Re: Philips Hue Lighting app

2016-07-31 Thread rdour
Hello,

The app does have issues, but there is very good news. You can get through the
setup process within the app. After that, there's a whole ecosystem of apps for
Philips Hue. I use one called Hue Lights, I feel I get very good control with
that app. Also, Siri can control these lights once configured. Finally, Philips
has a web API that is well documented on their development site. I've used it
with bash scripts extensively.

If you get the lights, share your setup story with us. I've been using them for
years now so I certainly couldn't recall all of the details for that process at
this point. They've been running so smoothly I've had no reason to reset the
system. Even the upgrade from the original base to the base 2.0 with HomeKit
support was smooth.

Thanks,
Ryan Dour

Re: Android tablet accessibility may be better than you think [was "Re: Questions regarding the IPod"]

2016-07-31 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Obviously, not every app in the App Store is going to be replicated in
the Play Store. Accessibility also won't be the same. In some cases you
may find an app you prefer in the Play Store or an Android app might be
more accessible than the corresponding iPhone app. For me, I played
around with a Nexus 7 for a few years, and between that and Jonathan
Mosen's article, I realized that the things I do on the iPhone I can do
on an Android phone, and some things that are important to me but may
not be to other iPhone users, are possible on Android and not on an
Apple device. For this reason, I made the switch to a Samsung S7,
although I still have my own personal iPhone, and I still use an iPhone
for work.

If you're happy with your iPhone then there's no reason to switch, and I
don't think any post in this thread is encouraging that. If you're
curious about Android though, you can do some research to see if the
apps you use on the iPhone will also be present and accessible on
Android. It won't be true across the board, but you'll find it's true
for most of the most popular and common apps.

I believe this thread got started when someone was asking about tablets
and made the gratuitous statement that they told an AT rep that they
wouldn't consider an Android tablet due to their problems with
accessibility. I don't think there needs to be this much time spent on
an IOS list talking about Android, but I do think it's important that
accurate information is presented when talking about other devices. I
don't think this thread was started to convince anyone to leave the
iPhone nor was it started to encourage bashing of Android. Choice is
good and sharing of accurate information is important.

Current Android 7 and TalkBack 5 accessibility user experience matches
iOS 10 VoiceOVEr in most areas and exceeds in other areas.
I'll agree that earlier Android accessibility was sub-optimal and had a
lot to be desired, but I'd encourage screen reader users to try modern
Android TalkBack. You'll be pleasantly surprised, but to be fair it is
difficult to let go of legacy experiences one may have.

However, I am not at all interested in having an android cabinet. I

had an earlier version of a tablet, and I really dislike that as

Your use case must be different from mine. At this point, I can't imagine
moving from an iPhone to android, although I have both. If I had to pick one,
it would be the iPhone, for the mail app, the ease of doing web reading, and my
favorite RSS news reader which I use a lot, and for which I have found no
equivalent on android. Plus voice dream reader. It's so much better on the
iPhone then it is on android. I read a lot of books, and book share is great.
And you can't beat voice dream reader, although it has had some pick ups lately
that I have not been thrilled with. Still, for my use case, iOS is still it. I
enjoy messing around with android. But I'm not ready to make a move to android
as my primary device for the above reasons.

As mentioned it is a Wi-Fi connected thermostat and it has an app. It is like
the Nest thermostat, a piece of hardware and an app to control it, just less
expensive and from a different company. I Have had one of these at home and 2
at my retail business which has separate furnaces on the main floor and first
floor and they've been working perfectly for 3 or 4 years now. I am not saying
that Nest is no good, but just mentioned www.RadioThermostat.com as an

can buy the thermostats at Home Depot for around $100; at least I read this in
some posts from list members who said so.

Re: Recommendations on to do lists apps

2016-07-31 Thread Chris Chaffin

I personally use the ios native reminders app. I use it for both things I need
to get done at home and at work.
It is not necessary, but you can create different list to help you better
organize your task. For example, I have a work list for my task at work, a
bills list to help me manage and keep up when they are due, and my list of task
I need to get done at home.
You can customize them to remind you at a specific time, or at a specific
location. And there is many ways of having them to repeat when you need them
too.
Reminders will remain there until you check the box saying that they have been
completed.

You can also add the reminders app to your today screen so you can quickly
access them.
One other feature I like that I will mention, is that after opening the
reminders app, if you will double tap on scheduled, then you will find your
reminders listed by day, so you can see what reminders are coming up tomorrow,
or next week, or so on.

