TEK TALK, MEET FINGERTIPS LABS FOR A DISCUSSION OF ITS UNIQUE O6 PRODUCT
Overview
Fingertips Lab is a Venture-backed San Francisco-based startup who's mission is
to make technology more usable, to more people, in more settings. Their first
product is O6 (www.o6app.com), an entirely new way to stay connected to your
phone without touching or looking at a screen.
O6's technology consists of two parts. The first part is a stylish watch-sized
Tactile, Haptic, and Gesture controller that lets you remotely control any app
on your mobile phone without any visual attention. The second part is mobile
app that turns the stuff you love to read in mobile apps into interactive audio
playlists. O6 seamlessly connects with your iPhone, iPad, or Android phone via
Bluetooth. O6's mobile app supports Twitter, Email,
O6 is not only a nifty Voiceover remote, but also supports many more modes,
such as Media controller, Home automation controller, Haptic Notifications, and
will be continuously refreshed with new functionality over time through over
the air wireless updates. O6's product line includes a set of easily
interchangeable accessories. Accessories include a steering-wheel mount, wrist
band, and a bag or pocket clip.
O6 recently successfully completed a month-long Kickstarter campaign raising
$160k for a goal of $100k. O6's customers also include few of the world's
largest automotive OEMs.

Re: How to stop notifications from being read from the lock screen

2016-07-22 Thread Chris Chaffin
Under the notification settings for Facebook Messenger or any app, you have one
setting to show in the notification center, and one setting to show on the lock
screen.
So if you turn off the setting to show on the lock screen, then notifications
for that app will no longer show on your lock screen, but it will still be
listed in the notification center for you to view it there.

Hope this helps,

Chris

Make sure you include them in Notification Centre and check notification centre
from time to time to see a summary of all the notifications.

If you turn off a notification on the lock screen, how can you actually then
view it? For example, I have turned off Facebook Messenger on the lock screen.
So I will get a vibration when I have a new message; but the message won't
appear on the lock screen or in the notification center. I guess what I'm
asking is: what is the best way to make sure you don't miss any notifications
even if you exclude them from the lock screen?

Re: More Info Needed on Syncing iPhone Contacts with Google was RE: Can anyone tell me how I can makes sure that all my contacts are properly synced between my ICloud and Gmail accounts please?

2016-07-22 Thread Christopher Chaltain
When your using iTunes to sync between your Outlook on your computer and
your iPhone then you're just syncing with the local contacts on your
iPhone. There are a few things you can do.

On your iPhone, you can just make sure the contacts option is checked in
the settings for your Gmail account. This will create a separate address
book on your phone that will be in sync with your Google Contacts. This
will be separate from the local address book on your phone. Through the
contacts app you can use either or both address books, All of your
addresses will be presented in one list, so if you have the same account
in Outlook and Google then you'll see it twice on your iPhone, if you
have both address books checked.

Syncing between your iPhone and Outlook and syncing between your iPhone
and Google will just update their own address books, so you won't be
clobbering anything. The only problem you'll have is that you might have
some duplicate entries.

I hope this makes sense so far.

What you can do, which is what I do, except I don't use Outlook, is just
put all of your contacts in one place, such as Google Contacts. In this
case, you'd have to use something on your PC to synch your Outlook
contacts with Google and then keep them in sync. On your phone then, you
would just stop using the local addresses and just use your Google
Contacts. Like I said, this is what I do, but I use Thunderbird instead
of Outlook and I have a plug in in Thunderbird that syncs my contacts
between Thunderbird and Google Contacts. In this way, I just enter a
contact in one place and it shows up everywhere.

interested in also doing a cloud sync with Google but want to make sure
this isn't going to torpedo my continued syncing on my computer between
Outlook and my iPhone.

