Really need major help with 5S

2016-06-09 Thread Terri Stimmel

Hello everyone,

First of all, this may be a bit long. I apologize for that. I just want
to give as much detail, as possible. I am really hoping that someone
knows what is up.

Ok, first off, I realized why I could not get my phone to play over the
docing station. I had totally forgot that this was an issue, and then it
just clicked in. I have to remove my case, in order for the piece to go
directly in to the phone, I mention this for a reason,.

So anyway, once I figure this out, I decide to play with Spotify. I
muted my phone, so I would not get all the alert noises coming through
the speakers, and interrupting the music.

things were going just fine. we listeneed to one album, and I was about
to switch to another. Well, as I was about to get the other album to
play, I got an alert that I just got a text message.
then all of a sudden, the phone sounded as though it said, oikm, real
low, and then made the sound it would make, if you were plugging it up.

All of a sudden, I realized that my voiceover was off, I asked my
sighted boyfriend, if he could try and help me. He was able to tell me
that the volume was all the way down. It took us a while to get it back
up. I could hear the little clicks it makes, when you are sometimes
trying to turn the phone up,.

we thought it would be best to restart it, so we did. Voiceover was not
on, so I got serie to turn it on. It did, and the phone talked, until I
got it unlocked. then it was as though it was off again. but it was not!

I realized that if i talked to Seriem, and made a call, the phone would
do anything, as long as I was in the call. I also found out that I can
get calls, and voiceover will come on and tell me who is calling, and
let me take the call. Again, the whole time I am on the phone, the
voiceover works fine.

A friend of mine told me that this was an audio bug, and that it happens
to her husband at times,. I do have the latest version of software
installed, and have had no problems.
My friend told me that I needed to do a restore from backup. She told me
I needed to use Itunes to do this.

well I have Itunes on this laptop, but I have never connected this phone
to it. So I went and did this, and I tried to do a restore from backup.
I do not know if I was successful, or not. I am not good at using
Itunes. It does not make sense to me, and I do not think it always gives
enough feedback. but this is just me,.

If the restore to backup did work, it did not fix my phones issue. I
even restarted the phone with my boyfriend's help, to see if that would
make a difference,.

I also called AT I got a really nice ladym, who actually took the
time to try and help me,. She even tried to look up reasons I may have
been having the problem. AWe did discover that a lot of the Voiceover
functions had been shut off,. So we fixed all that.
She even thought at one time it might have been a proximity sensor
issue, So she had me do some testing with that. No luck, of course.

So then she tried to get someone from Apple. We waited 40 minutes
together, and then she left me waiting on my own. I waited about another
20 minutes, But they must have been rather busy. I just could not wait
any longer. I was getting tired, and frustrated. So I ended the call.

Does anyone have any clue as to why my phone is doing this?
If so, is there an easy fix for it?
If so, what do I need to do?
Would someone please tell me the exact steps on how to do a restore from
backup, and how to know if it was successful? Maybe I did this wrong.

I feel I may have to go to the Apple store. I really do not want to have
to do this.

Any help with this crazy mess, would be very much appreciated. I am at a
complete loss! I did not realize just how much I depend on my phone, and
just what all I do with it,. It has only been a few hours, and I miss it
already. LOL!

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I really hope someone can help.

Terri

I'm wondering if you can face time with someone that you might not want

Subject: iPhone 6 Battery Gauge Gone Wacko

Hey all,

The subject line says it all. The battery indicator on my iPhone 6 has been
saying 100% all day long and it finally shut down about half an hour ago
without any warning. I don't know if the battery's shot or if the gauge
somehow needs to be recalibrated. Earlir today I did a hard reset using both
the home and power buttons held down for 6 seconds or so thinking that maybe
the gauge would reset, but it didn't. So what do I do? Should I let it sit
all night and then run it flat tomorrow and observe what the gauge does?
Should I reset all settings? I've never run across this issue before so I'm
in need of some good solid advice on this one. What say you?

Thanks in advance.

Maybe it does work with IE and just didn't explicitly say it does.

Re: Siri

2016-06-09 Thread Chris Chaffin

I will admit that working with Siri can be challenging, and it is true, it does
make a difference how things are said. But with a little practice, once you
find out what works the best, Siri can be very helpful in achieving task
quickly.
For example, when adding an appointment to my calendar, I learned that the
following works the best for me.
I say, schedule, name of appointment,, at, time of appointment, day or date of
appointment.

And I just tried to schedule an appointment at 4:45, and I did not have a
problem. I tried saying both, 4:45, as well as a quarter til five, and Siri
did it both times.

