Hello Everyone,

While I would love to thank each of you, individually, for your support on
this, I realize that doing so would clutter up the list, a bit.

So, Anna, Gail, Dennis, Fred, and everyone, please accept my sincere
appreciation for taking the time to answer the proverbial call.

Also, it looks like those who have already filed 2019 tax returns are the first
to get money, that is, if they have direct deposit set up. Those who filed
last in 2018 will be next.

Three people I know got their money in the bank account today and they report
that they have filed 2019 returns. Another friend and I haven't filed yet, so
still waiting.

RE: A Question for iTunes 12.6.5.3 for Windows Users

2020-04-16 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Julian,

I am glad you can still perform a backup on your Windows PC.

You are using an X R. I am using an 8 Plus. There must be some difference,
there.

I thought about re-installing this version of iTunes over my current version
but, now that I think about it, there is really no need for me to hang onto
this version since I rarely copy apps to the phone from my PC. Mind you, I
still like to write reviews via iTunes for Windows but, more often than not, I
find myself using my iPad Pro to write reviews.

Alas, I am resigned to the idea that I will need to update to the latest
version of iTunes for Windows before purchasing my next phone.

iTunes 12.6.x for Windows, it was a great run while it lasted (smile).

Hi Mark,

I am running iOS 13.4.1 on my iPhone XR and my computer is Windows 7 running
the latest version of the iTunes software for business that you shared on this

2020-04-16 Thread Mary Otten
Chirp is an audiobook service which offers books sometimes a discount. So you
get an email after you sign up, and you can tell them what genres you like. So
your email reflects those. These are the same books that are on Audible. But
sometimes they have these deals.
and Church has an app which is accessible on the phone.

As somebody pointed out, it's I think $229 and a few cents which works out to
about $9.55 per credit.
If you are down to I think 2 credits (maybe it's 1) you are given the offer to
buy 3 extra credits and you then get then for the same per credit price, e.g.
$9.55/credit or about $28.65 or so for 3 more credits.
Once you use some of them you again can buy 3 more etc.
It is also very worthwhile to subscribe to the daily deal emails. You get an
email during the night with 1 book which may cost anywhere from $3.95 to $5.95.
You may get this email for 3 weeks without a single book you like, but then
sometimes I get 2 in a row with books I like and even if you only find 1 book a
month for $5 or so it's a really good deal.
Then there are all the other promotions like those where you get a list of a
few hundred books and they are all $4.95 or you get to choose 2 books for 1
credits or 3 books for 2 credits and so on. There are often promotions which
help you stretch your credits or bring down the average you spend on each book.
I once calculated that on average over 1 year the books I bought cost me $7 or
so each after using promos and all that.

hi,

I assume this has to be done thorugh a browser as you cnat' even buy
audable books from the ap you can only use your credits. I too like the
Platinum anual membership you get a credit for about $12 insted of $14.
It's the best value.

question though. I've heard people say you can buy credits if you use most of
yours. when doesthat happen. I started my membership in Jan and I'
down to about 6 credits now. I'll probly run out before my renewel in
january.

RE: Apple Newsroom: iPhone SE: A powerful new smartphone in a popular design

2020-04-16 Thread Carolyn
I think your idea is best. I have had mine since January 3 and never turned it
off until recently. It runs fine. So, I'm thinking, if it works go for it, and
if it gets sluggish try the turn off. I just appreciate someone telling me how
to do it. Also, I was told that it takes, I think, about 25 seconds for it to
come back up. And, I did have to punch in my six digit passcode.

I choose to do that when the phone begins behaving oddly; things not loading,
mail not being downloaded
I usually first flush the RAM by holding the power button until VO says Power
off. Then, release the power button and then press and hold the home button
until it comes back talking.
That now requires your pass code when it comes back.
Sometimes that clears the issue, but if not, I power off and back on.

Some people reboot every day; if you are really not sure, call Apple
Accessibility to get some official opinion if you can.

I'm a little confused why you are posting something about iOS 11?
Granted some of the techniques are the same with iOS 13, but why not post
information specific to the current devices especially given the subject line.

