to “Hold”. As soon as it does the keypad
reappears and in order to take the call of Hold you have to first hide the
keypad again.

I am not sure why this is the case and to me this seems to be more of a bug
than anything that makes sense. You can dial numbers on the keypad while the
call is on hold and said numbers appear in an edit field above the keypad, but
at least as far as I can tell there is nothing you can really do with these
numbers, e.g. it doesn’t appear like I can actually call another number while
the first call is on hold, for example, if I was talking to somebody and maybe
I would want to call somebody else to ask a quick question then get back to the
first caller. On a multi-line office phone off course one can do this, you put
the caller on hold, call the other number on the other line, ask your question
or whatever and then hang up or put that line on hold while you get back to the
first call. When I dialed a number with one call on hold, I did not see a
“Call” button, just “End Call” and “Hide” in addition to the numbers, the Star
and Pound symbols.

Sieghard

On my 5s the mute button is a button you slide back & forth, you cannot hold it
down. So I’m still totally lost on how to put someone on hold while you take a
2nd call.

Apps are icons for sighted people, but the text is still there also. For
example, the Phone app is a small picture of a telephone, but it still says
"Phone".

I heard this recently on a podcast somewhere. In many cases when VoiceOver is
not on, the icon to open an app etc is just an image or picture. There is no
text.
If you want to show a sighted person what app or button you are ready to press,
you might want to go into the settings for VoiceOver and turn on "Large
Cursor". In iOS 8.4, this is the last item in the VoiceOver settings. The
podcast said that when "Large Cursor" is on, a line Is drawn around the icon
image.

Hi, Everyone.
I'm trying to help my sighted mom with her iPhone. I have an iPod Touch and
only use it to keep track of messages, do limited testing, and e-mail.

I have several questions and am hoping someone can clue me in.

1) What is the sighted equivalent for VO gestures? Is there a quick list I can
refer to?

2) My sister, who has an iPhone as well but lives in CA, sends info to me via
e-mail. I see my Mom's phone number listed in the "To" field as well, but when
I ask her whether she saw the message, she says no, I didn't get anything.
Where do I look on her phone to help her find what my sister sent? It doesn't
show up in the iMessage app, and her Mail account isn't set up. Ideas? (Mom and
I are both in HI.)

Thanks, as Always,
Dani

RE: IPAD Locked

2015-12-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You should be able to pull up the control centre from the lock screen and turn
WiFi on. Try and touch the status bar, like the time, then swipe up with 3
fingers. If a sighted person does this, they can do so the normal way, touch at
the very bottom just above the home button and swipe up, they'll know the
gesture if they have an iPhone or iPad. All they have to remember is that they
have to first touch WiFi, then do a double tap.

Hi friends,

Just wondering if anyone can help?
My work IPAD is locked and I have forgotten the password.
They are centrally managed by mobile ION but for some reason, the wifi has been
turned off so it is not able to talk back to the server so that they can send
it a password reset.
I Am unable to turn the wifi back on, SIRI needs wifi to work so I can't say
wifi on.
As voice over is on, my sighted colleagues are unable to flick the wifi at the
top of the screen to turn it back on.
Does anyone have any suggestions please?
If I could get wifi back on, it could be reset centrally.
I Have tried a three finger treble tap to turn off voice over but it won't turn
off.
I Have tried a home button treble click to turn off voice over but that won't
seem to work either.

that won't turn on WiFi. However, maybe rebooting Steven may jog his memory
*smile*.
Anyhow, one more thing which may make it easier for sighted people to turn on
WiFi via the control centre would be to turn off Voiceover which might be
possible if the triple click of the home button was configured to toggle
Voiceover; you can do this from the lock screen and if it does work then the
iPad would behave just like any iPad for a sighted person.

Only if there is some kind of color contrast between the engraving and the
surrounding surface.
The only way to find out is to try it since it will also depend on the font
used in the engraving on your particular piece.

It probably can, but sometimes, plaques and such use very fancy printing, or
other unusual fonts. As you know, unusual fonts and OCR oftentimes do not
work well together. Let us know how well it does.

disappearing messeages in ios

2015-12-30 Thread don bishop
Hi all,
If I get multiple messages on the iphone, it seems that only the last one stays
on the phone. I can't get to the others even though I haven't deleted them. I
have it set to keep messages on the phone forever.
Anyone have an idea as to what's going on and what to do about it?

