Messages no longer showing contact names

2018-11-30 Thread R Van Lant
Suddenly the other day, all the message threads on my phone no longer show the
names from my contact list, but rather only show the phone number. After
sending and receiving a text from my husband, his name is showing up now. I
texted my mom, thinking that might trigger it, but now have one message thread
with her name an another older one with just her number. A Friend in my
contacts texted me for the first time and her message also just came up with a
number. I've turned off my phone and checked for any IOS updates, but still no
change. Even when my husband called me the other day, caller ID did not
identify him by name. Anyone seen this before? On a 6S running IOS 12

RE: Instant Pot Smart WiFi Pairing Guide

2018-11-30 Thread Alan Lemly
Actually, the name of the new Instant Pot cooker is the Instant Pot Smart WiFi
6 Quart Electric Pressure Cooker if you look at it on Amazon which seems to
clearly indicate it is a wifi as opposed to a Bluetooth model. It is still on
sale for $90 versus its regular retail price of $149.95. You can find it at
this link:

RE: Instant Pot Smart WiFi Pairing Guide

2018-11-30 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz
SO! Many! Exclamation marks!

The only one being sold is the wifi model. There is no bluetooth version
anymore. Hasn’t been since I think early this year or last. If you bought one
with connectivity, it’s by default the wifi version.

Where did you buy it from that it didn’t say which model it was? Outside of a
private sale perhaps, I’m incredulous that the listing didn’t say what model
instant pot it was anywhere. Be it ultra, wifi, mini, etc. How did you
otherwise know you were buying the one you wanted then?

Re: Using the calendar

Hello to all of you who offered help with the Calendar App.

I really appreciate the help and suggestions. I did purchase
Fantastical. So now it's just getting used to them both. But I am
looking forward to it.

Thank you again for the much needed help.

This is a very interesting thread. This is the second message saying
there are two distinctly different control types--Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. I

I'll be exchanging it for the newer Wi-Fi-connectable model.

the correct app. I hope they have a customer service number that you
can call and order to get some help to find out which button you might
need to press in order to accomplish the pairing.

Re: Unable to pair instant pot wifi smart cooker

2018-11-30 Thread Steve Matzura
If they did it right, they'd do it like the Amazon devices, where the
device sets up an ad-hoc network, the phone finds it, logs into it, and
does its thing. But with my luck, it's probably just as you say,
requiring sighted assistance to set up the Wi-Fi portion on the pot.

view, do the following:

1. Wake your watch.

2. Press the digital crown to go to the screen containing your apps.

3. Force press. To do this press, the screen until you feel a vibration. Force
pressing is often a way to get to additional options in an app.

4. There are two buttons on the screen - Grid View and List View. Double-tap
List View.

Settings is one of the apps. You can also ask Siri to open apps, or choose
recent or favorite apps from the dock, depending on how you configure the dock.
You get to the dock by pressing the side button, the one next to the digital

Again, though, most of the settings are available in the Watch app on your

I hope that helps.

There really isn't though I'm sure they think the app is accessible
since all the elements are labeled. The problem is mainly with
navigation. You just can't move through the options the way you should
be able to while using VO.

I will definitely be emailing their support address and explaining why
I am returning the cooker.

person who responded told me there was a small button on the front of
the pot that needed to be pressed in and held for a few seconds to
activate the initial connection. After I did this (I needed sighted

Sometimes I have to attempt the whole pairingprocess more than once.
With Bluetooth, it helps to be in front of the actual pot -- not
pairing from another room -- and sometimes it also helps to unplug the
Instant Pot and then plug it in again.

Good luck, I hope you get this to work, and I'm also interested to
know if the app seems to be totally accessible, as it was for the
 Bluetooth model.

Ugh, I have that problem all the time, Sieghard! It's so annoying when I say
the name of (what used to be) my local train station, and the name of my
then apartment complex gets inserted instead. They have words in common in
their names--my complex was called Del Norte Place, and the shortened form
of one of the two local train stations is Del Norte. They're both in the
same city, and one is called El Cerrito Plaza station while the other is
called El Cerrito Del Norte station, so you can see why they got shortened
to Plaza and Del Norte. But every time I'd say Del Norte to coordinate with
my husband where we'd be meeting, dictation would enter the name of my
apartment complex, which is totally stupid.