RE: Apple Newsroom: iPhone SE: A powerful new smartphone in a popular design

2020-04-16 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz
I've got a 256 GB XR and have around 80 GB available space. Individual
circumstances and needs aside, the counterargument would be that for an extra
$100, you'd be doubling your storage space.
I will say, face ID's never won me over since half the time, I still have to
punch in my code anyway and especially now with face masks likely being the
norm for a good long while when out and about, it's not like unlocking the
phone's going to be any easier with just one's mug. Even though I'm a big guy,
I still don't like handling my XR with just one hand. I am tempted to swap it
out for this new SE.

I totally agree with Andy. I think that for most blind people, 256 is not
necessary. If you’re not downloading lots of videos and movies, you just don’t
need that much space. I have a lot of books on my phone. Audible books. Bard
books. Chirpbooks. All of them audio, plus a whole bunch of bookshare books,
all in print of course. I also have a lot of apps. My phone is 128 GB, and I
still have somewhere around 45 left. I can’t conceive of wanting to spend the
extra money to get 256 GB. To each their own, of course. But a lot of times,
you just waste your money on all that extra that you really don’t need or won’t
use.

Re: Apple Newsroom: iPhone SE: A powerful new smartphone in a popular design

2020-04-16 Thread Andy Baracco
Before you buy a new phone, you might want to check your usage under
settings. I have a 64 GB iPhone 8 and am only using about 30 GB. You might
end up spending extra money to buy storage that you don't actually need.
It's like those folks who load up on RAM on their PCs even though they
mostly only do Email and web surfing.

I bought a 256 gig iPhone 8 because I knew I'd need a lot of space.
I've got loads of NLS bard books on my phone as well as loads of books
and audio dramas in Voice Dream Reader. When I need a new iPhone and
a model comes out with even more space I'll probably get that model.

It's the best value.

question though. I've heard people say you can buy credits if you use most
of yours. when doesthat happen. I started my membership in Jan and I'
down to about 6 credits now. I'll probly run out before my renewel in

I don't use audible on my iPhone, but I know you can subscribe from
the website. It depends on how much money you want to spend. The
plans are based on different colors like gold platinum or silver.
Here's how the plans work. One plan the cheapest gets you 1 credit
per month which is one book for $14 per month. Every month you'd get
one credit automatically added to your audible account. The next plan
is $22 per month which gets you 2 credits per month. The next plan is
12 credits all at once. I forget exactly how much this plan is but
around $100 or so. The plan which I have is the most expensive. For
$230 all at once you can get 24 credits all at once. However, if I
want to purchase 3 credits for more books that only costs me about $28
give or take some change. Good luck.

I like Houdini, but it’s the only one I’ve ever tried. It does YouTube
playlists, Apple Music, and Spotify. It’s accessible except for one part. When
you select playlists there isn’t any VoiceOver feedback as to if a playlist is
selected, so you just have to go by faith that when you double tapped on it,
that it is selected. It’s a very simple app and others may have more features.

I don’t mind paying necessarily, but if there’s some sort of open source app

My Pandora Premium promo is ending this weekend and I recently scored a fre 90

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Apple's iPhone Payment Plan versus Apple upgrade program

2020-04-16 Thread Alan Lemly
The below article provides a good explanation of financing a new iPhone
purchased directly from Apple at 0% interest rate. I've purchased a couple of
iPhones financed by Apple's partner bank Citizens One and had no problem doing
so. The article came from this website and is pasted following my signature:

https://www.imore.com/iphone-payments-faq

Alan Lemly

Apple's iPhone Payments financing option: Everything you need to know!

Get a zero-percent interest loan directly from Apple with the iPhone Payments
plan.

Lory Gil

15 Apr 2020

Apple iPhone SE (2020)

Source: Apple

There are now three different ways to finance an iPhone through Apple. The
first is the iPhone Upgrade Program, which the iPhone SE (2020) is not eligible
for. The second is using your Apple Card to make monthly payments (a
zero-percent interest loan), which is exclusive to those that have an Apple
Card. The third is the iPhone Payments plan, which is a zero-percent interest
loan from Apple that makes it possible for you to buy a new iPhone without
having to pay the full price upfront.

