I've never had a situation where apple have forced me to take on an update to
my devices.

Apple already aggressively pushes out updates to their devices, for example,
within a few days of a release, you won't be able to roll back to a previous
release. Plus they drop pushing out security updates once a newer release has
been deployed. With the adoption rate Apple has with new releases, I doubt it
would be a serious PR issue for them to stop providing customer support for a
release that's been superseded by a newer release that's still getting security
updates. Apple wouldn't be the first company to ask you to update to a newer
version of software before providing you support. Sometimes this is legitimate,
since newer versions of the software will contain fixes for issues being
reported to customer support. . You may be able to stay on IOS 12.4.1, but
there's no guarantee that Apple will continue to provide customer support for
an unsupported version of IOS.

Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with you staying on IOS 12.4.1 as
long as you want. My only reason for posting is to let others know that there's
no obligation or guarantee from Apple to support 12.4.1 forever. Plus, anyone
who stays on IOS 12.4.1 will be missing out on security patches and may not get
support from app developers on 12.4.1. I'm totally on board with people having
the right to choose, as long as they're given accurate information to make that
choice.

RE: Smart Bulbs With Alexa?

2020-08-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Makes sense that in a rental situation you wouldn't want to spend a lot of
money for installation and such and in any case, you would have to first get
permission and all that.
Not sure why you don't find Hue products on Amazon.ca, there are dozens and all
you have to do is search for "Philips Hue". Anyways, below is one particular
light bulb, at $59.99 it's also more expensive, but apparently it can be
controlled bia Bluetooth and you don't need the Hue Bridge which is what we
have and what has to be connected to your router with an ethernet cable. It
says you can control up to 10 bulbs with the Hue Bluetooth app and this might
be all you need if you just want 2 or 3 bulbs. But I'd check out the starter
kits, if you buy 3 bulbs for $60 that is also $180 and you can probably buy a
starter kit with a bridge and 2 bulbs for not much more and then you can buy
much less expensive bulbs. I also assume that Bluetooth controlled bulbs limit
you to Bluetooth range whereas if you have the Hue bridge you can control your
lights from anywhere even if you are not at home.

Thanks much, Sieghard, for this detailed answer. I do appreciate for that
I am a tenant and I don’t want to spend money on smart switches and electrician
but smart bulb is a vible option at this time for me.
I tried to find Flip Hue bulbs on Amazon but I couldn’t find those.
Do you think that you can find for me and send me link?
I am looking four-pack.
Thanks again!

Subject: RE: Smart Bulbs With Alexa?

Yes to all 3 questions is correct, but keep in mind that if your mechanical
switch is turned off the smart bulb will not work. We have Philips Hue bulbs
and lights throughout our house. For my wife and myself this is no problem, all
our switches are usually turned on and we just ask Alexa or our Google
Assistant or SIRI (Philips Hue works with all 3) to turn off whichever light.
However, when we have visitors they are often confused, so let's say they walk
into the bathroom and press the decora wall switch which is in the on position,
but the light is turned off via the smart bulb, then of course nothing happens
because they just turned off the light. Then they usually press the switch
again the other way and of course the light now comes on. When they leave the
room the turn it off again and at that point my wife or I first would have to
go around the house and turn on all the switches when the visitor or visitors
are gone and then carry on with using voice controls to turn off the lights.
I bought most of the Philips Hue bulbs years ago when there were not as many
options available, but if I had to do it over I would not buy smart bulbs but
rather smart switches. Yes, you have to get an electrician to install them and
depending on how old the place is there is a small chance they may not work
because they require a third "neutral" wire" which in some older installations
is not there, but if it is there I would absolutely go for smart switches
instead because they work regardless whether somebody just pushed them to turn
off the lights. The switches from Meross are quite good, they are not as
expensive and work with Alexa and Google Assistant, also very good are the ones
from TP Linka nd Lutron. I just did a huge renovation on a new building I
bought for my retail business and I chose to spend $1,000 on Leviton smart
switches. I bought the main switches for $54.99 Canadian from a company called
Aartech Canada, the nice thing is that for $29.99 you can buy what basically is
a remote control switch for 3-way or 4-way installations. These are switches
which communicate via Z-Wave so they are not Wi-Fi, but Leviton also makes a
Wi-Fi version of the switch. I bought these because I have an alarm system from
Alarm.com and these switches communicate via Z-Wave with the alarm panel and I
can use the Alarm.com app to control the lights, I think you can also set up
SIRI shortcuts and possibly Alexa and google Assistant integration, havent
Really explored this yet. I am pretty sure the Wi-Fi version of the switch is
compatible with SIRI, Alexa and google Assistant. These are basicallyu
decora-type in-wall switches and they are of very good quality and look nice. A
Smart bulb is cheaper especially if you don't get the ones which support
colours and for Fasil if he just wants 2 or 3 bulbs this may still be the
better way to go, but in any larger application or a new house I'd never put
anything but actual smart switches.

Best regards,
Sieghard

if "what" ya say IS True, then "why" Did Apple
PushOut iOS SecurityUpdates to Older iOSVersions
Like iOS9 & iOS10 as well as iOS12, When their
(current) iteration of iOS IS iOS13?