The link provided in the history below had excellent details but
mentions that you just need to have a paid Google account. I don't have
a paid Google account but just a free one that I got years ago when
setting up my Gmail account. Will I still be able to set up this sync
between my iPhone and my Google account? As I continue to input new
contacts mainly on my PC in Outlook 2010 and sync them with my iPhone
using iTunes, will they automatically sync with my Google account or
will I have to take some action to continually sync them?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Hi,

I think the volume slider in settings only adjusts the speech rate of the
default voice. This will you can have seporate speed settings for fifferent
voices. I do think that it should be smart enough to adjust the currently
selected voice.

Cheers,

Right, CardDav is a protocol and not an app. It allows you to sync your
contacts between your phone and a contact server that supports CardDav.
The Mail app in IOS already uses CardDav to sync Google Contacts. You
don't need to set up a separate CardDav account. You just need to check
the contacts box when you set up your Gmail account on your iPhone. It
says the following in the URL that was provided earlier:

Under the hood, Apple is using the open standard IMAP, CalDAV, and
CardDAV services to handle syncing Google services;

You shouldn't have to provide any server information. The Mail app will
already know all of that when you set up your Google account. You'll
just need your log in information for Gmail.

Hi all

Thanks for the information I've just looked for CardDav in the App Store and
it's not there. The only one remotely similar is something called All Sync 2.
Any ideas? Has anyone heard of this app?

Gmail is set as your default in your contact settings. In the

synced up by comparing what you see to what you think you should see.

It is an ongoing problem that Apple has not bothered addressing. Just another

Re: How to stop notifications from being read from the lock screen

2016-07-22 Thread Wayne Merritt
All,
You can also go into the Voiceover settings, in
Settings/General/Accessibility/VoiceOver; and toward the bottom of
that screen there is a toggle to turn on/off the reading of
notifications on the lock screen. I have this turned off since I don't
want my notifications spoken for all to hear. I've found that it works
most of the time, but sometimes part of a message will be read before
VoiceOver says, "1:20, 1 notification." One other suggestion: if you
go into the notification settings, and choose Messages, you can set
the number of times that the alert repeats when a new message comes
in. I set mine to not repeat, since I don't want to be alerted twice
for a single message. Also, if you have a group message thread setup,
like I do for people I work with, you would be alerted twice for each
message that received. This gets annoying real quick, especially if
there's more than 5 people who are sending frequent messages to the
group.

Hi,

If you to into settings, general, accessibility, then VoiceOver, then flick
down and look for something that says show notifications in lock screen. You
can turn this off and you will get a sound but not all of the notification.

Hi kimber,

You are probably not going to like this answer, but you need to go into
settings/notification Center for each app for which notifications is enabled
you need to open that up and find the unlock screen button.

Re: How to stop notifications from being read from the lock screen

2016-07-22 Thread Daniel L. Gervais
What I normally do is to make sure Do Not Disturb is turned off and simply
flick the mute switch above the volume up key on the side of the phone. This
way all notifications that you receive, your phone will vibrate, and if you
disable the notifications on lock screen for everyone of your apps, your phone
will not wake up each time.

You can even go into the Accessibility settings and I believe there is a
setting to have your flash on your phone's camera to flash when a notification
comes up.

Hope that helps!

Okay, well that was a pain in the butt.

So let me ask another question. Is there a way for me to get a
vibration when a notification comes in but not have it read aloud.
What I want is to be notified that something just came in but not let
the whole world know my business.

Thanks

RE: Can anyone tell me how I can makes sure that all my contacts are properly synced between my ICloud and Gmail accounts please?

2016-07-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
CardDav is not an app, it's a protocol like IMAP or Exchange Active sync and it
is used for setting up accounts to sync contacts. One reason why I use
Outlook.com which used to be Hotmail is that it uses Exchange Active Sync and
with exchange active sync not only email but also contacts and calendar is
synced.

Hi all

Thanks for the information I've just looked for CardDav in the App Store and
it's not there. The only one remotely similar is something called All Sync 2.
Any ideas? Has anyone heard of this app?