The iPhone Payments plan is different from the iPhone Upgrade program in one
major way: you're not trading in your iPhone to upgrade next year. Here's
everything you need to know!

How is Apple iPhone Payments different from the iPhone Upgrade Program?

On the surface, it may seem like the iPhone Upgrade Program and the iPhone
Payments plan are the same, but they're not. They are entirely different
finance programs with different features and restrictions.

Best online learning tools for kids: ABCmouse, Reading IQ, & more

The iPhone Upgrade program allows you to begin a sort-of leasing program with
Apple, wherein you can trade in your current iPhone and upgrade to a new one in
as early as six months with fees, or one year without additional fees. If,
after two years, you want to upgrade, you can, but you don't have to trade in
the iPhone you've been using on the iUP, it's yours to keep.

With the iPhone Payments plan, you're simply taking out a two-year loan on an
iPhone with a carrier plan, but the loan is done through Apple's financial
collaborator, Citizens One. You won't be able to trade it in for an upgrade
after one year. You have to pay the full loan (though you could pay the loan
off early if you wanted to).

On the iPhone Upgrade Program, AppleCare+ is folded into the cost, so your
monthly payments are slightly higher, though you're not paying any fees. It's
just the cost of an iPhone with AppleCare+ divided by 24 months.

On the iPhone Payments plan, you don't have to buy AppleCare+. In fact, if you
want it, you have to purchase it separately, which you can do on installments
now.

If you just want an iPhone, and don't need AppleCare+ and don't plan to upgrade
every year, or even have a plan for future iPhone upgrading, the iPhone
Payments plan will work for you.

One final note: the iPhone SE (2020) is not eligible for the iPhone Upgrade
Program, so if that's the phone you're buying, the iPhone Payments Plan is what
you want.

So I can't upgrade every year on the iPhone Payments plan?

Correct. The iPhone Payments plan is a loan financing program that lets you
make monthly payments across 24 months on an iPhone. Even if you get rid of the
iPhone a year or the day after you've made your final payment, you must pay the
full amount (though you can pay the loan off early).

Do I have to get AppleCare+ with it?

Nope! One complaint I heard from some people interested in the iPhone Upgrade
Program is that they're forced to have AppleCare+, but with the iPhone Payments
plan, you don't have to.

In fact, if you want it, you have to purchase it separately from your loan. You
can, however, make monthly payments for AppleCare+ now.

What is the interest rate?

Zero percent financing, my friend. That's right. You won't pay more than the
actual cost of the iPhone plus taxes (through Apple), as if you were paying for
it with cash upfront.

Can I use my Apple Card as a payment option?

You sure can. Once you're approved for the loan, you can use your Apple Card as
your monthly payment option, which gives you that sweet 3% cashback reward
every time you make a payment.

Will there be a hard credit pull?

Apple' states that "a credit check is required," but doesn't give a lot of
detail as to whether it's a soft or hard pull on your credit report. If it's
anything like the iPhone Upgrade Program, however, it'll be a soft pull until
Citizens One determines it needs a deeper credit check.

A note about credit freezes

If you've put a credit freeze on your credit report, there are a few things you
should know about applying for your iPhone Payments loan.

A credit freeze is a way for you to restrict access to your credit report to
protect you from identity theft. If you've put a freeze on your credit report,
it doesn't affect your credit score or keep you from being able to apply for
loans. There are some

Re: Audible can you subscribe via the application and what are the different subscription prices available in Canada

2020-04-16 Thread Wayne Merritt
And, if you subscribe now, you will lock in that price for as long as
you use the service. I subscribed several years ago for about $11.95
per month for 1 credit, and I'm still paying that price, even though
the price has apparently gone up to $14. it depends on how much you
read and how many books you think you will get from Audible. I use it
for the best-sellers that I absolutely love, and don't want to wait to
show up on BARD. If you are a BARD user, you can probably find many of
the same titles there for free. Though both services have their own
nitch titles and subjects.

Be well,

There shouldn't be any need to restart your iPhone once a day.

I probably restart mine, about, once every 2 or 3 weeks.