Now, I will agree, Siri could use some improvements, and I do look forward to
see what ios 10 might bring.
The way I look at it, even though Siri is definitely not perfect, I am just
proud to have her assistance to do what she can. I know that with time she
will continue to get better and do more.

Chris

Thank you again, Mark. I had not turn background refresh off. I have not done
so, and I want to put in a plug here for the search box in the settings app. I
don't know how long it would've taken me to actually find that setting. But the
settings search thing did it right away.

Re: How to tell what is using your location services

2016-06-09 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Keith, yes I know they're there are those apps that say always. I just
authorized one, a GPS app I am beta testing. In the explanation for what
"always" means, they say it refers to when the app is running in the
background. So, if the app is closed out of the app switcher, really closed, it
shouldn't be needing services. Or so that explanation implied to me anyway.

You can make a screenshot using home+sleep/wake (lock button,) then use
TapTapSee on that image. If you’re lucky, the sighted person, or bot, or
whatever they use nowadays, will know that you want the captcha code.

RE: recording apps

If they seriously want to find a developer to take this over they might want to
contact Rob from Today in iOS Podcast with their story/circumstances. He has a
lot of listeners including many developers.

Two things about List Recorder.
The $0.99 recorder only records for about 10 seconds as a demo.
List Recorder Full, $7.99 records until you run out of memory if you want.
The development stopped because the developers partner became seriously ill and
the developer has stopped working and is the caregiver now.
If anyone knows a developer who might want to take it over, they would be
interested in talking with them.

Re: Abridged summary of viphone@googlegroups.com - 150 updates in 33 topics

2016-06-09 Thread 'ChalmersAS' via VIPhone
Hello

Sorry, missed this post.

I just bought two bands from Amazon. They were both by Jetech, one was a
leather loop at just under £20 and a Milanese loop for about £12. I haven’t
seen the real Apple bands, but they seem good enough to me. I particularly
like the ease with which one can adjust them during the day as the aged old
paws swell up.

I should say I am notoriously allergic to watch straps and had to be careful
not to wear the original strap that came with my Sports too long. I dont seem
to be having a problem at all with the leather strap. I have yet to wear the
Milanese loop for any prolonged length of time.

I was showing a sighted person the Milanese band today and they said it looked
like a satin ribbon from a distance. Weird, these sighted folks.

Best

Adrienne

RE: [AppleVis Subscription] New Forum Topic: Introducing Greta & Starks, iOS apps to make the cinema accessible to the blind and deaf

2016-06-09 Thread Rick Alfaro
Yes, and the app is all in German as well. I’d love to give it a try but I
don’t speak German. Hopefully we’ll see an English version soon.

Very strange, the link provided for Greta is from the US app store, but the app

Hello from the Team at AppleVis,

This email is to notify you that CEO Greta & Starks Apps has posted a new forum
topic on AppleVis.

Post Title: Introducing Greta & Starks, iOS apps to make the cinema accessible
to the blind and deaf

Greta & Starks are two iOS apps that enable people with sight or hearing loss
to experience fully accessible cinema. Starks also includes foreign language
subtitles for an international audience.

GRETA & STARKS are special apps, as they play the existing audio description
(AD) or subtitles for hard-of-hearing individuals and people with hearing lost
(SDH) at any time, place, or screening - in indoor and outdoor cinemas, at
home, at school etc. – simply, using one’s own smart device. Greta whispers
audio descriptions, and Starks plays subtitles.

The only precondition is that the distributors have engaged our company to make
the films fully accessible. Up until now, we were able to offer access to more
than 113 movies.

RE: Feedly app

2016-06-09 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Mary,

1.
For whatever reason, Firefox cannot access the Feedly.com website--at least,
not on my Windows 7 PC. Internet Explorer, 11, however brings it up just fine.

2.
In iOS, open Safari and browse to the Feedly.com website. After the page is
loaded, simply single-finger, double-tap and hold the Reload button, in order
to request the Desktop version of the site. Once done, you can find the login
button and sign into your account.

Has anybody had luck with the feedly app? I installed it on my iPhone and
opened it, and I'm getting a blank screen. Voiceover isn't seeing anything. I'm
trying to find a way to access feedly, so that I can change my password. I
thought I remembered it. I have been using the Newsify app for a long time via
featly. But when I tried to sign in using an android app that also will access
feedly, I was told it was invalid so I need to get into feedly and tell it I
forgot my password, so I can get a new one. Can't login to their website,
because they just say get the app and give me a link. Any help would be
appreciated. I was really sure I remembered this password, but that android app
is insisting not, so there you go.

