RE: iPad Mini 5 Orientation?

2021-01-24 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Sorry I’m not sure I understand,

If you have voiceover on,
Then when you tip the iPad on to it’s side the ipad will tell you its in
landscape with home button to side which ever.

The home button is at the bottom of the tablet,
The camera is at the top and in the centre if I remember correctly,
Power button is on the top edge, at the right hand end back slightly from the
corner

Volume buttons are on the right hand edge, just below the top right corner of
the tablet,
I’m sure you can feel both power on top and volume on the side,

Headphone jack is on the top edge, at left hand end of surface,
Left hand side of the tablet is the surface which smart covers manetically
connect to
The bottom of the tablet
This bottom edge has the speakers
Lightening connecter port located.
Then you have the bck and the front.

Re: Use iMessage On Android And Windows Thanks To Chat App 'Beeper'

2021-01-24 Thread Mary Otten
Nice, but is it ethical or legal? I agree that Apple should make iMessage
available as a universal deal on multi platforms. But I don’t think this is the
right approach. Unethical is unethical.

Recently released instant messaging and chat app “Beeper” gives access to
more than a dozen different chat platforms.

Perhaps more importantly, it also lets you interact with iMessage on
Android and Windows devices, getting around Apple’s platform restrictions.

The team behind the Beeper app and platform includes some well-known
individuals in the tech-scene, including former Pebble CEO, Eric
Migicovsky, who took to Twitter to announce that he has been dogfooding
his own product for the last two years.

He also confirmed that Beeper supports iMessage on Android, Linux, and
Windows using what he calls “some trickery.”

So, what exactly is that “trickery”?

Well, like other services that have attempted to bring iMessage to other
platforms in the past, Beeper will require the subscriber to have an
“always-on” Mac running the Beeper app that will act as an intermediary
bridge to pass incoming iMessages over to unofficially supported platforms
 running the Beeper app.

However, if you don’t have a Mac, then Beeper has a solution – albeit an
insane one – for that: providing a jailbroken iPhone 4s running the Beeper
 app.

Once officially launched, the Beeper app will have a monthly subscription
price of $10.00. Presumably, the company will charge a little more or
include a one-off fee, if it needs to ship a jailbroken iPhone 4s to its
customers to use iMessage on Android and Windows. If everything works as
advertised, then subscribers should be left with a universal,
multi-platform chat app that supports iMessage, WhatsApp, Facebook
Messenger, Slack, and many more chat services.

The whole platform is built on the open-source Matrix messaging protocol,
which means that tech-minded individuals can actually view the source code
of the underlying engine but not the user-facing apps. Those who are
interested in learning more about the Beeper platform or signing up to try
it out are asked to fill in a form on the Beeper website in order to
 register their interest.

Well, if you think of an iPhone, with the home button at the bottom, on the
right side are the volume buttons, and on the top side, kind of on the back
edge near the right side is the power, lock button.

The earphone jack is on the top side near the left edge.

The charging port is on the bottom edge below the home button.

Another advantage is that you don't necessarily have to live within walking

you pay for convenience. For me it’s worth it because I can’t walk to a
grocery store: it would cost me roughly 8 dollars each way with Uber or lyft
to make the round-trip, more coming back with tipping the driver to help get
a substantial amount of groceries up my front stairs, Plus this way I can
take as long as I want independently checking out the different options, and
being sure that I will get what I want versus holding my breath fearing at
any given time hat the store people will say, oh, we’re busy right now, you
have to make an appointment before you come, making me feel like a
second-class citizen, and, maybe getting home and discovering that I got hot
chocolate mix instead of baking cocoa because the young person doesn’t know
the difference, or experiences with people who can’t read for whatever
reason when I bring in a list. I’m glad I don’t have to deal with these
things anymore, compounded with these days having to be worried about social
distancing as a totally blind person, and people acting weird if you touch
them.

Hello Andy,

I am so sorry you experienced such a horrible thing. However, identity
theft can happen, remotely, as well as in person.

Also, I want to be clear that you are not saying that the person you hired
to assist you came from Care.com, right?