Hi kimber,

You are probably not going to like this answer, but you need to go into
settings/notification Center for each app for which notifications is enabled
you need to open that up and find the unlock screen button.

Re: How to stop notifications from being read from the lock screen

2016-07-22 Thread Daniel L. Gervais
In order to stop notifications from being read, the simplest, but longest way,
is to go into Settings and into Notifications. There you will have the list of
all installed apps. You have to go through everyone of them, well those you
wish to disable on the lock screen, and in the app notification settings
themselves, there is a toggle button for displaying notifications on the lock
screen.

I normally disable this setting for all my applications as having them wake up
your phone each time one comes in also drains your battery a lot faster.

Hope this helps!

I thought I remembered how to do this, but I can't find the setting.
How do I prevent VO from reading my notifications aloud when they
arrive? It's a little disconcerting sometimes and, depending on the
notification, could be a matter of privacy.

Thanks for any help.

Re: Synchronizing contacts

2016-07-22 Thread Daniel L. Gervais
Hello,

You have to go into Settings>iCloud and turn on Contacts. You have to make sure
to do this on all iDevices that you want your contacts to sync to. The same
goes if you want to sync your calendar, photos and other items.

Hope this helps!

In the past, I was able to synchronize my contacts on three IPhones. I
just got an Ipad air 2 but can't remember how to synchronize the
contacts on the Ipad as well. Is it something in Itunes settings, the
Ipad settings, or both?

Thanks for responses.

RE: From the National Braille Press July Newsletter: Deaf-Blind Lawyer Advises Apple on Apps

Thank you Rich for this article.

Advises Apple on Apps

Deaf-Blind Lawyer Advises Apple on Apps

Haben Girma can't see your app's design. She can't hear the sounds it makes or
listen to a voice-over of the text. But she has some notes.

The first deaf-blind person to graduate from Harvard Law, Girma is on a mission
to get more developers to design software with people with disabilities in
mind. An avid iPhone user, she recently decided to go straight to the source.

In June, Girma gave a talk at Apple's Worldwide Developer conference in San
Francisco. She urged the software makers to change how they design their
applications. Not just to be good people, but because it's a smart business
move. Around 15% of the world's population has some type of disability, and
many of them are eager to pay for an app that they can actually use.

Thanks to a combination of voice-over features, a digital braille reader, and
closed captions, Girma is able to use her smartphone constantly. She can send
texts and emails, check social media, read the news and book flights on Kayak.
She even uses the camera to share photos with friends.

"I try to always have a keyboard, braille display, Apple Watch, iPhone and
guide dog with me at all times, but it doesn't always work out," said the
27-year-old.

She favors the built-in Apple apps, which are designed to be as accessible as
possible. But the millions of third-party apps are hit and miss. Often miss.

Apple (AAPL, Tech30) offers developers tools to make apps more accessible to
the blind, deaf or physically disabled. But there's no requirement they use
them. Finding accessible apps is difficult. Apple curates collections of
accessible apps, but Girma says searching is a long process of trial and error.

Developers shouldn't waste their time making separate apps just for the
disabled, says Girma. Instead, they should design their apps with accessibility
in mind from the start. They can do that by including support for voice over,
larger type, captioning, and things like switch controls and braille displays.

Girma was born in the Bay Area to refugee parents. Her mother is from Eritrea,
her dad from Ethiopia. Now she travels around the world speaking and teaching.
She's met with President Obama and tries to go salsa dancing regularly.

Apple has a ton of built-in accessibility features and is adding more to its
operating system updates this fall. iOS 10 will allow anyone with an iPhone or
iPad to use the camera as a magnifier, and there are new display filters for
various kinds of color blindness.

The Apple Watch is adding support for wheelchair users who want to track their
activity. It's also introducing Taptic Time, which can communicate the time
just though vibrations. (Haptics, or small vibrations, are an exciting new
frontier for accessibility.)