RE: How to tell what is using your location services

2016-06-09 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Hi,

I know when some apps ask for permission to location services, they specify,
"Only when app is running," but other apps specify , "Always allow access to
Location Services." Off the top of my head, I can't give any examples other
than perhaps I do recall that the app "Where to" is one of the Always apps.
And some of the Weather Alert apps may be like this, too.

Hello Mary,

You know, you raise an interesting subject that has been in the back of my mind
for quite some time but in the reverse, in my case. When I look at my friends'
phones, I very often see the location service indicator in their status bar
even when, like you, a location based app is not being used.

However, although I use many of the same apps as they, and doubtless countless
others, I never, and I do mean, never, see the location services indicator in
my phone's status bar when those apps are either closed or not tracking my
location.

The only thing that I can contribute to this is that I have disabled the
Background App Refresh service, on my phone.

Often enough to be irritating, I noticed that location services are on, when I
don't have any app open or in the app switcher that has been authorized to use
them, such as a Weather app, the GPS app, etc. I have a lot of apps that are
not authorized to use location services. I have other apps that are
specifically authorized to use location services only when they're open and
being used. And then there are those irritating ones that don't give you that
choice, they say always or never. I don't like that, and I do have a GPS app
and only offers that choice. I'm very careful to close the app out completely
so that it's not running in the background sucking down location service
battery usage but often, particularly in the morning, when I wake up my phone
and take it out of airplane mode, I find that location services are on.
Sometimes, just locking the screen and unlocking it is enough to make the
location services tracking notice go away. But other times, it is not. Once,
the only way I was able to get rid of it was to reboot the phone. I would love
to know why this is happening.

Well, at some point, I must have been able to access Feedly. I have a password

accurately, how do you cause it to let you request a new one?

RE: [AppleVis Subscription] New Forum Topic: Introducing Greta & Starks, iOS apps to make the cinema accessible to the blind and deaf

Very strange, the link provided for Greta is from the US app store, but the app
description is in German. Good for me, I guess, as I am bilingual in Germany
and English, but strange nonetheless.

Yes, the quality of ciri has gone down drastically.
I usually use braille screen input to type my messages.
Ciri needs to get way better.

Re: Siri

2016-06-09 Thread Wayne Merritt
One big problem with Siri which needs to be addressed is it cannot
infrer context. For instance, if I ask Siri if it will rain today, I
get the answer that I wanted. If I then say, "How about tomorrow,"
Siri does not know what I am talking about. I haven't done extensive
testing on this, but there have been times when context has come up in
my chats with Siri. I am gradually using Siri more, though I am still
used to doing things on the phone manually. I think if Siri's ability
to understand context, compound sentences/requests, and other
conversation things that we use everyday were to be improved, then
Siri could equal other tools like Alexa in its usefulness.

Text Grabber & Image to Text

2016-06-09 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi group, 2 things here…

I just reinstalled Image to Text. It doesn’t seem to be working. I try to
email the results to myself and the email cannot be sent. Any ideas?

Also, I’m looking for up to date feedback on Text Grabber before I purchase.
It’s strength seems to be in extracting text from images. This is something I
need pretty frequently. What has been your experiences? I haven’t seen a post
about this app for a while.

Thank you,
Traci

Feedly app

2016-06-09 Thread Mary Otten

Re: recording apps

2016-06-09 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Sieghard,

You make very good points. I bought the app a long time ago and it still works
fine, but I can definitely understand being reluctant to buy it at this point.
Since many of the apps that haven't been updated in a long time still work with
the latest OS, I wouldn't want Apple to remove them automatically, especially
because doing so would mean that people who use Apple's default settings would
lose access to them if they restore from backups.

One thing I like about List Recorder is that it gives you the option to record
in stereo and to record in uncompressed WAV. Does anyone know of another app
that does this and is easy to use?

Best,
Anna

RE: Strange sonos issue

2016-06-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Krister,

At the end of this message is the link for the beta download. This should work,
just make sure you access it from the iOS device you want to install Sonos on.
I would make sure you first delete your current Sonos app and then do this. If
after you install again the Sonos app gives you an "untrusted enterprise
developer" message when you try and open it You have to go to Settings >
General > Device Management and allow access to it.

https://update-beta.sonos.com/software/wubtst/

Good luck,
Sieghard

By default, frequent locations are tracked and stored on your device. You can

How to tell what is using your location services

2016-06-09 Thread Mary Otten

RE: My iPod doc

Try to press the volume up button on your iPhone a number of times when it is
connected to the dock. Also make sure the volume on the dock is turned up.