Anytime anyone uses Be My Eyes, etc, to read personal info, identity theft
is possible.

I know of two people whose very own family members stole their identities;
just terrible. Be that as it may, we cannot allow the unknown to prevent us
from taking part in life.

As for me, I am fortunate enough to have two long-time friends to assist me
with documents that may have to require my social security number, etc.
Other than that? I simply use my screen reader technology to review my mail.

Again, I am so sorry for your horrific experience.

Hello Everyone,

Has anyone ever used the care.com app for either iOS or iPad OS?

The reason I ask is because, there are in-app purchases, quite
reasonable ones, actually, but before I spend the money, I would
like to make certain that the app is VoiceOver accessible.

Now in the App Store, there are two listings for the app but I
believe the resulting download is the same. One app lists itself as
being for those seeking baby-sitters; this is misleading because one
can search for people who provide care for anything; for example to
those who are blind or low vision, seniors, etc. the other is
listed as being for those who wish to register to the service as
being a care giver. Again, the same options appear in either of the
downloads which is why I am almost positive that the two app listings
are one-in-the-same.

While the service can be accessed from www.care.com, I would prefer
to register and purchase a subscription through the Apple App Store
so as to be certain that I can easily terminate any subscription without
any hassle.
Also, I don't relish the idea of providing my billing info to yet
another service unless it is absolutely necessary.

As always, all replies greatly appreciated.

It will still say, Direct Touch Area, but you can just go on and do whatever

RE: Android And iPhone For Sale

2021-01-24 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Marco,

As you did not first acquire permission to sell items on this list, I have
suspended your posting privileges for no less than 1 week and until after such
time as you contact me, confirming that you will no longer post any sale items
without first having received permission from either Cara or me, to do so.

Subject: RE: Android And iPhone For Sale

Hello everyone,

I have a couple of items that I am looking to sell, as I have recently updated
to more current devices.

The first item is a 128GB Samsung S10 Plus phone. In perfect condition with no
marks or scratches and no sign of wear or tear. Includes box with all
accessories, as well as a brand-new rubber protective case and a brand-new
screen protector. Asking price is $600 AUD.

The second item is a 256GB Apple iPhone XS Max. Again, in perfect condition,
with a tiny mark from wear and tear on the bottom left-hand corner which is
barely noticeable. Once again, you get the box with all accessories, a
brand-new rubber protective case and a brand-new screen protector. Asking price
for this item is also $600 AUD.

If you are located in Melbourne, I am happy to deliver or you can pick up for
free. Postage costs will need to be applied if you would like the item posted
to you.

Here are some links if you would like further specs and details on either
device.
https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s10+-9535.php
https://www.gsmarena.com/apple_iphone_xs_max-9319.php

Please note: Both devices are working perfectly and both batteries are also
working perfectly, as I always take very good care with my devices.

Please PM me or WhatsApp/Telegram/Signal/call/SMS me on +61 412 128 429 if you
would like to discuss or find out any further information.

Finally, photos can be provided of either item upon request.

Warm regards,

Marco Curralejo

Re: Adding others to FaceTime call?

2021-01-24 Thread 'Harry Bell' via VIPhone
Thanks, Richard. Though a group call is possible, I want to call my brother
first and, once we are both ready, then add dad in. He is in a care home and is
helped there with his iPad, so no time to lose. Once on with my brother, how do
I add dad in?

Re: direct touch area.

2021-01-24 Thread Sherrie Gosling
I have only had experience with the direct touch area on my blindfold games
solitaire. I could start the game but if I was interrupted by a phone call or
notification or anything the game would stop working. Closing the game and the
app switcher and restarting did no good. Only restarting the whole phone. Then
I realized the game is self voicing so I could turn off voiceover when it was
having a direct touch problem and it worked. Just a workaround for the games
until the direct touch is gone!

RE: contacts in outlook for Ios

2021-01-24 Thread Richard Turner
Well, since you use a Gmail address, I'm not sure if things will be the same.
I go to settings, mail, and set the default mail account.
Then, in Settings, contacts, I double tap on default account and select
outlook, but that is because I have an outlook mail account.
Under calendar, I make sure that "Calendar" is selected under the Outlook
section and is the default.
It gets tricky because if you have appointments on the iPHone calendar, that
you entered before highlighting the outlook calendar, they won't show up on
your computers outlook calendar.
You may want to walk through this with either Apple Accessibility or Microsoft
Accessibility.

