Re: A Question for All of You Audio Book Lovers

2019-10-14 Thread Christina
Hi Mark,

I know Two different people who have used the Churp app and they both said it
was accessible. This was a few months ago, and I haven’t personally tried the
Churp app as I haven’t found a book I want to purchase yet.

RE: ITunes Backups

2019-10-14 Thread Feliciano Godoy
Hi,
Encrypted back-ups on iTunes include native message app messages. iCloud
back-ups also include messages if selected. Since iOS 12, messages are not
selected by default. This must be selected via Settings, Apple ID, iCloud and
insure messages is enabled.

Should there be any errors on iPhone or iOS device for that matter in the
future, you can connect device to a computer that has been used with the
device if back-up has been performed on computer.

I would set up iCloud backups and restore from that. It's simpler, and either
way, the apps are downloaded from Apple's servers. Just go to Settings, choose
the Apple ID setting near the top that has your name, and make sure iCloud
Backup is on. Then a backup will happen automatically every 24 hours or so,
when your device is on and connected to wi-Fi and power. There's also a Back Up
Now button you can use to back up the device at any time.

Then when you get your new device, choose to restore from an iCloud backup. It
will give you the choice of using your most recent backup.

Best,
Anna

RE: iPhone 8 with iOS 13.1.2 really short battery life

2019-10-14 Thread Feliciano Godoy
Hi,
Amazon Basics Lightning cables are also great. From my experience with these
cables, the newer model has a fat connector that does not allow connection when
an OtterBox defender case is being used. I used to like these cables until they
updated them with the fatter connector. Anker cables do not have this issue.
Just one thing to be aware of when purchasing if you have a case protector.

Hi,
Consider purchasing a certified Apple charging cable for your phone as it seems
like your current cable is on its way out. I personally like the anker brand.
These can be had on online, Amazon or your local Walmart.

Yes, you give it access to your Contacts.
You create your various groups in the app.
Then, you open the app, pick your group, pick whether you want to Text or
Email, write your message, and hit send.
There are more steps along the way, but it is pretty easy to figure out.

Re: iPhone 8 with iOS 13.1.2 really short battery life

2019-10-14 Thread Feliciano Godoy
Hi,
Consider purchasing a certified Apple charging cable for your phone as it seems
like your current cable is on its way out. I personally like the anker brand.
These can be had on online, Amazon or your local Walmart.

Re: groups app - to send messages to multiple recipients

2019-10-14 Thread Richard Turner
ABC groups can do either text messages or emails.
I use it for emails, but it works fine for text messages.
I always first think of emails unless people say specifically Text Messages.
That's because I'm old, or at least that's my excuse.

Cher, if you wish to send a text message to multiple persons all you need to do
is flick over to “add contact”, find your contact’s phone number and double
tap. You keep adding like this until you have every you wish to have the
message.

No, I find iCloud to be utterly frustrating.

ABC Groups is fairly easy to use and while you have to do your Email from
within the app, it works quite well.

Thanks for the suggestion. I found the Groups app in a search- but, of course,
accessibility was not mentioned. Have you also tried creating a group in
iCloud.com as the article suggestioned? Since the iCloud control panel is not

Is anyone using this app and can say whether it is accessible? I have seen it
recommended as an easy way to create a group which can repeatedly be used to
send messages to an entire group of recipients.

Is anyone using this app and can say whether it is accessible? I have seen it
recommended as an easy way to create a group which can repeatedly be used to
send messages to an entire group of recipients.

Hi Vicki,

My understanding is that an encrypted iTunes backup includes exactly the same
information as an iCloud backup, so I don't think your messages would be backed
up. I would suggest checking with Apple to be sure, though.

Subject: odd screen behavior within an app

As a point of reference, this is occurring on an updated 8 plus with a bit over
240 gig of storage and only one app in focus and active at a time. Now, if any
of you have played with the Vorail app, you know that driving that app around
involves allot of up and down swiping. However, very recently, the app does not
respond to up and down swipes. The app will play audio from the user defined
landing point such as the users inbox but it will go no further meaning you can
not access the rest of the app and the only option is to close the app. More on
that in a moment. As far as I am aware, I made no obvious changes to the Vorail
settings. Here’s where it got strange. I’d heard a bit of talk about an app
called Dabel. I decided to put it on the phone and kick the tires a bit and
that’s when Vorail went wonky. Just to be clear, I do not believe the 2 are
connected because when I removed Dabel, the problem with Vorail continued. A
number of removal and reinstall attempts did not clear up the Vorail screen
issue and closing the Vorail app through the app switcher has often been a bit
hit and miss. So much so that on a number of occasions, I’ve had to power off
the phone and restart it to be able to close Vorail from within the app
switcher. Has anyone seen this? What would cause this? Might there be a fix?
Thanks folks.