But the next step has to be taken by the companies and people designing their
own games, educational tools, and especially social media apps. Girma's
favorite apps are the ones that bring people together, like Facebook (FB,
Tech30), which she uses regularly. Facebook recently added a tool that uses AI
to analyze images and create a text description for people who can't see them.

Girma says the technology is promising, but it's still a far cry from human
written descriptions. She urges more people to add text when they share photos
or videos, which are then read by screen readers.

So the next time you post a photo on Facebook, add an explanation of that
sunset photo or family portrait. Girma would love it.

For you I don't know when it's going to be since you using Google or your

2016-07-22 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via VIPhone
Hi all

Thanks for the information I've just looked for CardDav in the App Store and
it's not there. The only one remotely similar is something called All Sync 2.
Any ideas? Has anyone heard of this app?

Re: Otterbox symmetry case for IPhone 6 s+?

2016-07-22 Thread Lois Butterfield

Hi,

I used one of these for a while. The back is hard plastic. It isn't
smooth, but it does slide around because it is hard, and there is no rubber
there. I bought a silicone pocket to stick to the back to keep it from
sliding.

Other than that, I liked the case. It wasn't thick and bulky like some of
their cases and still protected nicely. There is a nice lip around the
screen to protect, but the screen is not covered.

Hope this helps.

Take care,
Lois

Hi all,

Does anyone have any experience with this case? I am thinking of
purchasing it, but wonder about the texture of the case i.e. does it
have a matte finish? or is the back of the case slippery and smoothe?

Thanks in advance if you have any feedback,

Shermeen

From the National Braille Press July Newsletter: Deaf-Blind Lawyer Advises Apple on Apps

2016-07-22 Thread Richard Turner
Deaf-Blind Lawyer Advises Apple on Apps

Haben Girma can't see your app's design. She can't hear the sounds it makes
or listen to a voice-over of the text. But she has some notes.

The first deaf-blind person to graduate from Harvard Law, Girma is on a
mission to get more developers to design software with people with
disabilities in mind. An avid iPhone user, she recently decided to go
straight to the source.

Thanks to a combination of voice-over features, a digital braille reader,
and closed captions, Girma is able to use her smartphone constantly. She can
send texts and emails, check social media, read the news and book flights on
Kayak. She even uses the camera to share photos with friends.

"I try to always have a keyboard, braille display, Apple Watch, iPhone and
guide dog with me at all times, but it doesn't always work out," said the
27-year-old.

She favors the built-in Apple apps, which are designed to be as accessible
as possible. But the millions of third-party apps are hit and miss. Often
miss.

Apple (AAPL, Tech30) offers developers tools to make apps more accessible to
the blind, deaf or physically disabled. But there's no requirement they use
them. Finding accessible apps is difficult. Apple curates collections of
accessible apps, but Girma says searching is a long process of trial and
error.

Developers shouldn't waste their time making separate apps just for the
disabled, says Girma. Instead, they should design their apps with
accessibility in mind from the start. They can do that by including support
for voice over, larger type, captioning, and things like switch controls and
braille displays.

Girma was born in the Bay Area to refugee parents. Her mother is from
Eritrea, her dad from Ethiopia. Now she travels around the world speaking
and teaching. She's met with President Obama and tries to go salsa dancing
regularly.

Apple has a ton of built-in accessibility features and is adding more to its
operating system updates this fall. iOS 10 will allow anyone with an iPhone
or iPad to use the camera as a magnifier, and there are new display filters
for various kinds of color blindness.

The Apple Watch is adding support for wheelchair users who want to track
their activity. It's also introducing Taptic Time, which can communicate the
time just though vibrations. (Haptics, or small vibrations, are an exciting
new frontier for accessibility.)

