Because Apple take forever to fix bugs--even when we report them in the
beta period. Is that not what the beta testing period is for?

Re: Changing Voiceover Output To Bluetooth on IOS 10?

You might look at the new audio settings in General / Accessibility / Audio,
and make sure the “Speech Channels” for both left and right are selected. I
could picture if neither one was selected, or if you had one of those bluetooth
headsets which gives you only one channel of audio (and that channel wasn’t
selected), then you’d perhaps not hear anything.

There is a known issue with this new capability where some people have to turn
each channel off and then back on to get things working correctly (I was one
such person; at first, in my stereo bluetooth headset VoiceOver was only coming
through on one channel until I did this).

I also tried

1. Restart the Voiceover
2. Reboot the phone
3. Forget the headset from the Bluetooth setting and repair
4. Reset the network settings and repeat step 3
None of them fixed the issue.
I just sent an email to apple accessibility. I'll report back.

  Richard, thanks for the reply.

Mine is also set to automatic for call audio routing.

For audio setting under Voiceover, I have

  Use sound effects: on

  Audio Ducking: on

Auto Select Speaker in Call: On

During call and using siri, everything goes to the Bluetooth headset.

However, Voiceover output won't go to the Bluetooth when I'm not on a call or
not using Siri.

The same bluetooth headset worked perfectly on IOS 9.

Any other thing I should check?

I have mine set to automatic.

The other choices are Bluetooth and speaker.

Also, check the audio setting within the VoiceOver settings. Some
combination of those may be the issue.

Hi,

Since updating to IOS 10, I'm having a problem using a Bluetooth headset
with Voiceover.
ON IOS9, every time the headset is connected, the Voiceover output always
went through the headset.
However, on IOS10, most of the time, Voiceover stays on the Phone speaker
after the Bluetooth is connected. Once in a while it will go to the headset,
but it's very rare.
Phone call and Siri always go through the headset though. When Siri is done
speaking, Voiceover will go back to Phone speaker.
Does anyone have suggestion how I can fix this?
I updated to 10.0.2, and it's the same.
Thanks!

When I looked at Battery Life usage statistics just now, I noticed that Siri
was said to be 44 minutes on screen within the last 24 hours, which took up
an astonishing 33% of the battery used. I wonder what they mean by Siri 44
minutes on screen. When is Siri on screen except maybe now when I'm
dictating or when I ask it a questionor does the dictation still count for
mail usage, since I am using the Mail program. I guess I'm trying to figure
out what they mean by Siri on screen. I certainly have not use the regular
Siri functionality for anything approaching 44 minutes. And I doubt, even if
you take into account all of the dictations, that I have used that for 44
minutes during the past 24 hours. I'm still having much too rapid battery
drain, and I'm trying to figure out why.

RE: otterbox case and iphone 7

2016-09-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I had it for some time so I don't remember exactly what model it is, but I know
it is one which has one of the wood veneer finishes.
It is quite easy to get the phone in and out and it covers volume up/down and
power completely (you press them through the case and you do have to press a
bit harder than without).
The mute switch is not covered (it has a cut out and you have to use your
fingernail to get in there and flip it, also the headphone jack and lightning
ports are not covered.
Anyhow, even the iPhone 6S/6S Plus are extremely dust resistant, it's not
something I worry about and I even bring my phone into my woodworking shop.
The case I think was around $55 or $60 Canadian, but of course that doesn't
mean much at times.

Exactly the same ratings I saw here on the Canadian store where it is listed at
$39.95, finally a price that is actually a deal since currently $34.95 US
translates to approx. $46 or $47 Canadian.
I might order this to give it a try, if I do I'll post a review. I guess this
should be covered by Apple's 30-day return policy.
Just checked it on Amazon.ca where it is available for $45.00 Canadian with
free shipping. Here it has a rating of 3.0 out of 5 with 4 reviews. However, 2
of them are 1 Star with a bit of an explanation, 2 were 5 Star where one said
"Best belt clip I ever had" and the other 5 Star was simply "Great". I guess we
all know that reviews have to be taken with a pound of salt or 3. I'll see if
Apple offers free shipping and I may give it a try.

That concept is interesting.
The clip is $34.95 in the US and 29.95 in the UK.
In the US store, the ratings were split evenly between 2 and 3 stars out of 5.
The main criticism seemed to be that people with very physically active jobs
didn’t think it held the phone very well.

Still might be worth checking out.

I have a shoulder bag custom made by my wife, so I don’t have to clip it on my
belt or put it in a pocket. Keeps it handy, though the front is covered so I
have to take it out to access the screen.

