Android only has real malware issues if one goes outside of the playstore.
Same for any open computer, like Mac or Windows.

2016-12-14 Thread Christopher Chaltain
There's much to agree with here, but the article referred to was from
ZDNet, and that article did refer to another article which actually had
some real information. It wasn't just anecdotal, and it wasn't just some
rant from a guy in his basement with his own blog, which is what I was
expecting.

I would also think that quality of IOS and VoiceOver would be on topic
for this list.

It could also both be true that IOS has some quality issues and Android
has some malware issues. They aren't mutually exclusive!

Like I said, there's a lot to agree with below, such as how easy it
would be for this to go off topic and just turn into bashing and not
productive or constructive at all.

RE: bluetooth earbud recommendations?

2016-12-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Chermeen,

Not sure how much your hubby is worth 

Anyways, if it is in your budget and now that Apple just announced their
earpods will be available to order online as well as at Apple Stores next week,
I would seriously consider them. Of course since nobody has any yet apart from
the few Apple gave out to reviewers earlier nobody has reported how well they
work, but I have a feel that they are going to be very good and will be among
the top choices.

Hi, just resending this message because I'm persistent and possibly annoying.
Please tell me about the bluetooth ear buds you're using and if you like them
or not? and then I'll thank you when my husband is happy with his Christmas
present! :)

RE: Apple has a serious problem with software quality | ZDNet

2016-12-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Pablo and others,

You can find bunches of articles on anything on Google. I could send you 50
links of articles which praise Apple and iOS to high heaven, then I can send
you just as many that are the complete opposite and the same applies to
Google/Android. I can probably even find you some die-hard Blackberry fans who
are posting that Blackberry is the best ever and both iOS and Android are
complete BS. I don't think we have to get into what is better or if iOS is any
good or anything like that. The point is that this is an iOS list, we are all
here because we use iOS devices due to their very good level of accessibility.
We all know there are bugs and that there always will be bugs. We all know
that Apple with iOS, Mac OS, TVOS and Watch OS don't have an exclusive on them,
Android has them, Windows has them, Google Chrome has them and other software
like Jaws, Office, Adobe, Firefox they all have bugs as do all apps.
This list is and should be about helping each other, answering each others
questions and posting articles about some particularly cool app or accessory.
The list is also about posting about bugs you discover or think you have
discovered, sure you can point out your thoughts that Apple should do more or
that Apple really should have fixed this or that bug already or during the Beta
cycle, but I think these rants which then result in endless one-liners about
how somebody is right or wrong or should go and get an Android phone if they
aren't happy with the iPhone are just getting old, they usually just rephrase
what has already been said a dozen times over. As you know very well yourself
Android isn't all it's made out to be and while you say you totally would have
an Android phone if you could see there are also thousands of ex-Android users
who can see and who love their new iPhones after making the switch. Then of
course there are those "happy" Android users who bought Samsung's new flagship
Note 7 only to be surprised when the smoke hit the fan, if this had happened to
the iPhone 7 Apple would have been crucified and in a much worse way than
Samsung.
Headlines like your ssubject "Apple has a serious problem with software

RE: List of iPhone gestures?

2016-12-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Anthony,

As Anna, Ed and some others have already explained you can do a sort of zigzag
gesture basically draw a letter "Z" with 2 fingers on the screen.
However, it is actually not even necessary to do the left to right, then across
and down to the left and back to the right gesture.
All you have to do is put 2 fingers on the screen close to the left edge of the
phone, move them straigh across to the right side and about half way back to
the left. You can do this basically in a straight line and it will work just
the same. As somebody pointed out, go to Voiceover Settings and intot he
practice area and try it, Voiceover will say "2 finger scrub, escapes the
current context".
The main trick is that when you slide your 2 fingers back from right to left
after doing the left to right slide that you only go back part of the way. It's
actually a fairly easy gesture compared with others like turning the rotor etc.

Regards,
Sieghard

RE: Apple TV’s universal search feature now supports over 50 channels including Apple Music, TBS, & more

2016-12-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Just FYI, when I clicked on the link to look at what was supported in which
countries it is very little if you are not in the US. Australia has 6 services
apart from iTunes movies and TV Shows and that includes Netflix.
Canada and the united Kingdom have an impressive 2 services other than iTunes
and Netflix, they are Hopster and Mubi and I don't even know what these are as
I have never heard about them.
In France and Mexico only iTunes and Netflix are supported, in Germany it is
those two and something called Galileo
Then other than what I have listed above only "Other Countries and Regions" is
mentioned with support for Movies in iTunes.