But the next step has to be taken by the companies and people designing
their own games, educational tools, and especially social media apps.
Girma's favorite apps are the ones that bring people together, like Facebook
(FB, Tech30), which she uses regularly. Facebook recently added a tool that
uses AI to analyze images and create a text description for people who can't
see them.

Girma says the technology is promising, but it's still a far cry from human
written descriptions. She urges more people to add text when they share
photos or videos, which are then read by screen readers.

So the next time you post a photo on Facebook, add an explanation of that
sunset photo or family portrait. Girma would love it.

Look for BBC World service, it is mixed, but does do global news, in a fairly
unbiassed way, or that is their objective.
But they still have the discussion, documentary, literature/drama and comedy
slots.

Thank you, Gina. It sounds like your favorite and the classical are the way to
go. There are also some other things, like radio Wales, radio Scotland, radio
ulster, and the sports stuff. But I'm sorry to say I am not into soccer, and I
have no idea about cricket. So I think I'll stick to the music, and maybe play
or some news.
Our news media so awful. Maybe yours is better.

Ok BBC radio 1 is more geared to Modern music and tends to have live
bands and stuff on it also the top 40 charts. Radio 2 has modern and
older stuff on it two a mix. Radio 3 is classical and has some drama.
Radio 4 is speech mostly drama documentaries comedy news and other
factual interest. 5Live is news and sport, 5Live sports extra is used
to commentate on live sporting events so 5Live might have a news
program on while extra has full coverage of say test cricket.

Apps to listen to ITV Channel 4 and Channel 5 for iPhone

2016-07-22 Thread John Snowling
Hi Everyone.

I no longer have a TV I haven't had one for the last 11 years. Since I
found out about a change to UK law which occurs in September whereby
you have to have a TV license to watch or listen to Iplayer programs
and catchup I started using both the BBC iPlayer app and the Now tv
app.

Does anyone know if there's an app for ITV Channel 4 and Channel 5?

Cheers.

There is no TV in this iPlayer. Radio only. So no audio described shows.

Re: Can anyone tell me how I can makes sure that all my contacts are properly synced between my ICloud and Gmail accounts please?

2016-07-22 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via VIPhone
This all sounds really good. So is this CardDav something you have to get from
the App Store?, or is it already available on my phone or IPad? Is there any
chance you could e-mail across some full/idiot-proof instructions so I can get
it set up to sync everything to Google Contacts? Also, what would be the
equivalent that I'd need for Android?, as I have an Android tablet too.

Many thanks for all your help with this.

Otterbox symmetry case for IPhone 6 s+?

2016-07-22 Thread Shermeen Khan
Hi all,

Does anyone have any experience with this case? I am thinking of
purchasing it, but wonder about the texture of the case i.e. does it
have a matte finish? or is the back of the case slippery and smoothe?

Thanks in advance if you have any feedback,

Shermeen

Re: Can anyone tell me how I can makes sure that all my contacts are properly synced between my ICloud and Gmail accounts please?

2016-07-22 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Sorry, I didn't read the whole thread closely enough. Using CardDav,
which like I said is now part of the Mail apps Gmail support, will sync
your contacts between your Gmail account on your phone and Google
Contacts in the cloud. It won't sync between iCloud and Google Contacts.
I just keep all of my contacts in Google Contacts and then point all of
my devices to it, IOS, Linux, Android, Windows, and everything is all
synced with Google Contacts. I don't use contacts in iCloud at all.

Re: Bluetooth Keyboard without Quick Nav

2016-07-22 Thread Scott Davert
Hi Kelby.
does your right arrow key work when Quicknav is enabled? You would not
be able to use quicknav when typing in a text field, because the
keyboard thinks you are trying to use the quicknav keys instead. If
you use a Windows screen reader, think of it like browse mode or forms
mode.

Hope this helps,
Scott

Re: Can anyone tell me how I can makes sure that all my contacts are properly synced between my ICloud and Gmail accounts please?