I don't know about Otterbox specifically but the iPhone 7 rear camera is in a

Sonos App causing significant battery drain, anyone else experiencing this?

2016-09-26 Thread Robin Frost
Hi Everyone,Subject line pretty much says it all but here are more details.
when this problem first manifested I was using an iPhone 6SPlus running IOS10
now I’ve moved to an iPhone7Plus and the problem persists even after clean
reinstalls of the app.
Simply put if the Sonos app is left running in app switcher battery usage and
standby time increase at the same rate even when the phone is locked. When it
is taken out of the app switcher and the phone is locked standby increases
while usage stays static while device is locked as it ought to.
I have an open ticket with this report having been reported to Sonos with
accompanying diagnostics submitted as per their request. I was just curious if
anyone else had seen such behavior.
Thanks for all insights shared.

  Hi Kevin,

I use the WooPower exactly as you are describing. I also wear hearing aids.
the volume should be fine if you don't have a hearing loss.

I don't know if I am doing something wrong. Since updating to IOS 10, the
volume is much lower on the WooPower.

Good luck with your new dog.

  Hi Chip.

I’m hoping to use the GPS software with the Woopower speaker when I’m
following routes with my new dog while in training. I figure the school
wouldn’t be happy with me having something covering my ear. I could use bone
conduction headphones, but they cost more than the Woopower. I can have the
Woopower on my wrist, and when I hear it say something I can move it close to
my ear to hear where I am. This setup may not work as well as I think it will,
so we’ll see what happens.

RE: What I've discovered so far regarding how long the Woopower blue tooth speaker's battery lasts.

2016-09-26 Thread Lynda Ingraham
Hi Chip,

I personally decided to try the WooPower speaker due to my hearing loss. My
hearing aids are bluetooth compatable.Unfortunately, I could be crossing a
street when new information is being spoken. When info is being updated, a
significant amount of environmental sound is blocked out. The WooPower has
enough volume boost that I can hear it much better than my phone when walking.
Wearing the speaker on my wrist also means one less thing to coordinate--guide
dog, support cane, and treat pouch.

Have a nice day,

Lynda

Hi Kevin,

I don’t think I quite understand the usefulness of this speaker; why did you
get it for “gps use”? How does that help, and why would you prefer it to a
bluetooth headset?

Thanks,

Chip

Subject: What I've discovered so far regarding how long the Woopower blue tooth
speaker's battery lasts.

Hi.

If you look at the guide for the Woopower blue tooth wrist speaker, it says the
battery life of the speaker is 48 hours of standby time. I wondered how long
this would be with the battery being used for constant sound, so I put it
through its paces. I started listening to an FM station at about 11:15 in the
morning. I listened to the pitiful Bungles game against the Broncos, and that
ended at about 4:15 in the afternoon. I then switched to listening to the Reds
game on blue tooth, and that lasted about another half hour. I then switched
to the Padres game, and the battery finally gave up the ghost at about 5:15 in
the afternoon. This means that the battery gives about 6 hours of use. I
don’t know if it would be much shorter with blue tooth, since I used it in
radio mode most of the time. In any case, six hours of use isn’t bad, and, in
my case, this should give me a nice day’s worth of use. Besides, I got the
speaker for GPS use, so it won’t be used as much.

Just for your information.

Have a blessed day, and don’t work too hard.

2016-09-26 Thread Lynda Ingraham
Hi Kevin,

I use the WooPower exactly as you are describing. I also wear hearing aids. the
volume should be fine if you don't have a hearing loss.

I don't know if I am doing something wrong. Since updating to IOS 10, the
volume is much lower on the WooPower.

Good luck with your new dog.

Best,

I’m hoping to use the GPS software with the Woopower speaker when I’m following

speaker's battery lasts.

don't know if it would be much shorter with blue tooth, since I used it in
radio mode most of the time. In any case, six hours of use isn't bad, and, in
my case, this should give me a nice day's worth of use. Besides, I got the
speaker for GPS use, so it won't be used as much.

Just for your information.

Have a blessed day, and don't work too hard.

RE: Changing Voiceover Output To Bluetooth on IOS 10?

2016-09-26 Thread Chip Orange
You might look at the new audio settings in General / Accessibility / Audio,
and make sure the “Speech Channels” for both left and right are selected. I
could picture if neither one was selected, or if you had one of those bluetooth
headsets which gives you only one channel of audio (and that channel wasn’t
selected), then you’d perhaps not hear anything.

There is a known issue with this new capability where some people have to turn
each channel off and then back on to get things working correctly (I was one
such person; at first, in my stereo bluetooth headset VoiceOver was only coming
through on one channel until I did this).