Thanks,
Don

reading text documents in Dropbox on IOS 7

2015-12-30 Thread John Ylioja
I am a new member of the list. I am having trouble reading text-based
documents in the dropbox app on my iPhone 4 running IOS 7. VoiceOver
reads the heading with the file name and other items in the window such
as a comment button, but I can't find the text, either by using the
swipe gestures or explore by touch. I've tried searching the list
archives but couldn't find this specific problem discussed. This
trouble also happens with Microsoft Word documents. Is this a problem
with the app or is there anything else I can try? Does this issue also
happen with the app on later IOS versions?

Thanks,
John

Re: disappearing messeages in ios

2015-12-30 Thread Christopher Chaltain
You may have to scroll back through your old messages. If you've double
tapped on the message from that person, and you're now viewing your
conversation with that person then only the last few messages may be
visible on the screen. If you flick right through the content on that
screen, you'll just see your last message or two. To get to older messages,
get to the first message on the screen and then start flicking left. this
will scroll you back through your older messages.

I know this seems rather basic, but I don't want to assume.
Did you hit the back button in the upper left corner enough to get to the main

I have all my messages showing up unless I am in another conversation, or I've
deleted a conversation.
It always defaults to the last conversation I was reading.

Re: disappearing messeages in ios

2015-12-30 Thread Colin McDonald
when you read your messages, within the conversation window, do you find the
"send button" or "audio" button and then flick left to read the most recent
message? You should flick left across the text field, then attachments,
then the most recent message should appear with less recent messages
appearing to the left of that...

If you are doing this, what happens exactly?

No, they're definitely separate messages. I can read them when they come in
as notifications if I'm right there by the phone. The problem is that often
I don't catch the entire message, and the problem comes when I open the
message app to rereead them. Hope this makes sense.

when you say quick succession, how quick?
The reason I ask is because you may have message notifications set to
notify

you multiple times of the same message'''l a repeating notification of
the same message.
Which would make it appear as though you are getting multiple messages,
but

in fact you only have one unread message sitting there.
If you are talking about message notifications seconds apart, then this
isn't the issue.

are they audio messages?
If so, once the conversation has been opened, audio messages will only
stick

for 30 seconds before disappearing unless you set to keep them.
However, if they are regular messages, and not all from the same person,
then they will appear in different conversations within the messaging app.
If they are all from the same person, and disappearing, that is
unexplainable.
If you get say 3 messages from more than 1 person all in quick succession,
and you double tap one of those messages on the lock screen for instance,
you will go directly into that conversNot'''in order to see the messages
from other people, you do have to hit the back button to get back into the
main messaging app and flick right or left to find the most recent
messages

sent to y'''these will say "unread" before reading the senders name and
the message so you will know they are recent.

Re: disappearing messeages in ios

2015-12-30 Thread Billy Maynard

hi,

I'm a little late to this. If you're reading the same conversation
(multiple messages from the same person) if you're on the screen that hs
the heading (message) you'll need to click on the text message itself ot
read the hole converstion otherwise that view only shows the most resent
message. the hole conversation is hidden till you open up the conversation
window.

Hope this helps,
Billy Maynard

I know this seems rather basic, but I don't want to assume.
Did you hit the back button in the upper left corner enough to get to the
main screen?
I have all my messages showing up unless I am in another conversation, or
I've deleted a conversation.

It always defaults to the last conversation I was reading.

Hi all,
If I get multiple messages on the iphone, it seems that only the last one
stays on the phone. I can't get to the others even though I haven't
deleted them. I have it set to keep messages on the phone forever.

Anyone have an idea as to what's going on and what to do about it?

Thanks,

and you double tap one of those messages on the lock screen for instance,
you will go directly into that conversation...in order to see the messages
from other people, you do have to hit the back button to get back into the
main messaging app and flick right or left to find the most recent messages
sent to you...these will say "unread" before reading the senders name and
the message so you will know they are recent.