I have tried a lot of the third party to do apps, and I always come back to the
ios reminders app.
If you have any specific questions, let us know.

Chris

RE: Thermostat confusion.

2016-07-31 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Ari,

You may also want to consider the Wi-Fi thermostat from
www.RadioThermostat.com. They are less expensive than the Nest ones and also
work very well.
As for what a thermostat does, it maintains whatever temperature you set it to
and if you have air conditioning this also means starting your air conditioner
when it gets too hot. Let's say you live in a place that gets pretty hot in the
summer and you have air conditioning, but it also may get cold in the winter
requiring you to heat. If you set your thermostat to 70 Fahrenheit and it is
super hot in the summer, the thermostat will cause your air conditioner to kick
in if it gets a degree or two above 670 degrees, once the temperature in the
house is back down to around 69 or 70 it will turn off. The same happens with
your furnace in the winter. If you set it to 70 degrees and it's only 40
outside, the thermostat maintains the 70 degrees by causing the furnace to
start up if it gets too cold.

Sieghard

Subject: Thermostat confusion.

So, after we move, I'm thinking of getting either one of those thermostats from
talkingthermostats.com or a Nest thermostat. I tried googling this one, but I
don't seem to be getting a proper answer. I don't really understand how
thermostats work. Not mechanically, but practically. What does setting the
temperature of the thermostat to 70 degrees actually mean? And is the answer to
that question different when you're talking about air conditioning versus
heating?

Thanks,
Ari

RE: Recommendations on to do lists apps

2016-07-31 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You can do this with the native Reminders app. You can do individual entries
for various tasks and either ask Reminders to "remind" you or not. You can
also mark these items as completed.
Just mentioning this, I'm sure there are more feature rich apps out there, but
for simple reminders of things to do the Reminders app serves me well. Of
course there is also SIRI integration as in "Remind me to..."

Sieghard

Does anyone have app recommendations 3rd party or native IOS, for to do lists.

For example, say tomorrow you like to accomplish half a dozen tasks.
Notifications would be nice, as well as the ability to cross off the items as

Thanks for the help.

Re: Android tablet accessibility may be better than you think [was "Questions regarding the IPod"]

2016-07-31 Thread Mary Otten
It's definitely a lot better than it used to be. Reading Jonathan's blog
article would be a good place to start in my opinion. It is hard to find truly
unbiased people, because everybody has a bias. They have their own use cases.
They have things that are more important to them. I still say, if you want to
buy a device and just use it without messing with it, iOS still has a definite
advantage. But android accessibility has made lots of strides, less so if you
need braille support and are going to be relying on braille back. On the other
hand, the cost of Apple products is quite high and out of the reach of many
people. So the fact that android accessibility is improving, and the fact that
you can get a good android device for less than the cost of a comparable iPhone
is a good thing.

Current Android 7 and TalkBack 5 accessibility user experience matches iOS
10 VoiceOVEr in most areas and exceeds in other areas.
I'll agree that earlier Android accessibility was sub-optimal and had a
lot to be desired, but I'd encourage screen reader users to try modern
Android TalkBack. You'll be pleasantly surprised, but to be fair it is
difficult to let go of legacy experiences one may have.

RE: the u-verse apps

2016-07-31 Thread pattigj1206
This is great, thank you so much, Paul.

I had no idea this was possible. I had to turn it off on the menus because a
bunch of channels had no sound, some that never did that before and were my
favorites but it appears that is what happens with no description or Spanish,
so I had to turn it all off and go without description

So I am thrilled I can get it back when I want it, but yes Monica is right,
Uverse needs to get with it and get accessible boxes.

I’ve ben preaching that sermon to them since I got them, I did the same with
Time Warner and I’ll continue to nag till it happens, grin.

Thermostat confusion.

2016-07-31 Thread englishrider91
So, after we move, I'm thinking of getting either one of those thermostats from
talkingthermostats.com or a Nest thermostat. I tried googling this one, but I
don't seem to be getting a proper answer. I don't really understand how
thermostats work. Not mechanically, but practically. What does setting the
temperature of the thermostat to 70 degrees actually mean? And is the answer to
that question different when you're talking about air conditioning versus
heating?

Thanks,
Ari

Re: the u-verse apps

Hi, the on demand stuff works well for me most of the time.

I find the At Uverse app to be very accessible. I can view, schedule and
delete recordings. Watching live tv is also really easy. Haven't played with
the on demand stuff, but given the layout of everything else I would think that
it would work well.

