The currency channel in Seeing AI is very good.
I did not know if it did non USA currency; so that is good.

Its name is Nantmobile Money Reader, but it is not showing up in the app store.
It still works if you have it.

accessible, compact exercise equipment

2019-07-22 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,

I was wondering, is there any sort of accessible, compact exercise
equipment out there? Something that on't take up too much room, as I
have limited space. Also, something not too expensive. Maybe not anymore
than $200, maybe, $250?

I am particularly interested in finding an accessible elliptical machine.

Thank you,

Terri

Also, if you are only needing US currency, then EyeNote from the bureau of
Engraving works great and will tell you if it is the front or the back of the
bill. And Eyenote it is free.

But, if you need international currencies, this Cash Reader sounds like a good
option.
Money Reader was originally $10 then went free.

Re: Money Reader not in app store

2019-07-22 Thread Richard Turner

you can download it for free for 14 days, then there are several buying options.
I pasted the inApp purchases below, but there is a $17.99 price next to the
app, which I'm guessing would be a one-time purchase. It has 29 languages
listed.
In-App Purchases, Yes, Cash Reader: Bill Identifier,$17.99, Full Version for 14
days,$0.00, Full Version for one month,$0.99, Full Version for one year,$5.99

2019-07-22 Thread Susie Stageberg
I don't think anyone is suggesting that we have to use this service; Mark just
posted the article as a point of interest. And since I did not know such
services existed, I am glad to have this tool in my box should I need it. It
doesn't fit in my life right now, so if it doesn't fit in yours, then just keep
scrolling through e-mail.

And as for blind people hovering over their devices and not talking, observe a
"family" of four sitting in a restaurant, each on a device. I don't suppose
civilization as we know it will be threatened, just altered.

Well, I agree with both Sieghard and Robin, except that I don't think
what Sieghard says is only said about the blind. There are plenty of
discussions about people doing more and more things alone on their own
individual device and not socializing with others which are having all
sorts of impacts on people's socialization and other skills. I'm not
saying this is all negative. I was just listening to a podcast where
someone was saying he can remember how the TV was going to destroy our
social fabric because people were just going to stay in their homes
instead of going out to seak entertainment and socialize. Now he says,
those were actaully the golden days of bringing families together
because now everyone just goes off into their own room with their own
device. This podcast was intended for the genral public and not the
blind, so it isn't true that people only worry about the blind losing
their socialization skills with services like this.

Re: Recommendations needed for noise-canceling headphones

2019-07-22 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I think you can get headphones with active noise cancellation in
multiple formats, since after all, all you need is a microphone. I do
have a pair of headphones with active noise cancellation which are over
the head but have very small cups that don't really block out much
sound. I'm pretty sure Bose also has ear buds with active noise
cancellation.

Of course if you're going with passive noise cancellation, or combining
active and passive noise cancellation, then you'll have either cups that
will cover your whole ear or those silicon tipped ear buds that you
insert into your ear.

On 7/22/19 9:39 AM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote:

I think if you want a set like this for occasional use the Boltunes
would fill the bill nicely especially since you are not spending $300
for something you only use rarely.

I hardly ever use a headset for Jaws at work. If I am in my office I
am usually by myself unless my wife or another employee is reading
information from invoices to me which I am entering into my
bookkeeping program or if we are doing orders and if I am at my desk
in the store my employees and customers just have to put up with
hearing Eloquence, I don’t have it that loud and they are used to it.

Thanks for the run down.

It’s funny how we all have our own needs and criteria. I have the same
Logitech headset and they’re fine, but I’m at my PC all day handling
emails or phone calls for my business and having headphones on all day
with Jaws can get kind of tiresome. I don’t use the Bluetooth feature
with my phone though. For all day computer work, I opted to go with a
pare of Aftershokz Sports headset with an inline microphone. They’re
wired, but I don’t’ find it to be an inconvenience. That and Jaws
chattering all day every day doesn’t tire my ears out this way and
lets me still listen to whatever I want for pleasure in the evening or
what have you. Audio quality isn’t the “best” with the wired Sports
bone conduction headset, but for me at least, it’s more of a tool to
get things done rather than listening pleasure.

