I was under the impression that this was the intention for the next years

This is what Samsung did with their higher end phones.

I think where eventually this seems to be going is that you can put your finger
anywhere on the screen and it will recognize your finger print. If that becomes
a reality and it would be combined with Face Id and you could use either or
then that would be the perfect 10 out of 10, I could use Touch Id if the phone
was in my pocket or at night if I'm just reaching over to my phone on the side
table and I could use Face Id in the winter when I'm wearing gloves or if my
hands are scratched up from working in my woodworking shop.

For myself, I would rather have face ID then have touch ID on the back of the
phone, which I think is stupid, or under the screen, where I have to guess at
where the sensor might be. I thought Samsung had a good idea when they put it
on the side button with the galaxy, was it the nine or the 10 the cheap one I
think it was 10 year or something? That made some sense. Otherwise, I don’t see
the issue with Face ID. My 10 R works fine.

2020-10-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You can use Face Id exactly in the same way as Touch Id to unlock your phone,
open apps which have their own security or approve sign-ins or Apple Pay
transactions.
Both have their advantages and I agree that ultimately if they come out with
phones where you can use either it would be the best of both worlds.

I like touch because it's very easy. I've never had face ID so I can only take
other people's wordAnother reason I like touch is that instead of entering your
password on websites, you can just use touch ID. How easy is that..

There are just those times when I don't need to hold the phone up to my face,
like when I'm lying down or sitting at a table. My hand is already on the
phone, since I have to touch the screen to interact with it, so it would be no

I don't understand that why apple is not providing charger adopter and
earphones/headphones? They claim that they didn't include these to reduce
carbon emission. Are they kidding man or am I missing something else? If so
one can imagine that in 2030 there release an iPhone 20, and will state
that we didn't include headset/phone because we care about the environment
and assume that buyer already have phone. ☺️ ☺️

Re: But All I Wanted was Touch ID

2020-10-15 Thread Mary Otten
For myself, I would rather have face ID then have touch ID on the back of the
phone, which I think is stupid, or under the screen, where I have to guess at
where the sensor might be. I thought Samsung had a good idea when they put it
on the side button with the galaxy, was it the nine or the 10 the cheap one I
think it was 10 year or something? That made some sense. Otherwise, I don’t see
the issue with Face ID. My 10 R works fine.

RE: But All I Wanted was Touch ID

2020-10-15 Thread chaltain
Touch ID doesn't need to be associated with a home button. Android phones have
touch ID sensors on the back of the phone or built into the power button. They
also have finger print sensors under the screen.

Apple Accessibility have just emailed me to sat Apple are aware of the problem
and are investigating. If you have no passcode, it is not a problem - if you
have a passcode, it is a pain!

On my iPhone SE 2020 running iOS 14.0.1, even though I have autolock set
to never when I am on a phone call the screen locks and therefore thes two
finger magic tap does not work to end tge call. I have to first of all
wake the phone with my finger ID before the magic tap will work. Is this a
 bug or not?
 Thanks

Hi Cher,

The phone will be on when you update your iOS using Wifi, it just might be a
little slower doing with Wifi verses iTunes. I forget all what you will

Interestingly enough, apple announced a new iPad Air last month that will have
touch ID built into the power button. I was really hoping they were going to do
the same with at least one of the new iPhone 12 models.

For my part, I just find touch ID to be a bit more convenient then face ID.
There are just those times when I don't need to hold the phone up to my face,
like when I'm lying down or sitting at a table. My hand is already on the
phone, since I have to touch the screen to interact with it, so it would be no
big deal to use touch ID. With face ID though, I have to remember to then hold
it up to my face, and since I didn't do it immediately, I may have to do it

wouldn't avoid buying a phone just because it didn't have touch ID, but with

But how is it that you know verizons 5g mm band is difficult to connect to when
as yet it hasn't been released
And the iPhone 12 range hasn't even been pre ordered yet!

I do so love how people know how well these things work when they either
haven’t tried them or the products are not even available.

Why don't people just wait for the devices and networks to be rolled out to the
world and give it a go before you start bad mouthing things

I am with you on 5G, Les and Alan. I think it’s a bunch of height, especially
Verizon and their MM wave which is vanishingly difficult to actually connect
to. So they’re ripping you off yet again. It’s interesting that both they and
AT are giving a little subsidy on the iPhone. They must be desperate. I think
the SE2 could be very compelling. That’s especially if you like a home button.

Re: But All I Wanted was Touch ID

2020-10-15 Thread Julian
Interestingly enough, apple announced a new iPad Air last month that will have
touch ID built into the power button. I was really hoping they were going to do
the same with at least one of the new iPhone 12 models.