Hth,

I also tried

1. Restart the Voiceover
2. Reboot the phone
3. Forget the headset from the Bluetooth setting and repair
4. Reset the network settings and repeat step 3
None of them fixed the issue.
I just sent an email to apple accessibility. I'll report back.

Richard, thanks for the reply.

Mine is also set to automatic for call audio routing.

For audio setting under Voiceover, I have

Use sound effects: on

Audio Ducking: on

Auto Select Speaker in Call: On

During call and using siri, everything goes to the Bluetooth headset.

However, Voiceover output won't go to the Bluetooth when I'm not on a call or
not using Siri.

The same bluetooth headset worked perfectly on IOS 9.

Any other thing I should check?

The other choices are Bluetooth and speaker.

Also, check the audio setting within the VoiceOver settings. Some combination

Hi,

Since updating to IOS 10, I'm having a problem using a Bluetooth headset with
Voiceover.
ON IOS9, every time the headset is connected, the Voiceover output always went
through the headset.
However, on IOS10, most of the time, Voiceover stays on the Phone speaker after
the Bluetooth is connected. Once in a while it will go to the headset, but it's
very rare.
Phone call and Siri always go through the headset though. When Siri is done
speaking, Voiceover will go back to Phone speaker.
Does anyone have suggestion how I can fix this?
I updated to 10.0.2, and it's the same.
Thanks!

Facebook Accessability

2016-09-26 Thread Lee Jones
Dear List, this is probably a stupid question, so forgive me. I recently
downloaded the facebook app onto my phone and created an account. I want to
follow public profiles such as my football team, and have the material populate
my news feed, but I cannot find a follow button anywhere in the app. I do a
search and material comes up, I can like comment and share but not follow. If
the stock facebook is inaccessible, are there any alternative clients people
would recommend?

Many Thanks, Lee

RE: Battery life and Siri

2016-09-26 Thread Rob
When I use Siri, I always press the Home button once after Siri says its last
response. I think Siri may stay active after responding in order to listen for
another request. For me, pressing the Home button returns VoiceOver to the
normal volume and dismisses Siri.

When I looked at Battery Life usage statistics just now, I noticed that Siri
was said to be 44 minutes on screen within the last 24 hours, which took up an
astonishing 33% of the battery used. I wonder what they mean by Siri 44 minutes
on screen. When is Siri on screen except maybe now when I'm dictating or when I
ask it a questionor does the dictation still count for mail usage, since I am
using the Mail program. I guess I'm trying to figure out what they mean by Siri
on screen. I certainly have not use the regular Siri functionality for anything
approaching 44 minutes. And I doubt, even if you take into account all of the
dictations, that I have used that for 44 minutes during the past 24 hours. I'm
still having much too rapid battery drain, and I'm trying to figure out why.

Hi Rebecca,

It's Becky. I hope you and Zeb are doing well. I have the
iPhone 7 and I went from a 5S to the seventh. The seven isn't as
big as the six or 6S. In fact it's just a hair bigger than my
5S. It's just a touch wider and attach taller. Still perfect
for pocket-size. Honestly the real estate is the same as working
with the iPhone 5 or 5S. I like it because it's faster and the
home button is different but in a good way. The battery seems to
keep longer.. And compare to my 16 gig 5S my 128 gig seven can
store much more. Most features seem to work just the way they
worked on the older phones. The seven does not have a headphone
jack but it does have an adapter that hooks into the charging
port. I myself prefer to use bone conduction headphones
(aftershokz) I paired my Focus 40 blue with the seven and it
worked great. There's a new way to edit apps and in that feature
you can also share apps. iCloud back up and restore worked
wonderfully for setting up my seven. I really didn't have to do
much other did enable voiceover type in my Apple ID and password
and I was done. I'm not sure what else you want to know but feel
free to email me if you have any other questions.

Say Siri find office max
Siri responds with I found office max on county road 1 and asked do you want

At the beep to talk I says yes
Siri responds I can get directions or call
At the beep to talk I say "call"

Then siri comes back with who do you want to call.

This happens with anything I try using the scenario above.

This used to work great under ios 9.
Any one have a solution or experiencing the same problem?

Hello All,

I am posting this to both the V iPhone and Mac Visionaries mailing lists.

Back in February of 2016, I posted a question with the subject line of "A
Question About Audio Descriptive Movies in iTunes". I will paste in the
original message, below my signature.

In that message, I wanted to know if movie rentals contain the audio
description track just as the purchased movies do.