  Hi Vicki,

You shouldn't have trouble restoring a backup from an older operating system
to a newer one. The problem would be if your new device were running an older
operating system.

It will give you the choice of using your most recent backup.

  Best,
  Anna

Next, what are the steps for making a backup copy of my mini IPad II or

The problem, I believe, is going to show up in the transfer. I will be

which version will be on the new Mini IPad 5 or newer phone, but I currently
have the latest update of 12.4 on the Mini Ipad II and my older phone.

I know that people are having problems transferring the IOS versions with

is this problem worked around when you can't update the older IPad or phone,
but yet cannot transfer unless you have a matching version or the phone you are
transferring from has a later IOS version.

Hope this all makes sense.

Thanks.

RE: I have a quick question about reading multiple threads per message when using the iPhone email app

2019-10-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Or with the rotor on "Actions", swipe down until you get to "Expand Thread",
this will expand the thread into individual emails.
By the way, Richard, for me using iOS 13.1.2 the messages rotor works just fine
although the one thing I find in general in iOS 13 is that you often have to
turn the rotor back to a setting which you think would stick. One example is
reading a table in an email. I get order confirmation emails from one of my
suppliers where the items I ordered are listed in a table. Once I get to the
table I can turn the rotor counter clockwise once and land on "Rows", then if I
am, for example, on the description column I can flick down and Voiceover goes
down the table by row but it stays in the description column. This is quite
nice as I can quickly flick down through the table to hear the descriptions of
the items. However, if I flick right to get to the information about Quantity
Ordered and Quantity Shipped and the price and then I flick left again back to
description I first have to turn the rotor back to Rows because as soon as I
flick right once it looses the "Rows" rotor setting and I think it should stay
on it until I am done reading my table. I find this quite annoying in a number
of situations.

RE: A Question for All of You Audio Book Lovers

2019-10-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
After doing a bit of research it would seem that AudioBooks.com is very much
mimicking what obviously has been successful for Audible. They offer a $14.95 a
month subscription which gives you 1 credit just as with Audible. One review
which is a few years old mentioned that you can buy additional credits for the
same price and they felt that was a big benefit.
However, if you are a big listener you can get a 2-credit plan from Audible for
$22.95 a month which is less than $1150 per book and if you decide to purchase
this plan all at once, i.e. instead of paying $22.95 a month for 12 month which
equals $275.40, you can pay for 24 credits all at once and I believe that price
is then discounted to $229.99 which is approx. $9.58 per credit or book and
that of course is a much better deal.
Another thing which wasn't mentioned in this review are the specials Audible
members get. First there is the daily deal emails you can sign up for where you
get an offer every day to buy the book offered for between $3.95 and $5.95. Of
course there may be a week or 2 or even 3 where the book offered aren't what
you want, but I generally find at least 1 a month and sometimes 2, so even if
you subscribe to the one book plan from Audible for $14.95 and buy one more
book each month from the daily deal promotion for $5 you are in my opinion
better off.
Then there are all the other promotions where every month or two you get a
chance to either buy 2 books for 1 credit or you get a list of a few hundred
books where all the titles again are only $4.95 or $5.95.
F
Furthermore, if you use up your monthly credit or if you let 2 or 3 credits
accumulate and then use them all up at once,
Audible has been offering members to buy 3 additional credits for essentially
the same price as your membership credits.
And lastly, there is the selection which is probably one of the most important
aspects of an audio book service. At the time of the review AudioBooks.com
apparently had 100,000 titles, I think now they claim they have 150,000 titles
and they also mention you have access to over 700,000 Podcasts, but of course I
don't need to pay for an audio book service to access Podcasts. AudioBooks.com
apparently also offers free access to books which are in the public domain
whereas Audible often offers such books for purchase, but then they are often
new and high quality recordings and the price is usually not too high. In any
case, there again are many other sources for public domain books for free and I
must say at times I have purchased a public domain book from Audible because it
was read/performed so well. Audible Canada says their library contains
currently over 300,000 titles and in addition to offering many commercially
produced audio books, Audible is also a big content provider themselves, their
"Audible Frontiers" services produces many audio books and all in all I find
Audible to offer the most comprehensive service and I feel I get a pretty good
value for what I spend there.

Regards,
Sieghard

Re: finding all apps with location tracking enabled

2019-10-14 Thread Donald Raikes
While I didn't find the exact answer to this question for others
wishing to reset location tracking, do the following:

1. goto settings -> general -> reset.
2. tap the reset location and privacy button.
you will be prompted to enter your password.
Once you enter your password you will be asked to confirm that you
want to reset the location and privacy settings tap the button and all
location tracking is turned off.