My H800 headset more often than not is just hanging there next to my
desk.

Regarding the Boltunes, did the ear cups completely cover your ears?
Is it a fully immersive fit? I too find wearing headphones covering my
ears can get hot after a while. This was another reason why I like
using my Trekz Air all the time. There’s no way I could wear earbuds
or on/over the ear ones while working out. That said, I was interested
in maybe getting something  that would go over the ear completely for
the times I wanted to block out other ambient noise without having to
crank up the volume level on my iPhone. I wouldn’t’ use them enough
for  me justifying dropping $200 plus for a pare.

Thanks again,

Cristóbal

Hi Cristobal,

I ended up sending them back and not because of the fact they sounded
bad or anything like that. The in fact sounded pretty good, the active
noise cancelling feature seems to work as advertised although I have
never used this feature on a high-end headset which costs $300 or $400.

The lack of lag I should say is super on these, I guess Bluetooth 5.0
in this case was implemented very well and when I tried them by typing
something it was super responsive.

They are also comfortable to wear, but I am just not used to wearing
over the ear headsets and found that after 10 minutes my ears were
getting hot and I realized I would just never use these a lot.

I had also purchased a set of the Logitech H800 headsets which are on
the ear, they are also lighter and you can use them with a PC via a
USB receiver, the main slider switch has 3 positions, off on the
bottom, Bluetooth in the middle and USB on top.

I now have these paired to my laptop via the USB dongle and to my
iPhone via Bluetooth and quite like this. I can also wear them for a
long time and find them comfortable.

They do, however, not block out a lot of outside noise, but for me
that is not an issue. If I really want this it is usually when I am
working with one of my machines in my woodworking shop and for that I
have a pair of ear protectors which are of course over the ear, lots
of insulation, but they are also Bluetooth so I can listen to a book

social fabric because people were just going to stay in their homes
instead of going out to seak entertainment and socialize. Now he says,
those were actaully the golden days of bringing families together
because now everyone just goes off into their own room with their own
device. This podcast was intended for the genral public and not the
blind, so it isn't true that people only worry about the blind losing
their socialization skills with services like this.

Hi,

"I still think an otherwise able-bodied blind person should go out
from time

this,

but after all one cannot sit around at home all day doing nothing and

While such comments are the sort I can easily dismiss and go on my way
that

might not be the case for others. as such
it saddens me that whenever discussions of anything that makes life
easier
whether it be shop at home services or having someone help you clean

people even within our own communities would say such things implying
that
those who use such services don't also do so via other means or should
need
to justify why they make use of such conveniences when sighted
counterparts

would never need to do so.
Obviously we aren't the only users of such services for if we were they
probably wouldn't be maintained. Thus if someone wouldn't make such
comments
to sighted users of such services it makes me sad that such would be
said in

relation to those who are blind.
I myself have benefitted greatly from the convenience of shopping from
home
whether it be via Peapod grocery delivery service or Amazon or the
like and

I also am found to be out and about in all manner of situations quite
frequently. The two aren't mutually exclusive.
To make this iPhone related the Peapod app along with too many other

with ease using Voiceover within their app.

And would you expect to get all of this done for you for free?
I think it's pretty amazing that for $99 a year you get this service and
delivery for free for a $35 or more order. Even $7 is a pretty low
delivery
fee, how much would it cost you to take a cab to the store to get $20
or $25

worth of product?
I fortunately live in a small town where I get a similar service
provided by
our local grocery stores for free, they know who I am and if I call
Safeway
and say "Hey, it's Sieghard, I'd like to pick up a few items on my way
home"
the answer usually is "OK, Sieghard, hang on for a sec so I can get a
piece

of paper and a pen". It so happens that I walk right by Safeway on my way
home from my store, it takes me about 8 minutes to walk from my store to
Safeway and another 10 from there home. If I call a few minutes before I
leave and give them 15 or 20 minutes my order is usually waiting for
me at

the customer service counter by the time I get there. If I am at home and
have a larger shop I want to do where maybe a friend can pick it up
for me
or where I send a cab they'll also charge it to my credit card and for
$11

our local taxi company goes there and picks it up for me.
Of course most people may not live in a place where they get such service
and in those cases a service like Shipt is amazing.
I still think an otherwise able-bodied blind person should go out from
time
to time to interact with others, not only is there a social aspect to
this,

but after all one cannot sit around at home all day doing nothing and
exercise is important.