More specifically, however, I was commenting on the fact that one of my
favorite movies, "Edge of Tomorrow", starring Tom Cruz, did not appear to
have the audio description track, available in theaters, included in its
iTunes rental download package. A short time later, a friend of mine
actually purchased the movie and confirmed that it, also, did not contain
the audio description track. In all fairness, however, nowhere in the movie
description did iTunes claim that the movie had an audio description track.

Okay, a short time after confirming that "Edge of Tomorrow" did not include
audio description, I sent an email via the iTunes movie portal, requesting
that the track be added to this particular title. I made it very clear that
such a track existed as I personally enjoyed it in the theater. If memory
serves, I received some kind of reply from Apple, back in February stating
that they had received my request and would look into it. To be honest, I
did not take them very seriously as their reply felt very much like a boiler
plate, (smile).

Well, last night, as I was cleaning up my Wish List, on my 4th generation
Apple TV, I decided to take one more look at the information for "Edge of
Tomorrow", before removing it from my list, permanently.

I was stunned and delighted to see that, as part of the description, the
letters A D had been added. I was not certain that A D meant audio
description available, as many newer films are more explicit in this area
but, taking a chance, I decided to rent the movie.

You guessed it, the audio description track was included in the download.
What a wonderful thing.

From now on, if I discover that a movie, for which I am certain contains an

audio described track, as published in a commercial theater, is not included
in an iTunes movie offering, I will request that the track be added to the
download. You may want to do the same.

By the way, I enjoyed watching the movie, with the audio description track,
even more at home than I did in the theater as I (1) could see the video
much more clearly and (2) could control the playback. Be that as it may,
the social aspect of enjoying a movie with friends, in a theater, does add
enormous value to the movie-watching experience that cannot be dismissed.

Mark

Original Post, Dated February 24, 2016:

Subject: A Question About Audio Descriptive Movies in iTunes

Hello All,

I am posting this question to both the V iPhone and Mac Visionaries mailing
list.

My primary question:
Is the audio description track included when renting a movie from iTunes? or
must one purchase the movie in order to receive the audio description track.

My secondary question:
If a movie debuted with an audio description track in the theater, does it
follow that the movie will include that track in the iTunes store version of
the movie?

Here's my situation:
Last summer I saw the movie entitled "Edge of Tomorrow", in the theater,
complete with audio description. To me, it was a fabulous movie. Just so
you know, the film is now marketed and sold under the title, "Live die
Repeat".

A couple of days ago, a sighted friend of mine rented Live die Repeat, from
the iTunes Store. She watched it on her iPad. Even though many titles, in
the iTunes Store, are not listed as having audio description, I was hoping
that, like so many others, given that the film was released with audio
description in the theater, the track would be included on the download.

According to her, she could not hear any audio description despite having
the settings on her iPad configured correctly.

I should probably add that, to my dismay, I discovered that the DVD copy of
this title, I purchased when it was first made available, did not include
the audio description track, either.

I would so much like to enjoy this movie again but I fear, that, unless I
can locate a version that includes the audio description track, I will not
be able to relive the experience of "Edge of Tomorrow".

All replies most welcomed.

Mark

a new place. Yesterday when I was trying to add a private residence, it wanted
me to pick a secondary category. Then it took me right back to the beginning.
I’m gonna ask them about this.

also, you can rewind and fast forward with the earphones.
Triple click the play button on your earphones to rewind and double click it to
fast forward. It will move according to your navigation settings in VDR.
I just tested it to make sure.

Hello James,
I would check with the manufacturer's website to see if there may be
an update that might remedy this issue. I would also try to unpair the
headset and connect it again to see if the issue might be resolved.
You could also try to search this headset model and see if others
might be having issues with it and iOS for something such as listening
to music for example. In my mind, this would be equivalent to
VoiceOver going through the headset.
I hope this helps

However, on IOS10, most of the time, Voiceover stays on the Phone speaker
after the Bluetooth is connected. Once in a while it will go to the
headset, but it's very rare.
Phone call and Siri always go through the headset though. When Siri is

Does anyone have suggestion how I can fix this?
I updated to 10.0.2, and it's the same.

Robin,

I can't answer your question but I'd kindly ask you to please not reply to an
existing message and then delete the subject and message body as if you were
starting a new thread. This is called thread hijacking and though it might
appear to you as if you've started a new post, there are hidden links to the
previous thread that ties your new subject post to it. However, those of us who
read this list by thread will see your subject but the other five messages in
the thread will be about the subject you hijacked.

I noticed that you hijacked two different threads and wanted to explain this so
you could avoid it in the future.

To start a new thread, you need to create a brand new message as opposed to
replying to an existing one and deleting its content.