I know this seems rather basic, but I don't want to assume.
Did you hit the back button in the upper left corner enough to get to the
main screen?
I have all my messages showing up unless I am in another conversation, or
I've deleted a conversation.

It always defaults to the last conversation I was reading.

Hi all,
If I get multiple messages on the iphone, it seems that only the last one

deleted them. I have it set to keep messages on the phone forever.

Anyone have an idea as to what's going on and what to do about it?

Re: disappearing messeages in ios

2015-12-30 Thread Colin McDonald

when you say quick succession, how quick?
The reason I ask is because you may have message notifications set to notify
you multiple times of the same message...like a repeating notification of
the same message.
Which would make it appear as though you are getting multiple messages, but
in fact you only have one unread message sitting there.
If you are talking about message notifications seconds apart, then this
isn't the issue.

are they audio messages?
If so, once the conversation has been opened, audio messages will only stick
for 30 seconds before disappearing unless you set to keep them.
However, if they are regular messages, and not all from the same person,
then they will appear in different conversations within the messaging app.
If they are all from the same person, and disappearing, that is
unexplainable.
If you get say 3 messages from more than 1 person all in quick succession,

No, they're definitely separate messages. I can read them when they come in as
notifications if I'm right there by the phone. The problem is that often I
don't catch the entire message, and the problem comes when I open the message
app to rereead them. Hope this makes sense.

I think he nailed it.
If you haven't deleted the conversation yet, you can still go back and do that.

RE: accessible app for local news

2015-12-30 Thread SSEric
Don, you might try an app NewsOn. That is News On, but it is written as one
word in the app store.

It has the news from various TV stations around the country. I believe they
said they had 133 stations. You could check to see if anything local to you
is there.

The app is free. It seemed accessible. I tried it a few times, but TV news
really isn't my thing, so I dropped it.

I am a huge news junky and I am working with some of the app developers on
making the apps more accessible. Please allow them a couple to three
updates and hopefully this will be fixed.

2015-12-30 Thread SSEric
I just discovered this the other day. Maybe I am the only one who didn't
know about it.

If you are on your home screen, you can 3-finger swipe right. It brings up
all sorts of interesting stuff. The last few people you called/messaged,
local stores, restaurants, bars, etc., several news headlines.

I haven't seen anyone talk about this, so it was a neat discovery. Maybe
there is something I did to populate this screen and a way to add even more
information?

2015-12-30 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't know how to make that the default, but you can go into the
Mailboxes list and double tap the Unread mailbox to see only your unread
messages. If you don't see that mailbox listed then double tap the edit
button and make sure that the Unread mailbox is selected and then hit
the done button.

Re: Voice Dream Reader and browsing/downloading books?

2015-12-30 Thread Gordan Radić

Hi!
1. If you are reading using Voice Over, as you described you need to
have your screen unlocked. If you are reading using he built in
voices and the transport controls you can easily start playback,
lock the screen, put the phone in your pocket and control the
playback from the lock screen or headset.
2. Not using Bookshare so let someone else answer.

Two additional questions on Voice Dream...
1) I'm curious of the advantages of using the built in speech option within Voice Dream as opposed to using the two finger swipe down and letting my normal IOS voice do the job. Other than being able to pick a different voice you may like better, what are the advantages that I'm not seeing yet to using the built in reader function?

2) Also, Bookshare used to offer a way to skim for New York Times best sellers on their site. Can you find that same search option somehow within Voice Dream? I didn't see if the other day when I was setting up my new Voice Dream.

Yes, you can add books from book share. From the home screen or from the folder to which you want to add your book share books, you should find an add button down in the lower left corner of your screen. Double tap that. Then double tap on book share which is also down in the lower left. You will then see a number of choices, starting at the top with the search, which lets you type in a search for a title or an author and then double tap the search button. You can also select category and then pick the category want, or latest, which gives you a long list of the latest books added to book share. You scroll through and Double tap the download button you find next to the title you want to download. Or, if you see a title you'd like more information on before downloading, double tap the title, and on the next screen, you will find a synopsis. If you decide you want the book, there is a download button near the top of that screen. If you don't want to, go back and resume you're scroll
ing or search. Deleting books is easy. When you have books either in a folder that you're looking at or just on the main screen if you didn't make any folders and have books there, you can find the title you would like to delete, then just flick up with the rotor said to action, and you will be presented with the choice to delete like what happens in mail. Double tap and you're done. The book is gone. I can't answer your language question, as I have only read English books in this app.