Hello All,

Recently I posted about an on-device, self-voicing Monopoly-like game for
iOS, called EarsOpoly.

While I continue to enjoy the game, I am all but certain that it will
cease

to function-as-expected in future versions of iOS; primarily because it is
no longer being maintained by the developer, Kid Friendly Software.

A couple of days ago, I contacted the developers of the official Parker
Brothers Monopoly game for iOS, Marmalade Games Studio, requesting that
they

add VoiceOver accessibility to Monopoly.

I received a very positive response.

So, I am asking for your support in contacting Marmalade Games Studio with
a

similar request. I am certain that they will listen to us if we make our
voices heard.

To contact them, simply do the following:

1.
Go to: https://www.marmaladegamestudio.com/contact/

This should take you directly to the contact form. If it does not then go
to:

https://www.marmaladegamestudio.com/

and then click the Contact link. A short form will be displayed.

2.
In the first edit field, enter your name.

3.
In the second edit field, enter your email address.

4.
In the third and final edit field, enter the text of your message. I
simply

asked them to make their Monopoly game either self-voicing or VoiceOver
accessible, so that visually impaired people can enjoy the game.

5.
Click the "Send Message" button in order to send them your message.

That's all there is to it.

As always, your support is greatly appreciated and I hope someday I will
have the pleasure of informing the group that the official Parker Brothers
Monopoly game, for iOS, is accessible to us all.

Sincerely,

Mark

Displaying Folders In Voice Dream Reader

2020-04-16 Thread Joy Cyr
Good day,
I've been importing a wide variety of files into my Voice Dream Reader. I'm
delighted with how it reads them and how simple it is to move between files and
resume reading where you paused. However, with the increasing number of files
I wanted to organize them and make bouncing between topics etc. faster and
simpler. So I set up folders and (supposedly) added files to them. However, I
cannot figure out how to bring up a list of folders and/or open them. All my
files are still jumbled together in the one folder and for a variety of reasons
this is becoming a problem. Any advice on accessing the folders would be most
appreciated.

Also could someone please be so kind as to share the subscription information
for the Voice Dream list? I have a feeling I'll be needing a little more help
as I continue to explore it.

Thank you all very much,
Joy

Re: Audible can you subscribe via the application and what are the different subscription prices available in Canada

2020-04-16 Thread Joshua Hendrickson
Good luck.

RE: Apple Newsroom: iPhone SE: A powerful new smartphone in a popular design

2020-04-16 Thread Richard Turner

Restart device regularly

You should restart your phone at least once per day.

Manage apps to keep your device running smoothly.

*   Use Manage apps

to update apps, clear app cache and data, recent apps, and uninstall an app.
* Never install a third-party Task Manager or Battery Manager.
These apps interfere with how device software works.
* Research and monitor new apps that you install.

* Read app reviews before installing. Not all apps run
smoothly on phones. Read customer reviews before downloading an app to see if
it has a history of not working properly.
* If your device starts having problems after installing
an app, consider uninstalling the app. (See Manage apps.)

A task manager can view running apps and close them.

2. Swipe right or left to find the app that you want to close.
3. Swipe up on the app's preview to close the app.

3. Firmly touch and hold the app, then tap -. You can also swipe

Hello,

You also can simply use the share option in the VO rotor when on the tweet you
would like to copy. This will open the default iOS share sheet and Twitterrific
adds an copy option in the lower half of the share sheet in actions.

RE: Stimulus Info

2020-04-16 Thread Carolyn
I did not know what SSI was until this week. I got Social Security Disability
Income for a few years, got it, and now my regular Social Security on the 3rd
of each month. My birthday falls in the second week of the month, since it is
on the 11th day of the month. Some people with Social Security get theirs on
the Wednesday of the week of their birthday - friend on 17th gets 3rd
Wednesday; husband on 24th and cousin on 23rd get theirs 4th Wednesday, but
mine comes on the 3rd.

Someone wondered about the alphabet, since my name starts with A, but my 17th
friend's name starts with B. Go figure.

Do you get the money on the first of the month? If so that is SSI and SSDI
comes on a different day. There is also a maximum amount that SSSI recipients
receive and it is under $800 per month.