Because of the PR i.e., SecurityBreaches to those Versions of iOS
Don'tKnow
"why" You AppleFanBoyz Push Others to Update
Their iOSDevices, & Hate on Them when Doing so,
Breaks "accessibility" For Them & They Criticize Apple for its "Bugs" & Flaws"
i.e., the "Bugs" & "Flaws" of iOS8 &
MoreRecently iOS13, as Apple quickly Relased &
PushedOut iOSUpdates within 72Hours of the Relase of a NEW iPhone

Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with
you staying on IOS 12.4.1 as long as you want.
My only reason for posting is to let others know
that there's no obligation or guarantee from
Apple to support 12.4.1 forever. Plus, anyone
who stays on IOS 12.4.1 will be missing out on
security patches and may not get support from

with people having the right to choose, as long
as they're given accurate information to make that choice.

But if you ask for assistance and the version of the OS is not currently the
most up to date version available,
They will ask you to update before completing the help you need.

It would be part of the checking of the issues.

Hi List,

I'm preparing a presentation for late September where I'll discuss electronic
password managers. While I intend to focus on KeePass, I also want to mention
any others that folks are successfully using. The only criteria is that they be
accessible and work both with a computer and a portable device. Another person
will be presenting on 1Password so if anyone can offer other recommendations
meeting my criteria, I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have.

Reading a Bible I purchased in iTunes Bookstore

2020-08-30 Thread Duane Steele
Hello iPhone Listers,

I suddenly seem to have a dilemma. When I first got an iPhone back in 2012, I
bought the NRSV Bible from iBooks and had no trouble reading it. However,
recently, I opened that same Bible in the Books APP and tried to read some
passages using my BRAILLEEdge 40, and I'm having lots of problems finding
specific text. I've tried just about everything to remedy the situation,
especially because, in the denomination from which I retired as a parish pastor
prefers that weekly texts come from the NRSV Bible. If anyone on this list can
help me figure out how to read this book with a Braille device, I'll be
grateful. I haven't head issues with other books I've purchased through iTunes.
Naturally, Bibles present different challenges.

Peace & Blessings,
Pastor Duane L. Steele

Oh, but "They" Because I have AppleCare+ on it,
& it would be a Bad PR Move not
to Support it. Pressuring a Consumer to Update
a SoftwareVersion, which "They" (Apple) deemed
ReadyFor PublicRelease . It's MyRight, as
a Consumer Not to Update MyDevice'sSoftware &
there isn't AnyWhere in AppleCare+ that Sayz
that I must, & I Called & CheckedWith Apple's
AppleAccessibility TelephoneSupport, & "They"
indicated that I wouldn't Be Denied & that's that.

Do you own all of your songs? If you use iTunes to create a music library,
then you can download songs to all of your Apple devices to play off line. I
have an older iPhone SE that works just like an iPod Touch without it’s sem

I am currently using apple music on my iphone SE old. I would like to put
songs from my active phone on to a iphone that is not connected. I would like
to put them on the inactive iphone so I could just listen to them off line.
Can this be done? If so, how? I did call apple accessibility and got no help.

Re: apple music

2020-08-30 Thread Matthew Bullis
You should be able to download the songs you want if you log into the same
Apple ID. Without logging in, you wouldn't have access to the library you've
built up or the subscription you've been paying for.

The only reason I can think of why they may have said this, maybe what I was
needing to be done at the time required an update but whatever the reason, it
doesn't matter for me anymore, as I will always keep my phone updated.

RE: Smart Bulbs With Alexa?

2020-08-30 Thread Fazil

Sieghard

Yes too all three of your questions.

A smart light-bulb can only work with a mechanical On/Off switch. You obviously
need to leave the switch on after setting one up for it to work with Lady A.

I got Echo Dot and installed Alexa from the App-Store.

I have three questions,

1.

Can I use smart light-bulbs in old buildings?

2.

Can I use smart bulbs along with traditional bulbs?

I mean I want smart bulbs at a couple of places only.

3.

Does smart bulb work with mechanical switch too?

Thanks!

I agree, Shirley I'm sorry you had that experience too. I'm just saying I'm
not surprised because the tech support folks would tend to think your problem
was due to having an old version of the software. I would think most problems
could be resolved no matter the version but I'm sure there are some things that
are harder to troubleshoot if one is not current.

When my wife was in the hospital the last time for epilepsy monitoring we
watched 2 movies on netflix via cellular data because the hospital Wi-Fi was so

Hi there, it's better to have the title you wish to watch downloaded so that
you can watch the particular movie when wi-fi isn't available as surely you
know, watching video feeds cost loads of data.

I hope this helps.

Hi to all. The subject says it all. If I'm out and about and I want to watch
a movie on Disney Plus, can I do so, and use data if not connected to a wifi
network? I tried this morning for a second while I was waiting for food at
McDonalds and I kept getting the message not connected to the internet when I
tried to access my watch list of movies. Thanks for any help.

Yes, downloading it on Wi-Fi would be the better method, but you can probably
allow streaming via cellular data in Settings either Settings > Disney or
Settings > Cellular, then find the Disney app in the list of apps.

RE: Smart Bulbs With Alexa?

2020-08-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Best regards,
Sieghard

Yes too all three of your questions.

A smart light-bulb can only work with a mechanical On/Off switch. You obviously
need to leave the switch on after setting one up for it to work with Lady A.

Can I use smart light-bulbs in old buildings?

I mean I want smart bulbs at a couple of places only.

Does smart bulb work with mechanical switch too?

I'm not sure why you think Apple can't deny you telephone support for an older
unsupported version of IOS. You may be getting telephone support for now, but I
doubt it'll last forever. I'm pretty sure Apple isn't releasing security
updates for 12.4.1 any more either. Plus there's nothing that says app
developers have to continue to support 12.4.1.