Re: voiceover issue after turning phone

2019-07-22 Thread Richard Turner

The number of times I have had VoiceOver go quiet on me could be counted on one
hand.
When it does, it is usually waiting for an app, not when turning on.
If an XR is doing this, then something is really out of place.
What about resetting network settings, or resetting all settings?
A hard reset is fine, but if that doesn't work, try the network and/or all
settings reset.

Hi,
Sieghard says:
"I still think an otherwise able-bodied blind person should go out from
time to time to interact with others, not only is there a social aspect
to this,
but after all one cannot sit around at home all day doing nothing and
exercise is important."
While such comments are the sort I can easily dismiss and go on my way
that might not be the case for others. as such
it saddens me that whenever discussions of anything that makes life
easier whether it be shop at home services or having someone help you
clean come up people even within our own communities would say such
things implying that those who use such services don't also do so via
other means or should need to justify why they make use of such
conveniences when sighted counterparts would never need to do so.
Obviously we aren't the only users of such services for if we were they
probably wouldn't be maintained. Thus if someone wouldn't make such
comments to sighted users of such services it makes me sad that such
would be said in relation to those who are blind.
I myself have benefitted greatly from the convenience of shopping from
home whether it be via Peapod grocery delivery service or Amazon or the
like and I also am found to be out and about in all manner of
situations quite frequently. The two aren't mutually exclusive.
To make this iPhone related the Peapod app along with too many other
store iOS apps are quite accessible these days sometimes more so than
even the websites one can access via the pc. Just last night I couldn't
choose the color of something at
www.bedbathandbeyond.com on the pc with a screen reader but I could do
so with ease using Voiceover within their app.

So I say live and let live, use what works best for you and make no
apologies for it.

Take good care.

And would you expect to get all of this done for you for free?
I think it's pretty amazing that for $99 a year you get this service
and delivery for free for a $35 or more order. Even $7 is a pretty low
delivery fee, how much would it cost you to take a cab to the store to
get $20 or $25 worth of product?
I fortunately live in a small town where I get a similar service
provided by our local grocery stores for free, they know who I am and
if I call Safeway and say "Hey, it's Sieghard, I'd like to pick up a
few items on my way home" the answer usually is "OK, Sieghard, hang on
for a sec so I can get a piece of paper and a pen". It so happens that
I walk right by Safeway on my way home from my store, it takes me about

2019-07-22 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Mike,
I haven’t exactly seen that. I have had voiceover go silent from time to time
where I still get the voiceover sounds, but no speech. Generally speaking, if I
start my phone, voiceover is right there where it should be. Also, when it
happens that voiceover stops talking, turning it off and back on again
generally solves it.

voiceover issue after turning phone

2019-07-22 Thread Mike Arrigo
Hey everyone, this happens with all three of my iphones, iphone XR,
iphone 8 and iphone SE, although it is the worst with my XR. Here is
the issue. When I turn on the phone it starts up as normal but there is
no speech from voiceover. The phone is not muted and when I swipe
around the screen, the voiceover sound effects are there but there is
no speech for several minutes. Turning voiceover off and back on does
not help either. Sometimes it can literally take several minutes before
the speech starts working. I have tried the Tom and Alex voices and the
same thing happens. I've thought about hard resetting my phone but was
wondering if anyone has seen this issue before I do that. Suffice it to
say that it is quite annoying.

App to send email or text automatically

2019-07-22 Thread Dan Rathburn

Hi,

Looking for an IOS app that will send a pre-written text or email to a list
of recipients at a specific time of day. the message would be sent only
after I gave consent first. Basically, I live alone and I have relatives
that complain that I don't communicate often enough to let them know that
I'm in need of assistance. I've tried a couple of searches at the app store
without success. I'm not sure what search terms to use.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards,

Dan

Hi,

You would be better served by making a thread on the forum and asking
there. Otherwise I'll be playing messenger boy and things could get
mangled.