I was at least somewhat surprised when I read on CBC News this morning that
Amazon is apparently launching Amazon Prime Video here in Canada and just as in
the States it is part of Amazon Prime or it can be purchased separately. Now
maybe an Amazon Prime subscription fianlly is worth it here in Canada.

Regards,
Sieghard

Apple has steadily been gaining new partners to its universal search feature on
the fourth-gen Apple TV since its launch
last fall, and this week the number of compatible channels in the United States
has topped over 50. Several new additions including Apple Music, Animal Planet,
Discovery, TBS, and TNT all now work with search.

Search lets you find movies and TV shows across various apps by asking Siri or
using the Search app. The prior method required digging through each app
individually; universal search doesn’t even require having the channels
installed.

Here’s the full list of search partners in the United States:

Movies and TV shows in iTunes A ABC AMC Animal Planet GO Apple Music Bravo
CBS Comedy Central Cooking Channel Crunchyroll CuriosityStream CW Seed
Discovery GO Disney Channel Disney Jr Disney DIY E! Food Network FOXNOW FXNOW
FYI Hallmark Channel HBO GO HBO NOW HGTV History Hulu Investigation Discovery
GO Lifetime MTV MUBI Nat Geo TV NBC Netflix PBS PBS Kids Science Channel GO
SHOWTIME SHOWTIME Anytime Starz Syfy TBS Telemundo The CW TLC GO TNT Travel
Channel Tribeca Shortlist USA VH1

You can find the full list of search partners across various countries
here.

Re: Tidal music service

2016-12-14 Thread Terje Strømberg
I use an app called Audirvana Plus 2. The price for this app is about $100, but
is worth it. Open up for Tidal in Audirvana preferences. Read user guide to be
more familiar is a good advice. Although it is very easy to use with voice
over. To hit play on a song title with keyboard i needed to make a «one left
mouse click» command on the numeric keyboard. Vo + j to move around and the
first letter in the sidepanel table. The drawback, not good thing, is that
Audirvana do not read artist names in album table. Only in song title tables in
the albbum. It is possible to search for album titles with vo - i i.e. the
object chooser.

The Tidal web browser was pretty good accessible before with the object chooser
vo - i. Don’t now how it is theeese days.

Take care

That is apparently the name of the Google keyboard for iOS. I wonder if anyone
has tried it and whether it works with voiceover. For me, the most interesting
thing about it is that it seemingly includes a number row, without having to
switch like you do with the standard Apple keyboard. That would be nice.

RE: List of iPhone gestures?

2016-12-14 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi Anthony,

I will try and describe it in two different ways.

1. Take two fingers and put them on the screen. Then go to the right
about an inch then go down and back to the left about an inch then go to the
right again. Do this without lifting your two fingers off the screen and do it
fast.

2. 2. Now the second way I am going to try and explain it. If you know
how to make the letter Z then all you do is put two fingers on the screen an
make the letter Z.

I hope this helps.

Mr. Ed

Hi Anthony,

Move two fingers in one direction, then the opposite direction, then the first
again. So right left right, up, down, up, etc.

Apple TV’s universal search feature now supports over 50 channels including Apple Music, TBS, & more

Apple TV’s universal search feature now supports over 50 channels including
Apple Music, TBS, & more
9to5Mac / Zac Hall

Apple has steadily been gaining new partners to its universal search feature on
the fourth-gen Apple TV since its launch last fall, and this week the number of
compatible channels in the United States has topped over 50. Several new
additions including Apple Music, Animal Planet, Discovery, TBS, and TNT all now
work with search.

Search lets you find movies and TV shows across various apps by asking Siri or
using the Search app. The prior method required digging through each app
individually; universal search doesn’t even require having the channels
installed.