Re: the u-verse apps

2016-07-31 Thread Monica Jones
Hi Larry, I use both the Easy Remote app and the main UVerse app. The latter
has some minor issues but is mostly accessible. For instance, if I want to
search for a show on a specific day, sometimes I have a little problem finding
the button to do this and just small problems with the pickers. However, this
isn’t predictable. I ight go in there this afternoon and it work fine. I say
that to say that this might not be accessibility; it could be a slight bug in
the app, IOS, or VO; I’m just not sure. Give them a whirl; in my opinion, they
are worth it. I think what UVerse has tried to do is wonderful, but I think
they need accessibility in their boxes like Comcast. There are some folks who
don’t have or want an IOS or Android phone. Lol, yeh, I really do know some.
But some want it and just think they can’t afford it.

The voice over hint says, “start a new conversation, or explore public

Now the public conversation button seems to be gone.I no longer see

Am I the only one that’s experiencing these bugs?

And what about upgradability? Not all Android devices support or have the
latest versions and not all can support them which means that we have even more
special questions to ask the dealers who probably won’t know because they are
in big chains and they only sell, they do not know a thing about what they sell
and definitely no blindness specific stuff. At least that’s the way in Sweden
now.

RE: A new person that got the KNFBf reader

2016-07-31 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
As Richard said, there are several stands, but I would try and learn also to
use it free-hand since you may be in situations where it is handy to use KNFB
Reader and you may not have access to a stand. As with everything it is a
matter of practicing and getting a "feel" for how high you have to hold the
phone etc. For a regular page you don't have to go higher than a foot (approx..
as high as a 8.5x11 sheet is long). It also may help if you could practice a
bit with a sighted person so they can correct you until you have more
experience. The feedback the app provides is great, but it is not as good as
what a sighted person can give you. I always start out by putting my phone on
ttop of what I want to scan so that the camera is approx. in the middle of the
page. Of course this means on a regular page the phone has to be in the bottom
left quarter oof the page since thee phone's camera is at the top right of the
phone if you face the touch screen (it is just around the back of the phone
from where the power button is and a bit higher towards the top of the phone).
If you are scanning a single page it may help you a bit if you lightly fold the
page in half both ways, where the folds meet is exactly the middle of the page,
line up the top right corner of your phone at that spot and then try to lift it
straight away from the page.

Sieghard

Simon! If voice over says "no text visible", it is dollars to doughnuts that
simply turning the page over will solve that.
As for the advice about turning the page so many degrees clockwise or anti, I
ignore that because, from what I can make out, the camera will compensate for
that on its own.

Hi Simon,

If you double tap on the field of view report button it will tell you
information about how many edges of the page KNFB Reader can see and how skewed
your phone is compared to the text. This will be provided in how many degrees
off you are either clockwise or counterclockwise. Sorry, but I am running the
Ios 10 Public beta and KNFB Reader currently doesn't work with that so I can't
give you examples as to what specific wording is used.
There is also an option to turn on tilt guidance and if you have it on your
phone will vibrate if you are not holding it flat. You can try/practice this by
putting the phone on a level table. It should not vibrate. Now pick up your
phone and try to keep it level/flat. If as you lift it up it starts to vibrate
you know that you are not holding it flat any more. You can then try to
compensate and see if you can hold it so it stops vibrating.

Sieghard

Current Android 7 and TalkBack 5 accessibility user experience matches iOS 10
VoiceOVEr in most areas and exceeds in other areas.
I'll agree that earlier Android accessibility was sub-optimal and had a lot to
be desired, but I'd encourage screen reader users to try modern Android
TalkBack. You'll be pleasantly surprised, but to be fair it is difficult to let
go of legacy experiences one may have.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi Simon,

If you double tap on the field of view report button it will tell you
information about how many
edges of the page KNFB Reader can see and how skewed your phone is compared
to the text. This will
be provided in how many degrees off you are either clockwise or
counterclockwise. Sorry, but I am
running the Ios 10 Public beta and KNFB Reader currently doesn't work with
that so I can't give you

examples as to what specific wording is used.
There is also an option to turn on tilt guidance and if you have it on your
phone will vibrate if
you are not holding it flat. You can try/practice this by putting the phone
on a level table. It
should not vibrate. Now pick up your phone and try to keep it level/flat. If
as you lift it up it
starts to vibrate you know that you are not holding it flat any more. You
can then try to compensate

and see if you can hold it so it stops vibrating.

Sieghard