Also, some folks may realize that people may have more than one disability.
Also, I simply hate shopping and have never viewed shopping as a social
activity. I do prefer dining in a restaurant as opposed to having
restaurant food delivered to home, but dining alone in a restaurant can be a
truly depressing experience.

Hi,
Sieghard says:
"I still think an otherwise able-bodied blind person should go out from
time to time to interact with others, not only is there a social aspect to
this,
but after all one cannot sit around at home all day doing nothing and
exercise is important."
While such comments are the sort I can easily dismiss and go on my way
that might not be the case for others. as such
it saddens me that whenever discussions of anything that makes life easier
whether it be shop at home services or having someone help you clean come
up people even within our own communities would say such things implying
that those who use such services don't also do so via other means or
should need to justify why they make use of such conveniences when sighted
counterparts would never need to do so.
Obviously we aren't the only users of such services for if we were they
probably wouldn't be maintained. Thus if someone wouldn't make such
comments to sighted users of such services it makes me sad that such would
be said in relation to those who are blind.
I myself have benefitted greatly from the convenience of shopping from
home whether it be via Peapod grocery delivery service or Amazon or the
like and I also am found to be out and about in all manner of situations
quite frequently. The two aren't mutually exclusive.
To make this iPhone related the Peapod app along with too many other store
iOS apps are quite accessible these days sometimes more so than even the
websites one can access via the pc. Just last night I couldn't choose the
color of something at
www.bedbathandbeyond.com on the pc with a screen reader but I could do so
with ease using Voiceover within their app.

So I say live and let live, use what works best for you and make no
apologies for it.

Take good care.
Robin

And would you expect to get all of this done for you for free?
I think it's pretty amazing that for $99 a year you get this service and
delivery for free for a $35 or more order. Even $7 is a pretty low
delivery fee, how much would it cost you to take a cab to the store to get
$20 or $25 worth of product?
I fortunately live in a small town where I get a similar service provided
by our local grocery stores for free, they know who I am and if I call
Safeway and say "Hey, it's Sieghard, I'd like to pick up a few items on my
way home" the answer usually is "OK, Sieghard, hang on for a sec so I can
get a piece of paper and a pen". It so happens that I walk right by
Safeway on my way home from my store, it takes me about 8 minutes to walk
from my store to Safeway and another 10 from there home. If I call a few
minutes before I leave and give them 15 or 20 minutes my order is usually
waiting for me at the customer service counter by the time I get there. If
I am at home and have a larger shop I want to do where maybe a friend can
pick it up for me or where I send a cab they'll also charge it to my
credit card and for $11 our local taxi company goes there and picks it up
for me.
Of course most people may not live in a place where they get such service
and in those cases a service like Shipt is amazing.
I still think an otherwise able-bodied blind person should go out from
time to time to interact with others, not only is there a social aspect to
this, but after all one cannot sit around at home all day doing nothing
and exercise is important.

Regards,
Sieghard

Adding voice over accessibility to a game

2019-07-22 Thread 'Richard Claridge' via VIPhone
Hi all.
I am currently in discussion with a developer who want to know more about
making their existing games work with voice over. The games involve a lot of
text so it is definitely possible. In fact earlier iterations of the game were
developed by a different company and were accessible.
They have asked me if there are resources out there to explain more about voice
over and developing with it. So any links you can give me that discuss voice
over from a more technical development point of view would be really useful.
Thanks

Sieghard

This is mentioned in the article below. When I looked into this issue, I
found most of these services do charge membership fees, either monthly or
annually. What are the totally accessible shopping services that don't
charge any monthly or annual fees? Here's one article I found talking

Yup. My wife's sighted and she more or less does all the shopping, but if
I were alone or if we were both blind or even say if we had kids and
didn't want to deal with trying to carve out time to make a grocery run
with a carrier in tow, we'd probably opt for this, but as it is, she likes
going to Aldi and Sprouts and so on to see what they have.
The only other drawback perhaps is that more often than not, we're always
going to pay full price on stuff. Unless there's a way to somehow include
any running sales or discounts?