Here’s the full list of search partners in the United States:

Movies and TV shows in iTunes A ABC AMC Animal Planet GO Apple Music Bravo
CBS Comedy Central Cooking Channel Crunchyroll CuriosityStream CW Seed
Discovery GO Disney Channel Disney Jr Disney DIY E! Food Network FOXNOW FXNOW
FYI Hallmark Channel HBO GO HBO NOW HGTV History Hulu Investigation Discovery
GO Lifetime MTV MUBI Nat Geo TV NBC Netflix PBS PBS Kids Science Channel GO
SHOWTIME SHOWTIME Anytime Starz Syfy TBS Telemundo The CW TLC GO TNT Travel
Channel Tribeca Shortlist USA VH1

You can find the full list of search partners across various countries here.

RE: battery draining need to reboot

2016-12-14 Thread Chip Orange
I would not expect this problem, as not many people (as Sieghard mentioned) are
reporting this.

I did see this some months back, and it turned out to be an app I newly
installed (Roger). Roger has since fixed their problem which caused them to
drain batteries quickly, but always keep in mind it could be a new app. I'd
especially keep looking at the top status line to see if "location services"
are listed as being on; as everyone knows, they do put a load on batteries, and
you may find some app which is using location which you didn't know about.

OK and now i wonder, if anyone with iPhone 5S have the
battery-draining experience? I'm in the process now of updating mine

RE: Why use a Braille display with the Iphone

2016-12-14 Thread Chip Orange
Hi Terri,

I don't use one, but it so happens a friend of mine just told me today she
recently ordered an Amazon "Echo Dot". It said "Echo Dot", and she thought
that was "Echo" followed by a period (which speech does sometimes says as "dot"
when it thinks it's a number or some unusual context". In otherwords, she
thought she was getting the full-sized Echo for the $35 sale price, but what
came was the mini-sized Echo Dot!

Point being, you can mis-understand with speech (especially when punctuation is
involved).

I've been thinking I would look at the newest APH bluetooth braille display to
hit the market when it was available (I think called the Orbit) because it's
supposed to be quite reasonably priced. I've been a speech user all my life,
but it is sometimes hard to listen in a noisey environment, or when others are
talking to you and you're trying to use your device at the same time.

Hello everyone,

I was just wondering, what are some reasons for wanting to use a Braille
display with your Iphone?

What are the benefits?

What are the disadvantages?

Honestly, I've never understood why you would want to do this. I'm not
trying to offend anyone here who uses one. I've just never seen the point.

But now I am curious. Just to get some hopefully helpful information
about this.

I was wondering, how can you find out which Braille displays will work
with the Iphone?

Thank you,

Terri

Hello,
I left it on 9, primarily for the email reading bug, where
flicking up with 2 fingers reads the entire 9.7 inch screen. I
would otherwise update, but because of this, I choose not to.

2016-12-14 Thread Dave Sheridan
Hi Terri

I can't answer your last question as I only have experience of using the
Braille Note Apex. I think the clear answer for me not only applies to the
iPhone but also to the use of iPad or a laptop. You aren't solely dependent on
speech for accessing what's on the screen, you can read it through braille.
This, of course, is a necessity for a deafblind person. There is a further
reason in that you can write your texts, emails or comments on facebook using a
braille keyboard rather than a keyboard on the screen. No doubt, the cost of
braille displays are very expensive which means you have to give it much
consideration before spending this money but direct access and reading oneself
rather than listening is empowering. I hope that helps.

2016-12-14 Thread Richard Turner
I'll take the easy part of your question first. The manual has information on
all the braille displays that work with the iPhone. Also, if you go to
www.apple.com/accessibility
you can also find that information.
Why questions can be difficult as each person will likely have a slightly
different reason.
The most obvious one is if you are deaf-blind.
Or, if you are a person who absorbs information better by physically reading in
braille rather than listening. Or, if you are a braille reader and are in
situations where you cannot or don't want to have VoiceOver speaking out loud
and do not want to wear earphones.
And so on.
I hope that helps.

Hi. I don't think there's a way to bring that back. Besides, that method of
restarting your phone will eventually corrupt the
springboard. If you want to do a quick restart, simply hold the power and home
buttons for 5 seconds on iPhones that aren't the 7 or
7+ and for the 7 and 7+ hold the power and volume down button for 5 seconds.

crashed something and it had to restart to recover. So
this is a long overdue bug fix made into a feature. Press and hold two
physical buttons for a full reboot now, though it has
changed which two since I did it.