Thanks,
Ari

"You can bring this package to Canada Post when you have time" and SIRI
put "You can take this package to Canada Post Smithers when you have

I have "Canada Post Smithers" as a contact for calling my local post
office and I have seen this before where you say something and it inserts
one of your contact names, I mean I clearly said "Canada Post" and in no
way said the word "Smithers".
Another one went like this, I spoke a number, can't exactly recall the
context, but instead of 122 SIRI actually wrote "one22", I mean what's
with this, this is not even a word and it didn't even put a space between
the word "one" and the "22".

All this as well as if English is your second language.
My wife hates Siri and gave up on using it and dictation but for the most
basic of text. German's her first language and while she's completely
fluent in English, she still has an accent. She's self-conscious of it and
while I'm probably bias, I don't think it's that pronounced. She does have
what I might consider a general "European" accent, but it's not like I
live with the governater or Boris and Natasha either. And even if I did,
so what. You figure dictation would be better at these sort of real world
variables by now.
My German's not good enough to where it would make sense to be swapping
texts back and forth in German (although, it would probably help me to
pick up more stuff), so all our techy communication is in English.
Also the hassle if you're dealing with foreign sounding names. I have to
say "my sister" instead of Magdalena since 9 times out of 10, it'll get
messed up. Thank God I don't ever have to dictate my name. Lopez,
Hernandez, Ramos is fine if you gringo-fy the pronunciation, but good luck
if you have to refer to Horacio Vialpando Monreal for example...
I've sent mistakes of boobs instead of boots. Fuck you instead of thank
you. I'm shitting instead of I'm sitting...
Spell checking can be so tiresome for every little text though. I’m sure
I've let a bunch of their instead of they're, cite sight and site
where/wear go through too. Wouldn't be surprised if some people think I'm
illiterate by now.

Ah technology...

I had a real good chuckle at the dictation mention and how better it is to
talk than type at times.
Of course this would be true if SIRI wasn't so stupid and make so many
mistakes.
I dictate a lot, but I have made it a rule never or at least extremely
rarely will I send a message without going over it word by word because
sometimes especially with a bit of background noise just hearing it read
back can sound like it's OK when it is not.
I find especially often I will say "a" or "him" or "them" and SIRI puts
"the" instead of "a", "them" instead of "him" and so on.
A couple of weeks ago I send a message to my Mom where I was talking about
my niece who wants to get a backpack for Christmas. As some of you know I
own a retail business and sell outdoor and hunting gear and backpacks are
definitely an item we have lots of. Anyways, I dictated the message but
instead of "backpack" SIRI wrote "fuck fuck", sorry for the bad word, but

Re: Unable to pair instant pot wifi smart cooker

2018-11-30 Thread Kimber Gardner
Hi all,

So the bottomline on my adventure with the wifi instant pot is that
it's going back to amazon.

I did finally get it paired -- turns out I had the wrong app. The
weird thing is that the wrong app was very accessible, but the right
app was not so much. I want to be clear. The app is probably usable
with some determination, but I just don't have that much. Not for a
pot anyway.

I've cooked for over three decades without an instant pot and I guess
I will continue to do so.

Thanks again to everyone who tried to help.

If the Wi-Fi model is like the Bluetooth model, you have to press one
 of
 the
buttons on the unit in order for it to become seen by the app. Also,
 there
are two apps, one of which is for the Bluetooth only and the other for
 the
Wi-Fi model only. So you want to make sure you have the correct app. I
 hope
they have a customer service number that you can call and order to get
 some
help to find out which button you might need to press in order to
 accomplish
 the pairing.

2018-11-30 Thread Chris Chaffin

I have tried both Apple Music as well as the unlimited Amazon Music
subscription. They are both good, but I went with the unlimited Amazon Music
because it seems that a few of the artist that I like to listen to was not
available on Apple Music, but was available on Amazon Music. I can not speak
to how accessible it is to purchase music from Amazon Music because I do not
really buy music anymore. I just listen to what I want through my subscription.

Apple Music comes to Amazon Echo smart speakers starting December 17th
 Friday, November 30, 2018
Highlighting growing cooperation between the two companies, Amazon has
announced that Apple Music is coming to Amazon Echo smart speakers
starting December 17th via The Amazon Blog:

Music has always been one of Alexa’s most popular features and today
we’re excited to announce that Apple Music will be available on Echo
devices beginning the week of December 17.

Apple Music subscribers will be able to enjoy Apple Music’s 50 million
songs on Echo devices. Customers will be able to ask Alexa to play their
favorite songs, artists, and albums—or any of the playlists made by Apple
Music’s editors from around the world, covering many activities and
moods. Customers will also be able to ask Alexa to stream expert-made
radio stations centered on popular genres like Hip-Hop, decades like the
80s, and even music from around the world, like K-Pop. Just ask Alexa to
play Beats 1 to hear Apple Music’s global livestream including in-depth
artist interviews— all completely ad-free. Simply enable the Apple Music
skill in the Alexa app and link your account to start listening.