RE: Review iPhone 12 series??

2020-10-15 Thread Carolyn
Oh yes, you will learn face ID. I went out in the sunshine to set mine up,
since, for some reason, the guy at Wal-Mart could not. I like touch better, but
can live with face.

Hi Mary, Alan and Interested Others,
Well, Verizon will not take advantage of us. My wife and I will be getting
iPhone 10R models. I know I can learn to use Face ID, and now is a good time to
learn. I figure it will be a long time before we see 5G in our area. If I am
mistaken and it happens within two years or so, we can upgrade if we wish. In
the meantime, with the money we will save, my wife can upgrade her iPad if she
wishes to do so. I appreciate all of the discussion on various iPhome models.
It really helped me make a decision for myself and the recommendation I offered
my wife.
Best Regards,

Les

I am with you on 5G, Les and Alan. I think it’s a bunch of height, especially
Verizon and their MM wave which is vanishingly difficult to actually connect
to. So they’re ripping you off yet again. It’s interesting that both they and
AT are giving a little subsidy on the iPhone. They must be desperate. I think
the SE2 could be very compelling. That’s especially if you like a home button.
I’m sticking with my 10 R.

Apple Accessibility have just emailed me to sat Apple are aware of the problem

finger magic tap does not work to end tge call. I have to first of all
wake the phone with my finger ID before the magic tap will work. Is this a
 bug or not?

They removed Touch ID, because there is no Home Button on the newer model

Why have they removed touch ID from the newer phones?

For my part, I just find touch ID to be a bit more convenient
then face ID. There are just those times when I don't need to hold the phone up
to my face, like when I'm lying down or sitting at a table. My hand is already
on the phone, since I have to touch the screen to interact with it, so it would
be no big deal to use touch ID. With face ID though, I have to remember to
then hold it up to my face, and since I didn't do it immediately, I may have to
do it more then once or just resort to entering my PIN. I don't hate face ID,
and I wouldn't avoid buying a phone just because it didn't have touch ID, but
with all things being equal, I'd go with a phone that supported touch ID.

Re: Updating IOS on WIFI instead of iTunes

2020-10-15 Thread Mike B
Hi Cher,

The phone will be on when you update your iOS using Wifi, it just might be a
little slower doing with Wifi verses iTunes. I forget all what you will
read or hear , but if you do use Wifi you'll be able to keep track of what's
happening. I'm sure you'll do this anyways, but I would plug your into the
charging cable for the updating process.

Take care and stay safe. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool. Go dodgers & Rams!

Re: Review iPhone 12 series??

2020-10-15 Thread Wayne Merritt
To update some thoughts I had put out a few days ago, I will wait on
the 5G second generation before making that jump too. If I upgrade my
phone, it will be to an iPhone 11. I like the idea of night mode for
using Aira. Also, to those getting the 10R or 11, remember you may be
able to trade-in your current phone for credit on your account, or
even better to take off a little of the purchase price or monthly
payments for the next phone. $600 is pretty reasonable for the 11, but
what if it could be $100 cheaper or more.

Be well,
Wayne Merritt

RE: Review iPhone 12 series??

2020-10-15 Thread Les Kriegler

Re: But All I Wanted was Touch ID

2020-10-15 Thread Michael Irons
I believe that people would like to have touch ID so that they can open their
phone easier when they have to wear a mask. We all need to remember COVID-19 is
still out there in all of us probably have to wear masks when we’re out and
about. Face ID will not work very well when you have to wear a mask.

Re: But All I Wanted was Touch ID

2020-10-15 Thread Shirley Baker
I like touch because it's very easy. I've never had face ID so I can only take
other people's wordAnother reason I like touch is that instead of entering your
password on websites, you can just use touch ID. How easy is that..

A Comcast repair person was at my house back in the summer and we talked about
5G and he said we didn't need it. He said businesses use it mostly.

I am on AT I’m pretty sure that 5g is not in my town yet. Anyway, the cell
connection is poor in this area. So I will wait until the 5G Service is
available everywhere before I get a 5G compatible phone. I was looking for the
12 to have an in screen fingerprint sensor. But being that the face ID on my

I guess they'd know if they'd seen me with my phone. Anyway, it does seem maybe

With face ID though, I have to remember to then hold
it up to my face, and since I didn't do it immediately, I may have to do it
more then once or just resort to entering my PIN. I don't hate face ID, and I
wouldn't avoid buying a phone just because it didn't have touch ID, but with
all things being equal, I'd go with a phone that supported touch ID.