RE: Apple Newsroom: iPhone SE: A powerful new smartphone in a popular design

2020-04-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I think this is a bit like hording, I mean no offense, by the way, Joshua, but
I for one don't need to have all my music and all my audio books on my iPhone
at all times. Granted I use Audible, but if I downloaded every Audible book I
ever purchased I'd probably need an iPhone with 2 Tb of storage, but since I
can access my Audible books any time I want and download one in seconds or,
even if you don't have a fast fiber connection, in minutes, I am perfectly fine
with that.
Same goes for music, I can tell SIRI anything I want to listen to and it will
stream via my Apple Music subscription and if I am on a long flight (not very
likely any time soon) I rather listen to an audio book anyways so I just make
sure I have a few of them downloaded.

My 2 cents: If you don't have a good reason for getting 256 gigs of storage,
save some money and don't do it. I had an iPhone with 256 gigs storage and for
most of the year I had the phone, I didn't store more than 50 gigs. I'm
sticking to the 128 gig storage phones, unless I suddenly come across a huge
need for more storage. 128 suits me fine though, since about half is taken up
with music, books, and apps, and I've got lots of storage to go before getting
close to filling up my phone.

I do not know that you are missing anything.
Either your WiFi router is not maintaining a solid WiFi connection; your iPhone
WiFi antenna is bad; or your internet provider is having issues.
So, you could either call your internet provider and get them to run their
diagnostics; call Apple Accessibility and have them run their diagnostics, or
buy a new router and see if that fixes things.

I have the 7thgen, 10.2 inch iPad. Which case do you think is the best for
this device. I heard so many talk about the slim folio like it was the

case makes a huge difference in how well I can use the device.
So please give me your opinion as a more experienced user.

RE: ram, what is it

2020-04-16 Thread Richard Turner
RAM stands for Random Access Memory.
Think of it as the memory that is available while the device is on, but goes
away when it is off.
The more RAM you have, the quicker the device can shuffle tasks, deal with
installation of apps, downloads, etc.
The main memory that saves your music, notes, etc., is Flash memory that is
there all the time and doesn't depend on the device being on.

Hi

In basic terms the amount of RAM you have dictates how many things you can do
at once. As you start to do more and more things, or if the thing you're doing
is very complex you'll find that things in the background stop working and or
your device starts to slow down.

Think of it in the same way you would do the size of your desk: a big desk will
let you work on lots of things at once or a few more complex tasks, a smaller
one obviously allowing you to do less. Eventually, if you try to do too many
things at once or the thing you're working on is really complicated, you'll
find that you don't have enough space on your desk so might have to start using
a filing cabinet as extra storage. It's not that you're not able to complete
the task it's just that it's going to take you longer to do it than it would do
if you'd purchased a larger desk.

Cheers,
Ben.

Re: ram, what is it

2020-04-16 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Hi

In basic terms the amount of RAM you have dictates how many things you
can do at once. As you start to do more and more things, or if the
thing you're doing is very complex you'll find that things in the
background stop working and or your device starts to slow down.

Think of it in the same way you would do the size of your desk: a big
desk will let you work on lots of things at once or a few more complex
tasks, a smaller one obviously allowing you to do less. Eventually, if
you try to do too many things at once or the thing you're working on
is really complicated, you'll find that you don't have enough space on
your desk so might have to start using a filing cabinet as extra
storage. It's not that you're not able to complete the task it's just
that it's going to take you longer to do it than it would do if you'd
purchased a larger desk.

Cheers,
Ben.

Re: Apple Newsroom: iPhone SE: A powerful new smartphone in a popular design

2020-04-16 Thread Joshua Hendrickson
I bought a 256 gig iPhone 8 because I knew I'd need a lot of space.
I've got loads of NLS bard books on my phone as well as loads of books
and audio dramas in Voice Dream Reader. When I need a new iPhone and
a model comes out with even more space I'll probably get that model.

ram, what is it

2020-04-16 Thread Paul and Paula Jordan
Hi all. Just a curiosity question. There has been some discussion about
how many gig of ram a particular phone has. What difference does it make
whether you have 2 or 3 gig of ram. I understand that this is different
than the gig of storage, but just wondering why we need so much. Sorry for
my ignorance. As always, thanks for all the good information you all
provide.