“Music is one of the most popular features on Alexa—since we launched
Alexa four years ago, customers are listening to more music in their
homes than ever before,” said Dave Limp, senior vice president, Amazon
Devices. “We are committed to offering great music providers to our
customers and since launching the Music Skill API to developers just last
month, we’ve expanded the music selection on Alexa to include even more
top tier services. We’re thrilled to bring Apple Music – one of the most
popular music services in the US – to Echo customers this holiday.”

Customers tell us that the simplicity and ease of asking Alexa for the
content they want to hear has brought more music into their homes.
Customers ask Alexa to play all kinds of music in many different
languages. They stream tens of millions of hours of radio per month and
have set tens of millions of music alarms since the feature launched less
 than a year ago.

Fun fact: Top country is the most requested music to wake up to.

Hi, i am an amazon prime customer, and i also subscribe to amazon music
unlimited.

I love it, and use it with my echo device.

You don't have to be a prime customer, to subscribe, to music unlimited, it
just works out a bit cheaper if you are.

I don't have either Amazon music or Apple Music at this time but have
thought about subscribing to one but not both. Because I am a Prime
member, Amazon is less expensive but I have found that purchasing
music from them is really difficult these days and for that reason I
am more reluctant to use them. So, having said all that, do people
overall have any preference between these services?

Apple Music comes to Amazon Echo smart speakers starting December 17th |
MacDailyNewsMichael, I recently got an echo dot which I use with alexa. I get
a month free trial and then the monthly subscription would be around $4.00.
Hope that helps.

Hi there:

I just received this email concerning Apple Music on the Amazon Alexa device. I
am wondering if this is going to be permanent, or just for a short period. I am
an able subscriber, and have an apple account as I am an iPhone 7 Plus user.
Also, is this a free feature, or is there a monthly subscription fee.

Thanks folks!

Apple Music comes to Amazon Echo smart speakers starting December 17th
Friday, November 30, 2018

Highlighting growing cooperation between the two companies, Amazon has
announced that Apple Music is coming to Amazon Echo smart speakers starting
December 17th via The Amazon Blog:

Music has always been one of Alexa’s most popular features and today we’re
excited to announce that Apple Music will be available on Echo devices
beginning the week of December 17.

Apple Music subscribers will be able to enjoy Apple Music’s 50 million songs on
Echo devices. Customers will be able to ask Alexa to play their favorite songs,
artists, and albums—or any of the playlists made by Apple Music’s editors from
around the world, covering many activities and moods. Customers will also be
able to ask Alexa to stream expert-made radio stations centered on popular
genres like Hip-Hop, decades like the 80s, and even music from around the
world, like K-Pop. Just ask Alexa to play Beats 1 to hear Apple Music’s global
livestream including in-depth artist interviews— all completely ad-free. Simply
enable the Apple Music skill in the Alexa app and link your account to start
listening.

“Music is one of the most popular features on Alexa—since we launched Alexa
four years ago, customers are listening to more music in their homes than ever
before,” said Dave Limp, senior vice president, Amazon Devices. “We are
committed to offering great music providers to our customers and since
launching the Music Skill API to developers just last month, we’ve expanded the
music selection on Alexa to include even more top tier services. We’re thrilled
to bring Apple Music – one of the most popular music services in the US – to

I don't have either Amazon music or Apple Music at this time but have
thought about subscribing to one but not both. Because I am a Prime
member, Amazon is less expensive but I have found that purchasing
music from them is really difficult these days and for that reason I
am more reluctant to use them. So, having said all that, do people
overall have any preference between these services?

Robert,

Remember that iTunes Match has a minimum bit rate requirement before Match will
upload your files. If it is below 128 KBPS I believe Match won’t upload it.

I am asking this question for a friend. I have been signed up with iTunes match
for several years, so I have no idea how to help him. He does not have a mask.
He does have a Windows PC, and he does have a bunch of stuff in iTunes. He was
trying to sign up for iTunes match and was not successful. So the question: how
to sign up for iTunes match if you are running a Windows PC?

Those with Sonos and Alexa have Apple Music linked with Sonos.

This will be a permanent feature. Now the specific details are still not
clear. I am not sure if it will just be a subscription service like Spotify,
or you will also be able to play your own personal music and the free stations

Re: watch: what is autospeak?

2018-11-30 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
Hello,

Watches had complications long before Apple existed.