Subject: My iPod doc

Hello once more,

I am hoping someone on here can help me figure something out. My boyfriend is
terrified of technology. He does not feel he can help me. And my one friend I
see pretty regularly, probably will not understand enough about the situation,
to be of much help.
So you guys are honestly my only hope at the moment.

Ok, as some of you may remember, I have an older IPod doc. So I learned from a
couple of you, what I needed to purchase, in order to make my 5S work with this
docking station. I did get the part purchased, and there were no issues.

2 days later, I set my iPhone up there, and played some audio, for about 2
hours.

Well, that was about a week ago. Tonight I decided to see if I could set it up,
and listen to some live police feeds.
However, nothing would come out of the speakers, and when I sat the phone in
place, I did not hear the chime, as if it were charging.

I had the app for the doc on my phone. It did not seem to be helpful, or very
accessible. So I removed it.

Anyway, I tried to get my boyfriend to help me. He said that it was all lit up,
and set on iPod. But he said it did not really seem if the buttons on the doc
said anything. But we have very little lighting in here. So that was as far as
I got.
I tried Spotify, just because I was feeling hopeful. But of course, I had the
same results.

Does anyone know what the heck could be going on?
Could it have just quit working like that?
It is an IHome doc. It has a radio, and alarms. Which of course I do not need.

If I wanted to replace it, are there models that are more accessible than
others?
And at what kind of price do these run?

Any thoughts, or help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,

RE: What is air-play, and how does it work?

Both audio and video will stream to a third generation Apple TV which is
connected to a TV orhome theatre system with an HDMI cable.

Subject: What is air-play, and how does it work?

Hello everyone,

I was wondering, what is air-play, and how does it work?
Why would you want to use it?

I discovered it earlier tonight, when I was trying to get the IPhone to work
with my IPod doc.

Anyway, it stated that I could use the IPhone audio, which I was already doing.
Or that I could stream it as video, over my Apple TV.
Now if what I am listening to, is just audio, will it still play over my Apple
TV?
I have an IPhone 5S, and a 3rd generation Apple TV.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

Re: Siri

2016-06-09 Thread Keith B.
Sorry about the previous blank message. I usually use Siri either to get
the weather or when I'm on the move and need to schedule an appointment or
send a text. I have noticed a deterioration since IOS 9 came out. For
example, I will attempt to schedule an appointment at 4:45, and Siri will
insist on scheduling it for 4:00. I am trying to be patient, but this is
beginning to be a problem. I usually only do this when I'm on the move, as
stopping to use the Braille or onscreen keyboard is not convenient at those
times. I ope this improves in IOS 10.

Hi,
My memory is very short, so could you please remind me of where i want to go to
uncheck this box? I don’t see the settings for the beta program anywhere, but I
guess it must be in there somewhere.

Re: Siri

2016-06-09 Thread Alan Paganelli
I use Siri to post a message on my facebook time line when I don't need to open
FB. I just say to Siri, post to facebook. She'll ask me what I want to say on
my time line. I'll dictate the text of what I want to say including saying
period at the end of a sentense and use the voice enflection to indicate the
end of the sentence. To many people just dictate with out using voice
enflection and saying period or coma where needed. With a bit of practice, you
be a pro at it in no time.

Re: Strange sonos issue

2016-06-09 Thread Brett

Hi Krista,

I too had the same issue as you are. without being able to update the
controler, I was unable to see the room settings ostion, so I couldn't tweak
equalisers or create sterio pairs as needed. I therefore unticked the box about
agreeing to participate in the beta program. I was asked to update again. Now
all functionality is restored.

besides, the beta looked mainly to be for android users, so I don't think we
are missing out on anything here.

Hope this helps,
Brett.

Cheers Brett.

Re: Siri

2016-06-09 Thread Deidre Muccio
As someone once pointed out many months ago the thing with Siri is that you got
to get the syntax correct meaning it doesn't recognize more natural speech but
there's very certain way you have to ask a question to make it more likely
you'll get the answer you're looking for

Re: What is air-play, and how does it work?

2016-06-09 Thread Christopher Chaltain
AirPlay let's you stream audio and video to an AirPlay capable device
over wifi, such as speakers, Apple TV, a home theater system and so on.
You can read more at https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204289

Or that I could stream it as video, over my Apple TV.
Now if what I am listening to, is just audio, will it still play over my Apple
TV?
I have an IPhone 5S, and a 3rd generation Apple TV.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,

My iPod doc

2016-06-09 Thread Terri Stimmel

Thank you,

Terri