God bless!

2020-04-16 Thread Wayne Merritt
My 2 cents: If you don't have a good reason for getting 256 gigs of
storage, save some money and don't do it. I had an iPhone with 256
gigs storage and for most of the year I had the phone, I didn't store
more than 50 gigs. I'm sticking to the 128 gig storage phones, unless
I suddenly come across a huge need for more storage. 128 suits me fine
though, since about half is taken up with music, books, and apps, and
I've got lots of storage to go before getting close to filling up my
phone.

Hello Matthew,

He has said, quote, otherwise, quote.

I do not know all of the details but Kid Friendly was sold and the on-device
games are not being developed.

In fact, there are already several minor features of the game that do not
function-as-expected, in the current release of iOS.

Kid Friendly Software is Marty Schultz from Blindfold Games, so he should
keep development of that game going, unless he has said otherwise.

Hello All,

Recently I posted about an on-device, self-voicing Monopoly-like game for
iOS, called EarsOpoly.

While I continue to enjoy the game, I am all but certain that it will cease
to function-as-expected in future versions of iOS; primarily because it is
no longer being maintained by the developer, Kid Friendly Software.

A couple of days ago, I contacted the developers of the official Parker
Brothers Monopoly game for iOS, Marmalade Games Studio, requesting that they
add VoiceOver accessibility to Monopoly.

I received a very positive response.

So, I am asking for your support in contacting Marmalade Games Studio with a
similar request.

I simply
asked them to make their Monopoly game either self-voicing or VoiceOver
accessible, so that visually impaired people can enjoy the game.

5.
Click the "Send Message" button in order to send them your message.

That's all there is to it.

As always, your support is greatly appreciated and I hope someday I will
have the pleasure of informing the group that the official Parker Brothers
Monopoly game, for iOS, is accessible to us all.

Sincerely,

Mark

Re: Calling All Fans of the Parker Brother's Monopoly Board Game

2020-04-16 Thread Wayne Merritt
I don't have any solid information, but I heard recently that Kid
Friendly Software has stopped or will soon stop development on current
and future titles. Though this may be disappointing for some, the
developer has contributed many games to the community, something
around 80 or 100. I don't personally agree with his method of in-app
purchases, and think that there are other higher quality games out
there, but that's just me.

Be well,
Wayne Merritt

Re: Twitterrific - how to select and copy text?

2020-04-16 Thread Chris Chaffin

You can use the label editor to do this. When on the tweet you want to select,
do a 2 finger double tap and hold. A pop up screen will appear with the tweet
in an edit field. You can then use the text selection and the edit controls in
the rotor to select and do what you wish with the text.

Hope this helps.

Re: backing up my iPhone

2020-04-16 Thread Richard Turner
I do not know that you are missing anything.
Either your WiFi router is not maintaining a solid WiFi connection; your iPhone
WiFi antenna is bad; or your internet provider is having issues.
So, you could either call your internet provider and get them to run their
diagnostics; call Apple Accessibility and have them run their diagnostics, or
buy a new router and see if that fixes things.

Re: what about the sticky notification bug

2020-04-16 Thread englishrider91
Hi, Sieghard,

The problem with this is that banner-style notifications are supposed to go
away after a minute or so, maybe less. They don't now, which is not something
I'm okay with. It's either a new bug (which is likely) or a feature Apple
introduced (unlikelyotherwise there'd be no need for alert-style notifications.
Either way, it's highly annoying" I can't always swipe down on them to dismiss
them. This happens a lot when I'm doing dishes or something similar where my
hands are totally messy, and I don't want to touch my iPhone. I could turn on
do not disturb, but then I'd miss stuff like texts and phone calls. And putting
absolutely every one of my contacts on the emergency bypass setting is neither
a satisfactory nor practical solution around the problem--as it would just be
super clunky, and wouldn't cover callers outside of your contacts. Apple really
needs to fix this, and I plan on telling them about it.

Thanks,
Ari