On old analogue watches some were able to display more than just the time.
These extra items were known as complications. Perhaps because the more
features on the watch the more complex its workings were, hence the term
complication.

Hello,

Auto Speak determines whether the content of a complication is automatically
read when you wake up your Apple Watch.

Normally on waking up your watch the time is announced. If you enable Auto
Speak for a particular complication its content will be read after the time
is announced.

For example, I have the Activity complication on my watch face. If I enable
auto speak for this complication then I will get the time then Moving 92%,
Exercising 100% Standing 83%.

Re: Unable to pair instant pot wifi smart cooker

2018-11-30 Thread Kimber Gardner
Hi,

Thanks for all the responses. I have reached out to the instant pot
support email and explained my situation. I found out from youtube
about pressing the button on the pot itself, but when I do I get a
message that says app with a blinking wifi indicator. However the
pairing never succeeds. I am standing right in front of the pot when I
do this. Anyway, I'll see what the instant pot folks say about it.

Regarding the app, it does seem very accessible with the exception of
the recipe area. You can access the recipes by moving your finger
around the screen then double tapping the one you are interested in,
but you can't flick through the list of recipes which makes navigating
a bit tricky. Once in the recipe itself things work pretty well and
all ingrediets and instructions are readable.

I'll let everyone know how this all works out.

Thanks again for the responses.

2018-11-30 Thread Michael G McKay

December 17th
 via
The Amazon Blog:

We’re thrilled
to bring Apple Music – one of the most popular music services in the US – to
Echo customers this holiday.”

Customers tell us that the simplicity and ease of asking Alexa for the content
they want to hear has brought more music into their homes. Customers ask Alexa
to play all kinds of music in many different languages. They stream tens of
millions of hours of radio per month and have set tens of millions of music
alarms since the feature launched less than a year ago.

Fun fact: Top country is the most requested music to wake up to.

We’re excited to bring Apple Music to our Alexa customers this holiday season.

Wow, I'm really excited to hear this. I've been struggling over which
music subscription service to keep (I subscribe to both amazon
unlimited and apple music). Admittedly, I was leaning toward unsubbing
from apple music, but didn't because I have so many personal playlists
I just didn't have the time or the inclination to recreate on the
amazon service. Also, I find creating playlists far less intutive on
the amazon platform. So this news makes me very happy.

Re: Unable to pair instant pot wifi smart cooker

2018-11-30 Thread Penny Reeder
Contact the InstantPot company, you can do this through the Help
function in the app, and ask for their help.

I do not have the wifi model, but when I couldn't get the BlueToot
model to pair, I asked the FaceBook Instant Pot group for help. The
person who responded told me there was a small button on the front of
the pot that needed to be pressed in and held for a few seconds to
activate the initial connection. After I did this (I needed sighted
help), the Bluetooth connection worked.

Re: watch: what is autospeak?

2018-11-30 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
Hello,

Auto Speak determines whether the content of a complication is automatically
read when you wake up your Apple Watch.

Normally on waking up your watch the time is announced. If you enable Auto
Speak for a particular complication its content will be read after the time is
announced.

For example, I have the Activity complication on my watch face. If I enable
auto speak for this complication then I will get the time then Moving 92%,
Exercising 100% Standing 83%.

Re: Seeing AI, After A Little MoreThan A Year

2018-11-30 Thread englishrider91
That's so odd, Richard. I find that the document channel often doesn't work for
me, either. I usually get the message, no text, or something like that. It's
strange, too, considering I'm doing the same thing I would be with something
like KNFBReader, and that was fine. It's especially odd, given that the short
text channel works fine--well, as fine as any OCR app ever does on the iPhone.
I find that my hands usually shake after a little bit of holding up the phone.
It's better if I brace my elbows on the table, though, but that doesn't help
when you need to scan something freehand, like when you're out and about.

Thanks,
Ari

2018-11-30 Thread englishrider91
Ugh, I have that problem all the time, Sieghard! It's so annoying when I say
the name of (what used to be) my local train station, and the name of my then
apartment complex gets inserted instead. They have words in common in their
names--my complex was called Del Norte Place, and the shortened form of one of
the two local train stations is Del Norte. They're both in the same city, and
one is called El Cerrito Plaza station while the other is called El Cerrito Del
Norte station, so you can see why they got shortened to Plaza and Del Norte.
But every time I'd say Del Norte to coordinate with my husband where we'd be
meeting, dictation would enter the name of my apartment complex, which is
totally stupid.