Then when you access an app that can use location tracking you will be
prompted to enable it again.

Hope this helps others.

In an effort to reduce the drain on my iPhone's battery, i am
wondering if there is a way to identify all apps that have location
tracking enabled and disable those that really don't need it enabled?

Short of going through every app on my phone and checking individually :-)

Obviously things like SoundScape and maps need location tracking but I
don't know that much else actually needs it enabled.

Thanks in advance,

Re: I have a quick question about reading multiple threads per message when using the iPhone email app

2019-10-14 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I'm a little confused about the topic here. Are we talking about reading
a thread with multiple messages in it? A message with multiple threads
it in doesn't make any sense to me.

In addition to what Richard suggests below, when in the list of threads,
you can flick up or down until you hear expand messages in thread and
then you'll be able to flick from message to message in that thread.

Richard. I don't know what is supposed to happen when reading a multiple
threaded message with the iPhone email app. Do I need to turn off a
setting. Thanks for some clarification.

On 10/14/19, Richard Turner wrote:

I turned off threading because of the issues in iOS 13.
You could try the Outlook app as Devin suggested if threading is

I don't use the Outlook app, so cannot say if it is better.

Hello All,

I’ve been trying the trial version of this app. I can see books, and read the
first page, but I’m not sure how to navigate beyond this. Has anyone use this
app and had good luck with it? How do I read a book with it?

Thanks,

You turn the rotor until it says messages, then swipe down with one finger.
That should put you in the next message.
Repeat until you get through all the messages.

2019-10-14 Thread 'Ray T. Mahorney' via VIPhone

RE: ITunes Backups

2019-10-14 Thread Robert Wright
Vicki, the main difference between backing up to iTunes and backing up to iCloud
is that when backing up to iCloud you can set up a new device from any wi-fi.
Whereas, with iTunes you must be at your PC.

Hi Vicki,

You shouldn't have trouble restoring a backup from an older operating system to
a newer one. The problem would be if your new device were running an older
operating system.

Best,
Anna

I have a somewhat detailed question on backing up and restoring a mini IPAD II
to a Mini IPad 5 and or an older IPhone which cannot be updated beyond IOS 12

First of all, what version of ITunes is best to use? I have both Windows 7 and
10 with JAWS 2019 or 2020 beta.

Next, what are the steps for making a backup copy of my mini IPad II or older
phone?

Third, how can I transfer this to the new Mini IPad 5 or newer phone?

The problem, I believe, is going to show up in the transfer. I will be trying
to put a different IOS version from one to the other. I'm not certain which
version will be on the new Mini IPad 5 or newer phone, but I currently have the
latest update of 12.4 on the Mini Ipad II and my older phone.

I know that people are having problems transferring the IOS versions with older
IPhones that cannot be updated to IOS 13 to newer phones with IOS 13. How is
this problem worked around when you can't update the older IPad or phone, but
yet cannot transfer unless you have a matching version or the phone you are
transferring from has a later IOS version.

Hope this all makes sense.

Thanks.

RE: groups app - to send messages to multiple recipients

2019-10-14 Thread Robert Wright
Cher, if you wish to send a text message to multiple persons all you need to do
is flick over to “add contact”, find your contact’s phone number and double
tap. You keep adding like this until you have every you wish to have the
message.

I have been talking about text messaging- not email. I’m not sure I
communicated that very well- esp. as you mentioned email in your reply.

Since the iCloud control panel is not
very friendly, I questioned whether iCloud.com was any better.

i prefer ABC Groups. For $1.99 you can remove ads.
I use this one all the time for our book club, and a few other groups.
Fully accessible.

Is anyone using this app and can say whether it is accessible? I have seen it
recommended as an easy way to create a group which can repeatedly be used to
send messages to an entire group of recipients.

Hello Mark. I know the e mail that you are talking about chirp and also the
books that they offer. I should point out that this seems to be only for people
who live in the US and so if people live out side of the US like in Canada I am
ot shure if you are able to pay for the books or not. I have not used the app
but do get the news letter. I also feel that wile the books and stuff are good
discounts it would be nice if they were offerd in Canadion as well since wile
they might be a good discount in USD not so in CAD. From Mich.

Subject: A Question for All of You Audio Book Lovers

Hello Everyone,

There is an audio book discount service called Chirp Books.com.

I receive a daily email containing recommended audio books that I have found
to be excellent. Now, generally speaking, I learn about books from this
service, then either download them from Apple Books, Audible, BARD or Over
Drive.

There website is fully screen reader accessible and they do have an app for
iOS in which one can purchase the titles, at the discounted price.

Question, has anyone ever actually used the Chirp Books app, with VoiceOver
to download and listen to purchased titles?

Mark