Janet:

Costco is the online ordering supplier. It is delivered by UPS or post
office.

Just sign up at Costco.com and set up your account, using your membership
number, then you can order from the online warehouse. Lots of items are
free two day shipping, if you have an order over $75, and other items that
are regular three to five business days are always free shipping no matter
how small the order.

You will see all about that when you look at their website.

I recently checked the cost for a case of V-8 juice from the website,
compared to in the store, and the cost was $1 higher if ordered online, but
it comes free shipping right to your door.

I do imagine that some items are not shipped free, but, so far, all the
items I have purchased have come free.

RE: Recommendations needed for noise-canceling headphones

2019-07-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, they are “over the ear” so your ears are completely inside and from what I
have seen every noise cancelling headset has that design since otherwise it
won’t really be effective in blocking out external noise.
I think if you want a set like this for occasional use the Boltunes would fill
the bill nicely especially since you are not spending $300 for something you
only use rarely.
I hardly ever use a headset for Jaws at work. If I am in my office I am usually
by myself unless my wife or another employee is reading information from
invoices to me which I am entering into my bookkeeping program or if we are
doing orders and if I am at my desk in the store my employees and customers
just have to put up with hearing Eloquence, I don’t have it that loud and they
are used to it.

Thanks for the run down.
It’s funny how we all have our own needs and criteria. I have the same Logitech
headset and they’re fine, but I’m at my PC all day handling emails or phone
calls for my business and having headphones on all day with Jaws can get kind
of tiresome. I don’t use the Bluetooth feature with my phone though. For all
day computer work, I opted to go with a pare of Aftershokz Sports headset with
an inline microphone. They’re wired, but I don’t’ find it to be an
inconvenience. That and Jaws chattering all day every day doesn’t tire my ears
out this way and lets me still listen to whatever I want for pleasure in the
evening or what have you. Audio quality isn’t the “best” with the wired Sports
bone conduction headset, but for me at least, it’s more of a tool to get things
done rather than listening pleasure.
My H800 headset more often than not is just hanging there next to my desk.
Regarding the Boltunes, did the ear cups completely cover your ears? Is it a
fully immersive fit? I too find wearing headphones covering my ears can get hot
after a while. This was another reason why I like using my Trekz Air all the
time. There’s no way I could wear earbuds or on/over the ear ones while working
out. That said, I was interested in maybe getting something that would go over
the ear completely for the times I wanted to block out other ambient noise
without having to crank up the volume level on my iPhone. I wouldn’t’ use them
enough for me justifying dropping $200 plus for a pare.
Thanks again,

Cristóbal

Hi Cristobal,

I ended up sending them back and not because of the fact they sounded bad or
anything like that. The in fact sounded pretty good, the active noise
cancelling feature seems to work as advertised although I have never used this
feature on a high-end headset which costs $300 or $400.
The lack of lag I should say is super on these, I guess Bluetooth 5.0 in this
case was implemented very well and when I tried them by typing something it was
super responsive.
They are also comfortable to wear, but I am just not used to wearing over the
ear headsets and found that after 10 minutes my ears were getting hot and I
realized I would just never use these a lot.
I had also purchased a set of the Logitech H800 headsets which are on the ear,
they are also lighter and you can use them with a PC via a USB receiver, the
main slider switch has 3 positions, off on the bottom, Bluetooth in the middle
and USB on top.
I now have these paired to my laptop via the USB dongle and to my iPhone via
Bluetooth and quite like this. I can also wear them for a long time and find
them comfortable.
They do, however, not block out a lot of outside noise, but for me that is not
an issue. If I really want this it is usually when I am working with one of my
machines in my woodworking shop and for that I have a pair of ear protectors
which are of course over the ear, lots of insulation, but they are also
Bluetooth so I can listen to a book while I am working or I’ll know when a call
comes in.
I did not try the Boltunes on a phone call so I can’t speak for the call
quality. All in all I think they are awesome if you want an over the ear
headset, great battery life, good audio quality and Bluetooth 5.0.