2016-07-22 Thread Christopher Chaltain
The IOS Mail app supports CardDav (note the correct spelling) natively
when setting up a Gmail account. Just make sure Contacts is selected and
it'll be using CardDav. If you want this to be your default, such as
when you're creating a new contact, make sure Gmail is set as your
default in your contact settings. In the contacts app, you can restric
what you see to just your Gmail contacts, so you can use this to help
make sure everything is synced up by comparing what you see to what you
think you should see.

Mary,
I've listened primarily to BBC World Service for news since Short Wave Radio
days and the last several years via TuneIn Radio.
Just the lack of commercials is reason enough, but they actually spend time
on news.
Radio 4 Extra, which can also be found with TuneIn Radio is great fun with
some of the comedy and drama shows.
I've been hoping BBC iPlayer would come to the States in hopes that we can
get access to some of the audio described shows, so I am going to go find it
in the App store.

Thanks for telling us about it.

Look for BBC World service, it is mixed, but does do global news, in a
fairly unbiassed way, or that is their objective.
But they still have the discussion, documentary, literature/drama and comedy

Re: BBC iPlayer has come to the US

2016-07-22 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
Look for BBC World service, it is mixed, but does do global news, in a fairly
unbiassed way, or that is their objective.
But they still have the discussion, documentary, literature/drama and comedy
slots.

Thank you, Gina. It sounds like your favorite and the classical are the way to
go. There are also some other things, like radio
Wales, radio Scotland, radio ulster, and the sports stuff. But I'm sorry to say
I am not into soccer, and I have no idea about
cricket. So I think I'll stick to the music, and maybe play or some news. Our
news media so awful. Maybe yours is better.

We more or less agree, though love the more subtle way you describe these. I
used to listen to the radio4xtra for the comedy hours
from 10pm onward, then put it off before the horror stuff that follows. some
of the comedy can be pretty horrific mind. These are
UK times, so don't know how this would work out on the streaming.

Hello Mary,

Radio 1 is aimed at young people and very noisy. Radio 2 is Easy listening and
more suitable for my generation. Radio 3 is
classical. Radio 4 is mainly talk where you can hear the long running soap the
Archers. The afternoon plays are usually very good.
Radio 4 Extra is old drama and comedy etc. Radio 5 I’m not too sure but I
believe it is a dumbed down and more sporty version of
radio 4. Radio 6 is known as the music station but I’ve never listened.

HTH.

Re: BBC iPlayer has come to the US

2016-07-22 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
Radio1 is current kiddy pop, radio2 is baby-boomer pop, radio3 tend to be
classical, and some purely verbal programming, radio4
is prodominently verbal output, whether serious discussion, down to game
shows, comedy and stories/literature. Not sure about
radio5, think it is a prodominently sport theme, but not one I listened to.
Don't know about the rest, but it is a good enough mix
to find something when another starts to pall.

It's free, of course, and it looks to be fully accessible. For someone in the
UK, could you help a US person who is not familiar
with the various stations. We have radio one, youone extra, radio two, three,
four, five, and six. Do they specialize in different
things? There isn't any identifying information other than the station numbers.

How can I ensure everything is winked onto all my Apple devices, + how can I merge all my contacts?

2016-07-22 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via VIPhone
Hi all

Just wondering if anyone can help me with the following questions.

First, when I updated my IPhone and IPad to the latest software, in both
instances my Mac announced that I'd got purchased items on my devices which
hadn't been transferred to my library, and that I should do so. However, I've
had a complete blank, so could someone please remind me how I ensure that all
my devices (Mac, IPhone and IPad) are winked and that everything's "in the
library"? Any help much appreciated.

Secondly, I'd like to merge all my ICloud and Gmail contacts, as I now have an
android tablet for work purposes, so I'd really rather all my devices (both
Apple and Android) shared the same contacts than have duplicates etc
everywhere. Does anyone know how I can do this? Again, any help much
appreciated.

Many thanks.

Eleanor