Thanks.

entered a phone number in my phone, but there is a second entry in Contacts

I don’t even get to any messaging apps when I try that.

As the subject says, how do I do this? I'm totally stumped by the Messages app
store" How the heck do I use it? It's confusing, and I think some stuff in
there isn't labeled. Seems like Apple dropped the ball on this one a bit. I've
heard that the pack for the new Mario game is accessible, as are the packs from
Icon Factory, the developers of Twitterrific. I'd really like to try stickers,
but I just can't figure things out. If anyone could give me instructions,
that'd be awesome!

Thanks,

Re: Help! Forgot Encrypted iTunes iPhone Backup Password

2016-09-26 Thread Monica Jones
Nope, Charles, you are stuck with making a new encrypted password. The same
thing happened to me; it’s what I had to do. I gave it a good, secure password
that I figured I would remember but it taught me not to count on my memory for
that.
Oh, it wouldn’t let me do another encrypted one; it would only let me create a
regular backup. It could be I just didn’t know how.

Hello everyone, I am looking for any assistance you all can provide for

help.

Thank you in advance.

Re: upgrading

2016-09-26 Thread Monica Jones
Rebecca, if I remember correctly, there is an AppleVis podcast that compares
the SE to either other sixes, or maybe it was onle one. You might check it
out. Next time I upgrate it will be to the seven if it is smaller than the
sixPlus. Otherwise, I'll keep what I have till they do a seven variety that
is smaller. It may already be smaller; I haven't checked yet. In a way, I
like my big phone because I can spread out my fingers good for typing but
it's not good for fitting in a purse or pocket. I knew it wouldn't fit but I
liked it for the reasons I stated. Now it's a hendrance.

Hi Rebecca,

Re: upgrading

2016-09-26 Thread Alan Lemly
Rebecca,

Others have already discussed the physical differences between the iPhone SE
and the 7 but you should also consider that the SE doesn't support 3D touch and
the 7 does. 3D touch was introduced in September 2015 with the iPhone 6S line
and allows access to additional settings or features by the amount of pressure
pressed on the screen when engaging a particular control. Only Iphone models 6S
and later support 3D touch and apparently Apple has expanded this feature set
with iOS 10. This makes perfect sense because ultimately Apple is about selling
product and folks will have to upgrade their devices to get access to 3D touch.

Something to think about before you upgrade. Personally, I believe you are wise
to get the most robust technology available when you upgrade provided the price
isn't prohibitive.

RE: upgrading

2016-09-26 Thread Rose Combs
Lucky, I did the 4s to 6 two years ago and it was simple, this time I have a
mess on the SE. I did not really wish to have the 7 an adapter to use
headphones was the main reason, something more to carry or lose or break. I
looked at one, decided I like the SE form factor better but, it may go back I
tried the iCloud restore but a lot of contacts were missing and my 6 backed up
to iCloud daily and I had performed a backup to the computer at 11:40 Saturday
morning but still having some problems with the phone. I wish Apple had not
taken away the ability to restore apps! After all iTunes says if you use
encrypted backup your passwords are saved, not so in my experience.

I thought upgrade should be easy, this one has been bothersome all the way
around. Love the size, the fact that the power button is on the top again, in
fact, but unless it starts working better with all the stuff I had on the 6
which I still have until tomorrow, I may give it back and keep the phone that
works for me with everything just where I want it.

According to the specs at http://www.apple.com/iphone/compare/ the 7 and
7 Plus are the same size as the 6S and 6S Plus and are larger than the SE.

In fact it's just a hair bigger than my 5S. It's just a touch wider and
attach taller. Still perfect for pocket-size. Honestly the real estate
is the same as working with the iPhone 5 or 5S. I like it because it's
faster and the home button is different but in a good way. The battery
seems to keep longer. And compare to my 16 gig 5S my 128 gig seven can
store much more. Most features seem to work just the way they worked on
the older phones. The seven does not have a headphone jack but it does
have an adapter that hooks into the charging port. I myself prefer to
use bone conduction headphones (aftershokz) I paired my Focus 40 blue
with the seven and it worked great. There's a new way to edit apps and
in that feature you can also share apps. iCloud back up and restore
worked wonderfully for setting up my seven. I really didn't have to do
much other did enable voiceover type in my Apple ID and password and I
was done. I'm not sure what else you want to know but feel free to email

Hi.
Yes, it is Netflix I'm having the issue with I've also noticed that
though I have audio description turned on, nothing seems to be
described any more. I know a particular episode has been described
because I've watched it that way before the update but the DVS track
is gone.

Perplexed.