Just start flicking right with one finger and you should have the list.
I just tried it by putting the letter d in the to field, heard the announcement
and flicked right and got the first suggestion and by continuing to flick right
it jumped from one to the next with no issues.

Hi,
My company has just migrated to outlook exchange for our email so I installed
outlook on my iPhone se and it is connected to the exchange server just fine.

When I try to compose an email, and start inputting the to field, outlook says
there are x matches from my contacts. My question is where do I find the list
of suggested contacts so I can simply pick the one I want?

I have used explore-by-touch to look everywhere on the screen but don't see the
suggestions.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

>From the Apple support page on group facetime calls:
Start a Group FaceTime call from the FaceTime app
Go to Settings > FaceTime, and make sure that FaceTime is on.
Open FaceTime and tap the Add button in the top-right corner.
Enter the name of your contacts, phone numbers, or emails.
To start your FaceTime call, tap Audio or Video.

So, just keep adding everyone you want in the call up to 32 people and make the
call.

How do you get outlook to use your contacts you have on the phone to look for

Just start flicking right with one finger and you should have the list.
I just tried it by putting the letter d in the to field, heard the announcement
and flicked right and got the first suggestion and by continuing to flick right
it jumped from one to the next with no issues.

Subject: contacts in outlook for Ios

Hi,
My company has just migrated to outlook exchange for our email so I installed
outlook on my iPhone se and it is connected to the exchange server just fine.

Sincerely,

Donald Raikes, CPACC

I think Apple thinks they are making things better, but I am finding it more of

Re: Has Anyone Ever Used the Care.com App for iOS / iPad OS?

2021-01-24 Thread Richard Turner
If any person hires a stranger to handle confidential information without
confirming that they are license and bonded, is simply asking for trouble.
I have some concern about care.com based on the statement at the bottom of
their web site which I pasted below.
Care.com does not employ any care provider or care seeker nor is it responsible
for the conduct of any care provider or care seeker. Care.com provides
information and tools to help care seekers and care providers connect and make
informed decisions. However, each individual is solely responsible for
selecting an appropriate care provider or care seeker for themselves or their
families and for complying with all applicable laws in connection with any
employment relationship they establish. The information contained in member
profiles, job posts and applications are supplied by care providers and care
seekers themselves and is not information generated or verified by Care.com.
Care.com does not provide medical advice, diagnosis or treatment or engage in
any conduct that requires a professional license.

you pay for convenience. For me it’s worth it because I can’t walk to a grocery
store: it would cost me roughly 8 dollars each way with Uber or lyft to make
the round-trip, more coming back with tipping the driver to help get a
substantial amount of groceries up my front stairs, Plus this way I can take as
long as I want independently checking out the different options, and being sure
that I will get what I want versus holding my breath fearing at any given time
hat the store people will say, oh, we’re busy right now, you have to make an
appointment before you come, making me feel like a second-class citizen, and,
maybe getting home and discovering that I got hot chocolate mix instead of
baking cocoa because the young person doesn’t know the difference, or
experiences with people who can’t read for whatever reason when I bring in a
list. I’m glad I don’t have to deal with these things anymore, compounded with
these days having to be worried about social distancing as a totally blind
person, and people acting weird if you touch them.

RE: Has Anyone Ever Used the Care.com App for iOS / iPad OS?

2021-01-24 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Andy,

I am so sorry you experienced such a horrible thing. However, identity theft
can happen, remotely, as well as in person.

Also, I want to be clear that you are not saying that the person you hired to
assist you came from Care.com, right?

Anytime anyone uses Be My Eyes, etc, to read personal info, identity theft is
possible.

I know of two people whose very own family members stole their identities; just
terrible. Be that as it may, we cannot allow the unknown to prevent us from
taking part in life.