Re: Review iPhone 12 series??

2020-10-15 Thread Mary Otten
I am with you on 5G, Les and Alan. I think it’s a bunch of height, especially
Verizon and their MM wave which is vanishingly difficult to actually connect
to. So they’re ripping you off yet again. It’s interesting that both they and
AT are giving a little subsidy on the iPhone. They must be desperate. I think
the SE2 could be very compelling. That’s especially if you like a home button.
I’m sticking with my 10 R.

Mine does that, but I have it set on two minutes. I just press the button on
the right side, and it opens.

RE: But All I Wanted was Touch ID

2020-10-15 Thread Carolyn
If I could have touch or facial ID, I'd take touch; I think it is more secure.
Actually, I think it extremely unlikely that someone would hold up my phone and
snatch it, once it was on, but there is that likelihood with facial, where with
touch, I'd really be in trouble if someone force my finger, and they wouldn't
know which to use, because I did not use my forefinger, when I had fingerprint.
I guess they'd know if they'd seen me with my phone. Anyway, it does seem maybe
a smidgen more secure to have touch rather than facial ID.

With face ID though, I have to remember to then hold
it up to my face, and since I didn't do it immediately, I may have to do it
more then once or just resort to entering my PIN. I don't hate face ID, and I
wouldn't avoid buying a phone just because it didn't have touch ID, but with
all things being equal, I'd go with a phone that supported touch ID.

In a word, masks. That thing we all have to wear now when we go places or want
to board airplanes and such. For the record, I would love to have both face ID
and touch ID and a device, that way we have the ultimate choice.

I don't remember fingerprint ID ever not working, where, every now and then,
I'm probably a little off or something, but facial won't, and I use passcode -
have gotten fast at that too.

RE: What Apple didn't tell us: Spotty 5G, Mini larger than SE, pricey Max, USA Today

2020-10-15 Thread Carolyn
And apple Care is optional. Back when I got my 4S, my daughter-in-love
convinced me I needed it, but two months of paying extra for it convinced me
that I did not. Now, on my thire iPhone, Settings reminds me that I have only
three days left (to get Apple Care). I do have a good screen saver and a nice
case for it though.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for posting this but Jefferson Graham got at least one of his facts
incorrect. About pricing, he says "The iPhone 12 doesn't sound that steep at
$799. But if you decide to spring for extra storage and Apple Care, as many do,
that will bring it to $1,298." The cost of an iPhone 12 with 256GB maximum
memory is $949 with an additional $149 for AppleCare which is a total of $1098,
still quite a bit of money but $200 less than what he stated.

USA Today

What Apple didn't tell you about the new iPhones By Jefferson Graham, USA TODAY

The late Steve Jobs was known for engaging in a "reality distortion field"
when launching new projects that perhaps didn't tell the whole story.

On Tuesday, Apple did a masterful job at its big reveal event of hyping its
lineup of four new iPhones that, on the face of it, will have faster
processors, improved camera features and connect to the new 5G wireless
standard. In addition to starting out with a new HomePod mini, Apple unveiled
an iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone Pro Max, ranging in
price from starting at $699 on up to starting at $1,099. We got the super
detailed information on the processors, lenses and intuitive technology that
makes it all work.
But what didn't Apple tell us? Well, a lot.

5G is here, but only sort of.
Apple touted 5G on iPhone as enabling faster game play, movies that would load
faster and apps that would zip along. And it brought the CEO of Verizon onto
the stage to hype 5G as well.

But good luck finding the 5G Apple and Verizon sold. ("We believe it will take
carriers years to build a compelling 5G infrastructure," noted analyst and
investor Gene Munster of Loup Ventures.) What Verizon calls its 5G Ultra
Wideband is in just 50 cities now and will increase to 60 by the end of the
year. But the coverage is spotty, it works in certain areas of the city only
and is unavailable in some major places, like Maine, Vermont, Louisiana,
Alabama and North Dakota.

The 5G offered by T-Mobile and AT is more widespread but not currently much
faster than 4G. Verizon on Tuesday unveiled a new, slower 5G, similar to what
AT and T-Mobile have that it says is available to 200 million customers.
Munster added that Verizon's touted speeds on the Apple presentation "are only
available to about 1% of the U.S. population today."

The latest:Apple unveils iPhone 12 models starting at $699, and HomePod Mini
speaker

No jacks: Apple's new iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro models will come without
charger and headphones

That new iPhone could cost you at check out.
The iPhone 12 doesn't sound that steep at $799. But if you decide to spring for
extra storage and Apple Care, as many do, that will bring it to $1,298, before
tax. Then add the new MagSafe wireless charger and new case, and you're looking
at $1,398. Which could be a bargain compared to the $1,768 for the
top-of-the-line maxed out iPhone 12 Pro Max, which starts at $1,099, before the
extra storage, warranty and accessories.