Also has any of you recorded an audio demo on Voice Dream Reader? I want to get the most out of it! Yes I worked with the sample book provided, but among the questions aside from the browsing/downloading of books mentioned above
1-Some way to override Voice Dream's automatic detection, allowing one to manually set the book's reading voice to the correct language? Vecause the sample book is in Spanish, but Voice Dream reads it in English. And yes I've got Voice Dream Reader st of to for now while find a Spanish voice I like, to when encounterring Spanish texts, to use VO's default voice, and for English, to use the provided Heather voice, thus to discard the not having the Spanish voice.
2-Lastly for those books grabbed from our Dropbox (yes I too set up Dropbox with Voice Dream), if no Internet is available, can one continue reading the book within Voice Dream?
3-And finally (I just thought of it), how does one delete books off Voice Dream, taking into account Apple's inability to interact with iOS's file system?
Thanks in advance for any useful tips and tricks as well as resolving the above questions.

RE: videos on an iPhone 6

2015-12-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Joseph,

You don’t use iTunes to get photos off an iPhone, you only use iTunes if you
want to sync photos from your computer to your iPhone. If all you want to do is
copy a photo from your iPhone to the computer you just go to “Computer” with
Windows+E, find the iPhone in your list of drives, browse to the photos folder
which of course will be the only one since you can’t browse to any folders such
as music etc. this way and you can then see all the photos and videos on the
iPhone and use regular Windows copy and paste commands.

Sieghard

Friday, and let's see if that works. As for the other op soon, he will need to

Hi Eva,

Hard to say what the problem is, but you should definitely be able to bypass
the offer for the Amazon Visa which, if approved, gives you an instant $20 or
$25 gift card/discount you can use to buy an item. I can’t unfortunately
reproduce this since my Amazon account is setup with my default shipping
address and my Amazon Visa card as default payment method so all I have to do
is click “next” a few times and any order I place is done.

What is the link to the keyboard you are trying to buy, I am just curious
because I can’t see anybody selling a genuine Apple Wireless keyboard for $25
unless maybe it’s the old one which Apple has discontinued.

On my 5s the mute button is a button you slide back & forth, you cannot hold it
down. So I’m still totally lost on how to put someone on hold while you take a
2nd call.

Hello, yes I can do this. I meant collars. And I also made mute button. So when
I was essentially trying to say, if you will hold down the hold/mute button
that will put all the callers on I hope this clarifies everything and sorry for
the miss dictation email. hold.

  Hi Joseph,

This is useful, but I have a hard time to understand some of what you say
since it appears you used SIRI without proof-reading afterwards. I get “colors”
are probably supposed to be “callers”, but what do you mean by the following:

“What I call beep saying “
“want you look at the calendar of eight”
  “slashing the button”

Could you rephrase some of this so we can all get the full meaning?

Hello Michelle, this is how I'm only do that. What I call beep saying, I
normally hit the hold and accept button. Then if I want to navigate between the
two, I use the swap button. I also just recently learned, that if you want.1
color on hold or both colors on hold, want you look at the calendar of eight or
something of that nature, you can simply do this by holding down the mute
button. The swap button, slashing the buttons, Can be found after you hide the
keypad. I Hope this helps and if you need any more assistance, feel free to
reach out.

RE: Helping my Sighted Mom with her iPhone

2015-12-30 Thread Rob
I heard this recently on a podcast somewhere. In many cases when VoiceOver is
not on, the icon to open an app etc is just an image or picture. There is no
text.
If you want to show a sighted person what app or button you are ready to press,
you might want to go into the settings for VoiceOver and turn on "Large
Cursor". In iOS 8.4, this is the last item in the VoiceOver settings. The
podcast said that when "Large Cursor" is on, a line Is drawn around the icon
image.

Subject: Helping my Sighted Mom with her iPhone

Thanks, as Always,
Dani

IPAD Locked

2015-12-30 Thread Hicks Steven (ROYAL CORNWALL HOSPITALS NHS TRUST)