As for me, I am fortunate enough to have two long-time friends to assist me
with documents that may have to require my social security number, etc. Other
than that? I simply use my screen reader technology to review my mail.

Again, I am so sorry for your horrific experience.

Mark

RE: Has Anyone Ever Used the Care.com App for iOS / iPad OS?

2021-01-24 Thread M. Taylor
First, I am not going to attempt to change anyone's mind on anything.

All I can say is that Care.com has been around for over 12 years, that I know
of; they do extensive criminal background checks and provide references with
contact phone numbers.

I know of many people who have used them for finding baby-sitters, senior care,
etc.

As for letting people in one's home, I think many home owners do just that very
thing when hiring contractors and various vendors to make repairs, install new
systems, etc.

Fear of the unknown should never be a barrier to gaining independence and
exploring new options.

There are risks in virtually every decision; that's life. Bad things happen,
sometimes; all one can do is do the best one can to try and minimize the
chances of bad things happening by performing due diligence.

I know of some people, for example, who will not take a taxi or an Uber because
they read about bad things that can happen to one while in an Uber or a taxi.
As a result, they are shut-in and cut off from the outside world because they
are too afraid to take a chance.

So many of us who are visually impaired do not have family members or friends
who can assist us; so what are we to do? Just sit within four walls and wait
for life to find us?

While I love the fact that we have access to the internet, etc; I some times
wonder how much damage such access does to our mental health.

Mainstream news focuses on bad news. For every 1 bad thing that happens in an
Uber, there are countless times when nothing bad happens, but the news does not
report that fact. The same can be said of any encounter between people and
institutions.

I purchased a home earlier this year, in a town in which I had no previous
acquaintances. As a result, I have engaged the services of many people who I
have met through various references.

My experience has been absolutely incredible. Of course I have taken some
precautions, for example, I keep all of my personal documents in a locked file
cabinet, in a locked room. Other than that? Nothing. Now I can tell you that
not one of the people who have entered my home has even attempted to do
anything suspicious or untoward.

As a result, they have introduced me to people they trust and, slowly, very
slowly, I am building a network of support.

I apologize for the long rant but I don't want anyone to be afraid of taking a
chance on increasing their independence because of the negative comments of
some and /or fear of the unknown.

And how extensively are the people who can reply to your ad get checked out?
I'd be quite hesitant to let somebody into my house to clean whom I don't know
from a hole in the ground and who potentially has his or her own agenda with
respect to my property or personal well-being.

I found someone to clean via the care app. You just sign up... post an ad...
and you will get messages/applications.

Hi, Everyone,

I play RS Games a lot and I also am having difficulty with this Direct Touch
craziness. Eventually, I get the app to work, but it takes some effort to do
so. What does this do anyway? Pardon my ignorance! Haha!

Re: A Very Good Experience with Using InstaCart for iOS

2021-01-24 Thread Kathy Brandt
you pay for convenience.

Hello Jennifer,

This is great news. I was so busy with the InstaCart app, today, that I only
signed up for a Care.com account. I have yet to subscribe and post; but am
planning to do so soon.

So glad you found someone to assist; I hope I am as fortunate.

I am so relieved to discover that so many independence enabling apps are
finally starting to be consistently VoiceOver accessible. This is not to say
that we don't have far to go; but we have definitely come a long way, as the
proverbial saying goes.

I may contact you, off-list, regarding this service, in the coming days.

RE: A Very Good Experience with Using InstaCart for iOS

2021-01-24 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Chris,

I found that the prices for InstaCart were the same as what I would find on the
in-store experience. Now I purchased a 1 year membership with InstaCart. And,
as long as my order is over $30, which is what my in-store shopping would
usually be, anyway, there is no delivery charge.

Any difference in price is small and, to my mind, well worth the convenience.
Just my opinion.

I used instacarT few times in the last two years. As many people have noted,
the service is quick, the app is accessible, and the customers service is easy
to deal with. However, the prices are significantly higher than what you would
find on the store shelves. If you are on a limited budget you better be
careful. It could eat up into your budget quickly. I admit that I used the
instacart service more than I should have because of covid, but under normal
circumstances I would rarely use it.