The Mini is the smallest iPhone. Again sort of.
Of the new iPhones, the Mini clocks in with a 5.4-inch screen, smaller than the
6.1-inch screen of the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro, or 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max. The
SE, which happens to be the lowest-priced iPhone, at $399, has a 4.7-inch
screen. Now that's a mini, compared to the others. What the SE doesn't have is
an edge to edge screen, like the Mini. he Mini is physically smaller in body
size. Mini: Height (5.18 inches) Width (2.53) and Depth:
(0.29) SE: Height (5.45) Width (2.65) and Depth (0.29)

The iPhone 12 doesn't have the highest resolution screen The Samsung Galaxy S20
Ultra touts 3200x1440 resolution, versus 2778x1284 for the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

What is that 'ceramic shield'?
Apple says the new glass from Corning, the same company that has been providing
the Gorilla Glass screens that so many people have cracked over the years, is
"tougher" than any smartphone glass. Corning also makes the screens for Galaxy
phones and other smartphone makers, which Apple didn't mention. And how is this

RE: Review iPhone 12 series??

2020-10-15 Thread Carolyn
I have an 11, not a Pro, but if the SE had been out, when I needed to replace
my phone, I'd have bought it. For one reason, it still has a Home Button. I
have had no problem not having one, but I find fingerprint ID never to fail,
where facial ID sometimes can, and I use my passcode to open. The other reason
would be that the SE is a little smaller, more convenient to carry or store in
pocket or purse.

Hi Alan,
I am also with you and Richard. I will share my experience in the hopes it will
help others. I have been a Verizon customer for many years. As a result, I am
on a Loyalty Plan for individuals 55 and older. I was seriously considering the
iPhone 12 Mini and had a lengthy conversation with a Verizon rep. Then I asked
about how this would affect our plan. I learned that if I purchased a 5G
capable phone, I would have to switch to a 5g plan. Our bill would go up by $54
per month. It gets worse. I live in a town which does not have 5G yet. No way
to tell when that might come here. So I would be paying an extra $54 per month
for a service I cannot use. Guess what I'm doing? I'm now looking at either the
SEor the iPhone 11 pro. I would welcome any comments pro or con about either
phone. For me, 5G is out. Even if it were available, I don't think it's worth
an extra $54 per month. Now, this could change, but it does not matter to me at
this point.
Best Regards,

Les

I'm with Richard here. Be aware that all the hoopla about 5G will require use
of cellular data and I suspect that at some point, carriers will be charging
accordingly to recover whatever hardware they've priced low to get you into
their fold. I still intend to primarily use wifi since I'm using my iPhone at
home most of the time and don't intend to increase the capacity of my cellular
plan whether using 4G or 5G.

I usually follow the motto that if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
What kind of contract commitments do they want with these amazing pricings?

If it locks you into a 2 year contract at a given level, I'd make sure I
understand the possible down sides.
If it is right for a person, then that's great!

For those looking to upgrade to the new phones, I found some aggressive pricing
from AT and Verizon mentioned in the Apple Store app, like an $800 credit
from AT They really want to get everyone on 5G, and same from Verizon it
looks like. I wasn't planning on getting one, but this may change my mind. I've
never heard of major carriers practically giving away the new iPhone before.

RE: But All I Wanted was Touch ID

2020-10-15 Thread chaltain
For my part, I just find touch ID to be a bit more convenient then face ID.
There are just those times when I don't need to hold the phone up to my face,
like when I'm lying down or sitting at a table. My hand is already on the
phone, since I have to touch the screen to interact with it, so it would be no
big deal to use touch ID. With face ID though, I have to remember to then hold
it up to my face, and since I didn't do it immediately, I may have to do it
more then once or just resort to entering my PIN. I don't hate face ID, and I
wouldn't avoid buying a phone just because it didn't have touch ID, but with
all things being equal, I'd go with a phone that supported touch ID.

Re: Does Apple Watch use Screen Curtain?

2020-10-15 Thread Michael Hunter
Hello Richard
I live in Ashford Kent UK. You may find the following Apple Support page of
interest re Screen Curtain with VoiceOver for your Mac etc
.
I went to the Apple store at Bluewater and tried an Apple Watch Series 6.
1st Apple Watch that I have tried. Very impressed with it and hope to get
one very soon. I am also interested in the NaviLens technology.