Thanks,
Ari

Re: Secret iPhone & iPad Typing Tips: Trackpad Mode and more!, iMore

2018-11-30 Thread englishrider91
Sieghard, I know what you mean about dictation. Sometimes it just gets it so,
so wrong! And I've found lately that dictation has gotten even weirder lately.
What happens is that you'll dictate something, and when it's read back, VO
reads what you dictated, and it's correct. Then, when you go and double-check
the message, just in case, things will be completely screwed up. It's like
dictation does a second pass through your text, and you'll end up with all
sorts of errors--slightly wrong words, completely different words, whole chunks
of your sentence missing, and the last, and worst, only the last word of your
sentence being dictated. Now, I've used an iPhone since September of 2011, so
I'm not a new user by any means, and know how to dictate very well; in fact, it
drives me nuts when people don't dictate punctuation. This worsening behavior
is just awful.

I know what you mean about dictation not getting a certain word right, no
matter how much you say it. My word that it screws up on all the time on one
day was raisin. This happened both when I tried to dictate it and when I tried
asking Siri how to spell it. It kept inputting or giving me the answer of
reason, which was totally frustrating!

Thanks,
Ari

If the Wi-Fi model is like the Bluetooth model, you have to press one of the
buttons on the unit in order for it to become seen by the app. Also, there are
two apps, one of which is for the Bluetooth only and the other for the Wi-Fi
model only. So you want to make sure you have the correct app. I hope they have
a customer service number that you can call and order to get some help to find
out which button you might need to press in order to accomplish the pairing.

Re: A old friend of mine she is in her 80's is seeking for a cell phone with buttens and keys that are spaced apart that she can feel them. she is with telus in Canada any one have any ideas?

2018-11-30 Thread Arlene
Mich, while I'm not from canada and don't know about all the flip phones that
are available there, I went on to the telus web page which is
www.telus.com
The only flip phone that was mentioned on the page was the
alcatel go flip phone.
This phone has the full readout, all the menues talk on the phone. I have this
phone for a t& t here in oklahoma city, oklahoma and it has the marking on the
5. It has a icon radio, so you could listen to local fm radio. It has a browser
in the phone so one can go on the internet.I have another alcatel which is
another model of the acatel flip phone for consumer cellular which is very much
the same as the alcatel go flip phone. The only difference is the phone for
consumer cellular has the numbers in raised print on the number keypad. While
the phone talks all the menues in the phone, so you could type a text message
and type in contacts. The only drawback on the acatel phones are is if you go
to write a text message while you can press the pound key if you need to
capatalize a letter you can press the pound key once and the phone will say
capatalize. I think it's the pound key that brings up the symbals such as the
period, at sign, comma and so on, but it doesn't talk, and if you press the 1
key which on other phones is how you can hear the symbols it doesn't say
anything. So your friend would be able to type in her contacts if that's
something she feels that she could do. If she was into writing text messages
she could write short messages, but it's kind of hard not being able to type
the symbols. also it has email you could set up whcih I haven't tried to set
up. As far as writing text messages the ones I've tried writing, it doesn't
seem to read the message as it does on other flip phones I have. There's a
calculator in the phone, which is accessible. The calendar is very accessible
too. It all depends on how much or less your friend does in operating the
phone, she could do a number of things with the acatel. I couldn't find the
phone number for telus to find out if they had any other flip phones. I
couldn't find it on the telus web page, so maybe I'll do a search for the
number. Of course the other phones they were telling about on the page, where
accessibility is concerned is the smart phones, the s8 and the different
iphones. I always wondered about the flip phones for other countries, but
whenever I've asked no one answered to tell about them, so I guess most people
have smart phones. Hopefully someone knows about the other flip phones that are
available in canada and I'll look into it a bit more to see if I could find the
phone number for telus to find out about other flip phones they have.

Hello all. My friend Anett she is in her 80’s she is in the serch for a new
phone. She says she wants a phone that has phyisickle buttens on it this would
be a cell phone btw. She said that she wants one where the keys are spaced
apart enough that she can feel them and there should be a dot on the five etc.
I drew a blank when she asked me about this since I have not seen a cell phone
with phyisickle buttens in quite some time. She says she wants it to be simple
and easy to use. Her cell carrier is telus. Does any one know of sutch a phone?
Many thanks for any help. Btw she has no sight what so ever. She is blind like

RuggedGear do very robust android devices which have touch screen and real
buttons and built like the proverbial tank. Built to
military/civil eng/security grade. Often include other interesting features
like a massive battery capacity and very powerful LED
torch. But the basic phone and buttons is good to handle. Price not that mad