Regards,
Sieghard

The rotor only responds to single finger flicks up and down, so if he is
actually doing a three finger flick, it won't matter what the rotor is on.

I am also very social and active but live alone, am totally blind, do not
live in a small town and the grocery delivery is a huge benefit for me.

Hi,
Sieghard says:
"I still think an otherwise able-bodied blind person should go out from time
to time to interact with others, not only is there a social aspect to this,
but after all one cannot sit around at home all day doing nothing and
exercise is important."
While such comments are the sort I can easily dismiss and go on my way that
might not be the case for others. as such
it saddens me that whenever discussions of anything that makes life easier
whether it be shop at home services or having someone help you clean come up
people even within our own communities would say such things implying that
those who use such services don't also do so via other means or should need
to justify why they make use of such conveniences when sighted counterparts
would never need to do so.
Obviously we aren't the only users of such services for if we were they
probably wouldn't be maintained. Thus if someone wouldn't make such comments
to sighted users of such services it makes me sad that such would be said in
relation to those who are blind.
I myself have benefitted greatly from the convenience of shopping from home
whether it be via Peapod grocery delivery service or Amazon or the like and
I also am found to be out and about in all manner of situations quite
frequently. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

And would you expect to get all of this done for you for free?
I think it's pretty amazing that for $99 a year you get this service and
delivery for free for a $35 or more order. Even $7 is a pretty low delivery
fee, how much would it cost you to take a cab to the store to get $20 or $25
worth of product?
I fortunately live in a small town where I get a similar service provided by
our local grocery stores for free, they know who I am and if I call Safeway
and say "Hey, it's Sieghard, I'd like to pick up a few items on my way home"
the answer usually is "OK, Sieghard, hang on for a sec so I can get a piece
of paper and a pen". It so happens that I walk right by Safeway on my way
home from my store, it takes me about 8 minutes to walk from my store to
Safeway and another 10 from there home. If I call a few minutes before I
leave and give them 15 or 20 minutes my order is usually waiting for me at
the customer service counter by the time I get there. If I am at home and
have a larger shop I want to do where maybe a friend can pick it up for me
or where I send a cab they'll also charge it to my credit card and for $11
our local taxi company goes there and picks it up for me.
Of course most people may not live in a place where they get such service
and in those cases a service like Shipt is amazing.
I still think an otherwise able-bodied blind person should go out from time
to time to interact with others, not only is there a social aspect to this,
but after all one cannot sit around at home all day doing nothing and
exercise is important.

Sieghard

This is mentioned in the article below. When I looked into this issue, I
found most of these services do charge membership fees, either monthly or
annually. What are the totally accessible shopping services that don't

I apologize for repeat posts of a message I sent regarding a Voice

up in the Gmail app, which at first led me to think they were not

noticed that midway or so through the thread, the string "[External]"
had been included in the subject lines of posts to the group. I don't

Good to know, thanks. I guess what I really meant were things like coupons and
such.

Re: apple tv or amazon fire stick

2019-07-22 Thread Jess Shpek
Well I have an Amazon Fire and a very smart TV yet there are times where I
prefer to use the Fire with the Stremio addons
https://www.firesticktricks.com/best-stremio-addons.html

As an example, if I want to watch two games, one of which is only available
as a stream, and switch back and forth between them, it's much easier to
put the streaming video on the Fire and merely switch inputs on the TV to
switch back and forth. Were I using the Smart TV for streaming, it's much
more involved to switch back and forth between it and another source.

Yes, make sure what stores that Shipt delivers from. Some do deliver from
Kosco and others don't. If Shipt doesn't, then maybe Instacart does.

Janet:

Unfortunately, shipt does not deliver from Costco in our area, but Instacart
does.

Also, the Wal-mart delivery is also not available in our area yet, but we
can order online and have the order ready and loaded in the car for free.

There is a section for each store that offers on sale items.

I am with you! I hate going to Costco, and have found that I can get a lot
of their products from the online ordering service and get free shipping.
Items may be a few pennies higher, but the convenience is worth a little bit
more, so now we go fewer times a year to stock up on meat, and a few things
they don't have at Costco.com.
